Kiwanis Family Month can be celebrated year-round!

Greetings W-UM Circle K! My name is Justin Hahn and I am not only you Assistant District Administrator for Circle K, but I also serve as this year’s Kiwanis Family Chair for the WI-UM Kiwanis District. As you know, November was Kiwanis Family month and I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for all of your efforts in strengthening Kiwanis Family Relations in our District throughout the month of November. You hosted an amazing Kiwanis Family Service Day, which brought everyone together and worked to improve many lives. I was very impressed with the amount of work planning this event and the amount of service that was achieved as a result. Circle K also hosted Kiwanis Family Hockey Night, which brought members of the Kiwanis Family together for a night of bonding with the UW-Madison Hockey team while raising funds for the Eliminate Project. Kudos to you for all of your hard work and success!

Kiwanis Family month may be over, but there are still plenty of things we can do to bring us even closer than ever. Here are some ideas you can do to improve relations with your sponsoring Kiwanis clubs. Find out when your Kiwanis Club’s Anniversary is and send them a birthday card. Have you ever sent a thank you card to your sponsoring Kiwanis club for their support? What about sending an invitation asking them to join you for a meeting, service project, member induction, or officer installation? Another great opportunity to bond with your Kiwanis club is to have them participate in officer training, as well as invite them to run one of your club meetings and see if they would be interested in having you run one of their meetings. This is a great opportunity to learn the difference in how Kiwanis and Circle K do things.

April will be here before we know it and this year, Kiwanis One Day is April 5. This would be a great time to plan a joint service project with your local Kiwanis club. Start the planning efforts now so that there is plenty of time to put something together. Let’s work together and make a difference in our communities on April 5th. Also keep an eye out for a new Kiwanis Family event this year that Kiwanis will be hosting later this year. As Kiwanians, we are so proud of everything Circle K’ers accomplish and I know we will be even more in awe as the rest of this year progresses. If there is ever anything I can do for you as Kiwanis Family Chair, please let me know. I would be more than happy to help any way I can.

K-Family Service Day

A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated in this year’s Kiwanis Family Service Day! 78 Circle-K members and Kiwanian’s came together to volunteer and fundraise in the Milwaukee community. Projects included the Milwaukee river cleanup, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, requesting donations for homeless shelters at Walgreens and CVS stores, a Bradford beach cleanup, and more. We were able to donate a few hundred items to LEAVEN, which is a Christian-based charity organization that helps distribute goods to people in need. And Between the Bradford beach cleanup and the Milwaukee river cleanup we collected about 15 large garbage bags of trash. I am grateful for those of you who participated in making this a fairly successful event! I am sure those who attended were positively influencing the Milwaukee community. And hopefully, you all had fun!

K-Family Hockey Night

On Friday, December 6, 213 Kiwanis Family members enjoyed a fun night of Badgers hockey to support the ELIMINATE Project.

The K-Family members watched the Wisconsin Badgers take on the Penn State Nittany Lions up close to the ice. 16 of our 22 Wisconsin-Upper Michigan’s Circle K clubs were in attendance to watch the Badgers beat up the Penn State. We also had three Key Clubs and nine Kiwanis Clubs representing the K-Family at the game.

From hitting a sombrero with a hockey puck to other competitions throughout the game, K-Family members laughed and enjoyed the fun family atmosphere. We cheered along with all of the Badger fans, even though there were some Penn State fans in our K-Family. The Badgers defeated Penn State 6-1 all the while raising $1,491 for the ELIMINATE Project.

Many members enjoyed the change of venue for the hockey game. W-UM made a strong showing at the game and raised a great amount of money for the ELIMINATE Project.

Thanks to all the members for attending the game and making the K-Family Hockey Night a great Kiwanis Family event with some great bonding with other Kiwanis Family members. Make sure not to miss this hot event on the ice next year!

Have you been ELIMINATE-ing MNT?

26: is the number of countries that still need to eliminate maternal neonatal tetanus (MNT). Circle K International has raised $171,947.80. The Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K district has raised $8,426.38. Let’s keep going until 2015 to knock out this horrible disease. Below are some ideas to raise those funds! Do you need gift ideas for the holidays? This year the Eliminate Project is doing a holiday gift giving. You can donate to the Eliminate Project and have the money sent in honor of a special someone. They will receive a postcard in the mail stating how many lives were saved in their honor.

