Fake cigarettes TWENTY-EIGHT members of a ring that was suspected of making and selling fake ciga- rettes stood trial in Longgang District recently. According to the prosecu- tors, the ring headed by Qiu had started making fake cigarettes in two places in Longgang District. The ring was organized and operated in a pyramid structure, as ring members were only connected through linear contacts. TWO more trains and a char- ter flight will be added from Shenzhen to Kashgar in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region this year, according to a press conference on the promo- tion of the tourism industry in Xinjiang’s scenic southwestern prefecture in Shenzhen on Friday. More than 200 people, including government officials and representatives of major travel agencies in Shenzhen and Kashgar, attended the confer- ence. Exotic performances of Tajik folk dance were staged at the conference. The planned charter flight and train trips will bring convenience to Shenzheners who want to visit Xinjiang and boost Kashgar’s tourism industry, sznews.com quoted Song Pei, a Shenzhen official now based in Xinjiang to serve at the general affairs sec- tion aiding the region, as saying in its Sunday report. The first tourism train link- ing Shenzhen and Kashgar was launched last September. Over 500 Shenzhen tourists embarked on their journey to Xinjiang on Sept. 18, 2017, and enjoyed a 16- day Silk Road train tour. Yang Yongqun, deputy director of Shenzhen’s culture, sports and tourism bureau, said Shenzhen, as the city offering aid to Kashgar, has brought signifi- cant revenue to Kashgar’s tour- ism industry in recent years. In the future, according to Yang, the two regions will develop even closer ties in tour- ism and create more opportuni- ties for people from both places to communicate. Song Shu’an, vice mayor of Kashgar, said at the conference that since Shenzhen started aiding Kashgar and Tajik Autonomous County of Taxkor- gan eight years ago, the city has been making tremendous con- tributions to the development of Xinjiang in many respects. A round-table seminar was organized during the confer- ence so representatives from both areas could discuss hot topics, such as whether it is safe to travel to Xinjiang and which parts of the region have the most unique tourism resources. Located at the center of the Silk Road core economic region, Kashgar is a key junc- tion in northwestern China with abundant tourism resources in its unique culture and diverse landscape. (Zhang Qian) City to add flight, trains to Kashgar A MAN surnamed Chen in Long- gang District was fined over 400,000 yuan (US$63,096) for illegally excavating a hillside in Pinghu Subdistrict to build an agritainment resort, SZTV reported yesterday. On the afternoon of May 6, local residents reported the case to the law enforcement team of the subdistrict. While inspecting the site, the team found that large green areas had been destroyed and the ground had been lev- eled for further construction, the report said. The excavation of the hillside formed three steep slopes. A resident said he was afraid that sewage would run everywhere and that the construction would lead to a landslide. The illegal construction proj- ect destroyed more than 1,700 square meters of green space and illegally excavated more than 870 cubic meters of earth and stone. The law enforcement team has issued a notification of administrative penalty to Chen. According to relevant laws and regulations, a penalty of 500 yuan is levied per cubic meter of earth and stone. Therefore, the fine issued to Chen must have totaled more than 400,000 yuan. This is also the first such case at a relatively large scale in the area, said law enforcement offi- cials. The case is under further investigation. In May 2017, more than 30 victims came to Bao’an District Public Security Bureau to report that they had been swindled out of over 50 million yuan by the couple that they could no longer reach. The bureau set up a special team to launch a comprehensive investigation of the case, which involved a large number of vic- tims and a large sum of money. The police gathered evidence in Zhuhai, Shaoguan, Huizhou and Zhongshan cities. The pre- liminary investigation showed that the victims had started making transactions with the suspects as early as 2001. Additionally, each bank account involved in the case had been involved in cross transactions. In early December 2017, the police finally traced down a clue that showed the suspects had probably fled to Xinjiang in northwestern China. The investigation team immediately flew the thousands of miles from Shenzhen to Xinjiang and tracked the suspects from Urumqi, Aksu to Alar. With the assistance of local police, the team finally arrested the suspects at a housing estate in Alar City. The suspects have been charged with illegal fund- raising. (Zhang Yu) 2 punished for illegal houses on Mt. Yangtai PROGRESS has been made in the case of two illegal houses built on Yangtai Mountain as the city’s forest public security sub-bureau has identified two suspects responsible for the illegal structures, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The sub-bureau said Satur- day that it had already imposed administrative punishments on the two suspects identified as Huang and Guo. In addition, the demolition of the two illegal buildings com- menced in late April and has already been completed, accord- ing to the sub-bureau. The structures were located halfway between Makan Village in Nanshan District and the peak of Yangtai Mountain. They were hidden in the forest at an altitude of about 300-400 meters and were rarely visited. A report on Shenzhen TV earlier last month triggered public outcry over the illegal structures, which were probably built six months ago and caused serious damage to the forest on the mountain. Through an investigation police found that both of the structures were built on forest land that should be used to plant trees. Huang and Guo, both owners of orchards on the mountain, were accused of illegally chang- ing the use of the forest land by constructing buildings with- out getting approval from the authority. Huang occupied a 973.4- square-meter lot and Guo 720.1 square meters of forest land. The sub-bureau did not disclose details of the punishments given to the two suspects. According to the regulation protecting forests in China, changing the use of land with- out approval from the authority can lead to a fine of 10 to 30 yuan (US$1.58-4.73) for each square meter and imprisonment of up to seven years based on the extent of damage to the forest.
