do século XIX.
mangueiras, o rio onipresente, a amplitude do céu e muitos outros detalhes.

Preparando minha viagem, observo
freqüentemente essa foto estranha. Além do fenômeno meteorológico em curso,
algo parece anormal. Onde estariam os reflexos do barco? A água é tão fosca
As construções
As formas, as cores, o tamanho,
deste hall construído no início do século.
isolada do resto do mundo.
A chuva
Junto a Nossa
Aguardando a instalação oficial, a eletricidade
Progressivamente a cidade integra esses novos
norte-americanos.
quase repousante.
O guarda-chuva vermelho
francesa, o barroco, o rococó, o estilo império brasileiro e o neoclássico (a gente
Vistos do avião,
A cor,
As
a qual meio social elas pertençam.
bairros populares parece nunca querer adormecer totalmente.
Bar do Gilson
No
Batista...
bairro.
Ele teve a boa idéia e, sobretudo, a
A sorte quis, vinte
estar à beira do mar.
belenenses a freqüentam regularmente.
passarem. Opa, essa luz me lembra alguma coisa. E onde será que foram parar
os reflexos desse barco? Há confirmações que dão satisfação. O fenômeno existe.
É mais fácil representá-lo que explicá-lo, mas ele é bem real. Um simples jogo
de luz entre o sol e a água. Uma miragem invertida.
Agradecimentos
Storm 1982
From my first trip to Belém, during the Eighties, I kept the remembrance of afishing port bathed by an almost unreal light, vibrant with life, noises andunknown smells. An unexplainable mixture of subtle and violent sensations,as if out of a dream. I also recall another image, a bit more palpable, but just astroubling: a photo taken on the river at the brink of a storm. While gettingready for my trip, I often gaze at this strange photo. Whether the meteorologicalevent in place, there is something in it that seems abnormal. How to explainsuch reflects of the boat? The water is so still that it seems spread like a rugover the sand. If I need a reason for this new trip to Belém, it will be to capturea bit of this unusual light.
The port
The fishing port is a magical place that my memory refuses to erase throughoutthe years. Maybe because it is located in the middle of an immense market whereone can find all that the Amazon region produces in terms of fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, live animals, arts and crafts, culinary spices and herbs and medicinalplants. Also because it is overseen by the elegant iron structures of the "Ver-o-Peso" market, in which one can weight what one buys. Its construction recalls analready ancient belle époque, but its style is definitely timeless. At dawn, whilethe light of the new day slowly triumphs over the electric illumination, thekingfishers are finally alone to enjoy some few hours of tranquility just before theintense activity of yet another day of fishing business starts.
The fish market
Here what is hidden behind the yellow opacity of the river! Doradas, filhotes, piranhas, tucunarés, piramubatas... At the beginning, it is not easy for a foreignvisitor to avoid a zoological glance and it takes a while before one considersthe fish on display as food. Their shapes, colors and sizes call for total attention(and for caution before entertaining any future idea of river baths). Observingthe men wearing white, as nurses do, handling and cutting these largelyunknown species, one soon forgets the luminous architecture of the market, which was built at the beginning of last century in an epoch when the rubberbusiness made some people so rich that their clothes were custom-made…in France.
The meat market
Without doubt, iron is not the most appropriate material to endure the harshnessof an equatorial weather. It doesn't do well under high levels of atmospherichumidity. Nevertheless, iron is what the epoch's engineers chose to use when
building this sector of Ver-o-Peso. Manufactured in England and shipped toBelém in loose pieces, the several elements of the building were put together asa gigantic toy. When one fathoms the almost interminable reserves of woodthat surround the city, one is dismayed by the evidence that the epoch's architects(very much like some contemporary architects) were more sensitive to the currentfashionable style and materials than to more practical considerations. But I'mnot the one to complain, since the rust is kept at bay by periodical hands ofgreen, pink and red paint that produce the most beautiful effect.
Low tide
From certain angles, Belém reminds us of an island. The Guajara bay in thenorth, the Guama river in the south and west, and the forest (another uniformand undulating expanse, only not liquid) all around, give the impression thatthe city is isolated from the rest of the world. When looking at the horizon, thesmall stretch of greenery at the distance looks for sure like the other margin ofthe river. One couldn't believe it is truly only a line of small islands (about fortyof them, all about of the same size) in the middle of the river, the same breadthof water at the other side. The scale is gigantic; there is water all around. Whenthe water isn't going up and down in a sea tide movement (the ocean is only 60miles away) in the wilderness of the Amazon, it is condensed as steam and thenas clouds only to unavoidable pour down again as rain.
