Citing Novels for Students

using NoodleTools

This presentation contains examples

for four types of citations:

1. Introductory material

(including the author biography, plot, themes, style, historical context, and critical overview)

2. Critical essay written for Novels for Students

3. Previously published critical essay from a journal

4. Previously published critical essay from a book

Note: You must determine what type of information you are using in order to cite it properly.

Example #1

Introductory Material:

author biography, plot, characters,

themes, style, historical context,

and critical overview

Pull down window to

select citation type:

Select:

Database

Citation has 3 parts:

Database

Select:

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Database

You may skip the

Database accession number

(It is not required by MLA)

Select the date you last accessed

the article online.

For databases you may

truncate the URL to the domain level

You may skip the DOI

(It is not required by MLA)

Article

Look at the beginning or end of the

article for the author.

The introductory material is unsigned;

so leave the author information blank.

Since the title of the article is

the title of a book we need to

use the title tag

OR

Italicize in Word®

[title]A Clockwork Orange[/title]

Include page numbers

for the entire article.

Use the database source citation to fill in

the Reference Source section.

Choose editor.

Enter the editor’s name. If

you have more than one

editor click

+Add another contributor.

Select Other for

type of Reference source.

Fill in the title of the reference book.

Fill in the volume number.

Since Novels for Students is an

ongoing series, you will leave

the Total # volumes blank.

Fill in the publication information.

Place a brief annotation (1-3

sentences) here telling what

sections you used and the value of

the source to your research.

Click Submit.

Here is the citation.

Notice how the title

is both italicized

and in quotations.

You can always

go back and edit.

Example #2

Critical Essay written for

Therefore you would cite it

as a reference book article

Pull down window to

select citation type:

Look at the end of the article

for the author.

Go to the beginning of the

article for the Article/Entry title

Include the page numbers for

the critical essay

Use the database source citation to fill in

the Reference Source section.

focus of the essay.

Click Submit.

Citation is placed

in alphabetical

order!.

Look for the words: Journal, Review, Studies,

Research, Quarterly in the title
