Words from the Pastor…
October 2014
Circuit
Writer Monthly Newsletter of
The Erlanger United
Methodist Chruch
We’re in a time of year when a lot of holidays seem to run together in one mad dash to
a cash register. Sometimes it all seems so meaningless and crazy. A lot of people say
their favorite holiday is Christmas. I had a good
friend who said his favorite holiday was
Thanksgiving – all the good things about
Christmas without all the commercialism. I
agreed with him for a long time. I have always
gotten sad when I hear deeply committed
Christian people say their favorite holiday is
Halloween. It seems a very depressing
commentary on faith. Sometimes I think my
favorite holiday is the “fall back” Saturday. It’s
about as spiritually rewarding as any of them
these days – at least the way we celebrate them
all with the mad dash to the cash register.
I hope this year we can all take a deep breath and
remember what each holiday is all about – even
Halloween. Fun days should be fun. A day with
an extra hour should be celebrated!! Days of
thanksgiving should be full of thanks.
Christmas should be full of Christ. Everything
has its place and purpose.
We make choices all the time about the priority
our lives will have, and the priority each
occasion and each moment will have. Making
good choices in each day (and with each
occasion) will mean that our lives take on a
completely new perspective and a whole new
meaning. (Continued on next page)
I met Jesus early in the morning before the birds began to sing:
And oh, it was so pleasant, to talk to my King.
He is the dearest friend I have; on others I cannot depend.
Why would you turn from Him, when He is such a good friend?
Accept Him, and He Will Always be near.
My Friend by Helen Lancaster
Trying to cram too much into a day is a bad choice. Trying to make something into something
it’s not is a bad choice. Keeping focus is a good thing. Keeping God first is the best thing.
It does seem to be a whirlwind of holidays. Some of them are silly and fun, some of them are
life-changing. There are people who get those two mixed up, and it’s easy to get caught up in
the whirlwind. Let’s try real hard to not let that happen. Christmas gets to be a whirlwind of
commercialism and office parties. Thanksgiving is getting to be a whirlwind of shopping and
bargains. Halloween is a whirlwind of candy and costumes. All of them have their place. All
of them serve a purpose. Certainly life can be a whirlwind of chaos and activity and racing to
do the most things the fastest. But it doesn’t have to be.
Keep them all in perspective. Keep life in balance. And keep a faith-filled outlook on
everything. The whirlwind can be stopped through our choices. The futility we often feel can
be resolved by keeping the right focus on each event. And it really will enrich each moment of
our living.
God’s Word reminds us to make good choices in many places and with many things. Joshua
challenged the Israelites to put away all the false idols and senseless activity. “Choose this day
whom you will serve,” he said. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Jesus
reminded us, too, that if we would choose to be his disciples, we must take up our cross and
follow him. Psalms reminds us to “enter his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with
praise.”
Each day is full of choices. Each moment is an opportunity to make a good choice. I hope we
all choose to not make the cash register the main focus. Let’s make God the focus of each
moment, and good choices every day. It’s the best way to make the most of these holidays.
See you in church!

Prayer Corner With Pat barbour
The old song is right--"What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer."
Little children do not find it difficult at all to accept this concept at once, for they
never doubt that God understands and has things under control.
A little girl was kneeling by her bedside saying her nightly prayers. Her mother passed
along the hallway and looked in. She heard the little girl
saying,
"ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ." When she had finished, the
mother said, "Darling, why did you do that?"
The little girl answered, "Well, there were so many things I wanted to say to God I just
couldn't say them all, so I thought I'd just say the alphabet and God would put the words
together.
Perfect. That's it!
Even though our words may not be very important when we are talking with God, they
are most important when we are talking with other humans about him.
