The 27th Annual Dallas Women’s

Foundation Luncheon will be held No-

vember 7th at the Hilton Anatole and

will explore gender equality and media

representation with keynote speaker

Geena Davis. Known for her roles in

such films as A League of Their Own,

Thelma & Louise and The Accidental

Tourist, Davis broke barriers with her

award-winning portrayal of the Presi-

dent of the United States in the ABC

show Commander in Chief. A pas-

sionate advocate for gender equality in

the media, she is also the founder of

the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in

Media and its programming arm “See

Jane”. Tickets are $350. Sponsor-

ships are available. The luncheon is the

largest annual fundraiser for the Dal-

las Women’s Foundation, which over

the last 27 years has invested more

than $19 million in programs benefiting

women and girls and the greater com-

munity. Founded in 1985, the Dallas

Women’s Foundation is a non-profit

organization operating as a commu-

nity foundation. Granting $2.5 million

annually, the Dallas Women’s Founda-

tion has invested millions in more than

1,000 programs, assisting more than

half of a million of the region’s women

and girls. The Dallas Women’s Foun-

dation is part of a global network of

women’s funds, and it is the largest re-

gional fund in terms of investment as-

sets. The Dallas Women’s Foundation

is at the center of a huge ripple effect.

“Geena Davis applies her consider-

able talents not only to portraying em-

powered women on screen, but also

to improving gender portrayals in the

media that influence young minds and

therefore the future of our culture and

our communities,” organization officials

said. “We are delighted to welcome

this unfaltering advocate for women

and girls and remarkably talented indi-

vidual to be the speaker at the Dallas

Women’s Foundation Luncheon.”

Texas favorite, Rhett Miller returns to the bill for his sixth year in a row, joined by alt-country giants The Gourds and pop folk duo, The O’s for the Annual Cystic Fibrosis Concert. These artists take to the Granada Theater stage in an effort to raise money and aware-ness for Cystic Fibrosis. Gordon Keith of 1310 The Ticket returns for his 4th year as host of the event. The CF Concert Series is an annual event that joins together musicians, music lovers and the Dallas community in an effort to raise money and awareness for the good fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threaten-ing, genetic disease affecting approxi-mately 70,000 children and adults; yet, there is no government funding for CF research. All research and progress towards finding better treatments and a cure rely on funding from events like this. The CFCS is put on by the Breathe Easy Foundation (BEF). The goal of both the CFCS and the Breathe Easy Foundation is to help raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for the great strides being made towards CF research. BEF proceeds go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The CF Concert Series was started in 2007 as a small effort organized by local music fans with a personal inter-est in helping to find better treatments and a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Rhett Miller has been a staple of the annual event, helping to raise nearly $100,000 in support of the Cystic Fibrosis cause. Other local musicians that have per-formed in support of CF include Sarah Jaffe, Murry Hammond, Brent Best, Ben Kweller, Doug Burr and Glen Far-ris. VIP tickets are $85 and includes early entrance at 6pm, an exclusive artist meet & greet with special per-formances, complimentary concert t-shirt, hors d’oeuvres and VIP gift. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals takes the stage live at the House of Blues with along with special guest Rayland Baxter. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’ 2005 debut album, Nothing but the Water revealed a musically sophis-ticated young band inspired by the music of the late ’60s/early ’70s and fronted by a then-21-year-old dynamo whose nuanced singing, organ playing and songwriting belied her age. The follow-up, 2007’s This Is Somewhere, confirmed that the band had no inter-est in following trends but was instead in pursuit of timeless expression as it forged its identity. On 2010’s self-titled third album, GPN, toughened by a half decade of nonstop roadwork, flexed their rock ’n’ roll muscles and con-firmed that they were in it for the long haul. Now, seven years after hitting the radar, they take a leap with their latest album The Lion The Beast The Beat. This album “plays on the duality of hu-man nature—the fact that we all have our demons and we all have the ability to be good,” Potter says. “More than ever, I think outside perception affects how we view ourselves… I started thinking about these archetypes: ev-eryone perceives a lion as a power-ful, glorious animal and a beast as a flawed, scary, unpleasant creature…but that’s just on the outside. You only have to read a few children’s fables to see those themes: the ‘Cowardly Lion’ from The Wizard of Oz, the Beast from Beauty and the Beast – I’m fascinat-ed by the idea that we all hold such a broad spectrum of impulses and how we choose to act on them makes us who we are. This album is really a different animal than our previous re-cords—no pun intended,” says Potter. “This process was more painstaking than on any other record we’ve made; a complete labor of love and hate. I credit the Nocturnals for courageously jumping off that cliff with me.”

