IT WAS an 'artery' by-pass heart operation for CLIF-FORD VARGAS in March. The circus owner is nowback on the show taking it easy, but still looking af-ter important business matters.. .Delivery of a newbaby elephant was been taken by the circus, but inthe meantime 3 elephants, a camel and a truck weresold to Mexico's Circo Union. Business for the bigtenter remains excellent.Word is that American Continental has a very goodprogram, well put together, with lots of 3 ring action, and the Charles Troupe (formerly on RBBB) of tee-terboard performers is one of the highlights. One of the baby elephants leased by PEE WEE andJOANNE PINSON from DOREY MILLER spookedand took off down the midway at the Tampa Fairduring the Kool Aid Circus. Pee Wee was knockeddown when the bull ran between two cars. Fortun-ately no one was injured and the only real damagewas to the awning of the SENSATIONAL LEIGHS'trailer. Pee Wee trucked the bull back to Oklahomaand replaced it with another punk which knows 'it'splace' and the Pinsons have had no further problem.SNAPSHOTS: BUCKLES and BARBARA WOOD-COCK have been getting sensational publicity in NewYork (newspapers, TV, People and US magazines).AFTER DARK is doing a major spread on BENNYWILLIAMS which will be out sometime this summer.Meanwhile, thanks to their good friend BOBBYJOHNSON, Buckles and Barbara have been taking inall the hit Broadway shows, even called and invitedme to come up, which I appreciated but (alas) worksummons. Buckles told me they dined with WalterCronkite on opening night in NYC... DIME andCONNIE WILSON spot-dating the Hamid route willreturn to Texas despite the shake-up in Clown Alleydue there this fall... A 'first' for Beatty-Cole thisseason, is in the inclusion of an intermission...Clowns BILL VAUGHAN and ED BALL trucked thenostalgic and newly rennovated KENNETH WAITEheads to JOE SHERMAN who used them for the firsttime in Lexington.. .RAM (Rosaire) ZOPPE was puz-zled to find the shirts and two ballerina costumes forher chimps stolen from the dressing room at MedinahTemple.. .DEREK ROSAIRE goes to Circus Circusin Reno this summer with Tony, the Wonder Horse..Meanwhile the family is spot-dating Castle.. .LINDA(Rosaire) BAUMANN is back in the swim playingmalls with a petting zoo.. .Husband RICHARD, for-merly a free-lance field producer for NBC-TV gave uphis post to tour with his wife.. .When Derek goes toReno, ELLIAN, DUKE and DEREK, Jr. will spot-

date 3 rings of Arabian high school horses... REDGATES is touring a sharp looking, first class conces-sion unit - plexiglass stands, fully illuminated.. .KAYBALDRIGE stooged for NORBU in Lexington, calledlight cues and did web (busy gal).. .Does JOE SHER-MAN have a new romance? Is her name WANDA?ERIK ADAMS, Jr. was unhappy when his brand newtrailer was backed into recently, and speaking of mis-haps WALLY and CHERYL's car and trailer were hitby a truck, the unit went over an embankment (I'mtold) and was totally demolished.. .GEE GEE deci-ded against the property next to WALLY NAGHTIN,but still plans to buy a place in Gibsonton eventually. .STU MILLER'S magic show opens May 20 at Jef-ferson (Oh) for a 26 week tour.. .ALBERTO andSANDY ZOPPE took delivery on a new 36 ft. housetrailer in Altoona while appearing there with GardenBros.. .Organist JOHN ASBURY has recovered fromhis auto accident, is back at work.. .Boom Boom'sson TOM BROWNING is on the Navy's newest de-stroyer, the USS Peterson, which is trailing Russianships in the Gulf of Mexico. Watch-dogs on the Hus-kies who may or may not be attempting to place sub-marine pens off the Cuban coast.Veteran clown (retired) JACK HARRISON, who hadopen heart surgery at 79, is now 83, chipper andcheerful. He and VELMA reside at Joe and PeggyZoppe's trailer park at Seagoville (Tex) which Velmamanages... .The cult following of ELVIS PRESLEYcertainly rivals that of Valentino or even the 'StarTrekkies".. .Point in Fact: The Rupp Arena Manage-ment in Lexington, where Elvis was scheduled to ap-pear just before his death, refunded ALL but $62,000Those ticket holders RE FUSED a refund, wishing toretain their tickets as souveniers.Word from Boston is that agent FRANK SOPER hasbeen ill in a hospital and that his partner ABBOTTADAMS suffered a stroke in January... LINDA andHEINZ SHAPPf's baby is due soon.. .DENISE ZOP-PE, married to ANTONIO OLMEDA, is on Carden-Johnson where with Antonio's twin, PEPE, the triodo a 3 ring dressage display using Spanish costuming.JOE ZOPPE is putting the finishing touches to a cle-ver and original new animal act called Zoppe's Mini-ature Medieval Fantasy. Joe has broken 10 poniesdraped in Medeival blankets and trappings and bear-ing 'electronic' dummies on their backs. Another Con Colleano? If the predictions ofWinnie Colleano and others who have seenyoung Dino Menendez work on the wire arecorrect, there is a good chance that Dino mayjust achieve that status.Dino is 11 years old and works with his sisterAnita (9) who is also an accomplished wire ar-tist. The pair just recently completed theirfirsi professional engagement, nine weeks at

