Have you ever heardsomeone say to you “I

identify myself culturally as a Jew but Idon’t go in for organized religion?” Iactually hear this a lot. There are thosewho see community prayer and ritual asan anachronistic throw-back to the pastand seek some other way to expresstheir “Jewishness.” There are somecongregations that follow what hasbeen termed“Secular Humanistic”Judaism. According to their website,“Humanistic Judaism offers anontheistic alternative in contemporaryJewish life.” They stress the concept of ashared Jewish Identity but without thebelief in a supreme being. Although Isubscribe to the belief in “differentstrokes for different folks,” I mustconfess I find this whole alternative totraditional Judaism somewhat puzzling;the reason being Judaism, at its core, isall about monotheism and grew out ofthat central belief. In effect, taking Godout of Judaism to me is akin to having ameal consisting only of spices withoutany food.

Oh,Good! My Dog Foundthe Chain Saw

[Last month I offered an old article thatI’d written concerning the movieKeeping the Faith. It brought to mindanother article that I wanted to showyou, also from the past. Nu, it’ssummertime, and that’s a good seasonfor reviewing children’s entertainment,as well as its moral values. Teens, joinme in your first stab at nostalgia, as wetravel back together to the year 2002…—JK]

I recently had the great pleasure ofwatching the movie Lilo and Stitch withmy kids.

Perhaps the last three words areredundant—Disney movies, I have felt, are, like kite flying, visiting the zoo, orrolling down a hill sideways, a form ofrecreation requiring the company ofchildren.

Ha Kol Information

From the Rabbi’s Study...

Never mind. See this movie, with orwithout kids, if only to hear a little girlsay,“Oh, good! My dog found the chainsaw,” and mean it.

I just wish I had been a bartender at themeeting where this movie was thoughtup.“Let’s make a show about aliens,Hawaii, and Elvis.”

“Okay.”

There is an awful lot to like about thissilly movie—the actress voicing Lilo isespecially good—but best of all are theTorah values in it. In terms of Torah, Ihave been waiting for this movieliterally for years.

I love this film because it corrects somebad values that our kids receive ontelevision from Barney. Now,we all hateBarney, especially kids who grew upwith him only to discover that thepurple dinosaur they thought theyloved was an idiot. But those of us

steeped in the culture of television andrelatively unaware of the counterculturethat is Torah may be surprised to learnhow toxic some of the moral values ofBarney really are.

Along comes Lilo and Stitch to correcttwo terrible lessons taught by Barneyand his grimacing juvenile chorus:

Lesson #1: “Oh, a family is people and afamily is love, that’s a family.”

Lesson #2: “They come in all differentsizes and different kinds, but mine’s justright for me.”

Let’s start with Lesson #1. People andlove is not a family. People and love isshacking up.

It’s like the Torah without itsMitsvot.“Oh, the Torah is people and the Torahis God…”No obligation, nothing tofulfill. Just good feelings. TelevisionTorah.

A Message from Our President

(continued on p. 11)

I feel what is lost to a large degree is thedeep sense of belonging that comeswith communal prayer. I’m not blind tothe fact that many people do not makeit a regular practice to attend services, but, at the same time, I believe we allseek that feeling, even if only on certainholidays, of being a part of the Childrenof Israel. Now before anyone getsupset, this is not intended as anindictment of Humanistic Judaism. Forthose who see that as a viable spiritualoutlet, more power to them. My point isthat what we offer in our synagogue, aspart of the Conservative Movement, isthe opportunity to connect with our

ancient past but in a way that is still intune with modern society. We offerboth men and women congregants theopportunity for meaningfulinvolvement in spiritual life whether it’san aliyah, a Torah reading,Haftorah, leading a service or even, if you desire,an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah. No, Jewish

I came to this synagogue 18years ago because of the

sense of community I felt when I firstwalked through the front door. I haveremained here and, still to this day, feelthe incredible sense of community thatexists here. I want to thank everyonefor the warm and supportive welcometo the position of Director of Education.I am proud and excited to take thisposition and will try my best tocontinue the excellent work that RonRaben has done.

