Sparked by the recent rape and murder of a 20-year-old Bongiwe Ninini-whose body was found dumped in a drain not far from the Site C shopping centre-the group marched to the Khayelitsha police station. According to march organiser Phindile George, residents were unhappy with the lack of police visibility in their areas. “According to the police demarcation, sec- tion 1, which consists of Thembokhwezi, Site C and some parts of Site B, only have one van that responds to calls,” said George. This is one of the grievances that they ta- bled to the Khayelitsha police. “This march is as a result of many inci- dents of crime in and around our areas, where people are being robbed on the streets and their cars hijacked, homes broken into and at gunpoint, criminals loot their homes, and most of the time maimed or killed,” he explained. “We have been having many meetings, community patrols, and we have come to the conclusion that we need to take to the streets. We need a mobile police station in the ac- cess points to our communities. We are also pleading with police for swift follow-up in cases as we have seen cases go for a long time without being solved, as a re- sult people have lost hope in the police and this has manifested itself.” . In another crime related incident, a 23 year old man was arrested for allegedly fatal- ly shooting another man and also raping his girl friend, in Nkanini, Khayelitsha, on Tuesday. The suspect, who is well known by the family of Thabiso Zitho, 35, the deceased, is said to have broken-into his house in the ear- ly hours of Saturday morning, and the vic- tim dead and then raped the girlfriend. The identity of the girlfriend, 23, who can- not speak properly, was not released as she fears for her life. Nombini Zitho, the mother of the de- ceased, was still traumatised when City Vi- sion visited her house, on Tuesday. Zitho said they were woken-up by resi- dents who told them to rush to their son’s house, which is just metres away from their house, at about 4am. “I suspected that something was not right when I saw a group of residents carrying weapons outside of his (Thabiso) house. They told me that he was shot and killed. I was scared to look at his lifeless body. There was blood on his bed and his body was lying on the floor next to his bed. The girlfriend said she knew one of the suspects. The suspect is also alleged to have stolen Thabiso’s wallet and cell phone. Zitho said they were shocked to hear that the suspect was someone whom Thabiso played soccer with. We all know him. He is one of the youth Thabiso groomed in soccer. He is younger than him, but they grew up together. I feel very bad in a way that I cannot sleep at night. It really terrifies me,” she added. The description of the suspect by the girl- friend helped in tracing him down. Lieutenant Siyabulela Vukubi, communi- cation officer at Harare police station, said the suspect was positively identified. Vukubi said he was due to appear in Khay- elitsha Magistrate’s Court, on Wednesday, on charges of rape and murder. The information regarding the gun that was used was not available. Marius Fransman, ANC provincial lead- er, accompanied ANC Women’s League members to visit Zitho’s family, on Monday. No blaming gamesWhat do losers do? They blame all thetime. They have excuses. “It is not myfault. It is somebody else’s”, they say.I was once like that. I was good atgiving excuses. But these days, I donot.I never, at any time. When things go

against me, as they sometimes do, Itake them in my stride.“Maybe I did put enough effort,” I

say these days. And leave it at that. Idon’t look at it too long. I don’tanalyze it.“It happened, so what? Thats what I

say. There are lots of things that will

happen in one’s life. Some of them arenot your fault. They may be caused byracists.Like what happened to me not so

long ago. I wanted to be taught theropes on salesmanship. We all want tobe coached on one thing or another. And guess what? I was given a

coach from Zimbabwe. That’s a whitecompany giving me somebody fromZim. I just chuckled to myself andsaid, “Let’s wait and see. I wonderwhere it would end.”It ended with the guy saying he will

contact me on a specific date. Henever did. That is how it ended. Andlooking back, I wondered why theygave me a person from Zim in the firstplace. Was it because I was black?

