Director's Drivel by Malcolm McIntyre

Who is ready to tour again? We just got back from doing

75 miles in our Model A. Not sure it was ideal to have the

temperature in degrees and the age of the car the same (91) but

we proved we could get out again and see people, and the car re-

membered what it was supposed to do. Yes, the restaurants in

our area are mostly still closed inside but we went to Watkins Mill

Park and everyone brought a picnic lunch and sat (apart) in a cir-

cle under the shade trees. I'm open to suggestions but I was

thinking perhaps June 20th and meeting somewhere in the

Perry Lake area and doing the same thing, just find a shady

spot and put chairs in a big circle. Any interest? I know that

most of the car shows are still cancelled, Wamego is cancelled,

heck they've cancelled Pebble Beach and Hershey already. As far

as meetings go - I don't know what the status of the Women's Club

is, but obviously June was to have been our picnic and the schools

of course are still all closed. I think this week our church will meet

in the building for the first time, we've been in the parking lot each

week so far. Kansas City has expanded venues like our church to

50% capacity as long as we maintain social distancing so its

changing daily. Let me know if there is interest in a tour and I'll get

details worked out.

Ed Note: Due to medical issues, The “75 Years Ago Along The Action Era Highways” will not appear in The Starterator for the immediate future. Please wish Kelly a speedy recovery and NO, it is not Covid-19.

A note from Mary Jean about Kelly

I just spoke to a person where Kelly is currently residing, and she told me it is OK for him to receive mail there. I don't know how long he will be there, but they have not yet begun much in the way of therapy, so may be a little while, at least. He's hoping to be out of there in a week. Not sure if that will happen or not. Given his history.........anything is possible. He has a really hard time hearing

on the phone so mail is probably best.

His address is.............

Kelly is released and recouping at home.

Hello and Goodbye Impala

First there was the show car Corvette Impala, 1954. The 1958 Bel-Air Impala became an executive car. From 1959 till 1964 the Impala

remained at the top of the Chevrolet line up.

Michael Landon drove the all new Impala through Virginia City. To com-pete with the new Galaxie Ltd, which was said to drive more quietly than a Rolls Royce, Chevrolet introduced the Impala Caprice, an Impala ex-ecutive car. 1966 gave the Caprice the top of the line Chevrolet. This

continued till 1984 when the Impala was discontinued.

1994 brought back the Impala SS. It sold for three years and then disap-

peared.

2002 saw the return of the lmpala and a new Impala was introduced in 2006. This model stayed on the road till 2014. In this person's opinion this was the best Impala ever made with room, handling and power. Unfortunately sales did not warrant keeping the Impala on the road. February brought the end of the Impala as a 2020 vehicle. Maybe it will

make a comeback some day.

Storage Can be Shaky

I picked up the Bel-Air on a Friday. The shifter was sticky and two new round Coker tires had arrived to replace the two that were out of round. The tires were replaced and the tires to be refunded were in the luggage compartment. When I went to get them, Max of Dean's mowers noticed that my right front tire was flat. He carries an air bubble in his van so he filled up the tire. Like the Lone Ranger he was gone immediately after

his work was finished. I had called AAA, and Big O Tires, who had replaced the tire and both arrived at the same time. The Big O man tried to start the car and the battery was dead. AAA called one of their jump start vehicles which started the car. We moved the

defective tires to UPS where most of this action occurred.

The last day of the month was the last day of free shipping for Amazon items. The line went out the door, with people safe distance between them, and only one clerk for the morning shift had arrived untill two more came at 12:30 pm. The clerk did not know how to look up Coker Tire, Chattanooga, TN, so I called them on my cell phone for the address.

The paperwork went with the tires and we were off to Big O once again.

The young man was very nice and figured out that the valve stem had been torn in the installation process. He fixed it and was happy to drive the car once again. I drove the car home and attached the battery

charger till this morning.

Huntington Park Auto took apart, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled the shift lever, so that it now shifts as well as it ever did. They also re-

placed the gold tailgate V.

Which wagon is which?

This past Sunday we ordered delivered food. A nice young man paid compliments to our station wagon. He thinks they ride and handle well, and he loved the styling. He would like one himself but he noted that you did not see many of them around. It was not till he'd left that it was our

Camry wagon, not the Bel-Air he was talking about.

1956 Oldsmobile Super 88 4dr Sedan, Model 3669D by Rich Gibbs

I purchased the Olds in the spring of 2001 from a friend that had owned it since 1983. I first saw it at a Car Show in October 1983. It turns out that he bought the car at the Show. I really like the color, Nordic Blue and Alcan White. It reminded me of a 1955 Super 88 that my cousin owned in my formative years of the early to mid 60s.

As it turns out, my friend bought the car because he and his wife owned a ’56 when they were newly-weds and they wanted to use it as an occasional daily driv-er. After driving it a few times, they decided it was too nice to use in that manner and only drove it to a few Car Shows. Their decision to not use it as a driv-er was all the better for me.

After many years admiring the Olds, I heard he was offering the car for sale. I showed up at his home on a Saturday morning to check it out, road tested it and decided it was going to transfer to my collection. It would be my first Oldsmobile. I have a modest col-lection of Buicks, twelve in all, three Cadillacs and the Olds. Before I took delivery, he installed four new Coker Classic radial tires since the tires on the Olds were on the car in 1983. It was time for a change.

The car was purchased from Max Griffith Oldsmobile in Kansas City, MO. A few years ago, a photo of the dealership was featured on the cover of Fusick’s cat-alog; featuring a ’58 Olds parked in front of the build-

ing. Sadly, the building is long gone replaced by a fast-food res-taurant. The orig-inal colors were Alcan White over Island Coral. The Olds was pur-chased from the original owner’s estate and re-painted by a col-lector in Topeka, KS. The original beige interior is now under a set of blue seat covers, door panels are also covered with blue vinyl material. Instrument panel was painted to complement the color change. It’s not technically correct and will never be a show car.

The Olds is equipped with Jetaway Hydra-Matic; power steering; power brakes, clock and radio. I found a set of courtesy lights & switch; front/rear speaker & switch in a salvage yard and added them to the car as appropriate for a “Super 88”. I am still looking for back-up lights to complete the options list. I am planning on adding air-conditioning and an alter-nator (to cope with the electrical load) to make a comfortable tour car.

I hope you like it…I do!