j i . l Chicago in Bollingbrook, III. Then theyopened on May 1st with Cirque Gatini in Que-bec, for a summer-long tour. Representativesof Catini flew to Sarasota to see the youngman work and following the performance hewas signed for the summer.Winnie Colleano thinks so highly of Dino shehas given him exclusive use of the title "Wiz-ard of the Wire" which was used by Con.Dino comes by his ability naturally as his fa-ther Rafael Menendez was a highly skilled per-former in several fields. He has worked withmany of the circus 'greats' of recent years. Hismother, Yanna, is a former prima ballerinaand still performs on the trapeze.Dino has a natural flair for the wire and doesseveral maneuvers that few performers, withmany years experience can do.I sat with Karl Wallenda during the circus per-formance at Old Chicago just three weeks be-fore his fatal fall and he said "the boy is verygood, he could be the world's best in a fewyears."When a Chicago Tribune reporter interviewed

He practic-ed every day in the "back yard" in additionto doing three shows a day, seven days a weekwhile at Old Chicago. One nice thing about the young man, he is areal American boy, not the least bit affectedwith his status as a star.

control, with Joe Controlling the ponies and the elec-tronic figures garbed as Merlin the Magician. This in-teresting new act is already booked for the Rodeo cir-cuit and promises to be a smash on indoor dates nextwinter.. .Meanwhile Joe picked up the somersaulthorse, Billy, from the George Hanneford Troupewhen Vicki played Tyler (Tex) with Kelly Bros. Thereport is George Jr. will not ride anymore, and Vicki.was heart-sick to see the horse go.BOUQUETS: To the Zoppe Arabian Riders, the pre-cocious chimp Kenya, that incredible pony, Windy. As in everything the Zoppes do, originality is stressedwith lots of comedy and top-notch riding as well. Theact has simply got to be, at this time, the BEST rid-ing troupe in the entire world. Moreover they arewarm, co-operative people who do their work, mindtheir own business, and leave their egos — with theirgreatness — in the ring where it belongs. Would thatALL performers be so humble!ROAD TO NOWHERE: When Bill Strong and PeeWee Pinson trekked off to pick up Bill's truck, leftin a Kentucky mountain town for repair, the teamgot lost leaving Lexington and followed a beautiful, new road which dropped them off - - yep, you guess-ed it! - - in the middle of an open field.See you down the road, luvs.

ENGLISH CIRCUSESby Jack NiblettAs if to dispel rumors that the Circus is "fal-tering" in England, we have two new showson the road this season, to add to the long es-tablished Fossett's, Chipperfield's, Robert's,Hoffman's, Austen's and Cottle circuses, inaddition to the half-dozen smaller shows.Sally Chipperfield, youngest daughter of Ric-hard Chipperfield director of the "big show",together with her husband, Jim Clubb, hasstarted out with her own circus this year. Theshow is designed to play smaller towns, whichthe large Chipperfield Circus does not visit.Sally's show, which I saw at Kenilworth, hadher brother Tommy presenting ponies and ri-ding high school, Sally's poodles, jockey andacrobatic monkeys, James Clubb's Russianbears, Sally's five lionesses presented by JamesClubb, the Ivanovs, revolving trapeze, Terry Ef-flet, musical muscle man, Miss Sharon, on thecorde lisse, Richard Sandow, on the rola bola,Miss Amanda on the silverwire, Langre Juniorin an African Fantasy (dagger, spear, ladderbalancing), 'Ostrich' act by Gwyn and MaggieClown Rico Woodie, concluding with membersof the company in a western act, titled "TheDenvers." This program will undergo some al-terations and additions as the season progress-es, and is likely to soon include elephants. The second new English circus to start out thisseason was Davey's Circus Spectacular. Thisone is owned by David Bowditch, a newcom-

er to the business, and its first performancewas at Southall, near London.Davey opened with a group of ponies shownby Jack Varney, and other acts included threefrom South Africa, the Phoenix Trio, flyingtrapeze, the Oakley Duo, adagio balancing act,and The Ryers, aerial cradle. Los Kedellos ap-peared with their balancing act, while SallyKeddolo, from this family, delighted with hersolo corde lisse act. Richard Viner rode highschool, while clowning was in the hands of'John O'Groats (John Slater). John's wife ap-peared as the Lady Ringmaster. Two animalacts from Roberts Circus were booked - fivetigers presented by newcomer Alberto, withRoberts elephants (2) and spotted ponies (2),shown on this occasion by Beverley Roberts. This show made an impressive start, but hassince been plagued with misfortune. High windand snow storms caused considerable damageto the big top and this aggravated by staffingproblems, caused the show to return to win-ter quarters, after a month on the road, for re-pairs and reforming.

However, Davey's Circus Spectacular is confi-dently expected to be out again within a fewweeks, and with a new seasonal circus operat-ing all summer at Cleethorpes Zoo, and withGerry Cottle having his second unit out, for along season, there are more circuses on theroad in England now, than for many a year. _

KATHY VASCHEK visited the M&M Circusat Omaha, with her new son. Her sister CINDYworked in the aerial wire act.