No, I allowed myself to indulge onthat thought. You can’t turn a blindeye on some things. You’ve got to face them. But let

them not linger on forever. They willdamage you.Sooner or later you will be an angry

person. You will blame every whiteperson and say, “Whites are racists!”Which is not true. There are goodwhites. And they are in abundance. But there are some bad apples. That

you can’t help. You’ve got to live withit, just as there are good and badblacks. Some blacks won’t help you. They will make sure you don’t getwhat you want.Does it sound familiar? This is what

I am talking about. There is good andbad everywhere. But let that not holdyou back. When you encountersomething like an obstacle, swallowyour pride.Don’t retaliate. That’s a waste of

time. And energy. See what you cando to get around it to get what youwant. When you want something youwill get it. It depends on how youreact. So I was cool about this Zim episode,

and amused. It showed me how somepeople think, even if they say they are‘progressive.’ I don’t watch what theysay. I watch what they do. And don’tblame. Stay positive.

Ms Eve makesmusic go wild“Give me music and I will make you

dance.”These words emanate from the

lips of Ms Eve, a sensational house deejay, who is set to release her anxiously awaiteddebut single ‘Elixesha Lelakho’ on Friday. This is a day that the women of this coun-

try confirmed their strength andproved thatthe ‘man’s world claim to be untrue. To thisday, women continue to maintain theirunique place in society with the remarkablethings that they do.When growing up, even on the play-

ground, little boys andgirls alreadyhavedif-ferent games they play that bear un-derlyinggender roles that they are expected to playin society.Boys are tough and girls are not, right?

Boysmake the best deejays and girls are bet-ter off dancing right? Wrong both times. If you don’t believe this fact, then you

clearly haven’t heard Ms Eve drop her hyp-notic sounds.Introducing Cape Town’s pride, your next

favourite deejay, Ms Eve will have youmov-ing your feet in ways you never thought younever could. The best part you will not evennotice the fully packed room once the moodis set. That’s what we call theMsEve trance.23 year old Iviwe Mbobosi, affectionately

known as Ms Eve, was born and bred in thesmall town of Paarl. This area is famous forthe Paarl Rock, which is known for its

smooth and flawless appearance, just likethe beats Iviwe drops. This feisty lady dis-covered her passion and love for spinningthe decks at the age of 16.Combine genuine talent, elegance and

tunes, you known that Ms Eve has the cre-dentials to compete with any of the boysclub. Iviwehas graced the stage alonghouse-hold legendary house maestros DJ BlackCoffee, DJ Fresh and Vinny Da Vinci just toname a few.Ms Eve has graced stages of Cape Town’s

Mum and daughter get housedMBONGISENI MASEKO

Life is about to change for a woman andher disabled daughterwho stay at an in-formal settlement in Khayelitsha.

Nomapostile Ginyizembe, 42, and Dunyis-waGinyizembe, 19,who stays inBMSection,Site B, will soonmove-into a house they willcall home.

This comes after Bonginkosi Madikizela,MEC forHumanSettlements, visited the sitewhere the house is being built, in ThokozaStreet on Tuesday.

Thehouse is built inpartnershipwithCor-obrick, the manufacturer, distributor andexporter of bricks and allied building prod-ucts.

Ginyizembe said the recent call she re-ceived informing her that she was going toget the house came as a “nice surprise” toher.

“I am very happy, because it is not easyfor me to stay with my child there.

It becomes a big struggle for me when Ihave to take her to the clinic, because thereis no proper road between the shacks.

Sometime I have to ask my neighbours tolook after her when I have to go somewhere, because I cannot push her wheelchair there.

This is a very good surprise for me. Iwould like to thank the MEC and all thosewho contributed,” Ginyizembe said.

Dunyiswa, who was going to Vukani Spe-cial Care Centre, had to drop-out from theschool, because of the difficulties ofmobilityaround the area.

Madikizela said his department is on themission of prioritising senior citizens anddisabled persons on the housing lists.

“We want to ensure that people who arein such conditions are prioritised.

We need to give another look at young peo-ple who are getting houses while senior citi-zens anddisabledpeople still stay inbadcon-ditions in informal settlements.

