What is the story behind your label’s name Hilda.Henri?

I love stories to things. And of course there is a story to Hilda.Henri: My grandmother, to whom I had a close bond, was born in Vienna and her first name was Hilda. The name Henri I just love very much and if I had a son instead of a daugh-ter I would have called him Henri.

Why did you choose milled loden for your collection?

I know milled loden since I was a child. Already in kindergarten my mother put my sister and myself always in milled loden jackets. I remem-ber my red milled loden „janker“ very well: it was edged dark blue and had little silver metal but-tons. I loved to wear it together with my green kilt. My mother used to combine the traditional material with fashionable parts. Many years later, as a student at the Fashion school ESMOD, I rediscovered this particular natural material again during my internship at an Austrian dress maker in Salzburg. Since then, milled loden has been my favorite fabric. After the birth of my daughter I was sure: Children‘s fashion from Walk, that`s what I want to make! And I wanted to do it my way: authentic, especially high quality and timel-ess. My garments should be able to be passed through the family and live long.

What is so special about this fabric?

Walk is a natural wool product without any chemical additives and with temperature regu-lating and breathable effect. It is ideal for use in children‘s fashion. Wollwalk from pure new wool or merino wool is soft, lightweight, hardwearing, water resistant and durable. It adapts to fit the body shape of the child. The precious lanolin obtains with the after manufacturing process.

In addition, the walking process is a traditional, eco-friendly and environmentally conscious manufacturing, which satisfy my own eco-social aspiration.

What ist the structure of your collection?

The centerpieces of my collections are quality made coats, jackets and capes from Walkloden, for girls and boys. These are complemented with skirts, dresses, pants, and knitwear. I offer my garments in double sizes so that they accompa-ny the children several seasons and may become favourite pieces. Size 2 years (86/92) up to size 16 years (170/176). With each collection there are new accessories such as hats, headbands and scarves. Since 2014, selected parts are also available in women‘s sizes. Mother & child in matching outfits!

Where do you get your design inspiration from?

For my collections I always work with history and stories. For spring/ summer 2015 the sto-ry is called „Medows dance“. It takes us on a long expedition into the world of fantasy, with little miracles and great adventures on the way through this fairy tale.

On what can we look forward to in the new spring/ summer collection 2015?

This summer we present an exciting new discove-ry: hand printing. This process was in alpine areas once very popular for finishing „Dirndl“ costume and fabrics. For the wide flowing dresses and sum-mer coats the prints and sophisticated cuts provide a fine vintage look. The lightness of summer is re-flected in the choice of materials: for the first time particularly lighter and softer Walk (100% merino wool) and organic linen (GOTS-certified) is used. Aqua, light gray, chalk and mustard, are the colors of summer 2015 by Hilda.Henri.

Interview with Verena Wondrak, founder and designer of the kidswear label Hilda.Henri from Vienna, Austria.

Q&A

Page 28: Circus Magazine 4*2014

28 circus magazine

Interview mit Verena Wondrak, Gründerin und Designerin des Wiener Kindermode Labels Hilda.Henri.

Was steht hinter dem Namen Hilda.Henri?

Walk begleitet mich schon seit meiner Kindheit.

Verena Wondrak,

Designer with a Sustainable ClaimAfter graduating from the premier design uni-versity ESMOD in Munich I gathered experience in the fashion business. Following professional positions as a fashion designer for a string of well-known brands, and working as a central buyer and manager in the retail trade, the next step to creating my own collection was almost predestined. With a grant from departure (the Creative Agency of the City of Vienna), I foun-ded Hilda.Henri, a premium milled loden and knitwear collection with an emphasis on sustai-nability at the beginning of 2013.

Page 29: Circus Magazine 4*2014

circus magazine 29

Henri.

It is an easy and beautiful gift. Make the neckless colourful and as long or short as you like. You can also use a nylon string. We used special beed strings with a „needle“ fixed to the string. That made it easier threading the beads. If you don‘t want to make the tassels yourself you can buy them ready made and just fix them to the neckless. Enjoy!

