L ately, I've been reflecting a little bit on conflict – especially in the light of the Brexit negotiations which still divides almost every community and the nation

at large; complete with opposition to any and every argument for or against Hard Brexit, Soft Brexit, Second Referendum ... Elsewhere in the world, renewed terror attacks and anti-Christian sentiment abound.

There are many hymns in our hymnals that speak of conflict: Fight The Good Fight being just one of them alongside others such as Stand Up Stand Up For Jesus & Onward Christian Soldiers. But just who or what are we fighting; and why?

St Paul urges Timothy to “Fight the good fight of the faith”. (1 Timothy 6.12). To stand against false teaching, controversies and quarrels; and to pursue righteousness and Godliness. St Peter, writing to the Church tells us “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith”. (1 Peter 5.8-9) St Paul, again, tells us to put on the armour of God because “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world”. (Ephesians 6.12)

Our fight and our battle is against Satan and the forces of evil. It should certainly never be against one another. Instead Jesus told us to love one another. Indeed, he makes it a command: “A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13.34-35)

Let us learn to obey this command and live in love and peace with all. With every blessing,

Colin

Children’s Page

February 14th – Valentine’s Day February 22nd – Thinking Day

Fold two circles in half then slip one piece into the other and glue together. Write a message and put it in the heart with the name of the person you love on the side.

The Children and Families’ Workers are hoping to start a weekly toddler group. We are still in the very early planning stage, but we would like to ask you to think about what you might be able to offer this group. Help with the planning, help with setting up, help with running it, help with tea and coffee or maybe just another person to sit and talk with the mums, dads or carers. It doesn’t have to be a weekly commitment, the more people who offer their time, the less time they need to offer. What better way to introduce children and families to our own Church family than to be there and interact with them at this new group. For more information please talk to Alison or Linda and help get our first new Children and Family activity off the ground.

“We love because He first loved us”.

It is traditional to send a card to the one you love on Valentine’s Day but keeping secret who it is from. On Thinking Day Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows around the world wear their uniform and ‘think’ about what it means to be part of the two organisations and the opportunities it gives them. Why not, this month, put the two together. Make a paper heart and give it to someone you love. Only make sure you put your name on it too, so it isn’t a secret. Then have a good ‘think’ and write inside who you love and why. God loves each and every one of us, we shouldn’t keep that a secret either. Perhaps you could make a heart for God.

The last weeks of 2018 were a real roller coaster for all of us involved with the Youth Cafe, the building was up for sale, Jo who has successfully run the daytime Community Cafe for nearly four years decided that now was the right time for her to move on to pastures new and it was time to try and secure key funding for the next financial year. Well when Christmas actually arrived we had two and half out of three challenges sorted so we could all at least breath easily and enjoy the season.

Challenges into the coming spring still remain of course, we need to secure the full funding package and tackle our planning for the longer term options around delivery of appropriate youth services centred on the Cafe or elsewhere. On funding we are very cautiously optimistic, the Cafe has a good track record of delivery but we do recognise that every year is different and we need continuously to make the case for support but we are really buoyed up by the Parish Council’s decision to ring-fence £20,000 in the coming year’s precept to youth work delivered through the Cafe. That decision illustrates the Council’s confidence in us as a team but also recognises the on-going need within the village.

Future delivery is a bigger and more critical challenge. The Cafe was founded on the premise that we deliver a free to use drop in facility for young people and that remains our underpinning, but we have noticed over the last couple of years that the perceptions of young people in what they desire and how they want to spend their free time are changing and that a fixed location drop-in may no longer be the key to supporting them. These changes are not unique to the village, the same is being seen elsewhere across the country. Finding a solution to this conundrum within Mountsorrel is our challenge for the next 12 months and it is one that we cannot hope to solve alone, we will be engaging with our users, stakeholders (that is everyone who supports us in whatever way) and local public bodies, most importantly the Parish Council. Please note the 12 months time frame. as in March 2020 we will have completed our 10 year lease on the site and need to look at continuing by negotiating a further lease or not. As you will imagine the next few months will be “interesting”.

Those of you who were in the Cafe just before we closed for Christmas will have been able to say goodbye to Jo who, after nearly four years of setting up and

running the daytime community Cafe (MyCafe at SyCafe), had decided to move and

concentrate her efforts on foster work. She will of course be missed by many and she goes with our best wishes and respect for taking on the challenge that fostering represents. Jo’s departure left us with a serious problem, the community cafe has, since its founding, taken on a life of its own and has surfaced issues within our community that need tackling. These may not be totally youth focussed but they are certainly related and the community cafe provides a platform for solutions. With that being the case we could not consider simply closing and thankfully have found a lady who has the right skill sets and interest in taking up the challenge, so do call in and meet Nicci who is now running the community cafe for us all.

I spoke at the start of these notes about securing a funding package for the year. That is obviously critical but does only cover the essentials, site rental, staff pay, utilities etc, we have always been reliant upon the support of the local community to fill the financial void for the rest and in this the church communities of both Christ Church and St Peter’s have been stalwarts, providing us this last 12 months with £2264.89. This fantastic support is made up from two key events, the September Fair at St Peter’s (£832.55) and The Christmas Tree Festival at Christ Church (£706.04) and these are underpinned by the ongoing week in, week out support from the Christ Church Friday Coffee Mornings (£726.30). A heartfelt thank you from all of us for this support. As ever we still need volunteers to help with youth sessions and support Nicci with the community cafe so if you feel up for a challenge do please have a word with me or Nicci.
