The City of Virginia Beach Arts & Humanities Commission selected Tom and Juanita

Felton as the recipients of the 2017 Champion for the Arts Award. As well-respected

philanthropists, arts administrator, board members and educators, Tom and Juanita Felton have

been ardent supporters of the arts in Virginia Beach and throughout Hampton Roads for many

years. They provided the funding to commission Lin Emery to create the Wings sculpture in front

of the Sandler Center. Through their volunteer work in all facets of the arts, especially with the

Virginia Beach Arts & Humanities Commission, they have cultivated and strengthened the

cultural life of our region in immeasurable ways.

The idea for the award was generated through the

development of the City’s first-ever strategic plan

for the arts, Virginia Beach Arts Plan 2030, to

recognize those community members dedicated

to the furtherance of the arts in Virginia Beach.

Award recipients’ names will be etched in brick

and displayed in the Champion for the Arts path

in front of the Sandler Center for the Performing

Arts, near the intersection of Commerce and

Market streets.

L-R: Mayor Sessoms, Laura Nguyen (A&H Commission member), Juanita Felton (award recipient), Carolyn Garrett (A&H chair), Councilmember Ben Davenport.

A team from the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) traveled to Washington, D.C. this

week to participate in U.S. Travel Association’s International Pow Wow (IPW). The

conference theme this year was “Bringing the World to America,” and with that, the Virginia

Beach team used their collective creativity by incorporating something our city is known for –

amazing sand sculptures – into the design of their space within the marketplace.

IPW is the travel industry's premier international marketplace and the largest generator of travel

to the United States. In just three days of intensive pre-scheduled business appointments, more

than 1,000 U.S. travel organizations from every region of the USA (representing all industry

category components), and more than 1,300 international and domestic buyers from more than

70 countries conduct business negotiations that result in the generation of more than $4.7 billion

in future U.S. travel. At IPW, buyers and sellers are able to conduct business that otherwise

would be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department hosted the Annual VBFD Explorer Post #343 Day

Camp on Saturday, June 3, at the Fire Training Center. The explorer post is a BSA Learning for

Life program for youth ages 14 to 21 who would like to explore a career in firefighting.

Participants rotated through evolutions that included vehicle extraction, fire attack, search and

rescue, ladder operations and more, including a “mock structure fire” call at the burn building,

instructed and supervised by VBFD.

This year’s camp included explorers from the VBFD, Virginia

Beach EMS, the City of Norfolk, and James City County. The

training evolutions executed are consistent with standard

practices for firefighting training as set forth by the National

Fire Protection Association as well as the International Fire

Service Training Association.
