Imposing New Race Control Tower UnveiledCompleted in just 7 months, and reflecting the unmistakable yellow and black Armco barriers synonymous with the Macau Grand Prix in design, the impressive new Race Control Tower was ready for action in time for its inauguration on November 7, officiated by Mr. Cheong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau Government and President of the Macau Grand Prix Committee, and

Engineer João Manuel Costa Antunes, Coordinator of the Macau Grand Prix Committee.

Traditional firecrackers and a Lion Dance ensured the Race Control Tower – and all those who work at the very nerve centre of the event – were assured good fortune throughout the Grand Prix.

The CountdownNever before in its 60-year history had a Macau Grand Prix been promoted more widely or with more vigor, spreading the message far and wide, as well as throughout Macau. Promotional campaigns enlisted the talents of residents, with a poster and theme song competition producing a smart, state-of-the-art graphic and a catchy theme song ‘Number One’, which became the Grand Prix anthem throughout the event.

As anticipation grew amongst residents and visitors alike, a traditional ‘Bai Sun’ blessing, to bring good fortune to the event, was held and an official opening ceremony at the Tap Seac Square Supercar and Road Sport Show was honoured with the attendance of Dr. Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of Macau.

Close UpVisitors and residents alike were able to get a close-up look at some of the fantastic Macau Grand Prix GT and Road Sport cars and Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix machinery ahead of the races at shows in Tap Seac and Friendship Squares, as well as at a stunning array of classic cars and motorcycles at a special exhibition at the Venetian Macao.

The Grand Prix’s youngest fans meet the competitors

City-Wide CelebrationsThroughout the month, a special Macau Grand Prix exhibition showcasing the historical and contemporary elements of the event was on display in schools and hotels right across the SAR. The exhibition drew the attention of the very youngest Grand Prix fans, students, hotel guests and staff, not to mention the competitors themselves!

For the next generation of Grand Prix fans, a beautifully designed board game and game card was produced and distributed to all kindergarten and primary schools in the city.

As the second weekend drew closer, the drivers and riders from the three headline races met with local children at the classic car exhibition, signing posters and flags for their excited tiny fans.

During the entire Grand Prix, Macau residents and visitors could keep track of all the thrills and spills on the Guia Circuit via giant TV screens around town.

Mourato in the annual shoot-out between the neighbouring SARs, the Hotel Fortuna MAC/HKG Interport Race.

The man dubbed ‘Mr. Macau’, Edoardo Mortara, took his 5th successive win at Macau, this time taking victory in the Audi R8 LMS Cup ahead of Macau’s André Couto, while 16-year-old Akash Nandy of Malaysia will be a face to watch for in future after he won the junior single seater Formula Masters China Series. Italy’s Max Wiser triumphed as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series made its Macau debut, and in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, newly-crowned champion Earl Bamber beat superstar guest driver and nine-time FIA World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb to stand atop the winners’ podium.

The legendary Theodore Racing, the eponymous team of the late Teddy Yip, made a triumphant return to Macau when Alex Lynn won the Star River • Windsor Arch Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix with his Prema-run car. The Briton drove a superb race, to take the flag ahead of 2012 winner, Portugal’s António Félix da Costa.

The two final rounds of the 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship saw newly-crowned champion Yvan Muller take victory in Race 1, with 2012 champion Rob Huff taking his 6th Guia Circuit win in Race 2.

‘Mr. Macau’ Edoardo Mortara was back in action for the City of Dreams Macau GT Cup, storming to a 6th consecutive victory at Macau ahead of Danny Watts, who put on a thrilling charge from 8th on the grid.

A dazzling line-up of former stars of the Guia Circuit returned to Macau for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and none had lost an ounce of their competitive drive in the intervening years. After an epic battle, three time Guia Race winner and

The Star River • Windsor Arch Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix – 47th Edition was as inspirational as it was emotional after Briton Ian Hutchinson triumphed over injury to take victory on his return to competition, beating no lesser adversary than eight-time Macau champion Michael Rutter, the most successful rider in the history of the event.

FIA WTCC race winner at Macau Duncan Huisman took the honours ahead of fellow touring car great Nicola Larini and 2006 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix winner Mike Conway.

Macau took the victory in the Suncity Group Macau Road Sport Challenge thanks to local driver Sun Tit Fan, while Guia Circuit veteran – on both two wheels as well as four – Charoensukhawatana Nattavude won an eventful race from Macau’s Ho Hon Keong and his own daughter Tanchanok in the Cotai Strip Resorts Lotus Greater China Race.

