Oriental Magpie Robin - Scientific name:Copsychus saularis; Size: 20-22cm

By CK. Subramaniam

Today morning Iwas able to spot an Ori-ental Magpie Robin inSanpada park. Beingmonsoon season suchunique species of birdscan be spotted in themarshy land of the sat-ellite city. But suchrare species coming tothe mark is very un-common. A smart piedchat with prominentwhite wing markingsand white underparts.Male is glossy blue-black, and the female adull grey above. Thisbird gave me a closelook and I was able tocapture that with mycamera work with ascanned copy and aclose up one.

The top city song-ster. The male poursout a rich melody often

from the top a tallperch. Individuals areterritorial and visitfavourite feeding placeswhere the diet of in-sects and leftovers areeasily available. Todaymorning I picked upthe bird in the pit madefor compost in SanpadaPark. Often nest inman made structures

and abandoned pipesetc. Can be remarkablytame. It is found inopen woodland, forestedge, farms, towns andcities. It is considered tobe widespread residentacross the country.Scarce in north-west-ern India. Capturedduring my regularmorning walk.

A day to remember - 26th July2019 Kargil Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwasis observed on this dayevery year, markingsuccessful conclusion ofthe war with Pakistanin the Kargil-Drass sec-tor of Jammu andKashmir in 1999. TheKargil war was foughtfor more than 60 days, ended on 26 July andresulted in the loss oflife on both the sides. The war ended withIndia regaining controlof all the occupied ter-ritory and Pakistanwithdrew it forces ac-cepting defeat.

The town of Kargilis located 205 km (127mi) from Srinagar, fac-ing the Northern Areasacross the LOC. Likeother areas in the Hi-malayas, Kargil has atemperate climate.Summers are cool withfrigid nights, while win-ters are long and chillywith temperatures of-ten dropping to “48 °C(“54 °F). The war is oneof the most recent ex-amples of high-altitudewarfare in mountain-ous terrain, whichposed significant logis-tical problems for thecombating sides.

Kargil was targetedpartly because the ter-

rain was conducive tothe preemptive seizureof several unoccupiedmilitary positions. Withtactically vital featuresand well-prepared de-fensive posts atop the

peaks, a defender on thehigh ground would en-joy advantages akin toa fortress. Any attackto dislodge a defenderfrom high ground inmountain warfare re-quires a far higher ra-tio of attackers to de-fenders, and the diffi-culties would be exacer-bated by the high alti-tude and freezing tem-

peratures.The aim of the Pa-

kistani incursion wasto sever the link be-tween Kashmir andLadakh and cause In-dian forces to withdraw

from the Siachen Gla-cier, thus forcing Indiato negotiate a settle-ment of the broaderKashmir dispute. Paki-stan also believed thatany tension in the re-gion would internation-alize the Kashmir is-sue, helping it to securea speedy resolution.

NAVI MUMBAI: Nearlyevery married coupledreams about cradlingtheir own baby. It is awish, a longing, aprayer and that amongall the first-time expect-ant parents along withtheir close relatives andfamily friends wait forthat beautiful day whenthey can cuddle the newborn baby. While hav-ing a baby is one of themost wonderful experi-ences in this world, in-ability to conceive caus-es a heartache that isincomparable. Inabilityto procreate leads to themost distressing feel-ings like anger, grief, depression, loss of self-esteem and confidenceand added anxiety. In-fertility or inability toconceive naturally isstill considered as a ta-boo in our society andeven today, women whocannot conceive, feeloutcast from the soci-ety.

Research has shownthat infertility levelshave increased by 20 to30% over last 5 years inIndia. Infertility is nowneither limited only tocities nor to womenalone. Lot of men alsoface issues that hamperconception and womenin rural areas are equal-ly susceptible. Whilethere are many reasonsthat lead to infertility, obesity has become oneof the leading causes forfailure to conceive. Notonly it exposes one tovarious health issueslike Type 2 diabetes,

tients who are battling infertility.Obese women have a lower implantation rate,

a higher miscarriage rate and increased chancesof complications during pregnancy. They are alsoknown to have a higher failure rate with assistedreproductive techniques like in vitro fertilization. They are also more prone to have a cesarean sec-tion as compared to normal vaginal delivery. Worstof all they have a lower chance of giving birth to ahealthy newborn as compared to normal weightwomen. Children born to obese mothers are at ahigher risk of becoming obese and developing type2 diabetes in future

The effect of obesity on reproductive health iscomplex. Obesity is associated with irregularity inperiods which is usually a result of anovulatorycycles. Obese women tend to be insulin resistantwhich in turn promotes the development of poly-cystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS. PCOS is a con-dition in which the ovaries become enlarged andhave multiple small collections of fluid. Increasedlevels of multiple hormones such as luteinizing hor-mone, leptin, insulin, estrone, triglycerides and verylow density lipo

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is acommon hormonal abnormality seen in womenof reproductive age group. Women with PCOSmay have enlarged ovaries that contain multi-ple small collections of fluid called follicles. Theyhave high levels of male hormones called andro-gens along with increased insulin resistance andare predisposed to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thesewomen usually present with irregular periods, increased hair growth, acne and infertility. PCOS leads to increased levels of obesity proteinsin turn have a negative impact on the hypopitu-itary gonadotrophic axis which in turn leads toinfertility.

