The mission of Legacy High School is to empower our students with educational enrichment through an understanding and appreciation of being academically motivated, culturally diverse, technologically sound, and socially respectful members of a global society.
Counselors’ cornerCounselors met with next year’s sophomores, juniors, and seniors for pre-registration. Students selected their elective choices and were also placed in compass classes, if needed, to make up required credits for graduation. A reminder that students will not be able to change electives next school year. If they wish to do so, it must be done before August 14, 2015.
Summer school registration is open for both Legacy High School and students looking to take classes through Nevada Learning Academy. Students wishing to go to summer school will need to see their counselor to sign up for classes. Summer school will run $100.00 per half credit. There will be two sessions that will be offered. Information is available in the Counseling Office.
New this year: all juniors will be taking the ACT April 28th, free of charge. This will allow them the opportunity to have scores available for college. As seniors next year, they want to be sure to check dates for both the ACT and SAT if they plan on taking the test again. Counselor’s will have that information at the beginning of the school year.
Seniors during the 2015-16 school year should keep track of all deadines for scholarships, transcripts, recommendations, etc. They should check the website and the Counseling Office for college/university representative visitations. Most local and area colleges/universities will have their representative set up visitation dates starting in September. Students will need to sign up in the Counseling Office to meet with the representative.
All information is on the Counseling Website: legacyhigh.net. If seniors want to check on scholarship information, they can click on the College/Scholarship tab. The website is updated on a regular basis.
If you have questions regarding your child/children at Legacy High School, please contact the Counseling Office and/or your child’s Counselor.

In memoryInside the theater at Lied Middle School in honor of a departed instructor, Mr. Fred, shadow boxes will be displayed that have been created and designed by the talented students at Legacy High School under the direction of furniture and cabinet making instructor, Mr. Paul Tick. Inside the shadow boxes, guitars which have been turned into works of art by Lied MS art teacher, Paula Engel, will be displayed. For example, on one guitar is a painted portrait of Mr. Fred. The dedication of the Fredrickson Theater was on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
School Board Meeting
Each month students are chosen from their schools to present to the CCSD School Board concerns and positive reactions to school policies. In January, Syndee Christensen represented Legacy High School.
Woodshop Partners with Middle SchoolsThis year, a unique partnership was formed between the Legacy High School Woodshop students and Robert O. Gibson Middle School Leadership Academy. As a magnet program, Robert O. Gibson Leadership Academy students participate in the annual Leadership in Action (LIA) Fair to present their grade level research projects as the culminating academic endeavor in the Leadership Program. This year, to elevate the presentation component of the LIA Fair, Legacy High School Woodshop students designed and built lecterns for the middle school students to use during their presentations. Leadership students raised money to pay for the lecterns, and Legacy Woodshop students will use the money to help fund a trip to Reno, NV to compete in SkillsUSA. Paul Tick; Woods Instructor

SkillsUSADuring the SkillsUSA trip we found a few hours to spare. In an effort to fill this time and engage the students in a meaningful experience, they took a short drive from Reno to our state Capitol. While in Carson City, the group accepted an invitation from our Assemblyman, Tyrone Thompson, to join him on the Assembly Floor. After being formally introduced to The Speaker of the House, Mr. Tick, Mr. Garcia, Josh Hinkson, Alex Martinez and Chance Ratcliffe were privileged to see history being made as bills were being considered and debated. Throughout this session, Mr. Thompson took time out to explain the process, give a little history of some of the more controversial bills and even share his reasons for opposing a couple of them. Mr. Tick was thrilled to have shared this experience with his students and is confident that this will be a trip not soon forgotten.
CenturyLink Grant Award Recipient
CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. The program, which has been offered since 2008, awards grants to schools in CenturyLink’s local service areas on behalf of teachers who have developed specific plans to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms.
“We were excited to see the innovation and creativity in this year’s grant applications,” said Jeremy Ferkin, CenturyLink VP of Operations West Region. “It’s encouraging to see teachers’ enthusiasm for bringing new learning tools and techniques into their classrooms, and we are pleased to be able to help expose students to more educational technology in their daily school lives.”
Across the country, more than 1,000 grant applications were received. In Las Vegas, a review committee comprised of community members and a CenturyLink representative selected eight winning schools. Matthew Totaro, from Legacy High School, was awarded $5,000 to purchase chemistry lab probe-ware for AP Chemistry students to raise student competence and experience in working with true college-level lab instruments.

