welcomeWelcome to the 25th Award Winning Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People. 2014 has been a hugely successful year for Cinemagic and for all the thousands of young people who have participated in workshops, screenings, film making projects and outreach activities in Belfast, Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles.

In March we were delighted to welcome our patron Lord Julian Fellowes to Belfast to announce plans for the Cinemagic production of Northern Ireland’s first Christmas feature film for young people ‘A Christmas Star!’ The support for the project has been overwhelming from both the film industry and the general public with thousands of young people auditioning for the film’s lead cast and production crew. Filming will begin in the Autumn and we are looking forward to premiering the film in 2015. Cinemagic is a festival for young people, designed by young people. As you can see this is reflected in the 2014 programme which includes a very exciting line up of events including special premieres, international film previews, education screenings, ‘Talent Lab’ masterclasses and of course films made by young people.

Good luck to the ‘CineFocus’ juries who will have lots of fun judging the films in competition & well done to all the young directors who have submitted films to Young Filmmaker 2014. I would like to affirm the value of Cinemagic film screenings and masterclasses to Moving Image Arts (MIA) candidates across all three levels of the subject – at GCSE, AS and A2. The Cinemagic Festival gives students a unique opportunity to view a range of films on the big screen that are directly relevant to the specifications’ content and learning outcomes of MIA including strong illustrative examples of genre-specific, realist and expressionist films. In instances where a speaker or workshop is also included in the event, it can be of even more benefit, as time is taken after the screening itself to discuss and analyse film language with the student audience. This is relevant to the online examination unit. It is a testament to the value of Cinemagic that so many teachers bring their students to screenings each year.

Education Programme: Student ConductWe would like to remind you that class/school behaviour throughout the screenings and follow-on events is the teacher’s responsibility. The cinema has the right to ask the teacher to remove any disruptive student from the cinema.

YoUNG coNSUlTANTS 2014/15 YoUNG coNSUlTANTS 2014/15Continuing the success of the Cinemagic Young Consultants from previous years let us introduce you to the class of 2014.

“Hi we’re the Young Consultants and we all met up in August at Queen’s

Film Theatre and Odyssey Cinemas to help Cinemagic choose this year’s

festival films. We did everything from deciding on programme design,

came up with ideas for radio ads, wrote film reviews and most importantly

decided what films should be selected for the festival. The films we have

selected are all fantastic and we promise there is something for everyone.

From exclusive previews and family favourites, to films from all over the

world we hope Cinemagic 2014 provides you with as much enjoyment as we

had from being Young Consultants”.

The 2014 Young Consultants helped Cinemagic launch the ‘We Love Subs!’ campaign designed to promote and celebrate international youth films not in the English Language.

The benefits of young people watching international films is huge! We believe engaging in a programme of world cinema can increase learning and understanding of different cultures, helping to promote an environment of tolerance and acceptance.

Exposure to subtitled movies from a young age can also improve traditional literary skills as well as developing film literacy and a deep understanding of cinema that

will last long into adulthood!

THe cINemAGIc FeSTIVAl JUrYCinemagic is recruiting two film juries for our festival in November 2014.

cINeFocUSAll young people participating in the juries will watch feature films (films of at least 60 mins duration) before choosing their favourite. All films will be screened in their original language with English subtitles where necessary. The jurors will also take part in festival workshops, get the opportunity to meet international filmmakers, as well as making lots of new friends.

Where & When: The CineFocus programme will take place between Monday 17th & Friday 28th November. All screenings in each age category will take place in ourpartnervenues-OdysseyCinemas&Queen’sFilmTheatre.

Travel/Hospitality: Travel to the jury screenings is the responsibility of participants. Cinemagic can provide a list of B&Bs and hotels for those travelling from outside Belfast.

The Juror’s Pack: Each jury member will receive a Juror’s Pack consisting of a t-shirt, bag, programme, badge, jury sheets and pen.

Awards: Jury members will also be invited to present thebestfilmawardsatOdysseyCinemasonthefestival closing night on the 28th November. The CineFocus 12+ jury will present the Emerald Reel Award for Best Feature Film for a Youth Audience, the CineFocus 15+ jury will present the Silver Reel Award for Best Feature Film for a Teenage Audience and the CineFocus 18+ jury will present the Golden Reel Award for Best Film for a Young Adult Audience.

Cost: £10 per jury member

Availability: 50 participants will be chosen as jurors in each age category. Jury participation is based on a first come first served basis.