There are so many things you can do to help raise money and awareness to save a mother and her baby. The holiday season is approaching quickly and these may not be able to be done now, but something to think about for next year is creating holiday crafts and selling them at a local craft fair for ELIMINATE.

Other ideas include hosting a gift wrapping event and taking donations to go towards the Eliminate Project; maybe a holiday auction of holiday materials and crafts to auction off at maybe a community or campus event. Going Christmas caroling and collecting donations – this is something that UW-Madison does! Having various sales on campus such as a bake sale, puppy chow sale, hot chocolate and other ideas you can think of. Some campuses do not allow liquids to be sold, so if you do the hot chocolate make sure it is okay!

After Christmas break comes February, which is one of ELIMINATE’s biggest events “Show your love, Save a life.” The idea is to pair a love-based holiday with saving a life. You may want to start planning for this now. Some ideas for this include an “Elimadate” speed dating fundraiser to connect students with others on campus have the participants pay an admission fee to go towards the Eliminate Project. Want to take it a step further? Host a bachelor or bachelorette auction!

Dance to Eliminate is another popular event. Host a dance for Valentine’s Day, making the admission costs go towards this project. Hold a Valentine’s Day dinner for others on campus to attend on Valentine’s Day. Some simple projects that you can do include: selling Valentine’s Day cards, selling origami foam roses in blue, or selling flowers or candy grams to members. All of these ideas were from the Eliminate Project website that has a step-by-step guide for each project so you know where to begin and how to be successful.

On Thursday, December 5, UW Circle K members caroled their hearts out. Kiwanis Family members from Edgewood College Circle K, Middleton High School Key Club and Madison Memorial Key Club joined us. For caroling, we divided into four groups to reach as many houses as we could to ask for donations and spread word about the ELIMINATE Project. Despite the cold Wisconsin weather, the event was a blast. K-Family members bonded and new connections were made. We raised $556.84 for the ELIMINATE Project.

Being Circle K’ers we know that service doesn’t stop. We work through sleep, rain, heat, and yes, even the cold, to serve our communities and to make a difference. This winter, while you’re cozy inside with your hot cocoa and footie pajamas, whether you’re celebrating Christmas or just immersing yourself in the holiday season, you should be thinking about giving back and making some changes in your neighborhoods. Need some ideas to kick-start your winter service project planning? Look below for different categories and projects that you can complete over your winter break or during your free time.

Service in the Snow- Outside Projects

• Shovel or snow-blow sidewalks and driveways for the elderly or for families. • Host a snowman-building contest for children in your neighborhood at a local park or in front yards. Get a group of

your friends to judge and give out prizes for different things (ex. Most Original, Best Frosty-look-a-like, Smallest, Largest, etc.). This will give kids a chance to be active and allow their parents to run errands or relax!

• Ring bells for The Salvation Army. • Host a “get up, get active” campaign in your community. Set aside an hour or two for outdoor activities (sledding,

snow fort-making, snowball fights, etc.). • Offer to put up outdoor holiday decorations or lights for neighbors.

• Go caroling around different neighborhoods to bring in some holiday cheer.

The “Warm Fuzzies”- Projects for Kids

• Collect toys and donate them to Toys 4 Tots. • Write holiday cards for children at the Boys & Girls Club, Children’s Hospital, or local schools. • Participate in “Adopt-A-Family” and make their holidays bright. • Trim a mitten Christmas tree to donate mittens to local schools. • Host a children’s holiday movie viewing party at your house or school. Have a crafting station for paper-plate

snowmen, holiday cards, and paper ornaments. • Tutor kids after school or participate in an before/after-school program. • If you know someone who looks like/has Santa-like qualities, ask if they will dress up and personally deliver gifts to

boys and girls around your neighborhood. • Contact local schools to set up a Yell-And-Tell program (www.yellandtell.com).

Candy Cane Cats & Holiday Hounds- Projects for A nimals

• Make toys for your local humane society or shelter. • Offer to walk dogs or socialize with pets that have been abused. It’s fun and the animals benefit! • Host a collection for extra pet beds, food, toys, and other goods. • Like to take photos? Organize a holiday pet photo-shoot for neighbors. Do it by donation or for a small fee &

donate the money or buy pet supplies to donate to a shelter.