Even after they conceive, obese women tend tohave a higher chance of miscarriage or abortion. The exact incidence of miscarriages among obesewomen remains unknown. This is compounded bythe fact that many times obese women tend to haveirregular menses and miscarriages may go unno-ticed. The other risks during pregnancy includehigh blood pressure, increased incidence of gesta-tional diabetes, pre-eclampsia, infection and bloodclotting (venous thrombo-embolism). Rates of still

born babies are also higher among obese women.Does the father’s weight affect a couple’s chances

of conceiving?Obesity has a negative impact on male fertility

as well. Some overweight and obese men may havea poorer sperm quality than normal weight men.Obese men may also have a higher incidence oferectile dysfunction and they tend to be less inter-ested in sex.

What are the possible solutions?Once other causes of infertility have been ruled

out, it is essential that overweight and obese wom-en attending infertility clinics be given necessaryadvice about weight loss. Lifestyle modificationforms the cornerstone of therapy and must be thefirst line of advice. Patients must be put on medi-cally supervised diet and exercise programs. Re-productive abnormalities induced by obesity tendto improve after weight loss. Period cycle tends tobecome more regularized and cycles become ovula-tory from anovulatory. Women suffering fromPCOD must see an endocrinologist to seek treat-ment for the same.

In case of severely obese women with a BMImore than 37.5 kg/m2, bariatric surgery can berecommended for weight loss.

Can you share any successful experience? One of my patients, Akansha Sharma, a 38 year

old lady had been married for ten years. At 134 kgshe was battling not only with weight issues butalso infertility. Multiple miscarriages and subse-quent multiple attempts at assisted reproductionthrough IVF had taken a toll on her physical andpsychological health. She also suffered from un-controlled diabetes and had recently been startedon medications for depression which in turn led tomore weight gain. After many failed attempts atweight loss she finally underwent a LaparoscopicRoux en Y gastric bypass in 2012. She lost 45 kg inone year and conceived naturally after 18 months.Today she is a proud mother to a beautiful babygirl. Bariatric surgery does wonders for morbidlyobese women suffering from infertility and thereare many such success stories of women who haveconceived after losing weight.

Preconception counselling must be mandatoryand one must target to achieve normal weight, before natural or assisted conception. You “must”lose those extra kilograms before you get onto thejourney of becoming a “yummy-mummy”.

England on the edgeEngland crashed back to earth after their

World Cup triumph as they were skittled for85 on a humiliating opening morning of theirfour-day test against Ireland at Lord’s on agreen top of a wicket. England failed to get thefirst use of the wicket. Tim Murtagh who rippedthrough the England order to claim an aston-ishing five for 13 in nine overs was the destroyerin chief.

It is the first time England have been bowledout before lunch at Lord’s on the opening morn-ing and their lowest test innings at home since1997 against Australia. Somehow, England sur-passed India’s score of 42 all out at Lord’s in1974.

Will mediation provide apermanent solution

on Kashmir?India’s traditional policy of handling all is-

sues with Pakistan “bilaterally”. What has itachieved in the past two decades? Let us thinkout of the box and see if there is another routeto solve the problems. You cannot carry on los-ing our armed forces personnel to terrorists ac-tions. Mr Trump has not learnt the bound-aries of what to say and what not to say inpublic. He is a man, who walked into the WhiteHouse from the Corporate Board Room wherehe was the owner of his business empire. Hehas not learnt the finer points of holding a po-litical office and utters words and sentenceswithout thinking or whetting with his coun-sels.

Many people like Trump, abroad, and evenwithin India must be of the opinion that al-though these two countries keep saying that itis a bilateral issue, they have been unable tosolve it bilaterally. So where is the harm in astrong, well meaning mutual friend coming tothe table and mediating between the two? Pa-

kistan had foolishly thought that it will be ableto arm-twist India through terror. It knows thatit has failed.

India under Vajpayee had thought that buseswill ply loads of goodwill between the two coun-tries and everything will gradually become nor-mal and pleasant. That too has failed. NarendraModi is on a trip of his own ever since the surgi-cal strikes. He thinks that by successfully seal-ing the borders to stop Pakistani terrorists fromcoming in, which Indian forces have almost com-pletely done successfully, and by crushing thelocal resistance by force, India will be able to wardoff any Pakistani stake in the region and com-pletely own the territory for itself and confusethe demography of the valley by pushing in scoresof rich Hindu families from other parts of thecountry over a period of time.

