Blaming the media for societyrsquos problemsis a time-honored tradition reserved forpeople who are usually in trouble cannot

take the heat of their own actions or simply areangry about an issue Whether a politician sportsathlete or even a movie star itrsquos common to pointfingers at an easy public target In other wordswhen all else fails shoot the messenger

The media has become an easy target because public opin-ion of journalists is at an all-time low So itrsquos not surprisingthat on careercastcom newspaper reporter was ranked 199 outof the top 200 best (or worst) jobs to have Only lumberjackwas lower Photojournalist did not fare much better coming inat 186

When asked the question ldquoDo you trust journalistsrdquo respon-dents in most surveys answered ldquoyesrdquo only 20-30 percent of the time And that number is only getting smaller

So whatrsquos happening here The standards for accurate re-porting have been eroded Opinion gets mixed up with report-ing Social media gets mixed up with news media withwebsites like Twitter or Facebook becoming a key informationsource for millions of people Anyone can be a journalist pub-

lisher blogger or somewhere in between Accuracy has be-come an option rather than an important necessityIn a rush to publish information as quickly as possible fact-

checking gets sloppy or forgotten Or therersquos simply no desireto get the other side of the story The Rolling Stonersquos report onrape at the University of Virginia is a recent example wherevetting the subjectrsquos story would have yielded a far differentresult if a story at all Because of these factors the media issimply an easy target In some cases it is deserved But the ma-

jority of time it is notThe liberal media is often blamed by conservatives for their

woes yet even President Obama took a swipe about how nega-tive economic news on television causes Americans to feeloverly anxious After announcing there would not be any in-dictment of police officer Darren Wilson highly-criticizedprosecutor Bob McCulloch railed against the media (mostlysocial media) for hampering the investigation

ldquoThe most significant challenge encountered in this investigation has been the 24-hour news cycle and its insatiable ap-petite for something for anything to talk aboutrdquo he said Inthis case it was the messenger trying to shoot another messenger

Sony gets hacked and cancels their movie The InterviewTime to blame the media Even Aaron Sorkin the main writerfor HBOrsquos The Newsroom described news outlets reportingon the incident as ldquomorally treasonous and spectacularly dis-honorablerdquo Hollywood seemed to be in agreement

I find this quite odd coming from a person who based an entire TV series on the nuances of reporting news

In all these cases opinion was clearly mixed with unbiasedreporting thus causing more negative opinions instead of fo-cusing on the facts of the story

That is precisely why the COURIER elected to minimize

our opinion columns during our years-long coverage of thecityrsquos fight with Golden State Water (GSW) It wasnrsquot until ouofficial endorsement a few weeks before the Measure W votethat we took a public opinion Even GSW must admit they haevery opportunity to voice opinions in the pages of theCOURIER

Because there was a clear line between reporting and opin-ion our news stories carried more credibility Yes there wasfinger pointing but not at the messenger And thatrsquos the way ishould be

As we look to the future the lines between accurate report-ing biased reporting and opinion will only get more blurredespecially with social media becoming a more common sourcfor news and information

For 2015 the COURIER will continue to reach out to read-ers in new and exciting ways We will also stay committed toreporting facts in a timely clear and objective fashion

Country Villa Claremontheld a unique celebrationlast Friday as two of its

own marked a milestone birthdayin 2014 Residents Maria Ysacoff and Virginia Morgan were theguests of honor as both centenari-ans celebrated another year

Ms Ysacoff turned 100 on December 22while Ms Morgan celebrated her centennialon October 25 At 99 resident Jean Elan was

also recognized for her December 2 birthdayalthough she was unable to attend the party

ldquoItrsquos important to acknowledge thesemilestonesrdquo said Adriana Palafox activitiesdirector at Country Villa Claremont ldquoIthelps the residents stay activerdquo

The centennial celebration was commem-orated with an intimate party in the FiresideRoom at the 83-resident facility wherefriends and family members joined in theparty Balloons holiday music and festivedecor filled the room as care center employ-ees served up sandwiches fruit and birthdaycake to guests