The legendary Canadian rock band, Rush, bring their Clockwork Angels Tour to town, live at the American Air-lines Center. Their 33 city fall tour be-gan on September 7th in Manchester, NH, and will finish December 2nd inHouston. Clockwork Angels, which was released on June 12th, is the band’s 20th studio album. This is the renowned trio’s first new collection of original material in more than five years and their first studio release via An-them/Roadrunner records. With more than 40 million records sold worldwide and countless sold-out tours, Rush – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart – is not only one of the most in-ventive and compelling groups in rock history, but remains one of the most relevant. Singer/bassist Geddy Lee remarked, “‘Headlong Flight’ was one of those songs that was a joy to write-and record from beginning to end. Alex and I had blast jamming in my home studio one day before the 2nd leg of the Time Machine Tour and I did not revisit that jam until a year later. Alex and I assembled the song to be an instrumental and its original title was ‘Take that lampshade off yo head!’ but once we saw the lyrics Neil had written for ‘Headlong Flight,’ I knew that the spirit of the lyrics matched the instrumental perfectly and it was just a matter of making them fit and writing the melodies.” The RIAA has certified Rush for the third most consecutive gold/platinum studio albums by a rock band, topped only by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Rush’s vast catalog includes such classics as 1974’sself-titled debut, 1976’s 2112, 1981’s Moving Pictures, 1996’s Test for Echo and 2002’s Vapor Trails. Rush’s last studio album, 2007’s Snakes and Ar-rows debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, marking the band’s highest chart debut since 1993, as well as their elev-enth top 10 album in the U.S.

The early CourT PorTraiTsDiego Velázquez

Spanish painter Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez, became the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. As a child he exhibited the gifts of being skilled at art and began to study under Franciso de Herrera, founder of the Seville School, where he learned to paint with brushes that had long bristles. At age 12, Velázquez left the studio to apprentice under Francisco Pacheco, whose school of instruction focused on the academically correct representation of religious subjects. Pacheco played a very important role in Velázquez’s life. He studied with Pacheco for five years and in 1618, even married Pacheco’s daughter, yet there is no trace of Pacheco’s influence anywhere in Velázquez’s work. On a side note, as a matter of connection to the Góngora/Picasso exhibition currently being exhibited at the Meadows Museum, it was at Pacheco’s request that Velázquez paint a portrait of a the famous Spanish Poet, Luis de Góngora. In the spring of 1622, Velázquez traveled to Madrid with letters of introduction to the chaplain of the king, Don Juan Fonseca, who, upon the death of the king’s favorite court painter, sat for a portrait of himself that was presented to the royal court. Upon this presentation, the royal court decided to commission a portrait of the king. On August 16, 1623, King Philip IV posed for his portrait which was completed in one day. It is supposed that it was likely no more than a sketch of the king’s head, yet the royal court was pleased. Velázquez was moved to Madrid and it was declared that no other painter would portray the royal portrait, and that all other works were to be removed from circulation. Velázquez was 24 years old when he painted King Philip IV for the first time.

This exhibition will seek to examine four creative strategies that seem to be almost essential to creating and exhibiting modern sculpture: interest in modules, series and process; the artist’s preoccupation with the rela-tion between a whole and its parts; the experimental interplay between fragment and totality and the artist’s engagement with the modern world. This exhibition will focus on the works of artists such as Carl Andre, Richard Serra and Claes Oldenburg who typify the concepts represented.