The rain
The water cycle is especially perceptible from December to May, since it rainsreligiously everyday in this period of the year. I'm not sure if it brings thehappiness of those in the umbrella business, but it certainly guarantees them asteady income. Differently to the tropical storms that are usually brief andviolent, nobody can tell how long an equatorial storm will last. A popular sayingstates that in Belém it rains every day during the dry season, and during the wetseason it rains the whole day. One sees umbrella sellers all over, whether theyare sold in regular stores or at the streets. There are all kinds of styles, shapesand colors of umbrellas, from the most simple to the most elegant and expensive. There is never a lack of clients. When the rain stops, the umbrellas turn intoefficient parasols, often overlaid with anti-UV metal lining.
Street owners (Flanelinhas)
Every city may boast having places of contrast. In general they relate to eachother like a magnet, the richest pole naturally rebuffing the poorest pole. Belém isnot different, but it is arranged in a slightly different fashion. In the rhythm of theexpansion of the poorest neighborhoods coupled with modernist push, the richesof yesterday are side by side with today's poverty. Ancient monuments seem
modest before modern buildings; while wooden huts enclose small islands ofelegant houses. Mirroring the luxuriant Amazon forest that surrounds the city, everything mingles here in a chaos that inspires more harmony than disorder. Aharmonic disorder though, in which all elements seem to desire to grow and toexpand and to force its own space. Around the Our Lady of Nazaré cathedral, these men wash cars using only a piece of cloth. They call the drivers attention toan available parking space, and they volunteer for washing the cars while keepingan eye on them. Their attitude suggests they are the real owners of the street.
Kites
There are no slums in Belém. The neighborhoods that remind them are called"invasões", or, when situated at lowlands, "baixadas". In both cases, they areunruly collective or individual settlements. Their inhabitants barely survive withthe minimum, but they are not excluded (a third of the city's population live inthese poor quarters). Their wooden houses built on stakes are the exact copy ofthose found on the rivers of the whole region. While waiting to be officiallyrecognized, their electricity and water are often diverted from neighboringquarters. Sewage is the worst problem of these places. Often used water is justdropped under the house. The regulation is done little by little, but rarely thefirst inhabitants are those who profit from it. Slowly the city integrates thesenew quarters, while other "invasões" sprout elsewhere.
Over 100o F under the shade
According to the inhabitants of these poor quarters themselves, their life qualitylies on good relationship between neighbors, mutual support and tranquility, rather than on modern urban comforts. When the path is turned into a road andtraffic and noise invade the district, those who are able to will be the first ones tosell their houses and go live somewhere else. When we observe families enjoyinga resting time playing dominos under a shade, or simply seated at the entrance oftheir houses at the end of the day, or when we watch children manufacturing kiteswith plastic bags, or bike riding, we do not forget that social inequality in Brazil isone of the worst in the world, but we can't deny them a real art de vivre.
Rowing
From afar and especially if seen from the river, the business quarter, wheredowntown's most important and largest buildings are found, reminds us of asmall Manhattan. The buildings, nevertheless, are quite shorter, and if they deserveto be called skyscrapers, it is because the sky often seems closer to the ground inthese latitudes. Most of them are not higher than 20 or 25 floors, but theirproportions are the same of their American cousins. They occupy the exact amountof terrain the old house they replaced had, and they often offer just one apartment
per floor. Empty land is quite rare in Belém's downtown. When one observes well(vertical to the white crane that flies around the image) one recognizes the profileof a greenish-gray Statue of Liberty, which confirms the desire of a New Yorkeraffiliation. An architectural style for microclimates? The temperatures at the bottomof these buildings are much higher than elsewhere in the city. Coolness is foundat the higher floors, or on the water, if you don't row to fast.
Horse and carriage
The first dwellers of a quarter are in general traders of construction materials. They supply the newcomers with the essential elements for building their houses. The experts know how to recognize a good piece of wood by its smell. The odorthat comes from the warehouses on the banks of Guama river is quite distasteful. It smells of stagnate water. After having witnessed the draining sewage underelevated houses by an army of municipal workers wearing yellow T-shirts, I canassure this smell is even worst. The large amount of pure water that falls dailyfrom the sky surely can explain the phenomenon. These wood stores also havethe odor of a past that refuses to disappear. The many horses that continue tocrowd the avenues pushing wagons of wood in the middle of a traffic that getsmore and more contemporary make one think that the city is not developing ina uniform manner. If is true that it is getting modern vertically, on the ground itstill go about according to an archaic model.
The iron-sheet house
The geographic location of Belém, on the delta of the Amazon river and near theEquator, explains the humidity level of about 90%. A kind of brume-or vapor, tobe precise-, envelops the city, and grants a unique quality to its light, which isat the same time violent and diffuse, as if coming from all directions at once. The light spreads itself thoroughly; it flattens all relief, dissipates shadows andmakes all marks disappear. Whether would pose some few challenges to thewatercolorist doesn't affect the dazzling effect of the image. He works amidstan even more troubling universe, one truly devoid of marks, but he paints it withsuch easy and naturalness that everyone is astonished. For cars, bikes andpedestrians alike, the streets of this popular neighborhood are filled with smallstones. One at the end gets so used to them that, after returning to France, thecity of Paris seems almost too plain.
