ReportHOXIE BROS. CIRCUS

BY PAUL HORSMAN

Just caught Hox ie Bros. Circus here in Au-burn (NY) . They moved across New Yorkstate with long jumps after having played itmore thoroughly in June. The big top hasbeen completely repaired, by a crew thatwas sent ahead, yet New York state wouldnot let them put up the repaired to, so theysidewalled it.

Weather was very good here and both per-formances drew good crowds, both beingclose to full houses.

Performance is good and the band is out-standing. Band includes leader Charles Mo-yer, trumpet, two other trumpet players,a trombone and drummer. When possibleGary Holveck doubled in brass on the tu-ba. Leader Charles Moyer also doubled inbrass at one point by playing both thetrumpet and drums at the same time.

Despite the long jump, the show got in andup on time, after coming from Johnstown.Performances were at 6 and 8 p.m.

PEOPLEBRUCE ANDERSON, high act, will be ap-pearing at the California State Fair in Sacra-mento, Calif., Aug. 28-Sept. 7th.

FORREST JARVIS, for many years on thestage with his own magic show, and later onthe Kirkwood Penn Premier and JoylandShows, would appreciate hearing from oldfriends. Write him at: Aivert Nursing Home,953 Airport Road, Ceredo, W. Va. 25507.

There were many visitors on the lot here, including James M. Cole, Roger and JuneMoore, independent Shrine Circus promo-ten from Dallas, Al Stopyra, Charles See-ly, Frank Howard, Dick Thompson, DonNinestine, Harry Clarke, Don and BarbaraKowell, Pat DiPonzio and daughter Laurieand Richard Flint.

The show will be using the repaired tentupon entering Ohio and for the rest of theseason.

curtain the audience was greeted by Crissythe clown. Suddenly musicians Neil Arm-strong and Jim Miller began a rousing over-ture which definitely prepared the crowdfor a fantastic performance yet to come.

Announcer Al Leonard greeted the audi-ence and was met with a thunderous ap-plause. The show began with the sensation-al Weller Family (rola bola and balancing)featuring two adorable moppetts - Shannonand Kelly. Comedy took the audience bystorm with the appearance of Giovanni'sComedy Plate Spinning. The Clown Capadesthen brought tears of laughter to the eyesof the audience with their marvelous pre-sentation of the sidewalk elevator.

Next came what had to be considered thehighlight of the show. Suddenly the auditor-ium was cloaked in total darkness as the an-nouncer introduced Dorian Blake. At oncered and blue lights began to flash in the dark-ness and Dorian Blake appeared in a midstof an explosion of flame on center stage. Hethen began a series of rapid and unbelievableproductions of assistants and then a bafflingseries of dove appearances and vanishes.

The audience was then treated to a briefintermission. The second half opened with the heart war-

ming and loveable presentation of Chris Al-berti's poodles. Then it was back to the com-edy theme with a classical presentation by theGreat Stradivario.

Next came unbelievable juggling dexterityby Flippo and Crissy. Once again the clownstook the audience by storm with Busy Bee.

Dorian Blake was brought back for a secondappearance and was greeted by an unbeliev-able round of applause (Note, this performerreally makes the ladies in the audience sit upand take notice). He performed one of themost rapid substitution escapes, leaving theaudience breathless. Needless to say, Dorianwas brought back for a second bow to a sen-sational round of applause and whistles.

The TNT & Royal Olympic Circus playedthe Seminary South Shopping Center in Ft.Worth, Texas, Aug. 5-8.1 visited for the lastshow on the 8th.

The show has a whole new appearance thisyear because the Center had put three newsteel cables across the mall, and a brand neworange and yellow canopy covered the wholearea. A new red canopy also covered thegrandstand area, which is nice when the tem-perature hits 102 degrees.

The show was longer than it usually is (thisone lasted 40 minutes) and because of this, the Hnucs, Ingrid and Walter, did not do theplate spinning act. They are doing their finejuggling act, of course.Terry O'Brien and Camille (and sons Owen

and Liam), open with unicycles and closewith the slack wire, balancing and jugglingact.

Tim Tegge does his fire eating and a turn asTwinkles the clown. He also plays excellentdrums to the spirited renditions of the oldcircus tunes played on the organ by his mo-ther, Louise Tegge.

Good, responsive crowds for the twelveshows made everyone happy.

in theCIRCUS WORLD CHIEF UNHAPPY

(by John Wark - as reported in the SentinelStar of July 1,1981).

Ever since Mattel, Inc., held its annual stockholder meeting June 12, news stories havebeen popping up that say the toy conglom-erate is considering selling its group of enter-tainment companies which includes RinglingBros, and Bamum & Bailey Circus World. In the wake of the stories, Mattel and Cir-

cus World executives have scrambled to putthings in perspective.James Murphy, president and chief operat-

ing officer of the Central Florida theme park,wa: at the stockholder's meeting.

He left chagrined."The news conference (after the meeting)

was a disappointment/' Murphy says. "It's(the publicity) not needed when we're tryingto establish credibility and stability."

As Murphy tells it, "a persistent reporter"at the end of the news conference, "lookingfora story ... twisted the words of (Mattelchairman) Art Spear."

Murphy says Spear was asked if Mattel hadever considered selling Circus World and Spearreplied, "Yes, there have been times in thepast few years when we considered it"The newsman said he noticed that Mattel

was not emphasizing funding of its entertain-ment group but was concentrating its finan-cial resources on building up its business intoys and hobbies, publishing aod electronicgoods.

