CITROEN Part of PSA since 1976. Founded in 1919 by French industrialist Andre Citroen, it was the first European company to use production line assembly methods. It commissioned the Budd Company of the US to develop a prototype of the Traction Avant that was the world’s first unitary body car with independent suspension and front-wheel drive. But it was so costly to develop that Citroen was bankrupt and was taken over by major shareholder Michelin. Citroen development post-war included the 2CV, the H-van and the DS. It bought Maserati in 1968 and in the same year, 49 per cent shareholder Michelin sold its stake to Fiat. Fiat sold it back to Michelin in 1973 and Citroen went bankrupt (again) in 1974 before merging with Peugeot in the same year. Peugeot liſted its stake to 89.95 per cent and created PSA Peugeot Citroen. Citroen sold Maserati to De Tomaso in 1975. PSA has a joint venture with Toyota to produce the C1-Aygo-107 light-car model. PSA sold 14 per cent of its shares to its long-term Chinese partner, Dongfeng Motor Corporation in 2014. TOYOTAIn 2005, Toyota partnered with Citroen and Peugeot to produce the two-door city car named B-Zero. It was made in a joint-venture factory in the Czech Republic, the Citroen version was the C1 while Peugeot badged it as the 107 (upgraded in 2014 to the 108) and Toyota the Aygo. The three-cylinder petrol engine is a Daihatsu design.

PEUGEOTCitroen and Peugeot merged in 1974 under the PSA Peugeot Citroen corporate banner. Subsequent vehicle models used many common components, such as the Citroen Xsara and Peugeot 306 which used the same platform and drivetrain. PSA plans to now reduce platforms to only two and to halve the model range.
