LAUGHINGlunga adam

Just how long haveour fingers become...Martin Luther King I am not, but I dodream of a day when our belovedMzansi becomes a theft-free country. We have become such a nation of

thieves that you’d swear that stealingis in our DNA.And here I’m not just talking about

petty stuff. No. I mean stealing real bigthings. Back when we were kids, wehad so much innocent fun that stealinga couple of cents to buy delicacies wasconsidered perfectly normal. We were small -time skollies without

realising it. But of course there wasalways the very real possibility of awet towel being unleashed on yourbuttocks should you be caught withyour hands in the cookie jar.Remember those times when you

flatly denied that you had helpedyourself to a sizeable chunk of thesugar, when the evidence was showingall over your face.Sadly, and especially when the habit

is not nipped in the bud soon afterdetection, the older the thief grows, the more serious the thieving. Onebegins stealing real stuff that couldland one in murky waters. One incident that involved yours

truly in primary school comes tomind. I am not sure what got to me,but I was so naive to be co-opted intoa somewhat corrupt activity at onestage; about three of my classmateshad intentions to steal this one girl’stextbook and, since I looked the quietand innocent one in the class, the plotwas to hide it in my schoolbag, untilafter school. They– and me, of course–thought I’d be the last person to besuspected of any foul play. How wrongwe were, because it appears there wasa roving eye to our misguided deal.Imagine my embarrassment anddisappointment when the textbook wasretrieved from my backpack, in fullview of bewildered and bemusedclassmates. A lesson well-learnt. Thisstealing business is an ancient art andevery day it takes on new forms. Thecorruption we see in the upper eche-lons of society is clear evidence ofthis. We wake up to new scandals all

the time that we have long stoppedbeing shocked by these. It’s notuncommon to hear of a governmentemployee twiddling their thumbs athome for years, while continuing toreceive a salary. Now that’s Looting101! The thing about theft is that itcomes in many shapes and sizes. Takefor example- with all due respect-thesometimes unscrupulous business ofsangomas. I cannot dispute the factthere are credible traditional healersout there whose work is above board, but you also have those who over-promise and under deliver. They preyon unsuspecting and desperate folkand, as a result, our people have beenknown to lose their valuable assetsand moolah to these individuals. Onthe pamphlets advertising theirproducts/services, these sangomasrave about a ‘no win no fee’ policy, but I know of some who have incurredlarge financial losses but have not, forexample, been brought back their lostlovers. How on earth does one ‘bringback a lost lover’ anyway. Somecustomers are even told to first makelarge upfront payments or slaughterthis or that animal in order for the jobto be done. It’s time these evil peopleare exposed. It’s 2016, for Pete’s sake. Ihave seen people stealing sneakers andclothing from the washing line, beforemaking a dash for it. Others do notlive to tell the tale though, as the biteof mob justice is known to be strongerthan its bark in our communities. Ialso thought I’d seen it all until I cameacross the bizarre case of one youngfellow in my area who had an obses-sion with stealing STOP signs. Thank-fully, the cops managed to put a stopto his misdemeanours by sending himto jail.

Sneaker boys keep tekkies cleanMANDLA MAHASHE

Gugulethu seems to spring up new en-terprises by the day, and, come week-ends, locals step out in style, as a re-

sult.NY71 Tekkie Wash is the brainchild of

friends BongoMahambehlala and Phila Ma-gidigidi.The duo have been running a sneaker

cleaning services to residents from Nju andsurrounds since January.According to Mahambehlala,30, this idea

was brewing in his mind for sometime butonly came to a boil when he saw a similarservice in a television series.“I have always been a person that enjoyed

a clean living space and do a lot of choresaround the house. I had toyed with the ideabut when I saw a similar programme on TV,I started askingmy friends if theywould payfor a similar service,” he told City Vision. He said that most of his friend said that theywould pay for such a service and he startedwashing their sneakers. “My partner and Istarted spreading the word and our clientsstarted doing the same thing. We used towash a few sneakers a week but now we av-erage around four sneakers a day. Our cus-tomers were so happy that they started rec-ommending us to other friends and we arehappy because it means we are heading in

