WELCOME TO OUR PARISH

FESTIVAL!

Page 2: Churches of St. Mary & St. Henry

From the Pastor’s Desk

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I’d like to offer a special welcome to those who are visiting St. Mary’s for our parish festival this weekend! We’re glad you’re here, and I hope you will take advantage of all the festivities we’re offering—from food, games, entertainment, fellowship, and opportunities to win some great prizes. We have what is considered one of the best roast beef dinners served in Minnesota (maybe even in the United States!). There’s always a lot to take in when you come to St. Mary’s Festival – I hope you will spend some time experiencing it all, along with the great hospitality of our community.

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. It’s an interesting feast, being that in the course of the year, the we celebrate the birthdays of only two other individuals, the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8) and Jesus Christ (December 25). So John must be a pretty important figure in the Tradition of the Church, right? Absolutely! John the Baptist would become the herald of Jesus Christ. He was the one called from his mother’s womb to announce the coming of the Messiah, the “voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’”.

As we hear in the readings today, John was born under interesting circumstances. His mother, Elizabeth, was advanced in years and thought unable to conceive. But through a miracle of God, she conceived. John’s father, Zechariah, didn’t believe it, so because of his unbelief, the angel of God struck him mute until the day that John was born. When the time came to name the child, all his relatives wanted to give him the family name Zechariah, but Zechariah protested as he wrote on a tablet, “John is his name” (Luke 1:63). Immediately, Zechariah was able to speak, and all were amazed. They took it as a sign that God had chosen this child for something special. Zechariah’s response is a beautiful hymn known as the Canticle of Zechariah (Luke 1:68-80), part of which proclaims: “You, my child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins”. Somehow, Zechariah knew that John would announce the coming of Jesus. He would do so thirty years later, not just pointing to Jesus and announcing Him as the Lamb of God, but baptizing Him in the Jordan River.

The story of John’s birth and life teaches us something very important. Like John, each of us has been chosen by God for a specific purpose in this life. We are called to announce the coming of Christ into the world by using our gifts to the best of our ability to draw others to Jesus. It may not seem like much to us now, and they may not write about us in the annals of history, but nonetheless that call is worthy of God’s sons and daughters. When we recognize the fact that God thinks highly enough of us to entrust us with such a call, we are lifted up from our lowliness and brought into His Awesome Presence.

It’s easy to get discouraged and want to give up when we face disappointments or setbacks in life. It’s easy to think less of ourselves for not living up to our expectations or the expectations of others. But remember this important lesson: Like John, we are called not to the fulfillment of our own plans or those of others for our life, we are called to fulfill God’s plan. If we remain faithful to that call that God gave us from our mother’s womb, then He will grant us all we need to bear amazing fruit in the world.

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]
