“I have now lost count of the amount of Writer Days we have had at COLAHH but this was definitely the best: fantastic writers, supportive staff and some excellent work produced. The LRC also was a perfect place for performance work in the pm.” Neal Zetter. “I had fun at the workshop working with the kids from local primary schools again. These workshops always help me improve my writing skills.” Nidhi

Year 7 Islington Reading Road Map Is a literacy initiative to enhance reading for pleasure, make reading more meaningful and enjoyable and strengthen the ‘real readers’ culture already embedded at COLAHH. Students are very excited about the reading journey ahead and the opportunity to earn and receive the readers programme rewards available.

Carnegie Book Club WHAT IS THE CARNEGIE BOOK MEDAL? The Carnegie Book Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. It was established in 1936, in memory of the great Scottish-born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie (1835 – 1919). Carnegie was a self-made industrialist who made his fortune in steel in the USA. His experience of using a library as a child led him to resolve that “if ever wealth came to me that it should be used to establish free libraries.” I am delighted to share that 40 students have signed up for the Carnegie Book Club again this year! The book club runs from March to June. Watch this space for an update in the Summer Newsletter!

Reading Buddy Programme The Reading Buddy Enrichment Programme continues to promote Reading for Pleasure across the curriculum and offers Year 7 students an opportunity to grow in self-awareness and self-confidence through reading with the Year 10 Reading Buddy Ambassadors. Well done and many thanks to the Year 10 students who have volunteered their time and support to this literacy initiative.

“I spent the award money on manga jigsaw puzzles because I wanted to create an extra lunchtime club in the

LRC.” Joshua

Music News

This has been a busy term in music since our big winter concert which saw over 70 students perform in what was an amazing evening of live music. This term we have had lots of different events going on as well as great progress being made by our young musicians. Year 7 and 8 students have just completed their 2nd round of assessments with the Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST) where they have all performed on their instruments and completed a listening exam. Outside of normal lessons we have had a group of Year 10 students who represented the academy at the City of London Schools Con-cert. This performance was at Milton Court (a professional concert hall in the Barbican/Guildhall), they were amazing and really showed the talents of our singers. Some of these students have also been taking part in a ‘Vocal Leadership’ course and leading sessions with primary students. The GCSE music groups attended a concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra looking at set pieces for the exams and got the chance to see a world-class orchestra at the Southbank Centre. The choir continues to grow with over 60 members now and is now working hard on our production of High School Musical which is tak-ing place in July. We had a choir from the USA visit us this term as they were on tour in London. Our students got the chance to sing with them and talk to them about what school is like the other side of the ocean! Next term we have more exciting events going on with the Year 7’s ‘Together’ day when the whole year group will play as a giant orches-tra, the music residential at the end of the year where 16 students from Year 7 & 8 get to go to Radley College for 4 days and play in an orchestra with students from all the other MiSST Schools and finally there is a trip to the Royal Opera House coming up for a group of lucky students too! If you want to keep up to date with what is happening in the music department then please follow us on twitter: @COLAHH_Music