Starting as a DJ during his university years,PetejoinedCOOLFMaftergraduating and it wasn’t long before he was on the Breakfast show, combing his two passions of music and presenting. This role saw him at the helm of the most listened to commercial radio show in Northern Ireland for a number of years. In 2008 Pete won Media Personality of the Year at the FATE awards and in 2009 he was awarded Media Personality of the Year attheGOAwards.

Cinemagic patron Bronagh Waugh hails from Coleraine in Northern Ireland. In 2008 Bronagh landed the role of Cheryl Brady in Channel 4’s soap drama, Hollyoaks for which she was nominated for Best Newcomer, Best Actress and Best Comedy Performance at the British Soap Awards. After leaving the show Bronagh was cast as Sally-Ann Spector in BBC2’s hit drama The Fall which was filmed in Belfast and has just finished production on its second season. Bronagh recently joined the Citybeat team landing a regular slot on Saturday nights and is currently filming for Holby City.

Hubbard Casting has been at the forefront of Motion Picture Casting for over 30 years. Film credits include The Commitments, The Lord of the Rings, Bloody Sunday, United 93, The Damned United and The Hobbit. Dracula Untold is due to premier on the 1st OctoberwithIrishdirectorGaryShoreatthehelm.They are also awaiting the opening of Paul Feig’s Spy starring Melissa McCarthy and Miranda Hart and Sunset Song directed by Terence Davies, starring Agyness Deyn. They have recently completed casting on Tut - the story of Tutankhamun for American, Canadian and worldwide TV, starring Ben Kingsley. Amy Hubbard is an Emmy nominated casting director and is currently casting the latest series of 24 and Homeland, last year she won a BIFA for her work on The Selfish Giant. Dan Hubbard is currently working on Teen Reaper and has recently completed casting A Hundred Streets, staring Idris Elba and Gemma Arterteron, his series for ITV Chasing Shadows is

currently showing Thursdays at 9pm - he is awaiting the release of Jimmy: All is By My Side, a bio pic about the life of Jimi Hendrix starring André 3000. Ros has just finished working on A Hundred Streets as co-producers with Idris Elba, Pippa Cross and Leon Butler. Cinemagic Patrons Ros and John will share their knowledge and experience with a group of young aspiring actors. This is a unique opportunity for young actors to perform for two of the top casting professionals in the industry. Michael grew up in Northern Ireland and is a recent graduate of the National Film & Television School. He has directed a number of short films to date, a number of which have been screened worldwide and received award recognition. His most recent short Boogaloo and Graham was selected for the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Michael has worked extensively with Cinemagic over the last number of years and is currently back in Northern Ireland working on his first feature film Patch of Fog which is scheduled to begin filming this Autumn.

MichaelwillbejoinedbyLAbasedCameraOperatorandDirector of Photography Ian Fox for the workshop. Ian has worked on a number of major motion pictures during his career. Credits include: Dracula Untold, Saving Mr Banks, The Amazing Spider-Man, Apocalypto and Seabiscuit.

1st Assistant Director and Production Manager, Terry Bamber’s work in the UK Film industry spans four decades of filmmaking. Cinema has always been an integral part of Terry’s life. His career has taken him from Coronation Street, to Thunderbirds, to Carry on Columbus culminating in the James Bond series of films including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. As Assistant Director and Production Manager he has worked on a variety of films including101 Dalmatians, Tomb Raider and Phantom of the Opera. More recently Terry has been a Production Manager on World War Z as well as 1st Assistant Director on Bollywood’s biggest budget movie to date, Ra.One starring the world’s biggest Movie Star Shahrukh Khan. Terry has just finished work on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. which is due for release in 2015.

Gareth Ellis-Unwin is an Academy Award and BAFTA winning Producer andCEOofBedlamFilmProductions.AfterwinningaBAFTAnominationand both a Spirit and Dinard award for his first film Exam, Gareth went on to produce the critically acclaimed The King’s Speech. The record breaking film picked up the TIFF Audience award, 7 BAFTAs including bothOutstandingBritishFilmandBestFilmand4AcademyAwards,including Best Film. The film would go on to become the highest grossing British independent film of all time. Gareth immediately embarked on his next feature, Zaytoun, the moving story of an unlikely friendship between an Israeli fighter pilot and a Palestinian refugee. The film screened at the BFI London Film Festival, AFI Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Runner-Up Audience Award. As an Executive Producer, Gareth has recently completed Kajaki, a modern British War Film based on a true story, that is due to be released in November 2014 to coincide with Remembrance Day.