Amid talk of longing for tacos marzipanand a trip to Las Vegas Ms Ysacoff re-

flected on life as a centenarian as she chat-

slew of toys for kids that might otherwisehave gone without presents No matter your

location in the city there was a local drop-box site just waiting for donations Toys forTots and Spark of Love accepted the com-munityrsquos heartfelt contributions in the hopesof brightening a childrsquos Christmas

Wheeler Steffen Sothebyrsquos International Realty was just one of several official drop-off locations for the USMarine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots a program designedto collect new unwrapped toys each year and distributethe goodies as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children inthe community

The office lobby was filled with over 100 toys withmore donations coming in past the December 19 dead-line The toys are picked up in Claremont and taken toCamp Pendleton where they will be sorted by gender andage and gifted to the kids

Sandra Reyes Toys for Tots coordinator for the Ma-rine Corps has been working with the program for 12years As the wife of a retired Marine she knows the im-pact a donation can have on a child and says the whole ex-perience is very humbling

ldquoNowhere else in the world are people so blessed tolive the lifestyle they want to live and our military givesus the chance to do thisrdquo she says ldquoThere are lost of kidsin the US who go without every day We need to take careof our kids here firstrdquo

Just up the road at the Los Angeles County Fire Station102 a steady stream of cars stopped by as residentshanded off their toy donations for the Spark of Love toydrive on December 20

Bikes Lego sets and stuffed animals filled the bins out-side the fire station where donors were greeted by volun-teers with Little Hands Helping Others and the Los

Angeles County Sheriffrsquos Department as well as Clare-mont Police Department Explorers

ldquoServing the community always puts a smile on myface ldquo said Claremont Police Department Explorer RaulDe La O ldquoThe people donating these toys are makingsure that kids in need are going to have a good ChristmasIrsquom happy to he a part of thatrdquo

For the second year in a row Keeping the Good in OurNeighborhood (KGNH) helped to coordinate the eventand spread the word quickly with the help of social mediaand a strong list of contacts Community partners Moun-tain View Chevy Claremont ToyotaVolkswagen Infinitiof Montclair Claremont DoubleTree CBAA and Lyon

Homes as well as the cities of Claremont and La Verne as-sisted in the effort to benefit the children in need

As with last year Granite CreekKidCare has providedthe venue for distribution

ldquoWe found out about it on Mondayrdquo said Betty Crockerfounder of KGNH ldquoI immediately reached out to AxelGarcia Sr and Little Hands Helping Others and by Satur-day we were able to include law enforcement and helpserve our public safety partners Itrsquos a wonderful thingrdquo

Mr Garcia and his wife Carolina together with their

sons 10-year-old Axel Jr and 8-year-old Christianquickly sprang into action The family is no stranger to agood cause Axel Jr made local headlines in December2012 when he started a school-wide toy drive at Sum-nerDanbury Elementary School to benefit Toys for TotsThrough his efforts more than 3000 toys were collectedand donated to more than 250 needy families in time forChristmas and he was later recognized by the city of Claremont for his philanthropy

Sadly with each passing year the number of familiesin need continues to climb

ldquoWersquove confirmed there are at least 300 families inneed this yearrdquo said Mr Garcia ldquoWe were able to provide

a toy for every child through the generosity of our community membersrdquo

The Claremont Police Department helped to jumpstathe toy drive with a squad car filled with toys DetectivCorporal Dave Hardin and Officer Steve Sidenfaderolled up to the station on Friday and delivered over $25in toys including sports equipment Barbiersquos and game

Fellow centenarian Virginia Morgan was born inLos Angeles in 1914

One of 10 children she worked as a fashion modelat Bullockrsquos in her early years before marrying herhusband Fritz who predeceased her The couple hadtwo children and made their life in San Marino beforemoving to Claremont in 1965