the right direction,” he said. They charge R20 a pair and say that this

is so that their price do not alienate otherpotential clients.“Everyone wears sneakers, from the

young to the old, so we must cater for every-one. We noticed that themajority of our cus-tomers are ladies and young people in gener-al.We believe that most come to us as part

of the preparations for the weekend withbusiness picking up around Wednesdays. We have a 48 hour turnaround time and

so far our clients have been very happywithour work,” Mahambehlala said.He said that another trend they spotted

was that the favourite brand so far was Con-verse All Star followed by Nike sneakers.“Our most immediate goal is to have a de-

livery service using a branded bicycle andin the long term we are hoping to have ourown shop where will be able to dye thesneakers, fix them and sell shoe related ma-terial like laces, inners and shoe care prod-ucts,” he added. One happy client, WandileAyliff who is also a friend, said that he wassold on the idea the first time he was ap-proached. “It’s a great idea because peopledon’t have the time to clean their sneakersand they a very affordable,” he said.NY71 TekkieWash can be contacted on 060

“My child cannot apply for a scholarshipnow, because she has not written all hersubjects. The plan turned out to be a wasteof time for them, because they have to waitfor another year to be able to go to universi-ties,” she said.Zoliswa Ngqukuvana, the principal, said

the Western Cape Education Department(WECD) came up with the plan to assistlearners who were seen to be at risk of fail-ing matric which was to split the subjectsto make it easier for them to pass. She said the reason the learners did not

write with those who were writing lastweek is that they do not fall under the cate-gory of supplementary examination, butmodular learners. Those who wrote last week are supple-

mentary students. She said modular learners were sched-

uled to write in June and that there was acommunication breakdown from the sideof WCED which resulted in the confusion.Ngqukuvana said it was the responsibili-

ty of the department to communicate withthe learners as they were no longer underthe school.“We were under the impression that the

department was communicating withthem.Wewere surprised to see them arriv-ing here for examination on Wednesday.Theywill write in June for National SeniorCertificate (NSC). The fault is not on ourside, but on the side of the department. They are out of our system. I managed tofind all the information for them after I

learnt that therewas confusion,”Ngqukuva-na said.CityVision sent a series of questions to the

WCED regarding the matter, but had not re-ceived any reply at the time of going to print.Meanwhile, the future of the learners re-

mains unclear.

Crime: Learners taught pitfallsMBONGISENI MASEKO

Full Moon Records, formed by a group ofyoungsters, has taken a conscientiousdecision to embark on a crime, drugs

and gang fighting strategy in Philippi. This theydobyholding sessions at schools

in the area, where they speak-out against thehavoc caused by gang territory wars anddrugs use among learners. The first session was held at Sinethemba

High School on Friday. The long-term mission is to visit all

schools, including primary, secondary andhigh schools.SelloMangwana, the founder of FullMoon

Records, said they saw the need to take partin crime-prevention in the area by speakingto learners at local schools which they feltwerevulnerable to getting involved in crimi-nal activities.“Our vision is to motivate learners to stay

away from gangsterism and drugs. We tar-geted them because we believe that we canmould them to stay in the right path as op-posed to changing them only when they be-come adults. There are a number of youthswhowant to change their ways, but lackmo-tivation. For 15 years Nyanga has been

known as a murder capital and we want tochange that,” Mangwana said.Mangwana said the motivational team

will also include ex-offenders as motivation-al speakers.Thandikhaya “Jisto”Mtshuka is one such

offender, who was released from prison fourmonths ago.Mtshuka is still building up the confi-

dence to come out and speak to others abouthis past brush with the law.He has signed with the recording compa-

ny, thoug, and is due to release a solo soon.Mangwana, also amember of Ruffest-a hip

hop group- said they have recently starteda soccer team,Moon-hoodUnitedwhich con-sists of U/11, 15 and a senior team, whichtheywant alsowant to use as part of the arse-nal against crime.Other artist in the ensemble include Yol-

anda Stemela of Idlozi fame, which is cur-rently making waves in local radio stations.Lutho Tsewu, a Grade 8 learner at the

school, said the motivation was good.“I learnt that drugs will destroy me from

achieving my goals and that they will causeunnecessary delay in reaching my dreams. They told us to focus on our studies. Theirmotivation was good for us,” Tsewu said.