In 2010, former sales agent, Jessica Malik partnered with Jessica Parker to form Pari Passu Films. Her most recent credits as Producer or Executive Producer include Zaytoun, Ghosted and Estranged as well as having a number of films in development including FEST with the BFI and Women in Temptation with Bedlam Productions. In her previous guise, Jessica Malik handled international sales on many feature films including the box office smash The Woman in Black, multiple Academy Award winning Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, Paul McGuigan’s Lucky Number Slevin, Peter Howitt’s Sliding Doors, Matt Reeves US DVD chart topping Let Me In, multiple Academy Award nominee Peter Weir’s The Way Back and numerous other films with budgets ranging from $5m-$40m.

Maria Moore spent 15 years working in London’s West End as a wig mistress and makeup artist on shows including Cats, Evita, Chess, Copacabana and Mamma Mia. Maria returned home to Belfast 10 years ago and has continued to work regularly for the BBC. Maria’s film credits include Hunger, Dracula Untold and Shooting for Socrates. Television credits include Dani’s Castle, The Sparticle Mystery and The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby.

Maria was recently nominated for Belfast Telegraph’s Woman of the Year 2014 because of her passion and commitment to the industry and her continuous encouragement of aspiring makeup artists.

Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Paula Malcomson has had a diverse career across film, television and stage. She recently completed work on the final Hunger Games instalment playing Katniss’ mother, a role she played for all four of the Hunger Games films. She can also be seen in the indie film Grass Stains opposite Tye Sheridan, set to be released later this year. Her film work includes The Green Mile, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Tombstone, but she is perhaps best known for playing Trixie in the critically acclaimed television drama Deadwood. Her work in television has continued with the starring role in Caprica, and in standout roles in John from Cincinnati and Sons of Anarchy. When shooting ends on season two of Ray Donovan, she will be returning home to star in Woolly Faces, a period piece based on the Northern Irish hunger strikes, to be directed by Pearse Elliott.

Leon Mc Geown-Fee is a Northern Ireland based Production Manager who has worked on a wide and impressive range of productions. Production Manager credits include: Dani’s Castle series 1 & 3, Sesame Tree, The David Meade Project, The Greatest Knight, James May’s Head Squeeze and the Irish leg of Amazing Race for the US network CBS. Leon has also worked as 2nd Assistant Director on Blandings and The Furchester Hotel. Leon’s most high profile PM credit was on the production for global superstar Rihanna’s We Found Love video, shot on location in Belfast in 2012.

Special Effects is without a doubt a highly creative and fun area in make-up artistry. It allows you to create any creature you can imagine, as whacky or scary as your heart desires! It also serves a real purpose. With storylines becoming more sensational and technology more sophisticated, special effects is becoming an increasingly important element of both film and theatrical productions. Join special effects artist Triona Gogarty as she teaches participants the basic skills and techniques of make-up artistry!

Audiences love memorable characters. Likeable heroes and determined heroines, aliens with five legs and secretive next-door neighbours - it’s great characters who make films and TV programmes special. In this session, writer-director Charles Harris is going to look at how to create strong characters in your writing. You’re going to learn how to find characters that people will love and hate. We’re going to search out where you find them. We’re going to play with different ways to improve them. We’ll find ways of dealing with difficult characters, characters that nobody likes. And you’re going to learn how to put different characters together to create groups of characters who will virtually write their own scenes, by themselves. Come with paper and pens, and prepared to have fun.

The first part of this workshop is an interactive presentation that explains and shows a variety of storyboards used in traditional and digital stop motion animation, covering television series, commercials and feature films. This will be followed by a session on how to begin visualising a script and telling the story using the camera, characters and locations.

After you’ve taken this class, you’ll never need to be stuck for an idea again. Forget “writer’s block”. This workshop with award-winning writer-director Charles Harris is filled with ways to get you writing. You’ll learn the four “gears” of writing that you can use at any time. You’ll have fun with “free writing” where you simply don’t know what’s coming next. You’ll find out why “obstacles are a writer’s best friend.” We’ll play with all kinds of disasters and dilemmas. We’ll get our characters to play a “truth game” with us, and learn what really makes our writing work. After this, the problem won’t be getting yourself to start writing, it will be getting yourself to stop! Bring paper and pens.

