Clubs ClassesMeet Friendship Circle Advisory Committee Member Binese Goldberg

Binese, the youngest of four children, was born into an Orthodox family in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her family owned an auto parts store and machine shop. As a young lady of only 10 years, she learned how to operate the machines—unheard of at the time. Occasionally she had to ask the customers to lift the parts onto the lathe she worked on!

Binese and Earl married in 1960, and she continued to work in the machine shop for several years. Although she did not particularly enjoy the job, she was faithful to the family business.

As their family—two sons and a daughter—grew, Binese became actively involved as a volunteer in the children's schools and in parent groups.

Binese found her niche as a piano technician, a field in which women were rarely seen. She was the first woman member and president of the Western Massachusetts chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild. She tuned pianos for many celebrities, including Liberace.

For 30 years she was involved in Tahara—the Jewish process of the final cleansing of the body for burial.

In 2010 Binese and Earl were encouraged by their sons, who live in Sebastopol, to move to Sonoma County from Springfield. They settled in Oakmont and connected with the Jewish community by joining Congregation Beth Ami and Friendship Circle (FC). Binese currently serves on the FC Advisory Committee and volunteers at most FC events. She is passionate about playing mah jongg and also enjoys traveling with FC, both day trips and multi-day sojourns. Binese looks forward to meeting you at our next Friendship Circle program.

Brunch at La Bodega & JCC Israeli Film FestivalTuesday, March 26, 10:45 AM

Join Friendship Circle for an Israeli-inspired BRUNCH followed by the finale film of the 4th Annual Sonoma County JCC Israeli Film Festival!

Meet at 10:45 AM for an all-inclusive brunch at La Bodega (2295 Gravenstein Hwy, Sebastopol). Brunch will include family-style fresh fruit, croissants, warm breakfast breads with jam & butter, platters of Mediterranean delights, Shakshuka (traditional Israeli egg & tomato breakfast dish), Bourekas (Israeli baked, stuffed pastry), and Belgian waffles, desserts, coffee & tea, tax and gratuity. (Alcoholic

beverages may be purchased no-host.) After our meal, we will meet at the Rialto Cinemas (6868 McKinley Street in Sebastopol) for the featured show, The Amazing Journey.

The Amazing Journey: For six years, chef Israel Aharoni and megastar Gidi Gov have been traveling the world for Israeli TV, learning about cultures through their food and the people who make it. Now, for the first time, they have come to explore the US. Our very own Doron Hovav, the JCC’s Film Festival Program Director, spent three months on their team as a producer—researching locations, people, and foods, then filming with the crew on a continuous road trip from coast to coast. You’ll be the first in America to watch an episode and hear behind the scenes stories, insights, and anecdotes about the making of this hit show. TV show, U.S./Israel, 80 minutes, Hebrew/English with English subtitles. Remember to bring your reading glasses!

Cost: If you are an Israeli Film Festival Season Pass holder, you may register for “Brunch Only” and bring your ticket with you. If you do not already have your ticket, you will need to register for the "Brunch & Theater Ticket,” and we will give you your theater ticket on the day of the event. RSVP by Wednesday March 13. Monet: The Late Yearsde Young Museum, San FranciscoWednesday, May 1Board our private bus and join us as we explore San Francisco’s world class de Young Museum. We will arrive early enough for you to visit the other exhibits before our 12:30 PM private docent-guided tour of Monet: The Late Years. You will also have time after our tour to continue to enjoy more of the museum. Reservations are limited—RSVP now so you don’t miss out!

About the Tour: The exhibition features 50 paintings by Claude Monet dating mainly from 1913 to 1926, the final phase of his long career, including 20 works from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris. During his late years, the well-traveled Monet stayed close to home, inspired by the variety of elements making up his own garden at Giverny, a village located 45 miles northwest of Paris. With its evolving scenery of flower beds, footpaths, willows, wisteria, and nymphaea, the garden became a personal laboratory for the artist’s sustained study of natural phenomena. Our private guide will take us through the exhibit featuring the series that Monet invented, and just as important, reinvented, in this setting.

Cost: FC Members $64; Guests $78 (includes round-trip private transportation to the de Young, admission into the museum, private docent-guided tour, trip escort, parking, tolls, and snacks along the way). FAMSF Members save $20. Please give Carol your FAMSF Member number at time of registration. No one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay.
