City Manager’s Update
5 Awesome Things About Virginia Beach You Probably Didn’t Know (Or Maybe You Did!)
• 3-D PRINTING: The Virginia Beach Public Library has two 3-D printers that are used to
provide classes to the public. Although no classes are currently available this fall, be sure to check the online calendar periodically for upcoming classes.
• ACCESSIBILITY: Accessibility ramps from the Virginia Beach Boardwalk to the beach are available at every block, and 8-foot wooden walkways that reach the water's edge are located at 8th, 17th, 24th and 30th streets. The City of Virginia Beach provides all terrain wheelchairs for beach goers with disabilities that are ready to roll on the oceanfront. Although currently not available, they can be found on the sand in a storage container on 24th and 17th streets at the bottom of the beach ramps from Memorial Day to Labor Day. These wheelchairs are free and open to the public, but there is a limited supply.
• PARKING FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: State law allows anyone with a handicapped placard or license plate to park at a metered parking spot for free for up to 4 hours.
• PUBLIC SCHOOLS: All Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) high schools have made The Washington Post’s “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list. This annual list identifies schools that have done the best job in persuading average students to take college-level courses and tests. This year, 2,370 schools nationwide earned placement on the list. This is just 11 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public schools considered. Of the seven school divisions in Hampton Roads, VBCPS is the only one to have all of its high schools make the list; 11 of the 16 high schools in the region that were honored are in VB.

The City of Virginia Beach has been designated as a Certified Local Government by the
National Park Service, only the 35th
Virginia community to receive this designation. This
certification means Virginia Beach has established a sound historic preservation program and
institutes a partnership between the city, the State Historic Preservation Office and the federal
historic preservation program.
The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center (ACAC) had their annual surprise
inspection by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of the
State Veterinarian and was found to be 100% compliant in all areas of inspection. The ACAC
has been fully compliant in each annual inspection since moving to the Birdneck Road facility in
December 2011.
The shelter’s team has worked diligently to increase its live release
rate (LRR) over the years and achieved an overall LRR of 75% in
2015. The ACAC is a leader among the area’s municipal animal
shelters, impounds approximately 7,000 animals annually and is
open six days a week for adoptions. To see adoptable animals and
upcoming events from the ACAC, follow their Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/VBAnimalCareandAdoptionCenter.
The Sept. 28 meeting of the Online Home Sharing Economy Ad Hoc Committee, previously scheduled at
the Virginia Beach Convention Center, has been moved to the City Council chamber at City Hall and will
start at 6 p.m. The committee is expected to finalize its policy recommendations at the meeting.
Residents can also share their thoughts online at the city-sponsored forum, Virtual
Town Hall, at www.VBgov.com/virtualtownhall. To date, more than 200 people
have left comments at the forum. For more information, contact Assistant to the City Manager Bob Matthias at

Fire Chief Steve Cover was
invited to address a group of
Chief Petty Officer Selectees from
the USS EAKHarry S. Truman at
a 9/11 event two days before the
15th
anniversary of the attacks on
the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon, and the loss of Flight
93 in Pennsylvania.
Chief Cover, who responded to
the attack on the Pentagon along
with other members of the Virginia Task Force 2 Urban Search and Rescue team, described the
memories from that day and spoke of the close partnership between our military and the nation’s
first responders. The opportunity to speak to the sailors at Norfolk Naval Shipyard reinforces the
relationship between the Virginia Beach Fire Department and the US Navy.
More than 100 residents attended Wednesday evening’s (Sept. 14) Town Hall meeting in
Centerville hosted by Councilmember Bob Dyer. City staff provided briefings on roadway and
stormwater projects (Phil Davenport), parks and recreation facilities (Michael Kalvort), public
safety issues (VBPD Capt. Tony Yarbrough),
and Human Services’ strategic planning process
(Dannette Smith). Attendees also heard from
RJ Nutter on plans for a Royal Farms store on
Kempsville Road and from Ed Hewitt on plans
for the Farmhouse Brewing Company on
Kempsville Road near Centerville Turnpike. A
number of City staff attended as resources,
including Deputy City Managers Tom Leahy
and Ken Chandler, Fire Chief Steve Cover,
Planning Director Barry Frankenfield,
Emergency Management Director Erin
Sutton and ECCS Director Stephen
Williams.
Solid Waste crews have already collected more than 2,100 tons
of yard debris. The normal amount this time of year is about a
quarter of that. While the sheer volume of debris has crews
running a couple of days behind their normal schedule, they
expect to work overtime Saturday and maybe Monday to get
caught up. Collecting yard debris is an intensely physical job
and our crews are doing a terrific job.