The workshop will aim to explore the distinctiveness of crime fiction films produced in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland) for both TV and the cinema and attempt to understand why they have garnered so much interest in the UK, Ireland and North America. As the title implies, these are crime stories which are dark and grim in theme. Sometimes they are dark in the sense of the look of 1940s ‘Film Noir’ but at other times the contrast between the nature of the crimes and the beauty of the Scandinavian landscape is what makes them distinctive. We will also explore the influence ‘Nordic Noir’ has had on homegrown productions made in the UK/Ireland including series such as Broadchurch and The Fall. The Workshop will be followed by a screening of Episode 1 of Series 1 of The Bridge (Bron/Broen) with thanks to Arrow Films. The workshop will be led by freelance writer and lecturer Roy Stafford.

Beginners level – no prior knowledge required.

Who really banned A Clockwork Orange? Why did audiences live in fear of Snow White? Was The Dark Knight too dark for ‘12A’?! These questions and many others relating to the work of the British Board of Film Classification will be answered at a special presentation and interactive workshop event for Media and Film Studies students.

Paul is one of the most well-known and respected personalities in local broadcasting. He co-presents UTV Live, the most watched regional news programme in the UK, and he is the main presenter of UTV Live Tonight. Paul will host a workshop in News and Current Affairs Broadcasting offering an insight into how a news programme is designed and put together. He will also share his experiences working in the industry and give advice on how to forge out a career in the world of media.

David Arnold is an English film composer best known for scoring five James Bond films, Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla and the television series Little Britain and Sherlock. For Independence Day he received a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television and for Sherlock he, and co-composer Michael Price, won an Emmy for the ‘original dramatic score’ to His Last Vow, the final episode in the third series. Arnold is a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. David is currently working on the theatrical adaptation of the 2010 award winning film drama Made in Dagenham (Cert: 15).

This short film showcase was made as part of a workshop in Iraq. The project was supervised by award winning Iraqi film maker, Mohamed Al-Daradji and involved around twenty students. The aim of the scheme was to encourage the work of emerging film makers whilst working to re-establish and develop a sustainable film industry in Iraq. All the films are centred on youth and how young people deal with the consequences and aftermath of war & conflict!

Glórtha Aduaidh (Northern Voices) is a TV & Radio documentary series of previously unheard voices and stories about the conflict in the North of Ireland. War puts us into the most extreme situations, bringing out both our best and worst qualities. As well as being the ultimate “extension of politics,” warfare tests our morals, beliefs and individual psychology, subjecting them to the most intense pressure imaginable – often to the point of destruction. It follows that the War Film is a broad genre. Some seem to be historical documents, giving us believable reconstructions of events; others blast off into the realms of fantasy or black humour to make their satirical points. Some want to rally us behind the fight for a “just cause;” others see warfare of every kind as total stupidity.

Illustrated with powerful and entertaining clips, this seminar provides an overview of the themes and ideas behind the War Film. It shows how the genre can express love and hate, nobility and degradation, as it sets out the reasons why we fight each other. The workshop will be followed by a screening of The Book Thief (Cert: 12A)

Film critic, broadcaster and journalist Mark Kermode will return to Cinemagic to introduce and discuss A Matter of Life and Death, his 2014 festival pick! It’s never been easy to break into the TV and film industry - and yet now is possibly one of the best times there’s been. With new technology, producers need writers and film-makers more than ever. And today we can make movies on our own phones and computers. But how do you get yourself and your work noticed? This morning writer-director Charles Harris is going to look at what the industry wants and how you can provide it. You’ll learn the five things that you must tell a producer if you’re to get beyond the office door. We’ll look at the best way to approach film and TV companies. We’ll talk about where to find them and what to say to them when you get to meet. We’ll also discuss the important art of “pitching”. Bring notebooks and pens.

The first part of this workshop is an interactive presentation that explains and shows a variety of storyboards used in traditional and digital stop motion animation, covering television series, commercials and feature films. This will be followed by a session on how to begin visualising a script and telling the story using the camera, characters and locations.

Got an idea for a movie? This is the ultimate workshop in mobile moving making and gives you every film making tool you need at your fingertips to make your Hollywood blockbuster a reality. Using iPads and a host of creative apps you will storyboard, shoot, edit and showcase your movie all in one day!

This is a great practical opportunity for schools to critically debate an international short film programme before selecting a winner! Join schools from across Northern Ireland to see if your film tastes are similar or distinctly different! Before the screening the Cinemagic programming team will be sharing reviewing tips and guiding students in what to look out for when critiquing the shorts.

