COVINGTON PARKS & RECREATION

Your Community ParkHave you noticed the big changes happening at Covington Community Park on the corner of 180th Ave SE and SE 240th St? This park has been under construction over the past year, but will soon be open with a lot of exciting new features!

Perhaps most exciting, at least for the kids, is the addition of an amazing playground with a zipkrooz, supernova and spacenet – just to name a few of the cool play features. There is an outdoor fitness gym with equipment and more trails in the woodland area. A new tennis court has been added and can be used as a pickle ball court, but you do have to bring your own pickle ball net.

The Margaret Harto Pavilion is the perfect addition for generations of summer concerts and three new picnic shelters can be reserved starting in 2019. There are restrooms, a concessions building, benches, picnic tables, sidewalks and those large circle things (what are those?). Visiting the park will be easier, too, with over 100 new parking stalls, including an electric vehicle charging station, and a new turnaround for the existing parking lot off of SE 240th.

Construction will wrap up by the end of summer and the ribbon cutting is planned for August 17, just before the city’s final concert of the summer performed by Recess Monkey (more info at www.covingtonwa.gov/parks). While construction will soon be complete, it will take some time before grasses and plants grow enough to become established, so parts of the park will remain closed or restricted until that time.

Funding summary for Covington Community Park Phase 2: $7,000,000 (80% of the project) is funded by the WA Department of Commerce (the Taxpayers of Washington State); $704,000 (8%) is funded by the City of Covington; $500,000 (6%) is funded by the federal Land Water and Conservation Fund program; $500,000 (6%) is funded by the WA Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program; $65,000 (1%) is funded by King County; $30,688 (<1%) is funded by King Conservation District; and $0 (0%) of nongovernmental sources are funding this project.

New picnic shelters are being added to Covington Community Park and can be reserved starting in 2019.