Red umbrella
The light of Belém has no equivalent. It melts down all shapes, so that if onesubtracts the equatorial vigor and hotness that goes with it, one could believebeing… in some Parisian quarter during specific seasons of the year. In certaindowntown streets, the comparison takes other elements than the light. Several
buildings, inspired by the Old Continent's architecture, invokes the historicalpast of the city after its foundation in 1616, and above all its days of glory in thefirst years of the 20th century.
Gables on the street
Between the original Portuguese colonial style, the Art-nouveau style of the FrenchBelle-Époque, the baroque, the rococo, the style of the Brazilian empire, the neo-classic (a little lost, but the remaining buildings are excellent geographic landmarks),it is the history of a city turned toward Europe that calls one's attention amidst theoften ill-kept alleys. After costly and careful restorations, some of these buildingsoffer to the eyes the features they had a century or more ago. Their surroundingshave been changed, modern buildings are now around them, but they forge theimage of the city and mark the rhythm of life as much as the river does.
Boats
The river creates a dreamlike atmosphere. It releases a reassuring strengthand sweetness. Even the motor pirogues, the pôpôpôs and the boats carryingwood go by with such discretion that from afar they sound like music. Onemorning, while I daydreamed watching boats of all forms and shapes go by,the image of a large enveloping and protecting snake came to me. Suchimage, associated to a river, is nothing extraordinary. Seen from above, therivers of this region keep an evident similitude with this reptile. The color, thesparkling on the water's surface, the seemingly slowness of their movements, everything reminds this animal. I wasn't surprised to learn, quite late in mytrip, that according to the legend every Amazon village is protected by thesleep of a snake.
Mango trees
Belém is also known as Cidade das Mangueiras, the city of mango trees. Thenumerous trees of this kind, planted at the beginning of the 20th centuryalongside the avenues in downtown, became the symbol of the city. They grantto the city a relaxing atmosphere that one searches in vain in other large citiesin Brazil. At the example of the old buildings with perfectly harmonious shapes, these trees confer to this sector of Belém a harmony that the multitude ofmodern buildings without great aesthetic interest was not able to corrupt. If weare now in beautiful quarters, it is mostly due to the grace that these trees-thatbecame majestic in time-confer to it.
Park
The mango trees mingled their branches with the branches of other species in
parks and other green spaces that refresh some sectors of Belém's downtown. They were created during an epoch when the greatest cities of Europe were alsobuilding gardens and parks filled with exotic species, and they help to turnBelém somewhat familiar to a Parisian visitor like me. They are the tangiblemark of a similar way of planning a city that continues to offer its testimonytoday and surely could inspire new projects of urbanism. The park keeps thetraffic away, and invites numeral small artisans that profit both from its freshnessand from the clientele formed by lovers of shade and greenery.
Xerox
At the poorest neighborhoods, the construction and the outer decorationof the houses are delegated to the imagination of their owners. Some ofthem, the wealthiest, compete with their neighbors in inventively whendifferentiating their homes. The results are gladdening. With their obliquelines, their facades covered by ceramic tiles or lively colored paint, with theiriron grades and balustrades, they grant to certain corners of the streets achaotic and joyful atmosphere. One crosses many beautiful girls in all quartersof Belém. It is difficult to tell from which neighborhood they come from. They also rival each other in creativity and elegance while applying, eachone according to her own taste, the criteria of the last international fashion.
The Cathedral at night
D. Frei Caetano Brandão Square, simply called Cathedral Square (Largo da Sé),is especially impressive at night. The outline of the cathedral, which is made ofstones and alabaster, seems phantasmagoric amidst an empty space crossedby the railroad of a long past epoch. We can't avoid thinking of the challengesthe masons faced when building it, and of the effect it produced, rising in suchsupernatural way, on the men of the 18th Century used to an uniform worldlargely occupied by forests. At the time when the sellers of coconut gatheraround it, all the spotlights are directed towards the cathedral. The movingshadows remind damned souls in quest of an impossible rest.
Açai
In contrast to the city's downtown, full of people during the day and emptiedof all activity as soon as night falls, it seems that the popular quarters ofBelém never totally goes to sleep. Actually, the Brazilians I met in this andother cities always gave me the impression that they consider sleep a waste oftime. In any case, it is quite pleasant to enjoy a bit of the night's coolnessdrinking a cold Cerpa (the local beer) seated at the balcony of one of theluncheonettes opened almost the whole night. Every so often a red lightindicates the small places where one can find açai. It is the fruit of a palm tree
of which is produced a juice of very unique taste, which one can drink withsugar and manioc flour or eat as a kind of ice cream. Along with guarana, tucupi and jambu (and Cerpa, of course) it is one of the greatest localspecialties.