Retiree goes back to old post and does what tickles his fancyMBONGISENI MASEKO

Not even old-age could deter a retiredgroundsman from returning to his oldwork-place to help with its maintenance.Mzimasi “Smiley” Sgonya,65, looked aft-

er the grounds of theLangaPolice Staionun-til his retirement in November 2015.Realising that sitting idly at home as a

pensioner was dangerous to one’s health,Sgonya decided to go back there and volun-teer to work the lawn again, work which he

loves most.Donning his overalls to keep the station

clean and green, he seemed happy to be clip-ping the hedge and mowing the lawn.Sgonya first joined the South African Po-

lice Service (SAPS), in 1998 as a reservist. He started working at Mitchells Plain Po-

lice Station, and then moved to assist at thePhilippi train station before he was movedto Bishop Lavis Training College where hehelped with planting of trees and keepingthe garden clean and also with self defence

training. He was later moved to Langa Police Sta-

tion where he retired.Sgonya said hewas proud formaking his

mark in the SAPS, which he said was veryclose to his heart.“I enjoyed working in the SAPS a lot. I

confiscated dozens of illegal firearms in thePhilippi to Khayelitsha rail line.I can easily see someone who is armed

just by observing his walk. I put those cul-prits in jail,” he said.

He also did agricultural studies at theUni-versity of Stellenbosch. He remembers thatthe garden at the Langa police station wasa mess when he first landed there.“I love giving a helping hand at the police

station. I cannot stay at home when there iswork that I could be doing at the police sta-tion. There were no plants here when I ar-rived and I planted them. The police stationmust always be clean and look beautiful,” headded. The Karate Sensei stays in IlithaPark, Khayelitsha.

Colonel Fikile Macala, the station commander at Langa Police Station and Inspector OdwaMakupula, communication officer at the police station praised Mzimasi “Smiley” Sgonya, 65,(left) for his continous support even after retirement, in Langa. PHOTO: MBONGISENI MASEKO

Road-rage: Manto find closureThe South African National Civic Orga-

nisation has commended the roleplayed by the media towards the arrest

of three white men, accused of severely beat-ing a black man in Cape Town last year inan apparent road-rage attack.

The trio were granted bail when they ap-peared in the Cape Town Magistrates courton Monday.

“We hope that the trio arrested last Fridayafter an extensive manhunt will receive theharshest sentence to communicate a strongmessage against racist hooliganism,” SAN-CO national spokesperson,Jabu Mahlangusaid.

Mahlangu singled out eNCA for broad-casting footage of the incident and CapeTown newspapers for publishing pictures ofthe suspects following SANCO’s appeal.

“The breakthrough attests toour earlierassertion that not all whites harbour racialprejudice or support racism.

We had, from the onset maintained thathad the case been prioritsed and resourcesdeployed towards mobilisation of communi-ties,an early arrest would have been effect-ed,” he said.

He expressed hope that justice will ulti-mately be served to restore public confi-dence in the criminal justice system and forSonwabile Jakuja to find closure.

“We hope that the breakthrough in theJakuta investigation has reminded policethat partnership with communities is key tofighting the scourge of crime,” Mahlanguunderscored.

According to eNCA footage showed earli-er, Jakuja was attacked in Cape Town onJune 2015 by three unknown assailants inthe Table View area.

They initially stopped in front of his carin the early hours of the morning, before get-ting out, and proceeding to punch, kick andbeat him.

He was left injured and unconscious onthe side of the road and spent seven days inICU.

Jakuja has been waiting for more than sixmonths for police to make a breakthroughin the case, despite CCTV footage showingthe attackers’ faces.

In the interview with eNCA, Jakuja hadsaid that he felt let down by the police, andbelieves the attack was racially motivated.

“In Cape Town, if you’re a black personthere is nothing that can be done [for you],”he claimed.

The case continues in Cape Town Magis-trates Court.

