The institution’s faculty of more than 2,700 includes many distinguished members, including six Nobel Prize winners, 22 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 17 members of the National Academy of Medicine, 15 Howard Hughes investigators, and two Breakthrough Prize winners. UT Southwestern physicians provide medical care in about 80 specialties to more than 105,000 hospitalized patients and oversee approximately 2.4 million outpatient visits a year.

Philanthropic support from the Circle of Friends can be a gateway for early career faculty to secure external funding for their work like that of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Now more than ever, they need this catalytic start as the average age for first-time investigators receiving NIH funding has risen to 42 years old for Ph.D. holders and even higher for holders of M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees.