Gilson's Bar
Music is very much present in the popular quarters. In fact, music is naturallyfound everywhere. Near Carnival, it is not uncommon to bump with groups ofabout fifty musicians, practicing their presentation in the middle of the streets, and directing an improvised ballet of cars and pedestrians. Large, transportableand ultramodern sound-systems (reminding us of an inter-galactic futurism)are found everywhere, and they are able to make multitudes dance with thesound of techno music whenever there is enough space. Gilson's Bar becamea specialist in "chorinho", a musical style very much marked by its Portugueseorigins. Like all places where music is a major part of a deeply enrooted popularculture, the musicians of Belém, no matter what style, are excellent.
E-cyber
The teenagers who enjoy the breeze in the streets finally free from trafficprobably do not have the means to enjoy the benefits of Internet surfing.Instead, they simply wait for the return of a single bike they all share, in orderto depart in their turn and in pairs, for a tour around the house. At the sametime, their parents may be participating of one of these meetings in celebrationof new cults. Often installed inside a simple store or even a mundane garage, these new churches, lit by neon lights and right on the street, are visible fromafar. The Pentecostal Church, God's Assembly, The Universal Church, theBaptist Church… Very much in fashion in the popular quarters, they attractmore and more followers. In spite of not bringing real solutions to their dailychallenges, these churches are replacing, in a disturbing rate, the traditionalpopular associations of these districts.
Behind the church
The Amazon nature little by little regains possession of the very beautiful OurLady of Mercy church (the building, seen here from the back, doesn't look anybetter at front). Humidity and rain wash the walls and grant them an aspectfitting to the building's style and age. It was originally built in 1640. A testimonyof the energy of the sunlight, the weather, and the exuberance of the vegetation, and contrary to all appearances, this church, destroyed and rebuilt severaltimes, was totally restored in… 1986. For sure that is the reason why very fewcars in the region are more than ten years old. The last pick-up that made us thefavor of crossing the image is one of the few exceptions.
Bica
A disco in the middle of the jungle. This is the French equivalent that comes tomind when one sees the small gathering of wooden buildings that houses arestaurant, a bar and a dancing floor, all around a natural swimming pool. Assoon as one exits Belém, one finds oneself surrounded by forest. Whileperforming his work as lumberjack, thirty years ago, the owner of this piece ofland found a waterhole. There is water all around, but this one was clear andmineral, which was quite unusual. He had the good idea, and the courage, ofputting up a washbasin surrounded by stones (brought one by one from Belém,by boat and then on ass back, covering over twenty miles of distance), and withhis own hands he built the huts around it. Lucky, twenty years later, a road wasbuilt nearby. Today, a popular and joyful clientele visits this corner of the forest.Children laughter and screams are heard during the day, while at night there isthe unmistakable sound of dancing music.
Mosqueiro
A bridge connects the island of Mosqueiro, the largest of the forty islandsincluded in the town of Belém, to the continent. It is located only about fiftymiles from the city's downtown, but it takes about two hours to get there by car. Here lies the preferred little village of the inhabitants of Belém. It has all elementsthat give Belém its charm, but in a more rural version. During the hottest hoursof the day, while the luxurious old villas of the coast silently fall apart, someenjoy the pleasures of the beach. Never minding the color of the water, onefeels as if in the ocean. In this region, the river forms a large bay of about 20miles of extension.
Felicia
As large as Switzerland, located in the middle of the Amazon delta, the islandof Marajó deserved a whole book for itself. It is impossible to go around it,simply because of its dimensions. Marajó is not part of Belém, but itsinhabitants visit the island often. It is better to get up early and caught thefirst boat (the second goes more slowly and sometimes doesn't leave at all). Ittakes three and half hours on boat plus half-hour by mini-bus to arrive at thesmall village of Joanes. Once there, one feels that time has stopped. Twostreets bordered by short houses intersect forming a straight angle near along white sanded beach shared by fishermen, visitors housed in modestlodges and buffalos. These animals live in freedom and are found everywherein the island-there are about 60 thousand of them. At evening, everyonegathers around a table in Felicia's (except the buffalos, of course) to drink abeer and play checkers while listening to music. It will be hard to take thereturning boat.
Grues Docks
Frequently, in the middle of the afternoon, the clouds turn black. Flashes oflightning run through them, announcing storm and rain, but often nothinghappens and the sky remains clear, as if it had suddenly changed its mind. Theweather is unpredictable; but the long docks forming a promenade are the idealplace to watch the boats going by. Here, the light reminds me of something. Ah,and where are the reflections of the boat? The confirmation brings me joy. Thephenomenon is real. It is easier to photograph it than to explain its causes, butit exists: a play of light between the sun and the water. A mirage turned upside-down.
