How did Halloween get to be so much fun? The party shops are decked with the wonderful orange and black must-have accessories for aspiring witches, vampires and ghouls of all shapes and sizes. Our greengrocers’ tables are groaning with fabulous looking pumpkins ready for easy carving and velvety soup. At risk of sounding like a very old woman, this is all a far cry from when I were a lass in Yorkshire. We carved our lanterns out
of swedes and turnips – a project that really sorted the men from the boys. They were heavy, solid and impossible to cut: the whole thing took forever. If you finally did hollow enough out and could still count to ten on unsevered fingers, your reward was the delightful aroma of scorched root vegetable when
you finally lit your candle. Let’s just say they belonged
outdoors. While pumpkin carving and trick or treating may seem like an American import, it’s actually
the Celts that gave us Halloween. Its history
is suitably murky, but experts think it’s a festival to celebrate harvest and mark the end of summer. Christians later used it, as the eve of All Saints Day, to pray for the recently departed and souls in purgatory. The first trick or treaters were actually children who went house-to-house collecting soul cakes (spicy fruit buns) in exchange for prayers. So if you’re doing something horribly fiendish this year, do it right. Shop local, be creative and don’t skimp on the dressing up. Halloween doesn’t have to be about trashy Americanisms: we have lots of traditions of our own. Spare a thought for elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may not welcome a knock on the door after dark. Stay safe and be glad you don’t have to carry a smelly turnip with you - that’s the true meaning of horror.

Ingredients250g black turtle beans2 large onions1-2 tsps of diced dried chipotle chillies1 tsp cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika1 chopped green pepper1 tsp olive oil1 vegetable stock cubeSeasoning: salt & pepper1/2 litre of water (or more if necessary)
Ingredients4–6 tomatoes, mostly seeded and chopped2 diced white onions2 minced cloves of garlic
Half a bunch of fresh coriander, very fi nely chopped2–4 chipotles (or equivalent) rehydrated & pureedJuice from 1 or 2 limes Salt & pepper to taste
MethodSoak the beans for between two and four hours, then cook them in plenty of water.Chop the onion and pepper and fry them with the chipotle chillies and olive oil, stirring frequently. When onions
are cooked, add the cumin and the paprika, stirring continuously. Add the cooked beans, season with the vegetable cube, salt and pepper.Serve with warmed tortillas, guacamole, salsa or a green salad.

Tales of superstition prevail, as the station master – unable to persuade them to leave – reveals that that very night, twenty years ago, a train crashed, leaving a number of passengers dead. Chorlton Players host a spooky Halloween performance
This is a book that hasn’t received the attention it deserves. It’s got a little bit of everything that a good read needs. A great mixture of laughter, tragedy and a dark secret which all combine to make an excellent story.Ben is at the end of his tether, with no job, no family life and very few friends left. After finally pulling himself together, he completes a caregiver’s course, which leads him to taking a job looking after disabled teenager, Trev. The two form an unlikely friendship and take a road trip together to visit Trev’s absent father. Along the way, taking in some of
the most random tourist attractions that America has to offer. Despite having a rejuvenating effect on Trev, the road trip fails to shift Ben’s unending sadness. Is there any way he can ever find peace?One of the great things about this book is that it never turns into a sickly sweet story about lost hope and then redemption. What we get is a funny and frank book which depicts real life, warts and all. This will appeal to people who enjoyed, The Shock of The Fall and The Universe Verses Alex Woods.• Review by Joanna Legerton