I can’t say this enough, please do NOThesitate to come to me with anyquestion or concerns regarding schoolhere at CKI. Our school has an opendoor policy, which means you arealways welcome to view a class orprivate lesson/tutoring. Just let theteacher know in advance that youwould like to observe, and I know youwill be welcomed.

One of my goals is to focus onspirituality. I will accomplish this

through guest speakers, books andmedia. I hope to expose, enlighten andexpand all of our hearts, minds andsouls during this journey.

law only sets a minimum age limit forBar Mitzvah, not a maximum.

The point is, I believe organized religionhas somehow gotten a bad rap wherethere’s this image of a group of peoplemindlessly repeating prayers for whichthere is no meaning or understandingfor them. I think nothing could befurther from the truth. If you needevidence of that, come to a Shabbatservice and listen to and take part in theTorah study discussion. To me, the mostmeaningful part of Shabbat is the Torahservice where the Torah is removedfrom the Ark and carried through theSanctuary in a procession accompaniedby some of the most beautiful liturgy. As everyone touches the Torah withtheir tallit or siddur, they are makingtheir own spiritual connection with theTorah.

Great, but what if I can’t even readHebrew? The answer is to attend our

adult education class. Saul will behappy to welcome newcomers to hisSunday class starting this fall. Also, coming to services is a great way topractice and improve those skills.Taking an aliyah need not be afrightening nor embarrassingexperience. Our Rabbi and gabayim onthe bimah are not looking for ways tointimidate or find fault with thoseattempting to read a B’racha. Ratherthey want to encourage and help thosewho are willing to accept these honors. Also, there is nothing in Jewish law thatsays only the Rabbi can lead a service.Anyone of Bar/Bat Mitzvah age andolder can do this, and for proof of that, attend both Sisterhood Shabbat andMen’s Club Shabbat this coming year.In fact, more recently during the Rabbi’svacation, your fellow congregants havebeen leading services and even TorahStudy!

I hope many of you take advantage ofSaturday morning (or Friday nightservices when they begin again inSeptember) so that you can gain anappreciation for the richness thatcommunal prayer offers.

On another topic, there has been muchdiscussion at Board meetings on wayswe can attract new membership. Oneidea that I haven’t heard much of isusing the best resource we have—ourown membership. Many of you likelyhave friends, co-workers oracquaintances who are Jewish andpossibly unaffiliated. If you do know ofsuch people, invite them to attend aservice or, better yet tell them about ourannual CKI Picnic and SchoolRegistration coming up August 24th.

See you all in shul,

From Our President(cont’d from previous page)

Sisterhood News

Ihope that everyone’s summer is goingwell. We finally are having real

summer weather. As we spend timewith our families enjoying vacationsand relaxing, just a quick reminder thatthe High Holidays are right around thecorner and, also, the start of ourupcoming 2008-2009 Sisterhood year, and we have many activities andprograms for all to enjoy. Pleasecontinue to read HaKol for all theupcoming events.

Wanda Pitzele just came back fromCentral Great Lakes RegionConference held last month. Here isher report on the event:

“I had the pleasure to attend the newCentral Great Lakes Conference inSandusky, Ohio in June. The long driveto and from Sandusky was spentvisiting with friends as we carpooled.

“This was the first gathering of womenin the newly-formed region. Wecomprise all or parts of seven states:Illinois, Indiana,Wisconsin,Michigan,Ohio, Kentucky, and westernPennsylvania. I filled two roles there—representative of Congregation KnesethIsrael Sisterhood and the incomingCreative Judaic Arts Chair, for which Ipresented a workshop on makingkippot which will identify our delegatesat Women’s League for ConservativeJudaism’s National Convention inNovember. I had fun developing theproject, using the copper spiral designthat some of you might be familiar with, and teaching basic wire working aswomen wired blue and green beadsonto the frame. It was so popular that Ihave already been contacted to helpanother Sisterhood make some for theirSisterhood Shabbat!

