2 CHURCHILL AVENUE SEMESTER NEWS

From thePrincipalIt has been another busy first semester. We’ve continued to make improvements to the physical look of the College, and at the start of Semester

One, our new multi-sports oval at 204 was opened and has been a welcomed feature – no more mud pits, dry patches and problematic grass. My thanks to the Health and Physical Education (HPE) staff for their assistance with the overall design.

We have a new external amphitheatre and stage for our music students that is also a great space for students during recess and lunchtime. Landscaping work continues on our Year 12 Garden area with a new undercover space being finished which will combine seating and table tennis for our senior students. This will open in Semester Two.

The St Madeleine Arts Centre is now complete and will open for classes in Semester Two. The new building will house visual and performing arts, and adds more learning spaces to Christ the King Campus. Whilst it was a challenging build, it was well worth the effort. We will announce an official opening date soon – I encourage everyone to come and tour this amazing new space.

The College is currently applying for funding to build a multi-purpose hall adjacent to the auditorium. Not only will it allow us to use the building for our HPE classes but also as a space to meet as a whole community. Currently we use off-site spaces, which come at a considerable cost. Work on the new hall is expected to commence by the end of the year.

Programme ImprovementsThe College continues to improve in its educational standing. Earlier this year we received recognition from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) “as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in reading achievement.” In fact, we doubled the average growth for a Victorian school. I am grateful to our English and library staff for their concerted effort to improve our reading results over the last three years. This is a great reflection of their hard work.

We continue to be a lead school for the Respectful Relationships program and this year introduced Wise Guys at St John’s Campus. Our Wellbeing Programs continue to be a feature of our College and we will ensure that we can offer the best we can to our students.

China PartnershipThe College recently signed an agreement with a secondary college in Hainan, China. We will partner with Hainan Middle School affiliated to Central China Normal University, Haikou to deliver VCE in China. This exciting initiative will see our College staff venture out to assist in the delivery. My thanks to Mr Paul Piperno for initiating and overseeing this project.

Community EngagementThis year we introduced the role of Community Engagement Coordinator. Ms Natalie Brown joined us to take up this position and we have seen growth in this important area over the last six months. We continue to find ways to engage our families who make us one of the most diverse schools in Melbourne, with over 83 cultures represented. Ms Brown has organised a number of family activities and I am grateful to the mums who attended our first Mother’s Day breakfast. Our Grade 6 Trivia Night was well attended with double the expected number.

As we head into a busy Semester Two, let us reflect on our true calling.

Yours sincerely,

Marco DiCesare

Prayer

Let us always remember that we are Church….A Church that: works with refugees every day; works with people with a disability; works with people on the poverty line; works with homeless; offer pastoral support for prisoners; works to protect our environment and our common home; educated millions of Australian children over generations; provides medical treatment in our hospital for generations; accompanies the dying; and the list goes on.

Starting my journey as a senior student was exciting, yet full of trepidation. The thought of being at a new campus, surrounded by new people was nerve-racking. One of the most difficult changes was leaving the Learner Mentor that had housed me for three years. However, the support that surrounded me was nothing less than great. The level of welcoming I received from the students and teachers was phenomenal. Being at Sacred Heart has opened up endless opportunities to embark on different learning adventures. The range of subjects offered has assisted me in getting a better idea of what I am interested in, and what I would like to study in the future. Thus far, Sacred Heart has been such an amazing place to learn and grow and I can’t wait to see what the coming semester has to bring.

Mikayla Singarella, Sacred Heart - Year 10, Lorenzo 4

“ Student Reflections

The year so far at the College has been enjoyable, but above all memorable. The school offers a range of events and groups you can join to make new friends or learn more about the topics or hobbies you are interested in, such as, Premier League. I competed for the school in basketball and was able to connect with people I wouldn’t have talked to if it weren’t for taking part in sport. As well as sport, I have been able to participate in leadership as a college ambassador, and regularly am able to represent the College and share my ideas about how we can make our school a better place. As someone that has come into high school knowing no one and stressing over the amount of work I would get within the Aspire class, I have found it easy to fit in and have a great group of friends. I have been able to master the art of opening and closing my locker. I have become comfortable with the people and the environment around me, and I have been able to get to know my teachers as great people who strive students to be the best we can be. I have been able to organise myself to keep my homework under control. One thing I have learnt is to enjoy it all and take the opportunities you get because before you know it the year will be over and then comes Year 8. I mean it’s crazy to think that already half the year has gone by, but I guess time flies by when you’re having fun!

Gabrielle Niemann, Christ the King - Year 7, Clare 3

Semester One at the College was very busy across all departments. We had many fun activities such as Athletics Day, swimming, self-defense, Reflection Day, Open Day and The Hurting Game performance. During Term One, some students from the Music Department were fortunate enough to go to Fitzroy Gardens and perform in front of hundreds of primary schools. Alongside us was Thomas Carr College who also performed. Later in the semester we had our annual Winter Concert where students and staff performed and showed there talent to the public. The overall highlight for me was Athletics Day because even though my house didn’t win I still had fun competing and socialising with my friends. It was nice to see each House participating and supporting each other regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard. I’m looking forward to Semester Two events at the College.