Home for the Holidays- Projects for Homelessness

• Organize a coat/winter attire drive (or just clean out your closet) and donate the clothing to a local shelter. • Serve a meal or two at a soup kitchen. • Volunteer to clean or organize at a local shelter. • Make “I Care” packages with toiletries and a positive note. Donate them to a shelter. • Host a holiday or birthday party at a shelter for women & children. Ask members of the community to donate gifts,

to make bakes goods, or to provide decorations.

• Head to a senior center or other housing community & participate in putting on holiday-themed art projects, work their bingo night, or sing carols.

• Create & send care packages to soldiers. There are websites, such as Soldier's Angels and Any Soldier that provide an enormous amount of information about sending care packages to soldiers overseas. You can choose to adopt a soldier and gather things to send.

• Bake cookies or other goods for firefighters, police officers, or even your security guards on campus. Accompany the treats with a holiday card. These types of jobs often leave our local servicemen and women away from their families during the holidays.

• Donate your old cell phone to Cell Phones for Soldiers. • Contact Habitat for Humanity to see what projects they have available. • Practice “Random Acts of Kindness” (opening doors, leaving positive notes around campus, smiling/thanking

people, paying for a random person’s meal, etc.). • Offer to wrap presents for parents & children in your neighborhood. • Make scarves for distribution to children, shelters, or other people around your neighborhood or school. • Create holiday baskets with cookies/baked goods, a card, a mug/hot cocoa mix, or more and donate them to those

who need some holiday cheer. • Decorate socks with puffy paint and donate them to elderly homes

International Update from  

Hello W-UM! To start with a quick introduction of who I am, my name is Jonathan Pevarnek and I am currently serving as the international Trustee from Subregion C. What does this mean? This means that I have the absolute honor of representing all of you, the members of the best subregion ever, on the Circle K international board. In addition to W-UM, I also represent Minnesota-Dakotas (MinnDak), Illinois-Eastern Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan. Anyways, enough about what I do, there are a couple things going on in Circle K International that I’d like to talk about. First of all, there is an awesome event called Holiday Embrace (and Winter Escape) coming up next month in the Illinois-Eastern Iowa district. Holiday Embrace is a semi-formal dinner-dance where you get the chance to enjoy a great meal, show off your dance moves, and meet a ton of other Circle K’ers from all over (people have traveled from as far as the east coast for the event in past years!). Personally though, I really enjoy having the chance to do fun service projects with Circle K’ers I meet, and have a chance to get to know them for more than just a couple hours; that’s where Winter Escape comes in. Starting the Friday before the dance, Winter Escape is a Subregion-C-wide event where you’ll have the chance to get to know members of other Circle K clubs through some exciting icebreakers, see people make fools of themselves show off their amazing talents in the Mr./Mrs. Subregion C talent pageants, and get the chance to do some really cool service projects. If you are interested in either of these events, more information on both of them can be found at http://us.ootoweb.com/2014ckihe. Oh, also, the event is Harry Potter themed, so make sure you bring your best dress robes and be prepared for an amazing time! Now, after you go to Holiday Escape (I can combine the names like that, right?), you’re probably going to want to see all the awesome people you met as soon as possible. Fortunately, it will almost be DCON season at that point. Just like WUM has a convention, so does every other district in the convention. I would really encourage you to try to visit conventions in other districts, from doing it last year (at WUMCON! (I’ve abbreviated the name of your convention by the way)), I can attest that it is a lot of fun. Some of the dates we know now are I-I on the weekend of February 22nd, Indiana on the weekend of the 29th, and Michigan (probably) on the weekend of March 29th. If you are interested in attending any of these, please let me know (or members of that district) and I will do whatever I can to help you! Finally, just a quick update on what the international board has been working on, a lot of the work as of late has been focused upon procedural items. As of late, the international board has done a lot of work updating the language for interclubs in the policy code, making satellite club documents easier to work with, and updating the standard form for club bylaws. As far as committees go, I’ve been doing a lot of work with the executive committee on preparing documents for the next Governors’ and Administrators’ Training Conference. I have also been working with the SPICE committee on making some great resources, you should start seeing these come out in the near future. Step 1: Set your goals high. Go for the gold this year by pre-registering for District Convention by January 31st, 2014.