“The conference theme was B’reishit:New Beginnings. We studied withCantor DavidWolinsky of AgudathB’nai Israel of Larai, OH. His discussionof “Revisiting Genesis”dealt with issuessuch as: When does a day begin andend, and how do we know; What wasthe sin in the Garden of Eden and whatis sin; and Lillith, gender issuessurrounding the creation of Adam andlater Eve. Later in the conference westudied with Dr. Lifsa Shachter of the

Siegal College of Judaic Studies inCleveland with her presentation of “TheRole of Women ‘in the beginning’.” Themost interesting concept I took fromher presentation was the concept thatbefore the beginning of creation therewas something else. If we think ofbeginnings (such as birth), before thebirth of a child there is a pregnancy. There are different aspects of our ownlives that we see this concept. In termsof the new region, before Central GreatLakes Region of WLCJ, there wereCentral, KIPPOT, and Michigan Regions.

“We also had the usual workshops tohone skills in Torah Fund,Membership,Ways & Means & Gift Shops, andPresidents’Training.

“In order to help us meet new womenthroughout our region, we wereassigned different tables for mostmeals. I have to say, that there wasnever a table where I didn’t knowsomeone. The Chicago area sent about15-20 delegates. Some of the newwomen we knew from the years ofattending conventions. So while wedidn’t know everyone,we knew morethen we expected.”

Thank you,Wanda, for sharing yourexperience with us. Hope to seeeveryone at the CKI Family andRegistration Picnic being held onAugust 24!

The Pleasure of Reading

Now that the kids are away at campor pre-occupied with lots of

summer time activities, perhaps youhave a few minutes here and there to sitdown on a lawn chair (or maybe evenlie on a sandy beach) and relax! There isperhaps no better way to unwind thanwith a good book. Use summer’s lazy, hazy days to become immersed withina novel, whether it is mystery, humor,Yiddish tales, romance, or historicalfiction.

Some of the greatest 20th centuryauthors can trace their careers throughthe books of the CKI library. Several ofthe novels of Leon Uris, HarryKemelman, Chaim Potok, and HermanWouk share shelf space with the poetryof Danny Siegel.

The tales by Sholom Aleichem aretimeless: Favorite Tales and Tales of theOld Country reunite us with ourheritage. Have your read any of theseIsaac Bashevis Singer classics? Gimpelthe Fool, The Slave, Short Friday andThe Family Moskat are among a largeselection of his works.

Come Pour the Wine with CynthiaFreedman or get some chemistry in ThePeriodic Table, by Primo Levi. Lather onthe sunscreen; sit down in the shadewith Vina Delmar’s Beloved or withAnita Diamant’s The Red Tent.Wrap upyour vacation Going Home by VictorDavid Tulman.

Although there are not as manyactivities at CKI in the summer,

generally speaking, you can check outbooks from the library anytime thebuilding is open (except duringShabbat). Access to the library is alwaysavailable during normal business officehours. Feel free to come and browse.Find something you might enjoy. Bookcheck-out is on the honor system. Signand date the blue card found (usually inthe front) inside book cover and placethe card in the basket. Return yourbooks to the shelf containing the check-out basket, but please do not reshelvethe books!

Have a wonderful relaxing summer.

REASONS TO ATTEND SHABBATSERVICES OVER THE SUMMER

10. We’re open on Saturday mornings.

9. It’s cool inside.

8. We’re waiting for you.

7. There are enough chapters in theTorah to get through an entire year!

6. A little shot of somethin’ afterwardsat Kiddush.

5. Familiarizing yourself with aShabbat service will help prepareyou for High Holidays services.

4. Rabbi Kohn’s Torah talks.

3. The grass won’t grow that muchmore during the course of aSaturday morning; plus, you don’twant to wake up the neighbors, doyou?

2. You can help make aminyan andthereby help others say kaddish fortheir loved ones.

1. You’re supposed to. Remember theFourth Commandment?

A recent edition of the Compact, theUnited Synagogue of ConservativeJudaism’s monthly e-mail magazine, offered an article by Rabbi Jay Stein, ofHar Zion Temple in Philadelphia, on thesubject of whether a person couldmake aminyan by communicating withothers at the synagogue by electronicmeans (like over a phone or theinternet). The short answer is: no.

