Second grade is off to a running start! In ELA this month, we will begin working on the writing process. The students will continue to review asking and answering questions to both fiction and non-fiction texts. Have your child keep a journal to get into good writing habits. Your child should be able to add all single digit numbers mentally by the end of this month as well. We will be working on addition with regrouping and practicing their basic facts at home will be helpful. In Social Studies, we are learning all about Georgia’s geography and first people. Be on the lookout for field trip permission slips and information as we plan to visit one of our Georgia regions soon. Finally, encourage your child to look up! The sky will be our Science topic. We are studying stars and the moon…to infinity and beyond!

First Graders are counting COINS! Pennies and Dimes all of the time! Students are learning the value of pennies. They are also making connections between pennies and dimes, for example, they have learned that 10 pennies are equal to 1 dime.

Our young scientists are continuing to explore the effects of magnets. Does water affect magnets? Paper? A Desk? Slime? Inquiring minds want to know.

Please continue to READ, READ, READ for 35 minutes per day to increase sight word knowledge, also take time to allow your child to retell the story to help then remember the KEY details. We are all working towards getting 60 AR points to go on our Mystery Field Trip at the end of the year!

Greetings Fabulous Fourth Grade Parents & Students. Students are continuing to learn the clear expectations at C. J. Hicks and our R.I.S.E criteria. Please have your child to read for 35 minutes or more an evening. This will help them to reach their Lexile goals quarterly as well as the 860L that is need for the end of 4th grade. Students can also check books out from the Nancy Guinn Library. Use the website arbookfinder.com to help you to know if your child is selecting the books on their Lexile, as well as how many points they should receive for that particular book when they take and AR test.

Our upcoming learning targets are Reading/ELA- character analyzation, summarizing, main idea; Math- factors, multiples, multiplication & division; Science- weather, Social Studies - A New Nation (constitution); Writing- Writing Personal Narratives.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions,Fifth Grade RISING UP! We are working

hard to reach high levels of success. As we prepare for the Georgia Milestones, we are learning, assessing, and re-learning the standards. Please ask your child each day what he or she is learning at school.

Your child visits the library almost every day, therefore; they should bring a library book home each day. Please have your child read the book each night and come to school prepared to take an Accelerated Reader test the following morning. Please stress the importance of reading at home! Ask your child where his or her book is, as it should be coming home with them.

For math, your child is working an adding and subtracting decimals. Students can practice this online with Moby Max and First in Math.

In the world of Science, students are studying cells. They should be able to describe and label parts of a cell.

In Social Studies, the students are learning about World War 1 and America’s involvement in the war.

Thank you for your continued support of your

We will have a fall leaf tree in our classroom as well as a fence for our “5 little pumpkins” finger play. We will do many art activities with pumpkins, leaves, squirrels and spiders. We will decorate a pumpkin and may carve it out to see the seeds and try pumpkin seeds at snack. Our book of the month will be “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle. Find this book at the library or on YouTube, and read and sing it with your child.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brn7LlA-_CE