Ivanka Spiteri

At St John’s we have been working

together to “be connected” to our learning, to our own personal growth, to our College and to our community. Through the Wise Guys program and the supplementary activities around being an upstander and giving back to our community, we have continued to grow and learn. Together we are exploring how we are connected to our inner selves, our environment, each other and our God.

Our classroom learning, our extra-curricular activities, our social justice actions, our pastoral program and our experiences at home have all taken on the focus of knowing how we are connected. As you walk down our corridors and throughout our Campus you can see and feel the strong sense of community and connectedness that we have. This has all come together because of the constant love, support and encouragement of our staff and the commitment, joy and enthusiasm of our boys.

We look forward to next semester as we journey together, connected with one heart.

Michael Torpey

Our theme for the Sacred Heart campus

this year is ‘pride’. Students have been encouraged to show pride in their actions, their ability and their College. I am pleased to report that throughout the first half of the year I, along with the rest of the Sacred Heart staff, have been immensely proud of the students and the way they have carried themselves as senior learners. It has been particularly pleasing to see the way in which Year 10 students have come together and embraced the new opportunities that arise in the final years of schooling.

Year 10 and 11 cohorts recently undertook semester exams and the feedback from teachers about this process has been encouraging. For Year 12 students, the year is progressing smoothly and, it seems, incredibly quickly. Before long we will be looking to future pathways, be it further study or entry to the workforce.

Highlights of the semester include the very successful Year 12 retreat, the Year 11 and 10 Reflection Days and, of course, the senior formal which is always a fun night. The students have much to be proud of, and I wish them well in the second half of the year.

Debra Bonde

It’s been an exciting journey so

far and I am thrilled to be a part of a vibrant, diverse and close-knit community at Christ the King Campus. As the new director of campus, I was welcomed by staff and students alike – they have been amazing. I can’t believe Semester One is over, and what a semester it has been. As a campus, we have been involved in so many activities and events. Highlights of the first two terms include:

• Athletics House Carnival• Harmony Day• ANZAC Day• Literature Week• Careers Expo• Open Day

The girls have been working extremely hard with the support of their Learner Mentors, House Coordinators and subject teachers. Their talents and commitment to their learning and each other can be seen in how the approach House assemblies, Reflection Days, talent quests and other opportunities to represent their Campus.

As a campus, we are looking at ways to strengthen further ‘community’ through our Learner Mentor programs and students leaders. We are asking for more student voice representation in what they want to see at Christ the King and what the campus stands for.

I’m looking forward to Semester Two – not only for the many exciting events it has to offer, but to continue to see the growth in our young ladies and the impressive ways they have started 2019.

Staff Update Jane de Git – Christ the King Ambrose House Coordinator

The last six months have flown by, as I have learned what it means to be a House Coordinator at Christ the King Campus. I have loved being welcomed by staff,

students and parents. My transition from Queensland was made all the easier by the dedicated staff and hardworking students. It has been interesting, challenging and full of rewards. I look forward to the next six months of success and growth for all.

Erminia Apuzzo – Pastoral Worker

I recently joined the College as a Pastoral Worker. What is it? I support the Ministry Team and the whole school community to facilitate the Sacramental Programme and the Seasons for Growth program to build students’ resilience. I hope to provide more

opportunities during religion class and Learner Mentor time for students to reflect and explore their spirituality; discerning and re-engage with their faith journey and encouraging interfaith dialogue.

Nikolas Brudenell – St John’s Ambrose House Coordinator

It has been an extremely busy and exciting start for me at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College as a new House Coordinator. However, I have quickly come to appreciate the warm and caring nature of the learning

community. This is primarily due to the willingness of staff and students to assist with welcoming everyone new.

Robert Johns – VCAL Teacher

Starting at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Term Two has been both busy and enjoyable. I am a huge advocate for the VCAL Program and I have been impressed with the level of student engagement and participation at the College. The facilities

on offer are excellent and along with the expertise of a committed VCAL Teaching Team, I have no doubt the students will experience success on a range of levels.

Jeremy Wirges – Sacred Heart Galgani House Coordinator

Since joining the Caroline Chisholm Catholic College community, I have been so impressed with the warm and welcoming nature of the college community. The opportunities to form positive relationships

with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences has been something that I have enjoyed immensely, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen these existing relationships, and build new relationships as I continue to grow within my role here. We have much for which to be grateful, and I would like to thank the community for welcoming me, and allowing me the opportunities to grow, both professionally and personally.

Three Tales Three AgesYear 11 Theatre Studies students put on a one-hour show consisting of three amazing acts in our auditorium, from the styles of Greek, Shakespeare and Japanese Noh theatre. The performances were part of their assessment and having a receptive audience to perform in front was of great encouragement to the students.

Learning Area Updates

LanguagesThis semester, the languages staff and club worked extremely hard behind the scenes to ensure a cultural immersion.