This ambition of Modi has met with resent-ment from the Kashmiris and threatens to snow-ball into a movement the kind of which was nev-er seen before – that of trying to free that landfrom the dominion of India. An indirect test ofthe mood is single digit percentage participationof the Muslims of the valley in any elections heldthere during the BJP presence at the Centre, inlast few years. Earlier on, even under terroristthreats, this participation used to be more than50%. Despite the boycott calls by the separat-ists, people did participate in the elections en-thusiastically.

So, what was a bilateral issue between Indiaand Pakistan, is now threatening to become, withPakistan effectively sealed off, a bilateral issuebetween India and India’s own population in theKashmir valley. This is likely to raise humanrights violations on a very large scale. And thisis what any person with humanity in his heartwill want to resist or protest against with all ofthat person’s might. Such persons can be foundin foreign lands or even within India. In the nameof goodness, Kashmiris should not suffer indig-nity or live under mortal fear as they are appar-

ently doing now. I personally see nothing wrongif Trump or other well meaning parties step into mediate. What is the meaning of “VasudhevKutumbkam” otherwise? When strong power-ful nations can’t talk on unresolved issues for70 years, perhaps mediation is necessary. Ismediation a permanent solution to end Kash-mir problem?

Ragging should stopRagging in universities and in colleges has

withstood bitter opposition but its prevalencecannot justify its continuance. Just in the nameof fun, senior students assault freshers physi-cally. Every year they come up with new meth-ods to harass the newcomers.

Raggers derive vicious pleasure out of thesuffering of others. The freshers have to servetheir seniors and have to dance to the tune oftheir tormentors. Is it not a sad beginning forthem?

Despite the fact that the colleges havebanned ragging which often results in unto-ward incidents including death, it has perpe-trated with impunity. In a sophisticated soci-ety, particularly in educational institutions, such acts tarnish their image. Ragging cannotbe justified by calling it just fun because anypleasure derived out of the other’s sufferings isthe devil’s pleasure.

Ragging was fun in the days of yore when itwas done innocently as a part of the introduc-tion between juniors and seniors. But raggingin today’s times of modern era which pushesstudents to commit suicide is murder and thoseindulging in such acts cannot be pardoned.

Schools, colleges and hostels are for studieswhere students make their careers and not forplay.

Dr Payal Tadvi’s death has shocked the cityof Mumbai which one believed was peaceful. Those responsible for her death should becharged with murder.

On the Vijay DiwasDay, we all rememberKargil war heroes. Ini-tially we were showingapathy on Kargil warheroes and totally for-gotten them. But forprint media’s wide cov-erage, no one is payingmuch importance to theservices rendered bythe Army at the crucialhour to kill our ene-mies and make themretreat. The yeomenservices rendered bythem should not be for-gotten even after 100years.

On the other handwe give undue impor-tance to the Indiancricket team. The hype, hoopla and hysteria can

be bestowed on theKargil team for theirbloodshed in a royalbattle. Let us remem-ber Kargil war heroes, who showed grit, fight-ing spirit, determina-tion and gumption tothe world that how afighting unit can makethings to happen in thebest way possible evenin adverse conditions. It is time recogniseKargil War Heroes.

on the Vijay Diwas dayof the historic war, which kept Pakistanpacking. Credit goes toArmy, Navy and the Airforce to mount an at-tack in a joint opera-tion. In the Tiger Hillattack in Jammu andKashmir ’s Drass-Kargil area, the airforce used the Mirage2000 aircraft and explo-sives were blown up ona ‘model hill’ to get up-per hand over our oldenemy and that is freshin our minds. In theKargil attack, one of theMirage 2000s show-cased the Spice bombcarrier. The bomb wasused in the Balakot airstrike in February.

Twenty years havegone by. On 26th July1999, Indian flag washoisted as Indian

army occupied KargilDrass sector on thesuccess of Mission Vi-jay. The victory wasnot an easy one, it wasmade up of sacrifice oflives of those 527 Indi-an soldiers who gavetheir lives for theirMotherland. It wasmade up of the tears ofa mother, who lost her

son; made up of thecries of a bride who wasnow a widow; made upof a child’s sadnesswho lost a father ’sshoulder to climb on,made up of a sister’sdead emotions who lostthe wrist she has al-ways tied rakhi on.Made up of the hardwork and sleepless

struggle of our braveand dedicated IndianArmy and their fami-lies.

On the occasion ofKargil Vijay Diwas(Victory at OperationVijay (1999), my saluteto the martyred onesduring this prestigiouswar. Always in remem-brance.