To put together the walks and cycles in Discover Where You Live over the last few months I have used maps, both paper and online. Including OS 1:25,000 map 277 Manchester & Salford and Open Street Map. People may think that using a map and compass is only for getting around remote locations, however maps can really help you get to know your local area much more intimately. Many of us stick to the same familiar routes whether driving, walking or cycling, and feel we know Chorlton, the Meadows, and the area around us well enough. Maps, even of a place as familiar as Chorlton Meadows can reveal nooks, crannies, short cuts and paths which can easily be missed if you aren’t looking for them. When researching a navigation walk, Map Reading on the Meadows, which I ran as part of Chorlton Arts Festival earlier this year I ‘discovered’ a pond I hadn’t known was there, and I have enjoyed the Meadows
for many years. Maps embody so much information about the world around us, so what does the map tell us about Chorlton Ees? There are few rights of way. On the map, rights of way are green lines and tell you where you can walk. They’re enshrined in law and reflect historic and sometimes ancient routes. Short dashed lines are footpaths, boots only; long dashed lines are bridleways for boots, hooves and wheels. On the Meadows, instead of footpaths there are tracks (black dashed lines) which indicate there is a track on the ground but not necessarily a legal right of way for the public. There are also routes suitable for cyclists marked by a string of orange circles, this tells me this is not a historic route, otherwise it would be a bridleway. The lack of footpaths and bridleways tells me that this land
hasn’t historically been accessed by people. David Bishop of Friends of Chorlton Meadows tells us, ‘From the late 19th century until the late 1970s, agriculture was gradually displaced from the Mersey Valley and what was deposited on the ees was not ‘rich mud’ but the growing city’s effluent in the form of sewage works and rubbish dumps.’ Now we know why!So get yourself a map and explore the wonderful suburban countryside on our doorstep. How would you describe your music in three words? Dreamy, lo-fi, folk.
What are you currently working on? I’m putting the finishing touches to my debut album, which I’ve spent the last five years working on with my cousin Ed. I really want it to be as good as I can get it. My songs are short, so I want to do 15 or 16 tracks. It should still clock in at under 40 minutes.
How do you see the future of Manchester music? I imagine it will get more and more diverse. I’ve noticed a big shift away from Oasis-esque indie.
There’s so much amazing music and musicians in the city. Playing with Songs for Walter has made me aware of the folk scene, that I didn’t really know existed.
Who are your favourite Chorlton artists?DBH, as many readers will know, is one of the most amazing musicians in the city, probably in the UK as a whole. His album Time Flies is a wonderful record. I’ve always been a fan of Jo Rose, his debut album sounds amazing. Oh, and Fully Mared are great.Mat Grey is Chorlton’s answer to George Formby. His lyrics are hilarious, really fun songs.
What’s your favourite Chorlton venue? I’d have to say Dulcimer. I have always really wanted to play a gig in my favourite bar, Pi. Not sure how feasible it would be though.I still think Chorlton is lacking a really decent music venue, which is strange for a suburb that’s full of musicians! Someone really ought to do it.
Where can people see you next?My next Manchester show is at the Carefully Planned Festival on October 18th. I’ll be playing at the mint lounge.• Interview by Joe Beech

I have visited quite a few gardens this summer, mainly in the North as part of a holiday or two, to get some design ideas as well as to appreciate the range of effects designers can create in larger spaces (with a smidgeon of hankering for a large garden with a Victorian garret and small orangery…). Towards the end of last month, I visited the walled garden at Scampston Hall not far from Pickering in Yorkshire, made famous by the Dutch designer Piet Oudolf, who was commissioned in 1999 to redesign the space. The garden is divided up into different rooms and this is the time to see it – late flowering perennials come into their own in September and October, as do the myriad grasses that he has used to quite spectacular effect. One of the gardens, Drifts of Grass, is absolutely amazing and very brave using only, well, drifts of grass - Molinia caerulea ssp. caerulea ‘Poul Petersen’ to be precise. The effect is quite staggering: if you squint a little bit, clear bands of colour start to emerge, rocket-lolly-like, from the dark green base, through the lighter lime-green stems to the brown fuzz of the seed heads. This would be a great effect in a domestic garden if you have the room and are brave enough just to plant one variety of grass. Further on, I initially found the Silent Garden a bit boring with its clipped cylinders of yew symmetrically arranged around a simple rectangular pond. Only because my partner wanted a rest from my incessant plant-chat did I sit it out and actually fell in love with it after a few minutes quiet. It is, without a doubt, contemplative and cleverly mimics (in my view) the grandeur of Roman or Grecian colonnades in a contemporary take on the formal garden.Scampston is open until November 2nd and there are various things on throughout the month, including a walk with the head gardener on October 28th.

