Pune: Memories of the time spent with the late architect, Charles Correa, who was known for his landmark de- signs, were shared at a gather- ing organised by the Dr Bhanu- ben Nanavati College of Architecture, which commem- orated Correa’s life on a day he would have turned 85. Young architect Rohit Pot- dar believes he “lost a father fig- ure” on June 16, the day Correa passed away. Potdar works for Charles Correa Associates, which was set up by the late ar- chitect and urban planner. “I had only started out and I was facing difficulty finding a house in Mumbai. Charles spoke to people he knew and managed to find a place for me within a few days. He cared a lot for everyone in the office, until his last days,” said Potdar. People, who knew Correa personally, including archi- tects, students, as well as nu- merous clients and friends, were invited to share their thoughts at the gathering. The Inter-University Cen- tre for Astronomy and Astro- physics (IUCAA) auditorium was specially chosen as the ven- ue for the event since the cam- pus is hailed as one of Correa’s greatest architectural designs. Founding director of IU- CAA, Dr Jayant Narlikar, de- scribed in vivid detail how Cor- rea came to be the architect of an institute, which is now re- nowned throughout the world of astronomy. “I was asked by the University Grants Com- mission (UGC) to set up a cen- tre for astronomy and astro- physics and naturally I wanted the flagship centre to be con- structed by an architect of re- pute. Along with some of my friends, I was apprehensive that some of the bureaucrats from UGC might insist on the Public Works Department (PWD) building the campus. Ul- timately, I was able to get a go- ahead when I proposed Cor- rea’s name as the architect,” Narlikar said. The outgoing director of the IUCAA, Dr Ajit Kembhavi, remarked that he was perhaps one of Correa’s last clients. “He had, very recently, finished de- signing a new building on our campus. Its construction is scheduled to begin shortly. Cor- rea had a few objections to some of the changes that the UGC officials had proposed and he was aiming to stick to his original plan. Eventually, Cor- rea got his way and I informed him. He was breathless and could barely speak over the phone but he was enthusiastic about the news. Five days later, he passed away,” Kembhavi re- called. Pune: The BRTS on the14.5km Sangvi-Kiwale corri-dor in Pimpri Chinchwad willbecome operational on Sep-tember 5. The civic adminis-tration is making all out ef-forts to complete the works atbus stations, signaling sys-tems and pedestrian cross-ings.

Unlike the Pune Munici-pal Corporation, which built apilot BRTS nine years back, the Pimpri Chinchwad Mu-nicipal Corporation has nosuch experience to bank on.However, the PCMC author-ities insist they won’t repeatthe mistakes committed bytheir Pune counterparts. TheBRTS corridor in Pimpri willprovide a link to the Mumbai-Pune expressway as well asthe Dehu Road-Katraj bypass.

The Pimpri ChinchwadBRTS has features similar tothe 7.1km Sangamwadi-Vish-rantwadi corridor in Pune, which was inaugurated lastSaturday.

All 21 bus stations have au-

tomatic doors which open af-ter the bus gets aligned withthe station. Installation ofdoors was in progress till lastweek. All bus stations have tel-evision screens which have apassenger information sys-tem displaying the bus route, arrival of the next bus andtheir frequency. Bus doorsopen on the right side of thebus station.

On Tuesday, some of thebus stations were gettingfreshly painted while otherswere being given final tou-ches. The work of installing atraffic signal was in progress at Ravet. Most otherworks related to pedestriansignals, traffic signals at im-portant junctions and pedes-trian crossings have beencompleted.

Unlike just a 7.1km stretchin Pune, the PCMC boasts of abigger corridor spanning14.5kms, which links theMumbai-Pune expressway aswell as the Dehu Road-Katrajbypass. Passengers alightingat Kiwale, either from Mum-bai or Satara, will find it easy

to reach areas of PimpriChinchwad or even in areas ofPune. Although the BRTS cor-ridor ends at Sangvi, busesplying on the route will gofrom Aundh, Universitychowk and Shivajinagar.

The route was earlier

starting point of the express-way is also at a distance ofnearly 300 meters from thespot.

The trial runs are on sincelast one month which in-cludes training of drivers, conductors and other staff

members. Traffic wardensand security guards have beendeployed at junctions and busstations. Mayor Shakuntala Dharadesaid the BRTS will cut downtravel time, congestion andpollution.

named Aundh-Ravet corridor, but the PCMC office-bearerssaid that it should be renamedthe Sangvi-Kiwale corridor asAundh falls in Pune city. At Ki-wale, there is a large bus ter-minal, just near the DehuRoad-Katraj bypass. The
