    John 2:10

January 20, 2019 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

  • From the desk of Fr. Chris—

“Falling in love is the easy part...staying in love is the real work of the spiritual life.” This past week, I spent a few days in Chicago with an organization that was created to support and form Di-ocesan Priests called the Institute for Priestly Formation, IPF. In 2017, the Diocese of Pittsburgh asked me to begin a particular program with IPF that is aimed towards forming Diocesan Priests to be Spiritual Directors. The theme of this week was ‘Spiritual Fatherhood.’ We learned that, as priests, we are called to be Spiritual Fathers to our parishioners and to those we offer spiritual direction to. The way we learn how to be Spiritual Fathers is by entering into relationship with the Father’s Son, Jesus Christ, who desires to reveal the Father to us. You would not be reading this article if you did not have some experience in your life where the Son revealed the Fathers Love to you. The key now? To remain in His Love. Falling in love is the easy part...staying in love is the real work of the spiritual life. Remember to seek new ways to remain in His Love daily. Turn to Him who turns to you. Reach out to Him who reaches out to you. Trust the One who trusts in you. Remember to pray today and allow Jesus to fulfill His Father’s loving will for Him. Allow Jesus to bring you to the Father’s Love today. In the Merciful heart of Jesus— Fr. Chris

Becoming One ~Under the protection of the Merciful Jesus~

I find myself constantly praying for God’s peace in the hearts of all of the faithful in the City Center Parishes. Our situation is difficult— we are learning to work together, pray together, and get to know one another while becoming one parish in a relatively short amount of time. (Here is where my prayer comes in.) God offers us a peace that only He can give. If we search for peace in our world, we come up empty. The world teaches us to be in control—always, which leads to selfishness and greed. Peace in our hearts will come when we turn to our Lord, placing our trust in Him and His eternal love for us. It is only then, that we are able to open our hearts and allow Him to lead us on our journey. During these upcoming months, as we continue this difficult transition in our parishes, let us pray together and for each other—for the courage to place our trust in our Lord—with a peaceful heart—while He leads us. Praying for God’s peace in our hearts— Dolores Shipe, Pastoral Associate: City Center Parishes

    AMERICAN HISTORY—THIS WEEK IN BLACK

HISTORY Joshua Gibson (c. December 21, 1911 – January 20, 1947) was an American Negro league baseball catcher. Baseball historians consider Gibson to be among the very best power hitters and catchers in the history of any league, including Major League Baseball (MLB). In 1972, he became the second Negro league player to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Gibson played for the Homestead Grays from 1930 to 1931, moved to the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1932 to 1936, and returned to the Grays from 1937 to 1939 and 1942 to 1946. In 1937, he played for Ciudad Trujillo in Trujillo's Dominican League and from 1940 to 1941, he played in the Mexican League for Rojos del Águila de Veracruz. Gibson served as the first manager of the Santurce Crabbers, one of the most historic franchises of the Puerto Rico Baseball League.

  • St Benedict the Moor School Friends of St. Benedict the Moor School- Our second-grade class has made some wonderful feathered-friends this school year through their partnership with the One Aviary for Every Student Program. The Aviary has partnered with our teachers to bring birds from the Pittsburgh area and around the world to our school. These photos show our second graders meeting Slippy the Penguin and Sunny the Parrot. They love learning about these beautiful and special creatures. In the coming months, the students look forward to bird watching in our school neighborhood and to a field trip to the National Aviary!