Step 2: Keep up the cardio. Keep moving and making a difference in the world or your local community. Year after year WUM CKI changes the lives of thousands of people. So whether you helping out at your local soup kitchen once a week or planning a one-time event to support a cause, keep moving those buff volunteering muscles of yours.

Step 4: Eat, sleep and breathe DCON. Don’t just think about it…live it. Adjust your mindset, your diet and your daily routine. Use cheesy sports quotes whenever you can in conversation. Only eat red, black, blue, green and yellow foods (because if it’s good enough for the Olympic rings, it’s good enough for you). Limit your TV intake to watching the Olympic trials for curling and of course the actual Olympic games.

Step 6: Celebrate. DCON falls near the end of another fabulous Circle K year and since you belong to the most prestigious district in all of Circle K International, you have plenty to celebrate. So get to DCON.

Step 5: Win. Make sure that all of your legendary service projects and time spent changing the world doesn’t go unrecognized! Apply for awards by January 27th, 2014 to earn the praise you deserve!

Step 3: Practice. Potentially the most crucial step. Prepare for all of the fun that will be had at DCON by brushing up on your dancing skills and holding club practices to build your Circle K spirit.

2013-2014 Executive Board

Sam Liebl (President) Her favorite service project so far has been serving with PetsMart and helping dogs go to good families. She enjoys seeing all the smiling faces and playing with the dogs. She also loves the snow and can’t wait for Winter Weekend Getaway!

Helene Palau-Tejeda (Vice President) She hopes to recruit at least 50 people by next year. Her favorite service project so far has been serving Thanksgiving meals at the River Food Pantry and at Bethel Lutheran Church.

Danielle Castleberg (Secretary) In the future, she would like to see the club full of members and to have tons of volunteer opportunities. So far, her favorite service project has been volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Gustavo Velazquez (Treasurer) He wants the club to be recognized regionally and be one of the biggest clubs at Madison College! So far, his favorite service project has been serving food at the River Food Pantry.

W-UM’s newest chartered club is excited to serve and attend district events

On December 2, 2013 Circle K was officially recognized by Madison College! They are the first and only Circle K club to be established in a technical college in the Capital Division. While other clubs have most of their members on campus, the students that attend MATC have a variety of schedules. Some work fulltime while others study fulltime; some are here for an associate’s degree while others are transferring elsewhere. The difference among MATC students is the reason why starting a club here has been such a journey and why finally being recognized has felt so rewarding to the members. MATC board members plan to grow this club into something wonderful for all of the MATC students to enjoy and participate in. They have several service projects lined up and cannot wait to meet everyone at Winter Weekend Getaway! Volunteering hasn’t been more fun for their members. While their club is new, it also happens to be run by some of the busiest people. However, they have been more than happy to join in after learning about Circle K.

Their goal is to continue growing the club and spreading the word about all the great things that are possible with Circle K. They hope to gather as many people to join in on Winter Weekend Getaway and introduce them to the wonderful world of Circle K and the members that make up the district!

Hello W-UM Circle K! It seems like just yesterday that we were started up the school year and here we are, at the end of another calendar year! With 2014 rapidly approaching, so is the District Awards Applications due date. Here are some tips to keep in mind for when your club starts working on the applications:

1. Fill out the award completely and correctly

-­‐ Make sure you are answering the question being asked -­‐ What supplemental materials do you need to include? Some applications require an essay, an example

of minutes, etc. Make sure to double-check that you’ve included these in your application -­‐ Don’t forget to get the proper signatures!

2. Divide up the workload

-­‐ Presidents, ask your e-board to help! E-board members, offer to write applications -­‐ Delegate the applications to members who have knowledge about specific areas. For example, have

your Fundraising Chairs apply for Outstanding Fundraiser.

3. Know your deadlines

-­‐ All awards must be postmarked by Monday, January 27! -­‐ Some clubs choose to set a personal deadline to have all of the applications completed; that way, they

can double-check one another’s work and make sure that everything was completed to the best of their knowledge

-­‐ While it’s not required, some clubs decide to send all of their applications in together; make sure everyone knows when they are due back to the designated individual

4. Unsure if you should apply for an award? DO IT!

-­‐ Your club has worked hard and deserves the recognition. If you’re proud of your accomplishments, others should be able to see that too!
