Spring Book Discussion Group A collaboration of White Plains Recreation & Parks and the White Plains Library.Author: Tara Westover Title: Educated: A Memoir

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education. When a brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

WONDERING WHAT MAKES WHITE PLAINS SO BEAUTIFUL?THE FLOWERS THAT BLOOM IN THE SPRING…SUMMER…FALLWhile some of us are shivering with winter’s chill, spring will arrive. It always does. Trees will bud, daffodils will pop up, and tulips will bloom! It’s nature’s way, with a little help from its friends. When the cherry trees bloom, you’ll think you’re in heaven. For over 50 years, the all-volunteer White Plains Beautification Foundation (WPBF) has enhanced our parks and other areas with flowers, shrubs, trees, three street clocks, a carillon, as well as two fountains, a blooming basket, a flagpole, a gazebo and a summerhouse. They are responsible for maintenance of over 60 gardens which they created. Its Adopt-a-Park program allows individuals and businesses to help. Every autumn, WPBF plants thousands of daffodil bulbs, now totaling nearly 100,000. Early bloomers, daffodils are closely followed by a myriad of tulips, and then…cherry blossoms everywhere! What a sight that is!WPBF welcomes volunteers and would love to hear from you. Reach them at wpbf.org. If you haven’t received its annual newsletter, or if you have questions, call president Mary Ann DeRosa at 914-686-8128.