The workshop will aim to explore the distinctiveness of crime fiction films produced in the Nordic countries for both TV and the cinema and attempt to understand why they have garnered so much interest in the UK, Ireland and North America. We will also explore the influence ‘Nordic Noir’ has had on homegrown productions made in the UK/Ireland including series such as Broadchurch and The Fall. The Workshop will be followed by a screening of Episode 1 of Series 1 of The Bridge (Bron/Broen) with thanks to Arrow Films.

Beginners level – no prior knowledge required.

Who really banned A Clockwork Orange? Why did audiences live in fear of Snow White? Was The Dark Knight too dark for ‘12A’?! These questions and many others relating to the work of the British Board of Film Classification will be answered at a special presentation and interactive workshop event for Media and Film Studies students. Launched in 2007, film clubs have been running in Northern Ireland for the past seven years in Extended Schools, funded by the Department of Culture through Northern Ireland Screen and delivered by Cinemagic and the Nerve Centre. Now, due to additional funding from the BFI, one of Northern Ireland’s most popular and exciting after schools activities for students aged 5-19 years old is available to all schools in Northern Ireland.

As part of the upcoming Cinemagic Festival, Into Film Clubs are offering a number of FREE workshop and screening places for Into Film Clubs (details below).

Annually International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated onMarch8.Onthisdaythousandsofeventsareheldthroughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievement. However women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Globally, women’s education, health and violence against women is worse than that of men.

This year’s theme “Equality for women is progress for all” stresses the vital role of women as agents of change and one of the most effective ways to do this is to put women at the heart of the political process.

Cinemagic has partnered with the Northern Ireland Assembly and Belfast City Council’s Women’s Steering Group to ask young females to create short films that will inspire a new generation of young women to step up and become leaders in the most influential arena in theworld–thepoliticalarena!Overthecourseoffivedays, 16-25 year old females will create short films to highlight the benefits of young women in politics!

Cinemagic LA took place from 2nd - 10th March 2014. The Festival engaged with young people from both Northern Ireland and Los Angeles over an action packed week of practical film related activity! The programme includedindustrymasterclasses,Q&A’sandstudiotours.Young people got detailed insights into film, television and media from top professionals working with high profile organisations including The Jim Henson Company, HBO,WaltDisneyAnimationStudios,20thCenturyFox,The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, New York Film Academy, Aero Film and Creative Visions Foundation. The Festival concluded with a special closing night showcase recognising young filmmaking talent.

Gala Closing Night - Speakers included Northern Ireland First Minister the Rt. Hon. Peter D. Robinson MLA, deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MLA and musician Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol). The MC for the evening was the charismatic TV Host Ross King (GM:TV). Guests were treated to a number of spirited musical performances from a very talented group of young people from Northern Ireland as well as students from Alexander Hamilton High School, LA. The highlight of the evening was when this year’s young festival participants premiered their short film Punch, made at the 2013

Cinemagic International Film Camp. The film deals with a young girls struggle with domestic violence and her transformation from troubled teen to young adult through the sport of boxing; the film earned a well-deserved standing ovation. The evening came to a close with a Q&AfromentertainmentindustryprofessionalsincludingSound Mixer Peter Devlin (Thor, Iron Man 3), Camera OperatorIanFox(The Amazing Spiderman), Executive Producer Bernie Caulfield (Game of Thrones), Producer LanceOConnorandactressPaulaMalcomson(Hunger Games).

From 26th - 30th May 2014, Cinemagic New York brought young people from Belfast and New York together to engage in an action packed programme of film screenings, workshops, animation masterclasses, Q&As(includinganindustrypaneleventatHBO)andbehind the scenes tours, in schools and studios across the city.

OneofthehighlightsoftheweekwastheCinemagicAtlantic Animation Project, now in its second year, which allows young people to learn and share experiences in the field of moving image arts. Seven Special Schools from Belfast were part of this project which is a joint partnership between the Extended Schools Cluster Project (ESP) and Cinemagic. The schools involved were Cedar Lodge, Clarawood, Fleming Fulton, Mitchell House, Glenveagh, Harberton and Taughmonagh.

Young participants also enjoyed workshops & tours in the American Museum of Natural History, Sony Wonder Technology Lab and The Museum of Moving Image.

The Cinemagic Festival and Cinemagic Atlantic Animation Project will return to New York in 2015.

Cinemagic London took place from 30th June – 3rd July 2014. Young people, aged 4-25, took part in a fantastic series of film and television events with support from our funders Creative Skillset, Irish Youth Foundation, BFI, Barbican and Cineworld.