This exhibition explores the work of contemporary women artists that has been produced over the past fifty years. The exhibition draws attention to the fact that there is only one thing these artists have in common and in doing so, asks the question, “What’s the difference, and does it matter?” This exhibition will highlight some already well-known works within the collection and compare/contrast them alongside recent acquisitions that have previously never been on view.

When one of Spain’s greatest poets, Luis de Góngora y Argote died in 1627, his poetry became largely forgotten for three hundred years until it underwent a rebirth at the hands of literary circles of the modern world. Just after World War II, Colonna, an editor and friend of Picasso, commissioned the artist to work on a series of illustrations for a book series entitled, Les Grands Peintres Modernes et le Livre, which was published in 1948.

MyTh & MagiCartwork of gerald McDermott

Gerald McDermott is a Caldecott Honor and Medal winning filmmaker, children’s book illustrator and author. He is best known for his collection of Trickster tales, a traditional form of literature that tells the tales of popular, well-known folk figures who often aim for lofty goals but because of their selfish motives, wind up winning in the worst possible way. In addition to Trickster tales, which feature characters from Brazil, West Africa, America, the Amazon and Hawaii, McDermott also created a series of books that pay homage to his Irish heritage as well as some mythological creation stories. McDermott began studying art at the age of four through a series of weekend workshops at an art institute near his home. It would seem that he was always drawn to art and expression in its various forms as he also acted in a weekly radio program and studied music and ballet through his junior high career. In college, he developed his first animated film based on his favorite story from childhood, The Stonecutter. To make his film authentic, he plunged deeply into researching the cultures and customs of the story’s origins. He was enamored with animation and took a sabbatical from the Pratt Institute of Design to work as a graphic designer for an educational television channel. He produced some animated pieces for The Electric Company on PBS and produced three more short films: Anansi the Spider, The Magic Tree and Sunflight, before he was approached by a children’s book editor to turn his animations into picture books. His illustrations have been praised for their bright colors and styles that seem to invoke timeless imagery inclusive of many cultures. This exhibition showcases the vibrant imagery that is he known for.

“Sightings” is a series of small-scale exhibitions and installations that explore work by established as well as emerging contemporary sculptors from around the world. In November, London-based artist, Eva Rothschild will exhibit her special brand of installation-art. Rothschild is known for her works that challenge and even reform concepts of minimalist and post-minimalist sculpture. Through her works, she often is able to create pieces that evoke thought from viewers. For her first ever public art commission in the United States, Eva created a large, red, green and black-striped, multi-directional archway that serves as an entryway to New York’s famous Central Park. For the observer, it is often difficult to derive what the artist was intending. Outwardly, with its spidery, mechanical-looking intersections and vibrant colors, it would be difficult to understand that the artist was inspired by the arching lines formed by the canopy of mature trees that line Central Park. The structure itself, like the trees, takes “root” a ten different points and then splays out, branchlike above its viewers. Rothschild, through her art, appears to favor creating pieces that accentuate or accessorize the transition that occurs between two different spaces that intersect. For the Nasher Sculpture Center, the artist has created an installation piece to highlight the transitional space of the Nasher’s entrance bay. An intricately woven network of painted piping will run up and along the walls, stream out on the floor, cascade over the furniture and integrate fully with the space. Rothschild has exhibited at the Hepworth Wakefield, Tate Britain, and Kunsthaus Basel museums. Her work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

Examples of proto-porcelain ap-peared in China around 3,000 years ago and hard-paste porcelain began to be made around 1,800 years ago. This precious product was some-times called “white gold,” especially in the West. Foreign trade and chang-ing domestic markets played a role in stimulating Chinese potters to continu-ally reinvent their repertoire of shapes and decorative techniques. These exchanges also illuminate important episodes in cultural history. During the 18th century a flourishing shipping business, known as the “China Trade,” developed between Western nations and the Chinese port of Canton.