In a few days time they (Ginyizembe andDunyiswa) will move-in their house as youcan see the bricks are laid already. I wantto thank all those who came on board tobuild the house,” he said.

Lindelwa Madikane, centre manager atVukani Special Care Centre, said they start-ed advocating for Ginyizembe and Dunyis-wa to get the house few years ago, after theylearnt that the reason she quit school wasthe condition of the informal settlementsthey are living in.

“I cannot describe how I feel to see theirhouse being built.

We have been trying for a number of yearsto get a house for them.

We were so touched after we learnt that

the living conditionswere a factor in her notbeing able to attend school.”

CouncillorMavisMafoko, thanked theDe-partment of Human Settlements and Corob-rick for their effort. “What you did here isvery important. I would like to thank you

and say you must continue doing it to otherpeople who are in need,” Mafoko said.

Siyanda Mapekula, a representative fromCorobrick, said they were “happy to be partof the project” and that this is one of manysuch projects that they get involved in.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, MEC for Human Settlements, laid some bricks during his visit to the site where the house for Nomapostile Ginyizembe, 42,who is seen on the picture pushing Dunyiswa Ginyizembe, 19, is being built, in Khayelitsha, on Tuesday. Heart of Redness on stageA new musical adaptation of Zakes Mda’snovel,Heart of Rednesswill soon be on stageat the Fugard Theatre.

Presented by Cape Town Opera and Mag-net Theatre the production will be per-formed by a multi-talented 15-member castcomprising ofMagnet Theatre andUCTDra-ma School graduates and some of the CapeTown Opera’s youngest members.

They’ll be directed by Mark Fleishmanwith music by Neo Muyanga, movement di-rection by Jennie Reznek and designs byCraig Leo.

Fleishman sayHeart of Redness is difficultto define or package, but that’s exactly whathe wanted. The musical uses elements of op-eratic, choral and traditionalmusic styles totell its story.

Shortlisted for the prestigious Common-wealth Writers Prize, Heart of Rednessspeaks of South African village life againstthe backdrop of a notorious episode from thecountry’s past.

Camugu, who left for America duringapartheid, has returned to Johannesburg.Disillusioned by the problems of the new de-mocracy, he travels to the remote EasternCape where, in the nineteenth century, ateenage prophetess named Nonqawuse com-manded the Xhosa people to kill their cattleand burn their crops, promising that oncethey did so the spirits of their ancestorswould rise and drive the occupying Englishinto the ocean. The production will bestaged at the Fugard Thetare from Wednes-day 19 to Saturday 22 August.

Monday was a day of joy for SiphokaziRululu, 14, who suffers from chronicepilepsy, what with being gifted

with a wheelchair by a local surgeon. This was after community activists Dimo

Seti andXolaniDywili approached themed-ic-who wishes to remain anonymous- to re-lay the plight of the young girl.Seti said they were touched by her suffer-

ing whenever she had to been taken to hos-pital for her check-ups.“We did this as part of our women’s

month activities. The doctor did not hesi-tate to buy the wheelchair when we ap-proached him, but he asked to remain anon-ymous.We want to thank him a lot, because Si-

phokazi really needed the wheelchair. Herfamily will now be able to move heraround,” Seti said.Aunt Nokhanyile Pokolo said the family

was pleased with the donation.“We are very happy, because it was a big

challenge for us to carry her when she hadto go anywhere. Her father (Ayanda Qhara)had to carry her around, and she is soheavy. Thatwas soworrying, because he al-

so also suffers from epilepsy. The wheel-chair is going to be a big relief to us,” Pokolosaid.Rululu senior had to quit work because

of his chronic epilepsy.,His wife Nomveliso Rululu, a restaurant

worker and their youngest daughter, Slin-dokuhle,7, take turns looking after fatheranddaughter, which canbeadaunting task.Vivian Zilo, a community developer and

founder of Iliso Care Society, in the area, al-so donated groceries to theRululu family onthe day.The benevolence also extended to another

destitute woman on the day, as she also re-ceived donations of food and householdstuff that day.She pleaded to remain anonymous. The woman also received a wheelchair,

thanks to the efforts of both Seti andDywili.Zilo said activists have beenmaking a dif-

ference in people’s lives since 2005.“This is our job. To ensure that we come

to help those who are in need.Weare a carrying society.Wewant to con-

tribute in making positive changes in thelives of residents,” Zilo said. Zilo also plead-ed with businesses in the area to come onboard and assist where they can.