Construction ofhouses haltedMBONGISENI MASEKO

Itwas a big joy for allwhen the foundationfor RDP houses for deserving beneficia-ries was laid, but things then seemed to

have ground to a stand-still.And now residents of oscar Mpethat in

Nyanga East are seeing red as the construc-tion has been put on hold.Lucy Kandisa, 45, a street committee

member and also one of the beneficiaries, said the construction of 34 houses was halt-ed in June 2015 as there were issues thatwere still needed to be ironed out.“It is not clear now what is causing the

delay for the building of our houses. Howlong must it take to resolve any problemthat has risen? We cannot wait any longernow to see the construction resuming. Wecannot keep on staying in shacks while ourhouses are standing unfinished,” she said. The project will see 105 houses in total be-

ing built. Kandisa said it was resolved thatsome other plots would be allocated for ben-eficiaries who are coming from areas likeMau Mau, Old Location and other sur-

rounding areas.Nathan Adriaanse, director of communi-

cations and stakeholder relations for the de-partment of Human Settlements inWesternCape Government, said this project is re-ferred to as Peoples Housing and Empower-ment Project (PHEP), where typically thecommunity will come together to make acontribution towards the building of theirown homes. He said it allows the beneficiaries to es-

tablish a Housing Support Organisationthat can liaise with the department andmu-nicipality on the construction of theirhomes.“We can confirm that 58 units within the

project were vandalised. This vandalisa-tion came about through internal dynamicswithin the community. Of these 58 units, 50of the units have been completed and occu-pied. “In terms of the outstanding 8 units,we are following our internal processes toconfirm funding approval, once this is ob-tained further communication will be sentto the community organisation involvedwith the project,” Adriaanse said.

the day and night care centre, which hermother opened in Phakamisa in Khayelit-sha.“She was the one who inspired me to open

the centre. I looked after her on my own, Istruggled to feed her and to buy nappies.Transport to hospital was also very difficult.I couldn’t even afford to pay someone to lookafter her while I was at work,” said Xabani-sa.

Opened in 2005, Sibongile Centre aims toprovide quality care to children with cere-bral palsy and other severe disabilities inthe Khayelitsha community. With just 12children in 2006, the centre now cares forabout 52 children between the ages of twoand 18 years. There are also three residen-tial homes for children.“I wanted to pass on themessage to other

parents who have children living with dis-abilities that there is support in the com-munity for them, they are not alone.”Xabanisa first operated from two ship-

ping containerswhichwere donated toher. There was no electricity or running water, little space, and very little money for food, clothing or nappies. But people noticed thework that Xabanisa was doing in the com-munity, and she attracted funders and do-nors.The day care centre now operates from

Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 4pm andthe homes, situated in Khayelitsha’s IlithaPark, run 24 hours a day for seven days aweek. The centre also caters for children with

disabilities such as developmental delay,Down’s syndrome and autism.“We have a support group programme

where parents interact and advise eachother on how to deal with disabilities andits challenges. Because the stigma of disa-bility is there, most children are being ne-glected because of the difficulties parentsgo through,” said Xabanisa.Xabanisa said she was grateful to the

church for visiting the centre. “This reallymeans a lot to us andwe are always delight-ed when people pop in, some of these chil-dren don’t get any visits and this is heart-warming,” she said. Mnweba said theywould spread the word about “selfless anddedicated people like Xabanisa.”“They are doing a very good work.”

Workers sold to capitalistsI read in the press that governmentintends relaxing the Labour Relations Actto become business friendly. What is thisall about?

It looks as if we want a strong economyand for capitalists to get huge profits, butthat’s only possible if the working classbleeds. It was reported that some mininghouses are planning on retrenchingworkers. When #FeesMustFall started, the chief communist stood up and saidthe private sector must fund free educa-tion.

By so saying, he was instructing theprivate sector not to give the workersincreases this coming year.

What happened with the e-tolls, labour

brokers and recently, the workers’pensions?

In our country, where most of themanagers and executives are whites, withonly a few blacks who had brain surgeryto think like whites, once the LabourRelation Act has been taken away, exploitation and racism will rise.

I don’t understand why they say theywant to make firing workers more simplebecause it is already simple. This isfixing what is not broken. In a nutshell, relaxing the act and upcoming retrench-ments will never boost the economy butwill make the decline worse.