We played host to Japanese students from Okinawa College and held a welcoming ceremony where they were given a warm reception to the College. During their stay in Australia, the students learnt a lot about the culture, history and environment in the place we call home.

Carnevale brought forward a selection of Italian cultural activities and food. Traditionally, Carnevale is a big final party before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions associated with Lent. Students and staff were able to purchase gelato and participate in a mask making competition.

On 7 May, the College celebrated the healthy growth and happiness of children with Japanese Children’s Day. In the morning, classes could participate in a carp coloring competition and a quiz. During lunch, students could purchase sushi or join in origami, coloring and calligraphy.

The Languages Centre was transformed into a colorful, vibrant and magical learning space that celebrated Italian and Japanese as a part of the annual College Open Day. Children could create masks and complete quizzes at the very popular creation station, while parents were able to speak to language students and staff about the languages and exchange programs offered to students by the College.

Next semester, our department will be hosting Languages Week and a new event each for Japanese and Italian.

Design & TechnologiesProduct Design and Systems students were busy this semester completing stools and marionettes, and battery operated racing cars.

SociologySociology is a great subject to understand how and why modern society is the way it is. Our studies begin by looking into the experiences of youth generations over the century. It also explores factors and other elements that may affect a person’s experience of youth, such as what education they received, their ethnicity and access to technology.

Our class interviewed and compared our experience of youth to the Japanese exchange student’s experiences of youth during their visit to the College earlier in the year. We discovered how different their schooling lives were from us, such as not being able to eat outside during lunchtime and having to study until 11pm at school!

In Sociology, we aim to observe and explain some of the behaviours that people exhibit. We get to do this by looking at different types of families, and how they are represented in movies and TV shows. This area is fascinating, as you start to understand how much influence the media has over how we view what a family should look like. We also compared families around the world and within our classroom. We looked at a typical family in China, compared it to Australia.

One highlight of our study was organising a Cultural Food Day to learn about our classmates, their families, and the culture that influences how different we all are. Each culture was represented by a dish in our class, and we learned its history and significance to their respective families. It was eye opening to see how different family norms can be around the world and within our classroom!

Sociology is an incredible subject as it assists us in understanding ourselves, as well as the world around us. Sociology has provided us with valuable insights into how human behaviours are shaped and influenced by societal factors.

ScienceIt has been an amazing first semester for our schools across all three campuses. Moreover, we are excited for Semester Two, as 18 students will be attending SEAMS, an amazing opportunity during the semester break. Strengthening Engagement and Achievement in Mathematics and Science (SEAMS) is an exciting opportunity for students to connect, interact, be inspired and discover the possibilities maths and science have to offer. The program, run in partnership with the University of Melbourne/Monash University, aims to increase equitable participation and attainment in science and maths in higher education.

A group of students will be off to Costa Rica over the term break as part of our Biology Immersion Study Tour. We can’t wait to hear all about their adventures!

ASX SHARE GAME

CAROLINE CHISHOLM CATHOLIC COLLEGE STUDENTS CHAD, DOMINIC ANDJAMES .

A group of Braybrook students wouldn’t be out of place on WallStreet, judging by a recent display of prowess.

A selection of year 10, 11 and 12 Caroline Chisholm CatholicCollege students took part in the ASX’s school sharemarketgame, where students learn about investing in the sharemarketand the economy.

VCAL teacher Tony Prosia led the students and said the resultsblew him away.

“In Australia, there were just under 19,000 syndications for theschools game and given most syndications are at least twopeople, we’re looking at about 40,000 participants,” he said.

Reading HourThe College came to complete silence for one hour during National Reading Hour on 9 May. Staff and students took the time to pick up a book and spend the hour reading.

Brings Books To LifeThe Literature Festival (6 – 10 May) is a celebration of reading and writing with author talks, writing workshops and many competitions across the College. There were a number of highlights including an evening event with author Maxine Beneba-Clarka, a literary lunch and an author talk presented by Kate O’Donnell, a newly published young adult fiction writer, and a writing workshop with Daniel Corcoran, a local author.

Tristan Bancks Book LaunchOn Tuesday, 11 June, I was fortunate to attend the launch and signing of author Tristan Bancks’ new book Detention, held at The Younger Sun bookstore in Yarraville. His other books include Two Wolves, The Fall, the Tom Weekly series and now Detention. It follows the journey of a young girl named Sima and her family held in a detention centre after fleeing their country. As they and others plan their escape from the centre, Sima loses her parents in the crowd and is left to fend on her own, and hides in a school triggering a lock down. A student named Dan finds her cowering in a toilet block at the school and is left to decide whether to help her or turn her into the authorities. Tristan gave his audience some great tips on how to go about getting ideas onto the page when writing and of the importance of research to get ideas, facts and keep motivated. He is working on getting some of his books onto the big screen! An inspiring author Tristan has always had a passion for writing. His ability to share ways to get the best out of writing, along with his great story telling and sense of humour made it a very enjoyable experience.