For whom the road tollsOWN CORRESPONDENT

The City of Cape Town’s long awaited ap-plication to theWestern Cape High Courtfor reviewing and setting aside SAN-RAL’s proposed tolling of portions of theN1 and N2 freeways commenced in courton Tuesday.Central to theCity’s arguments in seek-

ing a court order that will scrap the pro-posed Winelands Toll Project is the factthat none of the decision makers – theSANRAL Board and the National Minis-ters of Transport and Environmental Af-fairs – considered vital information suchas the projected costs of the project andthe socio-economic impact of tolling onthe residents of the Western Cape. The City’s legal team yesterday pre-

sented evidence to court illustrating thatthe projected costs of the Winelands TollProject escalated from R1,653 billion inMarch 2000 to R44,970 billion in March2010 (2010 values, excl. VAT).This equals an increase of 2 620% over

a period of 10 years and was never pre-sented to or considered by the decision-makers. We argued that none of this evi-dence was available to the decision-mak-ers and that it was a grave omission,

given that that the colossal figures ulti-mately address the considerations abouttheviability of theWinelandsToll Projectand the question of where the money tofund this project will come from.It is the City’s view that this evidence

should have been considered for a properdecision to be made.We further argued that the SANRAL

Board failed to consider the proposal totoll the N1 and N2 as is required by theSANRAL Act. Thus far, SANRAL couldnot present any evidence that such a deci-sion was taken. There is no record – neither in the form

of an agenda and minutes of meetings, nor a resolution – that the SANRALBoard considered and decided to declareportions of the N1 andN2 freeways as tollroads. Furthermore, inhismemorandumto the 2014 board, Nazir Alli – Chief Exec-utive Officer of SANRAL – stated that aresolution of the boardwas inadvertentlyomittted in the process to declare the saidhighways as toll roads, effectively con-firming the City’s argument that such aresolution was not considered at all bythe previous board. The City was due tocontinue with its opening arguments inthe court on Wednesday.

through something as tough as a divorce, learning about a similar experience thatspeaks to your own situation can be a realgame-changer.‘A Broken Wing’, is a real-life story by in-

spirational author, Ntsiki Sigege. .Written from a perspective that draws

from her strict upbringing in a religiousfamily, her spiritual grounding in the Chris-tian faith, herposition inapatriarchal socie-ty, her ambition to enter the institution of

matrimony, her marital travails and the im-pact all this had on her children makesNtsiki’s story a rich and compelling sourceof inspiration for women (andmen) who aresetting out on the marital journey. It also aims to empower couples with un-

derstanding of the implications of divorce, and in that way help save amarriage or helpwomen in particular to make smart deci-sions as they decide to take the drastic deci-sion of leaving the comfort of theirmatrimo-nial homes. The memoir is an authentic, unambigu-

ous, tell-all, heart-breaking rendition ofevents that led to the breakdown in Ntsiki’smarriage and the decision to take the drasticstep–divorce. This is a story of a woman who has learnt

that divorce takes courage, support and self-love. Ntsiki told City Vision that she will becriss-crossing the townships spreading theword that “divorce is not the end of theworld”.“Many young women are struggling with

perceptions around this,” she said.

Women’smonth year in year out is anopportunity to reflect on the powerof voice and action embodied by

these life and love givers, whose innerstrength supersedes their physicality.

Warrior Queens, Princesses, strategistsand leaderswhose compassionandawillingheart to stand and becounted makes them aforce tobe reckonedwith.