Emanuele Pirro, 1991 and 1992 Guia Race Winner“I enjoyed very much the whole week but, above all, driving again in this marvellous circuit. I hadn’t been back since 1993 and I found Macau being a different world. Fortunately, though, the circuit has stayed unchanged. Through the last three decades of my career I have witnessed the modification of so many beautiful racetracks, all in the direction of improving safety, but also in losing their personality and their challenges.

You made a very good job in increasing safety as much as possible without altering the beautiful layout of the track and the great difficulties that make it so special.

It was a great pleasure to find out that very many fans still remember me; throughout the weekend I have signed hundreds of autograph and model cars. Great!

The Macau GP is a world class and yet unique event, I will be glad and happy to come back at the next available opportunity.

Your kindness, hospitality and passion have been well appreciated and a huge boost for all of us. I wish to the Macau GP another 60 years of great success!”

Stefan Johansson, 1984 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Runner-Up“It was 25 years ago when I last visited and raced in the Macau GP. What a transformation of the city and also the race.

The Macau GP is now a world class event, equal in my opinion to the classics like Le Mans 24 hours, Monaco GP and the Indianapolis 500. The track is arguably the best in the world, it combines all the elements a great racing driver craves and sadly most tracks in the world have been so sanitized that the challenge has gone away and they

What they said…

Jean Todt, President, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile“I think it has been a very exciting first experience in this beautiful Macau venue.”

David Brabham, 1989 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Winner“People have asked me recently how I enjoyed Macau this year and as soon as they said it a smile lights up on my face. That smile is bright because I so enjoyed myself not only racing around the Macau GP track, which is the best street track in the world, but also the people

who put so much time, money and effort into this great event. This is what makes this race so special, the passion of the committee and everyone who is involved in making sure the race goes ahead smoothly, plus all the teams and drivers who all love competing there. The fans that turn up to watch year on year, also should be mentioned because it would not be the same without them.

This event holds a special place in the motorsport calendar every year and I am sure this will continue for a very long time.

Thank you Macau, I will be back.”

17

Earl Bamber, 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion“Macau really is the best circuit I’ve ever been to in my life!”

Julian Bailey, 1989 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Runner-Up“It was wonderful to catch up with old friends. Macau had always been one of my favourite circuits and it was a thrill to drive there again. It was also great to see Macau thriving and am thought it has changed a great deal the circuit and the atmosphere is the same – electric.

The event was very well organised and we all felt very welcome and well looked after. I hope to be back again soon. Thanks to everyone for your hospitality and organisation.”

are now mainly technical tracks that require a completely different set of skills compared to what is required at a place like Macau.

The combination of low, medium and high speed corners and the section on the top of the hill where you need a lot of rhythm and feel makes it totally unique to any other track in the world.

I would relish the opportunity to come back and race there again if the opportunity will ever arise.”

Steve Soper, 1997 Guia Race Winner“My visit to Macau was a great surprise as the last time I raced there was 12 years ago. Macau has changed so much since then in size and development and is now recognised as a global place with more revenue than Las Vegas, but the Macau race track itself has not changed at all which is fantastic. In my opinion the Macau track is one of the most demanding circuits to race around in the world and winning on this road course is a huge achievement. I am proud to say that I have won and also have the lap record that still stands to this day from the 1997 Guia race. It was a great pleasure to be invited back for the sixtieth anniversary.”

Alex Lynn, 2013 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Winner“It feels fantastic to win – indescribable! It’s fantastic to win the 60th running of the race, and thanks to the organisers and everyone who made this day really special for me.”

Yvan Muller, 2013 FIA World Touring Car Champion“For all of us, Macau is a special track, a special circuit. It’s complicated to set-up and complicated to go fast – a big challenge!

I’m glad to be here for the 60th and hope you have another 60 years.”

Rob Huff, six-time race Macau FIA WTCC Race Winner“It’s a fantastic circuit and the most amazing fans!”

Mike Conway, 2006 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Winner“You forget how good it is here. A lot of fun on every lap. Thank you to everyone for making it what it is.”

André Couto, 2000 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Winner“I’m very happy to be on the podium and bring the trophy to the Macau people. They are my people and this is very, very good for us.”

Sébastien Loeb, nine-time FIA World Rally Champion“It’s a really special track with a lot of fast places and also some very twisty and narrow places, so it’s a bit of everything.”

Nobuhide Tachi, 1974 and 1975 Guia Race Winner“The Macau Grand Prix is a part of my life. For 17 years, from 1971 to 1986, I participated in the Guia Race. Then, for 22 years, from 1991 to 2013, I have taken part as a team boss in the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix. The Grand Prix has stayed close to me in the course of my life, and in Japan I was known by a very rare title – “Macau Tiger”.

