Rotary Donates Dictionaries

Members of the Rotary Club recently donated over one hundred dictionaries to fourth graders at C.F. Holliday Elementary School in Moraine. The school is one of five local elementary schools that receive dictionaries from the club every year.

"We told the students that Moraine Rotary stands for service. We had all of the kids look up the word "service" and asked them what acts of service they could perform in their neighborhood, at home and at school to make a positive difference," stated Rotarian Rosie Miller.

April Showers Bring May FlowersSpring is finally here and summer is just around the corner. All of those bitterly cold and snowy days of winter are just a fading distant memory. Spring and summer bring back green grass, trees and flowers. With all this beauty also comes work. Please remember these few property maintenance codes which Moraine has put in place so everyone can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors this summer.

• Grass, all exterior property areas shall be maintained free from weeds, plants, vines, grass or other vegetation in excess of 8 inches in height.

• Parking, all vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas, all parking must be on a hard paved surface such as gravel, blacktop or concrete.

• Outdoor storage is not permitted in residential districts. Such storage items may include, but are not limited to: bicycles, lawn mowers, automotive repair equipment or parts and construction materials.

• Driveways and sidewalks should be kept clean and free of grass and weeds.

• Trees, plants and shrubbery should be kept so it has a clear height of 8 feet above sidewalks and 14 feet above streets. All dead sections should be removed as well as any limbs touching your roof. They can cause damage to your shingles. Bushes and hedges in the front yard must be kept so they do not exceed 4 feet in height and be 3 feet from the lot line.

• Do not place garage sale signs in the right of way or attach them to poles or street signs. They will be removed! Post the days of your sale with the actual dates ie: April 26-28.

• Trash cans must be kept out of view until 24 hours before and after its scheduled pick up. Trash must be placed in approved containers with a lid.

Please remember, keeping your yard well-kept will make our City a more beautiful place for everyone to enjoy this summer. Questions and comments are always welcome; please contact your Building and Zoning Department at 535-1038 or e-mail to [email protected].

Police Division Joins Light Ohio BlueThe Police Division has joined the Light Ohio Blue campaign to show and generate support for law enforcement personnel who protect our communities throughout our great state.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Light Ohio Blue campaign coincides with activities associated to Police Week. This year’s dates are Wednesday, May 8th through Thursday, May 16th.

Businesses and residents in Moraine are encouraged to show their support for law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and those currently serving, both sworn and civilian staff.

How can you help Light Ohio Blue?

• Place a blue bulb on your exterior porch light;

• Wrap blue Christmas lights around your home or business;

• Light up your entire home or business with blue flood lights;

• Place blue ribbons on your mailbox, nearby columns or posts;

• Wear Blue on May 15; and

• Tell your friends, family and neighbors what you’re doing, and post a picture to social media using #LightOhioBlue

Please join us to show support for law enforcement and help light Ohio blue!

Congratulations to the Creeper aka Dave Miller for making The Horror Host Hall of Fame class of 2019!

Dave started the Moraine Playhouse Theater series back in 1988 and has produced over 30 "B" movies. His involvement with the community is unsurpassed and the City is proud of this unique accomplishment.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series, we have episodes of the series on our YouTube channel.

Research, Discover and Uncover Moraine’s HistoryDayton Air Institute

One of Moraine's Historical Markers is Moraine Field which in 1926 became Dayton's first Municipal Airport. The marker is located near Springboro Pike and Northlawn Blvd. just north of the Fuyao Glass America plant. Moraine Field was co-owned by pilot Bernard Whelan who was trained by the Wright Brothers and co-owner Howard Rinehart who test piloted airplanes for the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company located further south on Springboro Pike in Moraine. Moraine Field remained in private hands and served as Dayton's "official airport" until 1928 when airmail service was switched to Wright Field in Dayton.

In June 1929 the Moraine Flying Field became the Dayton Air Institute Inc. where students could enroll in a course for the complete study of aviation with actual flying lessons. A 1929 photo shows the first 40 students who enrolled at the Air Institute.

As the Wright Brothers fame spread, Dayton became a hot bed for pilot training as many schools of aviation sprang up. Vintage magazine ads stated "Take your place in Aviation today", "Learn Flying in Dayton, Ohio where Aviation was Born!" It is unknown how long the Dayton Air Institute was in business in Moraine, but the site was still listed in a 1939 map of Moraine.
