    Built-in switches cut costConventionally, Ethernet networks use a star topology, whichrequires extra hardware (switches) to interconnect devices.Omrons SmartSlice PROFINET-IO Unit gives the option

    of linking devices in the conventional line topology used withmost field buses. No additional hardware is needed.Making use of field devices with an integrated switchingfunction is a very efficient and cost-saving method thatminimizes the bill of materials and saves on installation costs.It also facilitates easy system extension in the accustomedmanner when the time arises.

    Making Industrial Ethernet easyPROFINET-IO offers many advantages for both systemintegrators and equipment/machinery manufacturers.Combining the ease of use of PROFIBUS-DP with

    a standard Ethernet physical layer, PROFINET-IO offersthe increased speed, easier management of ever-increasing amounts of device data, and openness forintegrating standard Ethernet data communication.PROFINET-IO has standardized functions forparameterization, diagnostics and alarms which arefar more extensive than in conventional bus systems.

    High availability by ring redundancyNaturally, PROFINET is inherently reliable in its own right,but increased reliability of the network connection canbe achieved by closing the line structure to form a ring.The advantage of a ring structure is that any single cablefailure or malfunction in one device will not lead toa disruption in communication between other connected

    devices. This highly secure method requires one device inthe ring to be a redundancy manager supporting the MRP(Media Redundancy Protocol) as prescribed in the PROFINETspecification, to assure operation of all devices supportingring redundancy.

    MRP includedOmrons SmartSlice remote I/O stations support the MRPprotocol as redundancy clients. They report the status of theircommunication connections to the MRP manager. In caseof a connection failure, the MRP manager will activate thealternative communication path, so that all stations remain

    accessible. By including the SmartSlice stations as activemembers of the ring, the number of dedicated switchesneeded to build a redundancy ring is greatly reduced.

    PROFINET easy to set up,with open software tools

    Omron products support PROFINET-IO for cyclic master-slave

    communication with soft real-time characteristics, asrequired in general-purpose industrial automation. The mostuniversal PROFINET variant, PROFINET-IO is similar to fieldbuscommunication and offers added flexibility while remainingeasy to use.

    One tool for all networksEase of use is the key to PROFINETs success. And if youcurrently use Omrons highly popular CX-One software, youalready own the configuration tools. The network-independentFDT technology Omron already uses for its PROFIBUSconfiguration tool also supports PROFINET.

    With PROFIBUS-DP interface units for all main product seriesOmron has already integrated PROFIBUS in its SmartPlatform solutions. Moreover, Omrons FDT-basedconfiguration software, which is open to third-party devices,

    offers full access to any parameter in any device,

    at any time.

    FDT is Open TechnologyAn FDT program (Field Device Tool) is a network-independentframework that accepts product-specific plugins from anyvendor provided it is FDT compliant. Called DTMs (Device TypeManagers), these plugins provide a user interface for settingup and maintaining a device, and handle the communicationover the network. This technology eliminates the need to learnhow to use a new tool when changing bus systems and allowsaccess to the device-specific features of each vendors devicevia its own dedicated interface.

    Any device that is not provided with a DTM can be configuredusing conventional text-based GSDML (XML) files.

    FDT GroupThe FDT Group is an open, independent collaborationof international companies dedicated to establishing FDTtechnology as an international standard within theautomation industry. FDT technology standardizes thesoftware interface between field devices and engineeringsystems. The key feature is its independence from thecommunication protocol and the software environmentof either the device or the host system. FDT allows anydevice to be accessed from any host through any protocol.

    PROFINET-IO controller CJ1W-PNT21This module is designed for use with any CPU unit belongingto Omrons highly successful CJ series of programmable logiccontrollers. It uses a separate communication processor toguarantee reliable, high-level performance independent of thePLC program or its CPU speed. As it is transparent to Omronsown FINS communication protocol, the PROFINET IO controller

    also provides a communication channel so that legacy devicesor existing software tools can be used to exchange data withthe PLC CPU through the PROFINET controller.

    PROFINET-IO device GRT1-PNTThis communication interface for Omrons SmartSlice remoteI/O system allows up to SmartSlice units to be mounted perstation. SmartSlice has built-in intelligence that helps usersto reduce engineering time by autonomously monitoringmachine status and performance to help schedule preventivemaintenance. The PROFINET-IO device has two externalnetwork connections to allow direct linking of multiple devicesin a line structure. Built-in support for MRP (MediumRedundancy Protocol) allows these units to be installed asan integral part of a redundant ring topology. An optionaldedicated memory end plate allows on-site unit replacementwithout the need to reconfigure settings. For more