The 1956 march saw aunity of matriarchs whodid not allow a challengeto cripple and suffocatethem, but saw an oppor-tunity to stand togetherand be counted.

The gains of the 1956Women’s march, not togo to the shops or the riv-er, but to march like anarmy to the Union Build-ings; 20 000 martyrs callupon each of us to upholdand protect those gains.

It takes a sharp mindand wit to overcome ad-versities, an even braverheart with foresight and a strong moralcompass to remain unshaken.

Conviction is the heartbeat of those whoembody the values of Ubuntu, the thumpingheartbeat like a sacred drum reminds us ofthe very signal of life.

Our consciences are the very essence ofhumanity, a constant reminder of the Di-vine creator’s wisdom.

Professor Piti-ka-Ntuli reminds us of thedefinition of Umfazi (Umfa-azi) one who

from creation was granted the wisdom ofknowledge, neglected Ufa’azi (die-know-ing).

How possible is it then that one so divine-ly gifted afe-esazi, that’s foolishness and adenial of the sacred anointing?

Philanthropy is not a predisposition ofthe rich in worldly worth but in definitionit is the love for humanity, activism is em-

bedded in these values. The ultimate achieve-

ment of humanity is to bepart of a bigger whole.

We cannot afford todrop the baton while so-cial and economic illscontinue to deny womena quality of life befittingqueens. Its significantthat Women’s Month ison the eighth month, asthey say 7 is the numberof divinity and 8 is anadded extra prior to 9which is themonthwhenchildbirth occurs.

ANC attacks not rightThe recent attacks on thejudiciary by the ANC and itsalliance partners not onlyposes a threat to our democra-cy, but undermines the rule oflaw.South Africa remains a

constitutional democracygoverned by the rule of law.Our Constitution might still

be in its infancy, but it laysthe foundation for opensociety based on democraticvalues, social justice andhuman rights. The Constitution is the

cornerstone of our democracyand defines the role of thejudiciary.Section 165 (2) of the

Constitution makes provisionfor the independence of ourcourts and requires judges to

apply the law impartially andwithout fear, favour orprejudice. Therefore no one, including politicians or eventhe president, has a say in theapplication of law by ourcourts. They should not attack

judges simply because theydisagree with their rulings. The solution available if a

person is not satisfied with acourt ruling is to appeal. They must not personallyattack the integrity of thejudges.Judges, like other people,

should be subjected to con-structive criticism, but itmust be fair and in goodfaith.

MCHILL NKINTSIKuyasa

Mix with right peoplePoverty doesn’t deprive us ofthe right to think of a betterfuture, but our minds tell usthat our plans may notmaterialise as we don’t haveenough resources. To pursue a dream you

need to be committed. Don’tbow to the negative things inlife. When you dream of becom-

ing a prominent businessman, there must be a plan to startfrom scratch. It is not possible to have

millions of rand before youearn cents.Learn to start small and be

passionate about your success.

To build success is a process. When you start something

good, someone will pick youup, but if you don’t initiateanything, you will remainwhere you are.Select potential funders and

partners carefully and beginto establish a working rela-tionship with them.Good associates are essen-

tial for you to prosper in life.Mixing with backbiters will

kill your morale and self-es-teem. Never accept poverty asa stumbling block to fulfilyour dreams.

Thandeka inspiresall to be better prosWhen Thandeka Xapa finished

school in 1997, she realised thatshe would never be able to look

after her family and give them the lifeshe had always wanted with only amatric qualification.Today, the young girl who grew up in

Butterworth in the Eastern Cape is notonly an accountant at JUSTpaper andthe mother of one happy, healthy son, aged nine; she is also an inspiration toevery woman in South Africa who wantsto rise above difficult circumstances toachieve greatness.Xapa, who now lives in Gugulethu in