Over this long association with the Grand Prix, the 1976 race was my most memorable. After a two-year winning streak in the Guia Race, in 1974 and in 1975, I was confident to make it three in a row. However, I was defeated by Mr. Herb Adamczyk from Germany who was 25 seconds

Alvaro Mourato“A Macau driver has won the N2000 MAC/HKG Interport Race so many times, so I wished to take the victory this year for Macau. However, the result was is little unfortunate. In the closing stages of the race, I knew

I was the only Macau resident in a position to fight for the podium, so I tried my best!”

faster than me to win by a big gap, and I could only follow in second place. In 1974, we also competed for the win and I put up a fierce battle, but I won by only one second. We all knew he was a fast driver but, with such a large gap, it was frustrating for me.

That failure brought me great frustration, and after the race I kept saying to myself: “Second place is as good as coming last – if you don’t win the race, you haven’t done a good job”. And now that has become the motto which I and my team and drivers share.

This year, I had the opportunity to be able to race again on the Guia Circuit after 27 years, and I saw that the scenery is very different from years ago, but challenging track has not changed.

Remembering the past, clenching the steering wheel, pressing the accelerator, the engine revving, the scenery flashing by, the “Macau Tiger’s” blood started to boil. Mentally, although not physically, I was completely back to 27 years ago. More precisely, I automatically pressed right down on the accelerator and then seeing the corner in front of me, I slammed on the brakes, but with some lapse between the thought and the action. After five laps, just as I was getting used to it, my wrist began to feel weak. That is the physical decline of age, while the increasing tension was resulting in fatigue.

This cannot be an excuse, but I qualified last and then was 17th in the race. Twenty-seven years have passed and the “Macau Tiger” has become the “Macau Cat”. However, to be able to participate in the Macau Grand Prix again has made the “Macau Cat” so very happy. From this Macau Grand Prix, this name may begin to spread.”

Keisuke Kunimoto, 2008 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix Winner“Macau GP is a very special event for me. I participated in the Macau GP in 2008. It was my first and last time racing in Macau. My first impression of the Macau GP was amazing. When I came back to Macau GP this year, I felt the same as before. At the same time it brought back my wonderful memory of this event.

If I will have any opportunity like this time, I’m sure that I will be back. Thank you very much for inviting me to this special event of 60th anniversary Macau GP.”

19

Kiyoshi Misaki, 3rd 1971 Macau Grand Prix“I raced in the 1971 Macau Grand Prix and it was my first time to race overseas. The only thought in my mind then was to finish the race. After that I started to think, what will happen if I race in Macau again and how will I feel? For me, the Macau Grand Prix is special. I was disappointed not to have raced in Macau since 1989, so I had been looking forward to racing there again. I was so happy to be back on the Guia Circuit.

I used to race at tracks in Europe and Japan, but Macau is different and unforgettable. The track is close to the residential area, very challengeable and inspiring for drivers.

For me, the Macau Grand Prix is once-in-a-lifetime experience and I wish it well for the future.”

Naoki Nagasaka, 4th 1987 Guia Race“I am 60 years old and had not raced since I retired. This opportunity has ignited my passion again for my 17-year racing career.

It was 25 years ago that I last raced at Macau, and when I received the opportunity to race here again I felt very excited, although I was a little daunted by the strong line-up!

My thanks to the Macau Grand Prix Committee for inviting me to the Scirocco R China Masters Challenge, and for all the staff, mechanics and my colleagues hard work.”

Tomohiko Tsutsumi, 1972 Macau Grand Prix, 1980’s Guia Race“Macau is one of the circuits I respect and find challenging the most. Macau has changed significantly in the last 24 years and, as well as a vibrant city that never sleeps, has countless casino hotel buildings and has now become the world’s most popular, lively city. Macau is a blend of Eastern and Western cultures and has become even more attractive.

The city of Macau is much more modern than the last time I was there, and the circuit and facilities have a completely new look, but I was very pleased that the Guia Circuit is basically unchanged, a very memorable race track.

For me, the Macau Grand Prix being part of my 50 years of my life is a very precious gift, and this will not be the end of it. We will challenge again in Macau and would like to come back next year. We love the Macau Grand Prix! Thanks Macau!”

Macau Grand Prix Committee Honoured with Medal of Merit – Tourism

Following the successful completion of the 60th celebrations, the Macau Grand Prix Committee (MGPC) was honoured by the Government of the Macau SAR with the Medal of Merit – Tourism in recognition of its work in organising, promoting and coordinating all aspects of the event, which has become an integral part of the culture of the city and a strong international brand. Created in December 2001 at the behest of the Chief Executive, the Medal recognises the dedication and commitment of the MGPC in meeting the myriad organisational demands and ensuring the continued success of what has become a major annual event, contributing much towards elevating the profile of Macau and its transformation into a major international tourism and leisure destination.