Robert Cocke creates landscape paintings on panels that attempt to bring to life the light and wonder of natural environments. Inspired by the scenery that surrounded him for years in Arizona, Cocke creates works that reflect the mysteries while capturing the magical luminosity that brings scenery to life. The artist appreciates the juxtaposition of natural elements; the way tree limbs climb into the bluest sky, the stark contrast of the creviced mountains against the subtly smooth horizon and the splayed multi-colored strokes of sunlight just before dusk. These natural sights seem to arrange themselves into impossible and improbable combinations. In that way, they become almost unreal to the viewer. Suddenly a canopy of fall-colored trees becomes a surreal, feathered arch that transports passers to a magical time and place, void of the influence of humanity. For his third exhibition at the Valley House Gallery, Cocke explores what clouds means to us. Whether they are being blown into shapes of imaginary heroes, used for descriptions of fabric and luxurious things or simply notifying us of the impending weather, clouds play many important, often overlooked roles in life of humans. To add a dreamy, surrealistic element to his paintings, Cocke does not paint directly from life, but rather from memory. When asked about this process, Cocke said, “Synthesizing the images, rather than working from a directly observed scene, allows me the freedom to manipulate the formal elements, to create a parallel world that is a kind of distillation of my thoughts and experiences in this one. I want my work to serve as a reminder that there is a more mysterious realm beyond the urban, technological world that most of us inhabit.”

In Electric Labyrinth, Tommy Fitzpatrick’s inspiration is a 1968 print of the same name by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. This print also provided inspiration for Herzog & de Meuron, who are the Swiss architects who designed the Tokyo Prada store, a glamorous, seven-story glass building in Tokyo’s Aoyama district. Several of the paintings in the show are based upon the early blueprints and models of the building, as well as the building under construction.

Artist Ledelle Moe was born in Durban, South Africa in 1971. She studied sculpture at the Technikon Natal, which is now part of the Durban University of Technology, and graduated in 1993. She was very active in the local art community in Durban and is a the founding member of the FLAT Gallery, an artist initiative and alternative space in Durban. In 1994, a travel grant brought her to the United States to study at Virginia Commonwealth University. Though she currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, she frequently returns to the land of her birth to create art. Over the past year, she has also traveled to India, Botswana, Cape Town and the Karoo, in South Africa. As a token of remembrance of her journey, Ledelle has collected a sample of earth from each of those locations and has embedded those into a series of cement carvings on display with this exhibition. Her statue, “Displacements,” for her represents a piece that is both substantial, yet temporary. The work is 10’x4’ and is quite solid, yet, as it can be moved from one location to another, it also seems to represent something that is fleeting. Moe’s large-scale sculptures of concrete and steel can best be described as both anthropomorphic and human and like the temporary nature of living objects such as people, the artist seems fascinated by things that are technically “impermanent.” To infuse an element of humanity into her works, the artist often will rub motor oil onto the surface which gives it a hide or skin-like quality, yet the lasting result is that it weakens the structural integrity of the piece. According to the artist, this exhibition will seek to explore the paradoxes that arise from structures which are monumental, yet fragile or ever-lasting, yet transient.

For this exhibition entitled, “Even Flow,” three contemporary artists; Patrick Martinez, Aaron De La Cruz and James Roper will be exhibiting original works of art. The show will consist of three to six pieces from each artist and will span the full range of media including paintings, sculpture, neon and site-specific installations amongst other types. According to exhibiting artist Patrick Martinez, “The show’s title speaks on the honesty of touch or style of artists participating in the exhibition. It’s sort of like speaking to a friend you’ve known for years, you can speak honestly to them, there is no filter, and everything that comes from your mouth flows like water. That’s what the title is about. The art just streams from us as all of the artists in the show speak honestly to the viewer, visually.” The intention of this exhibition is to provide a forum for the unique expression of each of the artists and their individual approaches to the creation of contemporary visual art. First, Patrick Martinez’s work primarily consists of lush and colorful paintings as well as distinct neon and sculptural works. Since his youth, he has been heavily influenced by the art of graffiti and it can be said that elements of graffiti still influence his art today. Secondly, Aaron De La Cruz creates works that plunge into phases of graffiti, illustration and design, often creating a tension from the strict structure of his unplanned marks. Meanwhile, British artist James Roper creates mixed media pieces that are filled with vivid colors, movement and the inspiration he derives from his surroundings. In many ways, Roper cobbles together images from a variety of sources to create a uniform, yet visually exciting work of art. This exhibition marks the first time all three artists have exhibited together.