Cape Town, always knew that she had ahead for figures and that she wanted acareer in accounting. With a willingness to hardwork, Xapa

started working at a local take-awayshop and saved all her money. At the age of 20, with enough money

she had saved up and with support fromher parents, she started on her journeyof becoming an accountant.“As a woman you always need to be

strong and keep on believing, even if itseems impossible,” says Xapa. After three years of hard work and

multiple setbacks, she received heraccounting qualifications and became anindependent accountant. At one of her first accounting jobs,

Xapa caught her colleague and relativestealing money from the company.“It was an incredibly difficult situa-

tion to be in, I had no choice but toreport it. My integrity has always meanta lot to me, and without integrity I amnothing,” explains Xapa.During this difficult time, Xapa’s son

was her motivation. She constantlythought of him and what kind life shewanted for him and the role model shewanted to be for him. One day Xapa’sbrother visited and asked her to help

provide financially for his son. Xapacould not say no, and instantly herresponsibilities, and inspiration, doubled. After exposing the fraud at work, Xapa

decided it was time to move on and wasappointed as an accountant at JUSTpa-per in July 2014.“Thandeka is one of the most inspira-

tional people I have ever met. Shealways takes great responsibility for herwork. It is our vision at JUSTpaper toinvest in our people and by so doing inthe community in which we operate. Weare inspired by Thandeka’s hard workand motivation.” says Nicole Rosenbaumdirector at JUSTpaper.“Working for JUSTpaper has been

such a privilege, I really feel at homehere,” says Xapa who is a living exampleof how anything is possible with hardwork and determination. She is now ableto look after her family and be part ofher son’s life.“I always tell him that it is important

to believe in yourself and not to limityour potential,” says Xapa who is awoman leading by example. For more information on JUSTpaper,

AS Ajax Cape Town prepare to face in-form BidVest Wits for a second timein aweek in their first-legMTN8 semi-

final in Stellenbosch on Saturday, they willagain rely on their last line of defence inwhat is a difficult tie for Roger de Sa’s side.

Finnish goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola hasstarted the season well again, having beenarguably the most consistent gloveman inthe Premier Soccer League since arriving

at the Urban Warriors in 2013.He has been nominated for PSLGoalkeep-

er of the Season in his first two campaignsin the country, losing out to ItumelengKhune and Moeneeb Josephs, and is a keycomponent of this young Ajax side againthis year.

After a journeyman career prior to his ar-rival in South Africa, Jaakkola has finallyfound both a footballing home and a placewhere he feels comfortable raising hisyoung family. “I like it here and so does myfamily,” Jaakkola told TAB Sports Expressafter signing a new two-year contract exten-sion at Ajax prior to this season.

“I had a few other options open to me, butAjax presented the best package as a club,”Jaakkola added when talking about his de-cision to join the team two years ago.

“It is abig club, veryprofessional andwellorganisedwith great facilities. It was a goodmove for me and that’s why I decided tocome here.”

He has received good support in his twoyears at Ikamva, first from former goalkeep-er coach Sander Westerveld, who has sincereturned to the Netherlands.

And latterly fromhead coachRoger de Sa,himself a former goalkeeper who won a sin-

gle cap for South Africa but also had a stel-lar career in the South African top-flightwith Moroka Swallows and Wits Universi-ty. Jaakkola started his careerwith Finlandside TP-47, and was late snapped up by thenItalian Serie A side Siena, such was hispromise as a junior international for hiscountry. He was only 19 at the time and al-thoughhenever quitemade the grade in Ita-ly, making just a single appearance for Si-ena, it was an experience he enjoyed.

He moved to Czech side Slavia Prague in2010, and after a single season joined Scot-tish Premier League club Kilmarnock, thenunder the management of fellow FinnMixuPaatelainen.

He helped the team into a cup final, butwas in and out of the side with his contractnot renewed when it expired in 2013. ThenAjax coach Muhsin Ertugral, a friend ofPaatelainen, took the keeper on the recom-mendation of the ex-Finland international.“We spoke about the player often,”
