Note — These procedures were developed in a lab environment. Many things affect production environments beyond prediction or duplication in a lab environment. Follow recommended practice by conducting proof-of-concept testing for acceptable results before implementing this solution in your production environment. Test the implementation in a non-production, isolated test environment that otherwise matches your production environment.
Solution ComponentsFigure 1 shows the architecture of Cisco and Hitachi Adaptive Solutions for Converged Solutions using SAP HANA. It uses Cisco Unified Computing System server blades with the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform family. These design and deployment guides have details on the following:
Compute
This incorporates servers based on the latest Intel x86 processors. The servers are available in Cisco’s advanced blade factor, managed by Cisco UCS Manager.
Network
The integrated network fabric in the system provides a low-latency, lossless, 10/25/40/100 Gb/s Ethernet fabric. Networks for LAN, SAN, and management access are consolidated within the fabric.
The unified fabric uses the innovative single-connect technology to lower costs by reducing the number of network adapters, switches, and cables. This also lowers the power and cooling needs of the system.
Storage access
Cisco UCS system provides consolidated access to SAN storage and network attached storage over the unified fabric. This provides storage choices and investment protection.
Also, server administrators can pre-assign storage-access policies to storage resources, for simplified storage connectivity and management leading to increased productivity.
Management
The system uniquely integrates compute, network and storage access subsystems, enabling it to be managed as a single entity through Cisco UCS Manager. This increases IT staff productivity by enabling storage, network, and server administrators to collaborate on service profiles that define the desired physical configurations and infrastructure policies for applications.
Service profiles increase business agility by enabling IT to automate and provision resources in minutes instead of days.
Software ComponentsFind the supported SAP HANA operating systems, storage microcode versions, and replication software versions for in Hitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA Cockpit User’s Guide (MK-92ADPTR111-07 or latest).
SAP HANA CockpitSAP HANA cockpit provides a single point of access to a range of administration and detailed monitoring tools of SAP HANA databases. Also, it integrates development required administrative capabilities through the SAP database explorer.

SAP HANA administrators can create their own snapshots and clones (thick or thin) of SAP HANA environments. Also, they can forecast storage and server resources, based on advanced analytics. Monitored storage resources include device mapping, LUN performance, port performance, storage pools, and more.
SAP HANASAP HANA converges database and application platform capabilities in-memory to transform transactions, analytics, text analysis, predictive and spatial processing so businesses can operate in real-time. This combines database, data processing, and application platform capabilities in a single in-memory platform. Also, the platform provides libraries for predictive, planning, text processing, spatial, and business analytics — all on the same architecture.
By eliminating the divide between transactions and analytics, SAP HANA allows you to answer any business question anywhere in real time.

Hitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA PlatformHitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA Platform runs as a web application. When needed, the adapter calls the web service on the management server. Then the web service communicates to the attached Hitachi storage and returns the information to the adapter. In addition, the web service collects device-mapping information from the SAP HANA host by using SSH. The web service executes SQL queries for retrieving information from the SAP HANA database. The web service manages all configuration information, storing it in the local disk of the management server. Then, the adapter passes configuration information to the web service.
Hitachi ShadowImageHigh-speed, nondisruptive local mirroring technology of Hitachi ShadowImage, a part of Hitachi In-System Replication Bundle, rapidly creates multiple copies of mission-critical information within all Hitachi storage systems.
ShadowImage keeps data RAID-protected and fully recoverable, without affecting service or performance levels. You can split replicated data volumes from the host applications and used for system backups, application testing, and data mining applications, while business continues to run at full capacity.
Hitachi Thin ImageThe high-speed, nondisruptive snapshot technology of Hitachi Thin Image snapshot software rapidly creates up to one million point-in-time copies of mission-critical information within any Hitachi storage system or virtualized storage pool without impacting host service or performance levels.
Because snapshots store only the changed data, the volume of storage capacity required for each snapshot copy is substantially smaller than the source volume. As a result, Thin Image snapshot software can provide significant savings over full volume cloning methods.
Thin Image snapshot copies are fully read/write compatible with other hosts. They can be used for system backups, application testing, and data mining applications while the business continues to run at full capacity.
Hitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA Platform uses Thin Image to create snapshots.

Adapter Deployment Scenarios These deployment scenarios are an overview of different SAP landscape integration points where Hitachi Adapter for SAP HANA provides great operational benefits, especially to SAP operations.
Single SAP HANA InstanceYou can use Hitachi Adapter for SAP HANA to manage a single HANA instance on your environment. To do so, install the adapter and deploy the multi-target application to the specified HANA instance.
Figure 2
Multiple SAP HANA InstancesTo manage multiple SAP HANA instances with one adapter installation, deploy the multitarget application to any of the HANA instances, and then remotely manage multiple HANA instances. Import the multi-target application to one HANA instance on your environment. Importing the multi-target application to every HANA instance is not necessary.
The adapter is the central management mode in this scenario. In other words, all HANA instances that import the multi-target application and share the adapter web service share the same data. It can be used for high availability purposes.
12
12
For example, if one HANA instance is down on your environment, you can still use another HANA instance with this adapter for management operation.
Figure 3
13
13
Multiple SAP HANA Instances with SAP HANA ExpressAlso, the multi-target application can be imported in the SAP HANA 2.0 express edition. You may use the SAP HANA 2.0 express edition only to manage multiple HANA instances on your environment.
Figure 4

System RequirementsThis describes the system hardware and software requirements for the various components used in Cisco and Hitachi Adaptive Solutions for Converged Infrastructure when used with SAP HANA.
Management Server RequirementsThese are the requirements for the management server to run Hitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA Platform.
Hitachi recommends at least 240 GB disk space for the configuration of two HANA hosts and two Hitachi storage systems. If you have more hosts and Hitachi storage arrays, then add additional disk space:
10 GB for each additional HANA host
100 GB for each additional Hitachi storage array
Use the following formula to calculate the disk space:
240 GB + (10 GB × number of additional HANA hosts) + (100 GB × number of additional Hitachi storage arrays).
For example, if you have a total of 5 HANA scale-up hosts (3 additional) and 4 Hitachi storage arrays (2 additional), then do this to calculate the disk space:
240 GB + (10 GB × 3 additional hosts) + (100 GB × 2 additional arrays) = 470 GB
Network Hardware RequirementsThese are the supported network hardware requirements for switches.
