To pull together the listings of America’s Largest and Fastest-Growing Churches, we turned once again to missiologist and Outreach con-tributing editor Ed Stetzer, who is also president of LifeWay Research. (You can read his impressions in the complete Outreach 100 report. Click here for more information.)

In preparation for this annual report, we ran ads soliciting participa-tion from more than 8,000 churches. They were invited by fax, e-mail, letter, phone and certified mail. The listings are based on February and March weekend attendance averages, not membership. The Largest list includes churches of more than 5,500. The Fastest-Growing list includes churches with attendance greater than 1,000, a numerical gain of 250 or more, and a percentage gain of at least 3 percent.

Some churches chose not to respond to multiple interview requests, for various reasons. A few did not want to reveal attendance data; others simply could not find the time to participate. A couple large churches

chose not to participate this year because these lists do not include online worship attendance—a tricky metric until a standard measure emerges. And there are those who were concerned that this sort of survey promotes a numbers-based mentality above mission.

With that in mind, note that The Outreach 100 is not a compre-hensive and exhaustive list. It is based on a self-reported survey, not an independent investigation. Although we went to great lengths to confirm data, the information is reported by pastors, staff or church officers, and as such, is a reflection of their perceptions—their churches as they see them.

Ultimately, though, The Outreach 100 is not so much about numbers as it is the individuals those numbers represent—people who have found hope in Christ, and the churches pointing them toward to Him. If we glean insight from those churches and catch something of their passion for outreach, this special issue will have fulfilled its purpose.