Legacy High School BandThe Legacy Band Program has had such an incredible year. First, the Legacy Marching Band and Color Guard performed their show "Urbanicity" this past fall that people are still talking about and raving about to this day, and then the band was featured on 8 News Now's "What's Cool At School" and won the $250 cash prize for the viewer's poll!
Then, the two Legacy concert bands (Legacy Wind Ensemble - pictured top; Legacy Symphonic Band - pictured bottom) both attended and performed at the CCSD Band Festival this past March. Both bands received STRAIGHT SUPERIOR ratings for their performances. In addition the Wind Ensemble received Superior Ratings in scales, sight reading, and posture/presentation. The Symphonic Band received Superior Ratings in scales and posture/presentation, and an Excellent Rating in sight reading. Huge congratulations go to the Legacy Bands for such an incredible school year and for all their hard work in making the Legacy Band Program one of the top programs in the CCSD!

Straight A Honor Roll
Fall AP SpanishStudents wishing to take a foreign language at Legacy High School should complete the Clark County School District Placement Exam prior to next fall. The WebCAPE Language Placement Exam was developed by the Bringham young University Humanities Technology and Research Support Center. It is designed to help you determine which level of a foreign language course you should take, based on your ability. This exam is only for students who already know a foreign language. NOTE: All native Spanish-speakers are required to complete this assessment prior to enrolling in any Spanish language course.
The exam presents questions of different ability levels, adapting the next question's level according to your answers. The number of items you will be required to complete depends upon your ability to use the language. When the exam is completed, it indicates an overall ability score and corresponding course. The results are then available to you and your counselor for evaluation.
The link to this assessment can be found on our school's website at www.legacyhigh.net. Simply click on the tab for Academics and then Curricula and scroll down on the right-hand side of the page and click on Language Placement Test. The password to take the assessment is also located on this page.
H.E.L.P. ClubHealing • Empowerment Leadership • Positivity
Legacy High School’s HELP club is hereby established to provide an opportunity for Legacy High School students to promote and provide a positive environment for each and every student of Legacy High School. The club goals are to establish a HELP (Healing, Empowerment, Leadership & Positivity) zone and a support group for individuals who need assistance coping with negative situations in their lives. The HELP club is committed to the equitable treatment of Legacy High School’s diverse student body. We will also publicize the effects of negativity, insensitivity, inequity and bullying by holding events for Legacy High School students. We will participate in school assemblies and get involved in activities in the surrounding community that promotes positivity. Our final objective is to insure equality for each and every student, staff member, and parent.
Earth Day Art FinalistsIn celebration of Earth Day the City of Las Vegas partnered with Republic Services and keep Las Vegas Beautiful to sponsored a "Sus'tain'a'ble" Earth Day Art contest. After receiving over 600 entries three students from the Legacy Project youth Council represented Legacy High School and made it to the top ten finalists for high school students. On Saturday April 18, 2015 at Town Square, the winners were announced: Justin Rodriguez 12th Gr. (finalist), Michelle Jones 12th Gr. (Honorable Mention), and Michelle Quiroz 12th Gr. (2nd place winner).

Fashion Club Trip to FIDMFashion Club woke up bright and early on Friday, March 20th to ride a bus to Los Angeles. They toured the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising campus followed by attending a Fashion Show in Santa Monica. They got to attend an exclusive pre-show party including appetizers, a chocolate fountain, an eyelash application stand, and the opportunity to network with other aspiring fashion designers. The Fashion Show took place in an airplane hanger. There's nothing like getting home in the wee hours of the morning...3:00am. It was a fun adventure for sure! Big thanks to Ms. Humphrey, Mr. Rudolph and Ms. Spackman for being the fearless chaperones for the trip!

On behalf of NASC, I want to congratulate you on the occasion of your student council being recognized as a 2015 NASC National Gold Council of Excellence. This was no small task and your students’ success in earning the award is a testament to the leadership and support you give to them, and to the value placed on student council as an integral part of your school and its educational mission.
To further recognize and commemorate your student council’s accomplishment, please accept the attached NASC National Gold Council of Excellence seal. I hope that you will display it proudly on your school’s website or council webpage. The seal is in JPG format and pre-sized for easy placement on the web and in electronic media such as school newsletters and emails.