The artists in this show will use painting as a framework by which public information such as history, media and even figures of speech can be used and misused as artistic content and even points of reference. By examining art derived in this way, the viewer is forced to consider the work as it relates to the viewer him or herself. By taking something so familiar, filtering it, deconstructing it and reassembling it, the artist creates a visual equivalent of “white noise.”

Without an audience, a wrestling match is basically just a few grown men pretending to battle while wearing spandex. Therefore, The elaborate entrance of Chad Diety fully utilizes its audience to guide and create the show. Called upon to cheer, boo, side against and react to the action, the audience contributes to the action while getting an inside perspective of the wrestling industry, which is not really a sport. It’s sports entertainment. From the moment a wrestler steps into the ring, he or she, whether villain or hero, already knows the outcome of that match. Mace plays the ever-important role of “jobber” for The Wrestling. a Jobber must cleanly lose a match and according to Mace, that’s a lot harder than it looks. Mace serves as the audience’s tour-guide through this unique production; guiding the audience through world of professional wrestling, exposing its elaborate plotlines and revealing the dramatic political conflicts. Often referred to as “The New Gershwin Musical Comedy,” this musical play was inspired by Ira and George Gershwin’s 1930 musical comedy, “Girl Crazy.” In 1992, the play won a Tony award for Best Musical. The play ran for four years on Broadway and for three years in London. The story follows Bobby Child, the golden-hearted son of a wealthy New York banking family. all Bobby wants in the world is to dance on Broadway, but his forceful mother and wealthy fiancé want an entirely different future for Bobby. he escapes to Deadrock, Nevada where he is supposed to foreclose on a ramshackle theater. his plans to foreclose are soon thwarted however, when he meets Polly Baker, the daughter of Deadrock’s theater owner, and falls madly in love with her. Unfortunately, Polly has caught wind of a wealthy bank owner coming to close her daddy’s theater and she is looking for Bobby Child so she can kill him! Bobby concocts a wild scheme to put on a musical production which will allow him to dance his dream, win Polly’s affections and save the theater in the process. he impersonates Bela Zangler, the theatrical producer from New York who produces the famous Zangler Follies. everything seems to be going perfectly until Bobby’s fiancé, his mother and the real Zangler suddenly appear, threatening to expose Bobby and his charade. Though the musical has enjoyed mass critical acclaim, it nearly didn’t happen. Ken Ludwig almost turned down the offer to write the play. When he first read Girl Crazy’s vintage script, he saw a series of trite stereotypes and a flimsy plot. hounded by a producer named roger horchow, Ludwig agreed to write the show only if he could create an entirely new musical from scratch.

It was written in early Victorian era Britain around the time old traditions were being revived with nostalgia and new traditions, such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were first being introduced. It is believed that Dickens wrote the tale based upon his experiences from his own childhood and his sympathy for the poor, especially around the holiday season.

When guests arrive, they will be asked to write the names of loved ones who have lost their lives to breast can-cer on white ribbons. Those ribbons will be used to create a special memo-rial flag that will be raised during the ceremony. Public cheering stations will be located at Creekside Baptist Church and Seventh Day Adventist Church in Richardson, Nuestra Drive and Forest Lane in Dallas, Noel Road in Dallas, Bank of America on Preston Road in Dallas and in the Historic West End in Dallas. Volunteers are being asked to assist with the opening and closing cer-emonies. Taking place in 14 cities in the USA, the 3-Day raises millions of dollars for breast cancer research, education, and community health programs. The Komen 3-Day supports its participants before the event by providing coaches, training assistance, fundraising advice and a personal fundraising webpage. The first concept for a walk such as this was created in 1998 by Dan Pallotta and Pallotta TeamWorks, benefitting the Avon Foundation. Palotta’s company has created many such events, includ-ing: AIDSRides, the African AIDS Trek, and the original Out of the Darkness suicide prevention overnight event. This event is taking place in 14 cities across the USA. The net proceeds fund breast cancer research, education, and com-munity outreach programs. Since its inception, the 3-day has raised over $82 Million.
