Each Stage lasts foran academic year and you need to complete modulestotalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage. What you will study - key themesYou study modules across five themes, in differentproportions depending on which degree you choose,including:

DesignDesign, and designing sustainable solutions to infrastructureproblems, is at the heart of our degrees.

At each Stage, you undertake a large engineering designtask. We have developed these from our world-leadingresearch, in conjunction with our industrial partners.

This ensures you develop the latest research-based andprofessional knowledge.

You'll analyse your design theories in our state-of-the-artfacilities, which have been independently rated as‘excellent’.

InfrastructureThis theme introduces you to the principles of structuraland materials engineering that can be applied to thedesign and building of:

• bridges• buildings• transport systems

Modelling and informaticsYou will develop your fundamental mathematical,analytical and computational skills that you'll use in yourdesign projects through this theme.

Environmental systemsThis theme explores our relationship with theenvironment around us, including water, land and air.

Human and management systemsThis theme focuses on the challenges facing civilengineers, such as:

• climate change• growing populations and scarce resources• issues such as ethics and management

SurveyingThis theme introduces you to:

• engineering surveying• GPS• aerial photography• 3D laser scanning

It will also introduce you to mapping and positioningtechniques that underpin any infrastructure project.

MEng final yearIn Stage 4, you learn in weekly blocks, often alongside ourMSc students and professional engineers from industry.

You'll work full time on a unit of study for one week, with thefollowing week timetabled for independent study.

You have a choice of modules that offer career-enhancingskills.

This include Global Engineering, an international designand build challenge that has seen students work inBorneo to design and build a water supply for a remote,jungle village.

This also includes Business Enterprise in Science andEngineering that teaches you how to set up and operatea business in the construction sector.

In addition, the Career development module gives you thechance to undertake a work placement, allowing you tobenefit from our excellent links with industry.

Teaching and assessmentYou'll learn through lectures, practical work, site visits,individual study and group work.

A typical week includes lectures each morning with two orthree laboratory or design sessions in the afternoons.

In Stage 4, you work full time on a unit of study for oneweek, with the following week timetabled for independentstudy.

We'll assess you through coursework. This may include:

• reports and calculations• using 3D visualisation tools• making presentations to practising engineers from

industry

Support and settling inWe provide plenty of support to help you successfully movefrom school to university study. We’ll help you settle inquickly and are here if you have any issues.

Entry Requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis.

If your qualifications are not listed here, please see ouradditional entry requirements web pages to find out whichother qualifications are considered.

The entrance requirements below apply to 2019 entry.

Advice on Maths and Science requirementsIf you don’t think you will have the exact Mathematics andScience qualifications referred to in our entry requirementsby the time you need them, you may not be sure what todo.  We hope that the following will help.

• If you already have, or are taking, the A level (orequivalent) Maths and Science qualifications specified inour entry requirements, you should apply for stage 1(First Year) entry of the engineering degree course inwhich you are interested

• If you have a Maths qualification but will not have it at Alevel (or equivalent) when you start your degree, youshould apply for the relevant degree with FoundationYear.  We may give you the opportunity to take theNewcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course* and theoption to start in First Year if we think that this will be thebest route for you

• If you have A level Maths (or equivalent) already but not atthe required grade, you should contact us for advice. We may decide that you could be considered forFoundation Year entry, or it may be that our engineeringcourses are not the best options for you

• If you will not have the equivalent of an A level in theScience subject (if any) required, you should apply for therelevant degree with Foundation Year.

If you are still not sure, do not worry.

Whatever you apply for, our Admissions Tutors will help youdecide which is the best route for you.  They may thereforemake you an offer for a different course (e.g. FoundationYear entry instead of First Year entry) from the one youapply for.

(*The Newcastle University Pre-Entry Maths Course aims toprovide the requisite mathematical skills and conceptsneeded on our engineering degree courses and to preparestudents for the modes of learning they will encounter.  Thematerials for the course are delivered electronically andinclude opportunities to practise your skills.  You study thematerials in your own time and, when you are ready, youbook your exam with the Engineering School to which youhave applied.   A fee of £150 is payable at the time ofbooking the exam or shortly before the date set forexamination.)

A LevelsAAA including Mathematics, but excluding General Studiesand Critical Thinking. For Biology, Chemistry and Physics Alevels, we require a pass in the practical element. GCSEPhysics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B or 6)required if not offered at A or AS level.

Scottish QualificationsAAA at Advanced Higher including Mathematics. HigherPhysics required at grade B if not offered at AdvancedHigher. Two Highers at the required grade (in differentsubjects to those offered at Advanced Higher) may replacea third Advanced Higher

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

International Baccalaureate37 points with Mathematics at Higher Level grade 6 orabove. Physics required at Standard Level grade 5 or aboveif not offered at Higher Level.

Irish Leaving CertificateCandidates will normally only be considered for FoundationYear entry. All applications will be considered on anindividual basis.

Access QualificationsIn a relevant area of engineering or physical science. At least45 level 3 credits at Distinction. At least 15 credits should bein mathematics (including differential and integral calculus).Other units should include analytical engineering sciences(e.g. mechanical or electrical science/principles, physics,chemistry, materials science, electronics).

GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B or6) required if Physics not offered at a higher level.

• Civil Engineering with Foundation Year MEng Honours(H291)

This will provide you with the knowledge you need toprogress to one of our three- or four-year Civil Engineeringdegrees.

English Language RequirementsApplicants whose first language is not English require aminimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Other International QualificationsABB at A level is typically the minimum required for entry toan undergraduate course. You can check the equivalentgrades for qualifications offered in your country.

Civil Engineering careersThe quality of Newcastle graduates is well recognised by theengineering profession and our students have an excellentrecord for obtaining rewarding employment at the end oftheir degree programmes.

We host a dedicated Civil Engineering professionaldevelopment fair for second-year students. Many of thesector’s leading employers and professional bodies attend.

In recent years, our graduates have gone on to work for arange of leading companies and authorities such as Atkins,Arup, eCOM, CH2M Hill, Mott MacDonald, MWH, Transportfor London, and Balfour Beatty.