But Rabbi Stein made another pointworth considering. He wrote: “[T]heissue really at play was not connectingto God through the internet butconnecting to each other by sitting nextto one another.” Only those physically

present to hear the shliach stzibur(prayer leader) may count toward theminyan. “When the rabbis moved torequire a quorum for communal publicprayers… it seems they were opting toforce the community to come together, whereas otherwise, if one could fulfill allobligations alone, they feared thatpublic communal structures would notdevelop. They extolled the publicpraise of God.” (emphasis added)

Ourminyan needs you. Find yourself inshul.

Crisis Center Food Pantry

Each month this column focuses on theneed to feed the hungry. Nothingwould please us more than to be ableto use this space to write that hunger isno longer an issue in our community orin the world. The United Nations Foodand Agriculture Organization currentlyestimates 854 million people world-wide are undernourished. The Census2000 Data for the United States puts the

CKI Member Leonard Kofkin will speak about the pastand present life of Jews in Minsk, the capital of Belarus

and a city at the heart of the Pale of Settlement. Hewill present a slide presentation including its Jewish

monuments, its Jewish Campus and Museum, theformer ghetto area, and its synagogue.

US population at 281,421,906. To putthat in a different perpspective, thenumber of undernoursihed world wideis more than 3 times greater than thepopulation of the United States!

Surprisingly, large numbers of hungrylive in our community. With feweractivities at the shul during the summermonths, it becomes more difficult toreplish the CKI food cupboard. This isespecially unfortunate as the economyworsens and gas prices take adisportionate share of people’sincomes. Have you taken a vacationrecently? From the Rabbi’s Study(cont’d from p. 2)

Lilo and Stitch, by contrast, is emphaticto the contrary: “Family means that noone gets left behind or forgotten.”

When do they first say that? Someonewants to send an animal back to thepound, but she’s reminded that theanimal is now part of her family and soshe must keep it. She doesn’t love it. ByBarney’s standards she could throw itaway. But in this movie she’s notallowed to. It’s part of her familybecause she promised to take care of it,and because no one gets left behind.

As for Lesson #2,“mine’s just right forme,” it is perverse. It teaches thatsingle-parent families are just right forchildren, as are unstable families,

Lev v'Nefesh: Heart and Soul

This is the new themed pin for thecoming Torah Fund Campaign.

“Heart and soul is an aptmetaphor for the dualaspects-physical andspiritual-that compose thewhole self. When the Shemainstructs us daily to love Godwith all our heart and all oursoul, it means the entirety of ourbeing. Through the performance ofmitzvot, we bring these dualities intoharmony. Your support of The JewishTheological Seminary, Ziegler School ofRabbinic Studies, Schechter Institute OfJewish Studies, and Seminario Rabinico

Latinoamericano ensures the solid andhealthy future of Conservative

Judaism.”

juvenile-parent families, and absent-parent hired-caretaker families. Thelesson may comfort parents, but whatdoes it do for kids?

Kids are better served by the truth, andin this case the truth is not bad. It isthat families don’t have to be just right, that they can weather bad times just bybeing good.

This is the message of Lilo and Stitch, where one of the characters reflects onhis family: “It’s small, and it’s broken. But it’s good, it’s still good.” And wecome away believing that this familymay never be just right, or evencomplete, but that it’s going to make it.

Barney’s Lesson #2 comes directly fromhis Lesson #1. When you define a

shack-up as a family, then it has to bejust right or it gets thrown away. Onlywith commitment, and with a sense ofMitsva, is there security in hard times.

These are truths that our kids need tohear. And not just kids. Everyone canlearn from this movie about aliens,Hawaii, Elvis, dogs, and chain saws. Youshould definitely go see the movie, whoever you are. Because after all, it’s afamily show, and family means that noone is left behind.
