There will be free coffee tastings, coffee roasting demonstrations, nitro coffee and bagged coffee for sale at the Grand Opening Celebration. Their roastery is located at 325 Library Street Hopewell, VA 23860. Legacy Roasting Company started as a small venture, working out of owner, Larry Hancock’s parent’s garage. Their initial coffee roasting equipment included a grill purchased from Craigslist, and was powered by a Chevy windshield wiper motor. After attending countless events in the Richmond area, and becoming a regionally-known roaster, Legacy was able to purchase better equipment and eventually move into their own storefront. Legacy Roasting Company has vended at multiple events in Downtown Hopewell, including the farmer’s markets, the Harvest Festival, Light Up the Night and the Third Thursday Marketplace events. Many Hopewell citizens are familiar with Legacy Roasting and are excited to see them call Hopewell home. Hancock, “is excited to be a part of this small-town vibe,” so much so he is going to create a “Wonder City” coffee blend. This blend will be available for purchase in the roastery. Hopewell natives will be familiar with the building that houses the roastery, as it has been in the downtown district since the 1920s and previously housed Victoria’s Attic. Hancock has opted to keep the tin ceiling in the building, as well as expose the brick walls. He hopes to find a muralist to paint a mural that tells the legacy of the Wonder City in the main tasting room. The Hopewell Downtown Partnership (HDP) worked to sell the property housing Legacy Roasting Company to a new owner who has invested over $100,000 fully rehabbing the space. The HDP also recruited Legacy to one of the four storefronts in the building. “We are excited to have Legacy open Downtown,” says Stacey Henderson, Marketing and Events Director at the Hopewell Downtown Partnership. “We are trying to create a ‘maker downtown,’ where people can come into a business and see the product they are about to purchase being produced. We’re excited to add Legacy Coffee Roasting to our experiential retail segment in our Downtown district.” Please visit Legacy Roasting Company’s Facebook page for more information about the Grand Opening event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2033933273536768/. COMMUNITY NEWS AND SERVICES

Hopewell Awarded VDOT Transportation

Alternatives Grant Project

The City of Hopewell received notification last week that its VDOT Transportation

Alternatives Set-Aside Program (TAP) submitted in November 2017 received the

third highest score out of 21 applications in the Richmond District and will be

awarded in the fall of 2018.

The TA Set-Aside Program is intended to help local sponsors fund community

based projects that expand non-motorized travel choices and enhance the

transportation experience by improving the cultural, historical and environmental

aspects of the transportation infrastructure. The program does not fund traditional

roadway projects or provide maintenance for these facilities. Instead it focuses on

providing pedestrian and bicycle facilities, community improvements and

mitigating the negative impacts of the highway system.

Hopewell focused its application on connecting its neighborhoods to the downtown

and riverfront. This project will connect two shared-use paths, four schools, six

parks, and downtown destinations to a new city-wide network of bicycle routes.

This project, spanning 65,794 linear feet, intends to increase accessibility, encourage

and outdoor activity, and more safely connect neighborhoods to destinations.

The total project cost is estimated at $949,579 with an 80% reimbursement match

from the VDOT TA Set-Aside Program. Once the agreement between the City and

VDOT is finalized, preliminary engineering will commence with construction

scheduled to start in spring 2019.