Gugs library under-utilisedAs a student one of my tasks forresearch is to check on the currentstatus of my community library. LastThursday I had arranged a meetingwith the Gugulethu Public Librarywith a view to request library servi-ces, most probably a container at theSt Francis Adult Centre in NY18,nearer to Gugulethu Square, in linewith the City of Cape Town’s policy‘to bring services closer to wherepeople are’.

My proposal was turned down. Hereis the picture: The Gugulethu commu-nity has over 100 000 inhabitants, andso one can imagine now with thedevelopment of the Gugulethu Squarewe should be way over that number in2016. According to them, librarypatrons using the facility on a busymonth reach 8000, and if the library in

a week issues 100 library materialsthat is a bonus.

From this picture this facility is awhite elephant, how can somethingthat can contribute to our personaldevelopment be so useless? Please sendin your comment [email protected] to save this library, especially calling on high schoollearners and those who are unem-ployed as the facility offers freeinternet daily for 45 minutes, printingat 60c per page. They are planning freeWi-Fi too. Ndithetha nawe mntuwaseGugulethu Section 1,2,3 and 4,Phola Park, KwaKhikhi, KhayalethuPark, Khanya Park, Luyoloville, NewRest, Barcelona, KTC nase NewCrossroads.

Generations has lost thelegacy regarding KaraboThe character of Karabo Moroka onGenerations - The Legacy reflects exactlywhat the producer of the soapie thinks.

Most soapies promote beliefs that areforeign to our culture.

There is nothing positive to learn fromthese programmes. Polyandry(in which awoman has more than one husband) ismostly practised in India and around theHimalaya Mountains. People, especiallyso-called educated ones, should be carefulwhen importing foreign cultural practic-es, as some of them do not fit in ourconditions. There are a lot of factorsinvolved in polyandry which would makeit difficult for it to succeed in ourcountry.

The practice is meant for societieswhere there are more men than women.

It is also used to reduce the population.Another factor involved the religion of

the area and whether it allows such apractice. Is South African society readyfor such a custom? Do we satisfy some ifnot all of these and other factors involvedin such a choice? What happens to thetwo husbands of this wife when she ispregnant and has to spend her timetaking care of the newborn baby? I thinkGenerations - The Legacy has lost theplot. What the soapie is promoting iswrong.

Respecting opposition is part of democracyOur history has been a bitter one domi-nated by colonialism, racism and apart-heid.

However, we have done well in makingsure that South Africa is liberated. Idoubt if the current ANC leadershipknows where it is taking us. I think theANC government has forgotten the powerof political opposition. In principle, thepolitical opposition has a special respon-sibility in parliament, which is to protectthe Constitution. The Nkandla issue wasnot raised for the EFF, DA or otherpolitical opposition parties to exploit but

for public interest. But thanks to theopposition parties, President Zuma isbeing held accountable for using taxpay-ers’ money. I thank the Public Protector’soffice for its endeavours to ensure thattruth prevails despite the criticism andinsults. Without accountability there isno trust and Zuma owes South Africansan apology. I appeal to citizens of thiscountry to vote responsibly, as thiscountry needs people who are ready toserve the country with honesty.

Lili relieved;blasts cadresTheAfricanNational Congress (ANC) Pro-vincial Executive Committee (PEC) mem-ber Andile Lili claims some members onthe provincial executive tried to shieldchairperson Marius Fransman from alle-gations of sexual harassment levelledagainst him.Lili spoke candidly on the matter follow-

ing his release on three charges of con-tempt of court yesterday.Lili was arrested and held for more than

aweek formissing three court cases sched-uled on the same day at two differentcourts in January.Lili’s defensewas that he had three cases

to attend to at theKhayelitsha andBellvillecourts on 29 January. The matters related to charges of public

violence and incitement to commit vio-lence, as well as a child maintenance case.Lili told the court it was a “sad” day for

him as he could not divide himself intothree and therefore arrived late at all thecases.NowLili has claimed that someofhis col-

leagues, including spokesperson, JabuMfusi, have it in for him.“Wewere veryhonest to ourselves to say

MariusFransmanshould stepdown, finishand klaar.”Lili was found not guilty of being in con-

tempt of court. The cases, however, werescheduled for the same day and time withLili notmaking it to a single one.He lookedrelieved as the magistrate explained heshould not be held in contempt of court.

