We are pleased to offer our 2019 Annual Report. Clarehouse would not exist without the generous support of donors who value our mission of providing a loving home and care for dying people. We have been honored to care for our community since 2003 and are grateful for the broad-based support that makes our care free to all we serve.

This year, we’ve seen the intensity of our guests’ experience increase as the length of stay in our home continues to shorten. We’ve witnessed increased stress infamilies as they struggle to cope with rapidly evolving situations. These dynamics reinforce the need for the good work of our education outreach as we empower goals of care conversations, caregiver advocacy and hands-on end-of-life care experience for healthcare students.

Experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime (we hope) disaster challenged us this pastsummer as our home flooded and we were displaced for 11 weeks. That broad base of support kicked in and supported us through remediation and restoration and celebrated with us as we re-opened and resumed care. Hardship has honed our awareness of the impact of the care we offer and given us renewed appreciation for the beauty, peace and comfort of our home. We turn to a new year inspired to reach new heights as we strive to improve the quality of life’s end for all.

A Family StoryThis year, we had the privilege of caring for Joyce at the end of her life. Hergrandson, Daniel Flatt, wrote us a beautiful letter sharing how much our caremeant to her and their entire family. Here are some of his thoughts –

We often do not know the time we have left on this earth, and I’ve come tounderstand that as an infinite blessing. How frightening it must be to know thatyou face an imminent end, that it is coming in a matter of weeks, and to facethe fact that you can no longer care for yourself.

Joyce came to us in August, and we loved her and cared for her during herlast 14 days of life. Daniel continues –

She said she experienced some of the deepest kindness and concern that she ever had within her life here on earth. And she was touched and moved at the sincerity of your love. Every time I had a chance to talk to her she would alwaysmention how wonderful everyone there was; even in the worst time in her life she was able to look around her and find joy in your company, and I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am to you for that.

When you know you are losing someone you love dearly in an imminent manner it isso extremely difficult, but it is also a situation in which people don’t often findthemselves. It is a place of uncertainty and one of immense financial stress as yousort through options that you have no means to make work.

Finding Clarehouse, discovering that their world class services and unmatchedkindness is completely without cost, was something that nearly made us weep with relief. To be honest we were worried, as was Granny, that maybe you would get what you ultimately paid for, but that worry was laid to rest the moment we walked through the doors. The generosity, kindness, and patience of the people within that building seem to almost fill it, and upon walking in you feel a presence of deep calm.

This did not feel like a place you went to die, it felt like a place you went to live out the last days of your life in peace and happiness. And so it was.

“There are people like me who are filled with

such hope at thekindness of strangers that it restores some of my faith in humanity.

What you do is lovepersonified, and even after all of these words,

I feel I do not do itjustice, so let me just end it with saying this:

thank you, from thebottom of my heart.”

- Daniel Flatt 3

Clarehouse care staff live out their passion for respectful end-of-life care through their work at the bedside with our guests and in support of their loved ones.

In the last year, Clarehouse received over 1,000 guest referrals from 30+ hospices in Oklahoma and surrounding states. We recognize that new challenges come with serving this need in the face of a changing hospice population. An emerging trend is an increase in the number of people entering their hospice relationship on the same day they are admitted to Clarehouse. Many people arecoming directly from a hospital environment with a new end-of-life diagnosis. They and their families have not had the benefit of time to absorb this dramatic life change or to develop a trustingrelationship with their care providers. This brings an elevated need for support, knowledge andinformation for our guests and families.

Many Clarehouse care staff hold certification through the Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association. Employing staff that is so invested in providing excellent, best practice care has rewarded Clarehouse with very low staff turnover.

PAYING ITFORWARD

We are incredibly grateful for this year’s 2,082 individuals, foundations, corporations and organizations who made our work possible. Without any governmental funding or reimbursement from insurance companies, this support enables us to provide our services free of charge. 84% of expenses is spent specifically on program initiatives, which includes providing quality end-of-life supportive care and various educational programs. We’ve consistently kept our general and administrative expenses under 5% of total expenses over the last three years as we seek to be prudent with the resources provided to Clarehouse. 2019 wasanother great year of community support and positive results in our endowments.

Our fiscal 2020 year was off to a challenging start with the forced evacuation and displacement from our home caused by flooding. However, our team used this time to make process improvements prior to us re-opening in November. We are still determining the total financial impact this will have but are blessed by the gifts and support we’ve received from the community. Thank you for being a part of this amazing work. We are forever grateful.

Included in this report are highlights from our financial statements. A complete copy of the audited financial statements is available upon request. If you have any questions, please contact David Stiles, Treasurer, [email protected].

Our service to guests, families and the community at large wouldn’t be possible without loving and dedicated volunteers. They come with open hearts from various backgrounds and experiences. Guests, families, staff and all those that enter Clarehouse are blessed by their joy and energy. There are many roles to fill and countless ways to provide service. Clarehouse volunteers are involved in everything from direct guest care to special events in the community. Individuals contribute thousands of hours and groups from schools, clubs, faith communities and businesses attend to large projects throughout the year.

“I’ve been fortunate to volunteer at Clarehouse for almost two years. This year, I had the chance to help out at Moonstruck and was blown awayseeing how many people were brought together because of their appreciation for Clarehouse.

Experiencing the buzz of excitement for the re-opening reminded me how proud I am to be a part of such a great organization.

Clarehouse is the perfect place in Tulsa to give back and get plugged in to the community. ”