Now I have passed this spot on Range Road countless times, but it took the keen eye of Andy Robertson to set the story going.The jury may be out on whether using the facade of an old building and constructing something entirely new behind it constitutes good design but I rather like the idea. If you can’t use the original for what it was intended this, at least, allows a little of its history to be preserved and in the process gives a context to this bit of Range Road. It also prompted me to try and understand what this building was and, more importantly, how it fits with the rest of the structure on the corner of Range and Withington Roads.Today the bits of what was once one building look odd and pretty much defy any attempt to make sense of what is a brick block with a canopy on one side of it. If I think hard enough I can just remember it as a garage and that is about it. You would see it as you passed on the bus and it never really intruded very deeply. It was just a jumble of ugly bits of building made worse by someone’s attempt to paint some of the brick work.But once it belonged to the Manchester Carriage and Tramway Company and extended along Withington Road and round on to Range Road. The company had been formed from a merger of two transport businesses in 1880 and for over 20 years operated horse drawn tram services throughout Manchester and Salford. At its greatest extent in 1900 it ran services over 140
route miles, using 515 trams and 5,244 horses, housed in 19 depots.And our building was one of those depots, with another close by on Chorlton Road.But by the early 20th century local authorities were showing an interest in operating their own Corporation transport services and the Manchester Carriage and Tramway Company ceased trading in 1903.So while in 1894 our building was one of their depots, by 1911 it had moved with the times and was home to the Provincial Motor
Cab Company Ltd. But this ‘new century’ enterprise had no use for all of the original building and so the stretch on Range Road was used by Mrs Emma Thompson as a laundry.And that pretty much is where we started the story, with that picture of Andy’s, which was once part of a horse drawn tram empire, became a laundry and now fronts private residences.And for those who want to peel back the building’s history, there is a fine selection of pictures of the building in the 1960s when it was the Range Garage. People of all ages enjoyed a celebration of nature’s home last month as the RSPB and Manchester City Council invited everyone to discover the wildlife in the Mersey Valley.Launching the partnership between the council and the RSPB, a Giving Nature a Home festival took place at Chorlton Water Park and Fletcher Moss, Didsbury on the Weekend of 6th September.The weekend celebrations, which also marked the RSPB’s
125th anniversary, began on Friday with the official launch of the partnership at Fletcher Moss – the place where the RSPB was founded in 1889, in protest against the barbarous trade in plumes for women’s hats.Jo Keene, RSPB Senior People Engagement Officer, said: “One of the highlights was the birthday bird cake, which was created from various types of bird food and looked fabulous. People enjoyed helping to create it and what better way to mark the RSPB’s anniversary? We want

The Lloyds Hotel had set themselves the target of four wins on their difficult away fixture at King and Queen in the Manchester Premier League.Dave Carter got them on the way with a 21-13 win in the opening game and this was followed by a welcome 21-7 win by Steve Ridley (pictured). Defeats for father and son Dave and Ben Phillips and Ryan Sandham put the home team back in charge but Michael McDonnell picked up the required point with a 21-16 success.In the West Counties Super
League, Lloyds were at home to Rudheath and kept up their title hopes with a convincing 13-6 victory. On the winners’ rostrum for Lloyds were Pete Smith, Steve Ridley, Dave and Ben Phillips, Dave Jackson and Paul Dooley.The Sale and District League played the Eric Dale Pairs Knock Out finals with eight pairs competing. Coming out on top were SMRBL duo Danny Horan and Rob Jordan.In a thrilling final they beat Longford’s Malcolm Cooper and Ross Cavanagh by 21-20.
In the semi-finals Horan and Jordan overcame Mike Bacon and John Davies (Fallowfield) 21-18 and Cooper and Kavanagh beat Chris Cox and Barrie Holland (SMRBL) 21-15.