Spear, says Murphy, replied "that's a fact,"but said the company was not ignoring itsentertainment companies, which includeCircus World, the two traveling RinglingBros, circus shows, the Ice Follies and Hol-iday on Ice.

Spear also was asked if Mattel would ser-iously consider an offer for Circus World ifsomeone made one.

"Art said if in fact someone were to ap-proach us and we checked them out andthey made an offer we were interested in,we would consider it," says Murphy.

"But that would be true of Six Flags, Dis-ney, any business/* Murphy added. "Nextthing we know these articles come out."

Murphy says the stories were "not true".Every year there are stories about Mattel

selling Circus World, he says. Murphy saysSpear made it clear that Mattel is not in-volved in discussions with Circus Worldsuitors.

"I guess it is one of those misquotes, a mis-interpretation.

"We're continuing on. We completed oursecond phase of capital expansion. We'rejust wrapping up some loose ends and pre-paring for a stronger summer. We have newshows, we're constantly bringing in moreanimals and more acts. We're increasing ouradvertising, going into TV and radio."

Murphy who was hired by Mattel last Sep-tember to turn the theme park around fi-nancially, has been battling uphill. Atten-dance at the park which last year had drop-ped to 1.1 million annually, has continuedto slip.

"Overall, it's (attendance) still slow. But itparallels tourism in the entire state," saysMurphy.

Meanwhile, industry insiders were passingbets on whether the Marriott Corp. will makea bid for Circus World. The company ownstheme parks in Gurnee, III., Santa Clara, Ca.and Rye, N.Y., and is said to have sought anattraction foothold here several times.John Anderson, Marriott's vice president in

charge of theme parks, said the rumor "iswithout foundation."

"It's ironic," says Murphy, "that this comeswhen we're in the final stages of campgroundand hotel studies (for Circus World). We'vejust presented our three year plan/' which isawaiting Mattel approval.

"I'm sure not counting on anything like that(selling Circus World) happening in the nearfuture."

PEOPLEDOUGLAS MacVALLEY (stunts) has beenofficially named talent and acts coordinatorfor Peter Jackson Productions, New York-Atlantic City.

JOEY JORDAN, juggler, will remain at thePlayboy Hotel-Casino in Atlantic City forthe duration of the summer and into the fall.He will unveil his new juggling act in Sept.

TERRY HEAD, comic and RICHARD EWELLsoloist are featured in the Ice Capades showin Atlantic City, playing there through Sept.4th.

A MAGIC REVIEW .. .by Tom Piccard

New for magicians who work with doves.Having been in the business of both per-forming magic, creating magic and clowningfor over 15 years now, it's refreshing whensomething worthwhile and serviceable popsup.I work with doves myself when performing

magic shows and I had thought I had usedabout every dove harness device ever creat-ed • and they always gave me problems -fumbling for snaps to release the bird madethe trick look clumsy and sloppy.

I tried one type of harness and had to useboth hands and my elbow to get the thingopened, I tried another kind and while itwas fast opening, the metal band was toomuch for the bird. I injured a bird beforegiving up on that one.

Now, a friend of mine. Jimmy Ray, him-self a super star of magic - solves all theproblems with his new Dove Harness. Hehas made the action of the release so simpleand so smooth that if you can just move thethumb of one hand, out pops the bird. Sosimple a child can do dove steals like a pro.

SPECIALTHE VACANT LOT

BY KEN HODGE

When the circus rolls its canvasAnd disappears from sight,When the soft light of morningPushes back the night;Gone is billowing canvas,Remaining there insteadIs crushed and rumpled grasslandby hoofs and pachyderm tread.Pungency of tanbarkSpoor of spitting snarling catSmell of fish where seal had barked,Peanuts sweet aroma where chattering mon-

key sat;Odors strangely blendidTo rival perfume's scent. The only remaining vestageOf a happy day well spent.Where barker's rasping voiceAnd beat of rhythmical drumExtoled the wonders within.Inviting all to come.Where Calliope screamed its momful song

ReportSUMMERFEST'81

BY CHRISTINA ENGLIASH

This year's Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wise.,which ran from June 25 to July 5, featuredsome of America's finest entertainment amongwhich was Ron Kelroy's Festival Circus. Itwas by far one of the finest productions hehas ever produced up there (it's his 9th year).

Leading the way was the intro and ringmas-tering of Col. Lucky Larabee; Overture '81directed by Keith Killinger; The Great Hu-berto; Hollywood Stuntman; The Jupier Trio;Miss Loni and Miss Barbara, foot jugglers; Al-onzo & Co., whips and ropes; The ChapmanSisters, revolving ladder; Renee & Michele'sslides for life; Katinka's Poodles; Lou AnnJacobs, single trapeze; The Nock Bros., swaypoles and the Le Moine Troupe, aerial mo-torcycle, ending with a grand finale featur-ing a patriotic salute to America.

Once again Festival Circus has outdone it-self with color and extravagance. For elevendays the show played to capacity includingSRO and viewers from adjacent bleacherseats. Not one show was lost despite severewinds. The circus was rated a 4 star special by the

Milwaukee audiences. There were two blueand white checkerboard stages topped withred ring curbs, red and white sidewall canvascordoned off the circus area with blue pen-nants at the juncture of each section of blea-chers, a total of 75 flags. Along each of theoutdoor riggings were bright multi-coloredpennants and the band tent was white andbright yellow.

And crowds with approval roar. There is but the crowing of the cock. That and nothing more.Where antics of the clumsy clownAnd aerialist's graceful flightHad boggled the imaginationAnd challenged human might.A lonely piece of paperWas wafted like a kiteAnd sailed across the vacant lotThen disappeared from sight.