A host of award winning media, film and television industry representatives including TV and Radio PresenterDermotO’Leary(The X Factor), Film Producers Gareth Ellis-Unwin (The King’s Speech) and Jessica Malik (Ghosted), Director James Strong (Broadchurch), TV Presenter Alex Brooker (The Jump), Costume Designer Susannah Buxton (Burton & Taylor), Production Designer Donal Woods (Downton Abbey), TV Producer Mark Sidaway (The X Factor), and Hubbard Casting (Dracula Untold) presented ‘Talent Lab’ Masterclasses and shared their experiences with young people.

This is the seventh year Cinemagic has worked with Florence and the team in Castres and we can’t wait to see what fantastic events they have in store for us next year!

In March this year our patron Lord Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winningscreenwriterandcreatorofawardwinning ITV period drama, Downton Abbey, announced plans for the production of a Northern Ireland Christmas feature film, the first of its kind, made by Cinemagic Young Filmmakers. We are delighted to embark on this ground breaking project and to have the support of many film and television professionals who will mentor the young crew from script to screen and begin film production in Northern Ireland this autumn!

Cinemagic Young Filmmakers under the guidance of the industry professionals will be involved in all aspects of pre-production, filming and will leave the project with a wealth of skills, experience, industry insight and most importantly; their first credit on a feature film. Among those supporting, ‘A Christmas Star’ is actor andCinemagicpatron,LiamNeeson,Oscarwinningfilm producer, Gareth Ellis-Unwin, award winning film composer, Patrick Doyle, Music Supervisor, Maggie Rodford, casting directors and Cinemagic patrons, Ros and John Hubbard, camera operator, Ian Fox, producer, Iain Smith, make-up artist, Maria Moore, music composer, Mark Gordon, location manager, Stephen

Killen, production manager, Terry Bamber and director Richard Elson.

In June 2014 Cinemagic and Hubbard Casting held open castings in Ballymena, Belfast and Newry in a bid tofindtheyoungcast.Overthecourseof3daystheassessors auditioned thousands of young hopefuls from all over Ireland and the UK, all of whom were eager to get their big break! In the coming weeks, the young cast who will star in the film will be presented at the Cinemagic Under 12’s Closing Night Gala on Friday 17thOctoberandtheselectedYoungCrewof18-25year olds will begin an Intensive Production training programme mentored by Industry Professionals. The film will begin shooting on 15th November 2014.

In 2013 Cinemagic launched an industry masterclass series supported by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Cinemagic presented educational and industry based masterclasses, for 16-25 year olds, hosted by top professionals from the world of film. Industry hosts included cinematographer, John Schwartzman, (The Amazing Spider-Man, Armageddon, Dracula Untold, and Pearl Harbour), costume designer Caroline Mc Call (Wrath of the Titans, Robin Hood, Millions and Downton Abbey), makeup artist Clare Ramsey (Wrath of the Titans, 300: Rise of an Empire, Quantum of Solace and Game of Thrones) and computer animator Greg Maguire (Avatar). The masterclasses allowed aspiring students the opportunity to meet with high profile professionals and gain exclusive and honest insights into the filmmaking industry.

in 2014 as they support the Cinemagic Intensive Production Training Course which will take place in October2014.

In 2013, 18 talented filmmakers, aged 16-19, from Northern Ireland were selected to take part in the BFI Film Academy programme delivered by Cinemagic. The programme equipped young filmmakers, passionate about film, with the knowledge, skills, insight, confidence and practical training to help lay strong foundations for their pursuit of a career in the film industry. In addition to the industry and skills training the participants worked in groups to make 3 short films which they showcased at a VIP Showcase in March this year.

A number of invited guests from the film industry were on hand to talk to the young people about their aspiring careers. Industry professionals who shared their skills and experiences with the young people included producers Mark Huffam, Iain Smith, Terry Bamber, Gareth Ellis-Unwin, Jessica Malik, actress Suranne Jones, screenwriter Ryan Rowe, filmmakers Tony Mitchell, Terry Loane, Brian Henry Martin, Michael Lennox, Andrew Tohill and Ryan Tohill. The participants were also given insights to various areas of the film industry by representatives from Northern Ireland Screen,UniversityofUlster,Queen’sUniversityandproduction company Sixteen South.

InJune2014,FilmStudiesstudentsfromQueen’sUniversitywerechallengedto produce a “Happy” video for The Energy for Children Charitable Trust, the charity set up by Phoenix Natural Gas. Staff and beneficiaries of ‘Energy for Children’ funding donned their dancing shoes and created a fantastic 3 minute piece which will be used throughout the year to highlight the important work the charity delivers in the local community.
