Segovia is a beautiful city standing on a rockyoutcrop between the Eresma and Clamoresrivers one thousand meters (3,300 feet) above

sea level and twelve kilometers (7 miles) from theSierra de Guadarrama. Capital of the province of the same name,Segovia's livelihood relies on the exploitation of its livestock, forests, andagricultural resources, in addition to the art of good eating. The best route from Madrid is by way of Autovía A–6, through theGuadarrama tunnel that cuts through the mountains of the SistemaCentral. Afterwards, a right turn on the N–603 and a short distancefurther will take you to the city; a total of 90 kilometers (56 miles) fromthe capital of Spain. Its proximity to high mountains makes Segovia a place with a cold butinvigorating climate. Freezing temperatures are common during thelengthy winter season. This, in turn, favors the exuberance of nature, proliferation of forests, streams, and landscapes of great beauty. Hotelsare perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions and are intent on makingthe visitor's stay as comfortable as possible.Segovia has been given the nickname of the Stone Ship. This is becausethe profile of the Alcázar castle perched on the rocks resembles the prowof a ship while the Cathedral tower serves as the mast. Lyricism aside,Segovia is one of the richest cities in Spain for monuments, as well ashistorical and cultural traditions. The UNESCO acknowledged this in1985 by declaring it a World Heritage City.

Historical Background

Originally a series of villages, it was conquered by theRomans in the first century and became a militaryemporium. At the fall of the Roman Empire, peoplesfrom the North of Europe settled here until they wereoverpowered by the Arabs. While under Arabdomination, Segovia became capital of various Moorish

kingdoms. In 1088, Segovia wasconquered by Alfonso VI,king of Castile, initiating aperiod of politicalimportance and becamethe residence of the courtof the Trastámara dynasty, seat of a bishop, and aprosperous trading centerwith northern Europe dueto its wealth of livestockand burgeoning textileindustry.During this period, themajority of the numerousRomanesque monumentswere built, making

Segovia the city center with the largest number ofRomanesque constructions in all of Europe. In the 15thcentury, Segovia rose to prominence with theTrastámaras, becoming the center of the royal court. In1474, and as the culminating point of this era, Isabellathe Catholic was proclaimed queen of the kingdom ofCastile in the Church of San Miguel. When Charles V came to the throne with his newimperial government, Segovia refused to admit the lossof its preeminence and headed the uprising known asthe Revolt of the Comuneros and was defeated in 1521.The city was then relegated to a secondary rolepolitically but maintained its economic power centeredaround textile manufacturing, reaching its peak duringthe 16th century. In the 17th century, the textile industry collapsed, destroying with it much of the city's activity. In the 18thcentury, it regained some of its splendor with theBourbon monarchs, primarily with the building of thestately palaces at La Granja and Riofrío.

work of exceptional beauty.Following the Aqueduct inleaving the walled sector,we can detour on thestreet called Calle OchoaOndátegui until reachingPlaza de San Justo wherewe find the Church of SanJusto (4). A somber 12thcentury church, it wasbuilt in honor of the figureof Christ known as Cristode los Gascones and housesexceptional Romanesquefrescos in the interior. We take Calle de Ruiz deAlda returning towards theAqueduct; upon arriving at the Plaza de Díaz Sanz, the perspective makes theRoman constructionresemble a gigantic wall.In the same Plaza, we findthe Artillery Academy, aformer Franciscan convent.Further along, at thebeginning of theAqueduct, we turn to theright next to the walls ofthe convent of Santa Rita, and we take Calle de SanAntonio which leads us to

the Monastery of SanAntonio el Real (5). Themonastery, former summerresidence of king EnriqueIV, has the best Mudejarcoffered ceiling inSegovia, some Flemishpaintings from the 15thcentury, furniture, books, clothing and sculpturefrom the period.

When itwas built, it was separatedfrom the rest of the city bywalls and gates but onlyone remains, La Claustra, situated on the neighboringstreet of Calle Velarde. At the end of the CalleDaoiz, continuation ofMarqués del Arco, wecome to the Alcázar (14),preceded by the gardensof Queen VictoriaEugenia, a green oasiswhere the Old Cathedralonce stood. To the left, wefind the Casa de laQuímica, in which LouisProust formulated hisfamous laws. The majestic fortress isstrategically positioned atthe confluence of theEresma and Clamoresrivers, and at first glance,

we focus on the impressivetower of Juan II, 80 meters(260 feet) high with 12turrets on the upper part, the tower of Alfonso X theWise to the north, and thespectacular defensivemoat. In the interior, wediscover the courtyardscalled Patio de Armas andPatio del Reloj; the Hall ofKings for a frieze featuringdifferent monarchs, theThrone Room, Hall of theArched Windows, and theChimney Room, to cite afew. We can also visit therooms dedicated to theRoyal Artillery Academy, and others where diversemilitary objects are exhibited. We now take the RondaDon Juan II until a smallstreet to our right, almosta little square, takes us tothe Casa del Sol (15).