Mural painting is one of the oldest traditional cultural achievements. For Berlin artists couple, Inca Gierden and

Collieux Julien (Julien comes from Marseille, and they have three children) it means to transform the atmosphere of a room and reflect the personal style of the resident. Inspired by traditional wall design techniques, the artists like to play with color, shapes and shades. The color tone is prioritised and is complemented by painted designs, ornaments and patterns. hey are used most of all pigments according to old recipes. In their studio in Berlin-Kreuzberg, in the third inner courtyard of an oldstyle house, is especially magical and enchanting. Here they make little pictures for the wall, for beginners, so to speak - fishes on a gold background, small dwarves and girls watching over the child as it sleeps, when the picture is hung above their bed.“We glaze the colours in several layers which lends depth”, the artist explains, „and we mainly use pigments based on old formulae“. It is

astonishing - even comparatively small walls look so much larger and more attractive. “I like working on old walls”, says Inga Gierden. That is because old walls have tales to tell.“ Most of the paints originate in France, because painting walls enjoys a longer and, in particular, more firmly -established tradition there. “I would like to see more use of colours in Germany”, says Inga Gierden. “In Britain and France, for example, people have never liked a white wall - there, artists have always worked with ochres. We mainly use pigments based on old formulae. Inka and Julien mix their customers’ dream colours from bright yellow to vivid red, from jars and plastic containers with casein colours and natural pigments in green, grey, brown and blue tones. The prices for the transformation depend on the condition of the rooms and the walls. A wall in an old building (five times three-and-a half metres), costs around 1,300 euros. It‘s timeless beauty, combined with old craftsmanship!www.wand-lungen.de

„Poor but sexy“ - that was the ultimate slogan for Berlin, quoted by former mayor Klaus Wowereit. But Berlin is growing up and things have changes a lot since then. Still there are places in Berlin that are „poor and sexy“ but many former wastelands have developed into trendy Gallery areas with chic shopping malls and cool hotels and restaurants. Berlin may not be the most glamorous of metro-politan cities around the world but it tells stories about East and West history at every corner. This unique atmosphere still attracts creative individu-als and art lovers from all over the world, not only to visit but also to live and work in this city. They come togehter and collectively fashioning Berlin.

Berlin may be widely celebrated as a party and night city with great food, cool clubs and music places but there are many historical places a must to be seen, like the Berlin

Wall Memorial. Here we lined up some of the best must seen in Berlin.

l Reichstag Visit 1990s glass dome on top of the 1890s Reichstag or the iconic Berliner Fern-sehturm (TV Tower) for an aerial view. Look down to see Micha Ullman‘s memorial to the 1933 book burning at Bebelplatz; visitors peer down through a window in the middle of the square to find a library lined with empty shelves. l Museums The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation runs 18 great museums, like the Nationalgalerie designed by Mies van der Rohe, the Hamburger Bahnhof (a contemporary art museum housed in an 1870s train station). Set aside a day for Museumsinsel, an island of five museums on the Spree. l C/O Berlin Foundation at Amerika Haus in Charlotten-burg is a pri-vate founda-tion. Through crowdfunding it was possible to finance the reconstrution of the „Amerika Haus“. As an ex-hibition center for photography, C/O Berlin presents the work of re-nowned artists, organi-zes events, promotes ta-lented young artists, and accompanies children on voyages of discovery through our visual cul-ture.l Berlin Wall Memorial, it is the central memorial site of German division, located in the middle of the capital. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it extends along 1.4 kilometers of the for-mer border strip.

l Topography of Terror Documentation Cen-ter, More than one million people visited the “Topography of Terror” in 2013, making the do-cumentation center one of the most frequently visited places of remembrance in Berlin. During the “Third Reich” the headquarters of the Secret State Police, the SS and the Reich Security Main Office were located at the site, Niederkirchner-straße 8. l Berlin City Tours. Another great way to ex-plore the city is a guided tour. For the begin-ning it is great - like in many other cityts world wide - to take a tour with one of the sight seeing bus. You can also book a Berlin Art Tour (art-berlin-online.de). Book a tour highlighting Bau-haus and Modernist architecture, or check out Berlin‘s green design scene.l Sightseeing per boat, Reederei Spreetours: See the city by boat as you travel along the Spree.

l Stolper-steine. In a city filled with monu-ments and m e m o r i -als, two of the most t h o u g h t -

ful and beautifully designed memorials are in the ground: Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) are cobblestone-sized brass plaques listing the

name, dates of birth, depor-tation and death of victims of the Nazi regime. They are ins-talled in front of the buildings where the victim resided.