Action drama series airs on FridayBARBARA MAREGELE

A new “action-packed” drama seriesproduced by Cape Town based produc-tion company, Community Media

Trust, will be aired for the first time onSABC1 tonight.Community Media Trust is the non-profit

company that owns GroundUp.The series called JAB follows the “coming-

of-age” story of Bee Sondlo, a 19-year-old fe-male boxer from Langa.

Despite financial and social hurdles,Sondlo is determined tomake it in the worldof competitive women’s boxing.

The series, directed by Lucilla Blanken-berg and screenwritten by Paul Ian John-son, aims at highlighting the plight of youngfemale competitive boxers in South Africa.

The first of 13 episodes will be aired at8:30pm on Friday.

“I’ve wanted to tell this story for years,”said Blankenberg, who herself trained inkickboxing. “I found myself training andcompeting with kickboxers and boxers in asport dominated by men dotted with a fewwomen here and there.”The cast includes Vanessa Ntlapo as Bee

Sondlo, Mzu Ntantiso, Faniswa Yisa, Zingi

Mtuzula and Lemogang Tsipa. The boxing sequences were choreo-

graphed for the series by professional fe-male boxing champion Rushda Mallick.JAB is the production company’s second

television series. The first, Amaza, wasbroadcast in 2014, and reached an estimated7.5 million viewers.“Community Media Trust has been devel-

opingnew talent onJAB, fromactors towrit-ers to production crew. The company alsoprovides on the job training for young aspir-ing screenwriters,” the company says.In a statement, Community Media Trust

noted that while the standard of competitivewomen’s boxing continues to grow in SouthAfrica, professional female boxers are stillnot given the same publicity and sponsor-ships as theirmale counterparts. JAB hopesto help promote this increasingly popularsport and to help foster a sense of inclusive-ness in what is often a very male dominateddomain.

Vanessa Ntlapo plays Bee Sondlo in the dramaseries.

Coach Baxter now takes aim at his former club, Kaizer ChiefsHe used to win trophies for Kaizer Chiefs, now Stuart Baxter will be plotting Amakho-si’s downfall!Baxter, who led Chiefs to the Absa Pre-

miership andMTN8double before leaving towork in Turkey at the end of last season, hasnow come back to haunt the champions.

Baxter will lead his new club, SuperSportUnited, against the side he coachedwith dis-tinction for three years at the FNB StadiumonSaturday (8.15pm), threeweeks after join-ing Matsatsantsa a Pitori.

Baxter won the league and Nedbank Cupdouble – coincidentally beating SuperSportin the 2012-13 Nedbank Cup final – andclinched another double before he resignedlast June.

Said the coach: “This game against Chiefscame a bit soon for me.

“ I would have liked more time with theplayers. But they are all fired up. The adren-alin is pumping.Wemanaged tobeatUniver-sity of Pretoria 2-0 last weekend and thatshowed me we are making progress.”

Baxter said he still had plenty of friendsat Chiefs, including his successor, SteveKomphela. He explained: “There will beemotion and plenty of hugs, both before andafter the game. But theminute we cross thatwhite line and the game kicks off, all friend-ships are forgotten.

“We need the points more than them, asour goal is a top eight finish.”

Baxter voiced his support for Komphela, who has come under fire from a section ofthe supporters: “Steve is doing a really good

job. It is not easy at Chiefs. The margin be-tween having a good season and a reasona-ble one is very fine. I don’t think any fan cancomplain about him.”Baxter said his advantage would be that

he knows the players and has a good ideawhat to expect: “But at the same time theyknow how I operate, so it will be an interest-ing game.”It will also be an emotional return for Su-

perSport strikerKingstonNkhatha, whohasscored twice in Baxter’s three matches incharge. The Zimbabwean striker was givena rough time by the Chiefs fans before hejoined Matsatsantsa last January.Baxter always had faith in Nkhatha at

Chiefs. He has shown he is getting back tohis best. He will have a point to prove to theChiefs fans.Said Baxter: “Kingston is scoring goals

again. He scored awonder goal in our 3-1 lossto Ajax Cape Town and then scored in the2-0 win over Tuks.”