A homemaker philanthropist and devoted CatholicMs Morgan attended Our Lady Of Assumption andvolunteered at Pomona Valley Hospital For 10 yearsshe served in both the gift shop and assisted with thesick babies in the maternity ward

ldquoI would give photos of the babies to the newmothersrdquo she recalled

In her later years Ms Morgan has enjoyed flowers

tea parties and the company of friends including LisaDom the centenarianrsquos caregiver for the past 17years who visits with her four days a week

ldquoShersquos looking forward to a visit from her sonDick his wife Karen and her two grandchildren Kateand Christopher on Sundayrdquo said Ms Dom ldquoTheyrsquorecoming from Colorado and I know they wish theycould have been here for the celebrationrdquo

Kaitlin Salkham was traveling on thewrong side of College Avenue fornearly five blocks around 2 am Ac-cording to Lieutenant Mike Ciszek the24-year-old had encountered police 40minutes earlier at a party where theyadvised her not to drive as she was in-toxicated According to the ClaremontPD Ms Salkham had tried to schedulea pick up from Uber but the driver re-fused saying she had too much todrink Officers met up with MsSalkham later that night this time be-hind the wheel and determined she wasmore than twice the legal limit The

Thursday December 18Things got a bit rough at Claremont

High School last week when two teenswere arrested for attacking another stu-dent The 17-year-old male victim wasapproached in the school parking lotand then repeatedly punched in the faceby two male suspects The teen suffereda one-inch laceration between his lefteye and eyebrow requiring four stitchesto close Itrsquos unclear what triggered theconfrontation between the boys

Sunday December 21The signs may have been pointing in

the right direction but one Rancho Cu-camonga driver clearly didnrsquot heed thewarning Andrea Moser was sitting inthe driverrsquos side of her car with the en-gine on facing the wrong direction in aone-way northbound alley when offi-cers approached her vehicle around130 am Officers noted Ms Moserwas parked about 15 feet from a ldquoDoNot EnterOne Wayrdquo sign and exhibitedsigns of intoxication The 25-year-olddriver had also encountered police ear-lier in evening and was advised sheshouldnrsquot drive but dismissed the ad-vice Police found Ms Moser passedout behind the wheel and arrested herfor DUI

the Single Plan for Student Achieve-ment (SPSA) for both Vista del Valleand Sycamore Elementary schools

For both schools presenting the an-nual report on the schoolrsquos performancin meeting last yearrsquos goals and onprogress toward this yearrsquos aims in-volved some winging it Schools are required to present an SPSA each yearunder No Child Left Behind the bulk

of which involves academic goals Anyet given that this is the first year thatCommon Core assessments will be undertaken by students school site coun-cils have been without an officialmanner of measuring improvement insubjects like math and English Lan-guage Arts (ELA)

I just finished a three-day art and craftshow with 29 other artists One of them a wood carver had made an as-

semblage of small items that she had col-

lected over the years during her travels inIndia She had small figures Buddhassaintsrsquo heads and wooden metal ceramicand glass symbolic bits that she had ad-hered in mosaic fashion along with stonesand glass pieces It was dynamic colorfuland reminded me of what I loved aboutIndia

It breathed and throbbed a vibrancy that I have onlyexperienced throughout my travels there over theyears India is not always an easy place to visit Thecontrasts are great the poverty can be difficult to dealwith and the culture and spirituality can be difficult tounderstand The food can be very spicy and theweather very hot and humid People can get into your

face Drinking the water can be dangerous One candevelop all sorts of fears if allowed These are thenegative aspects which often keeps people from goingto India and exploring the variety of life there But Iwas lucky I was introduced to Indian travel by anEnglish friend who has loved it passionately and hasspent many years happily immersing herself in thevarious areas of the country living with local people ina simple manner and enjoying every moment of it

India is not dull and boring It is multi-layeredfilled with pockets of expats who cannot leave or whoreturn faithfully year after year pulled back by theboldness of life One need not feel alone as people arefriendly and are usually ready to share their lives andthoughts with foreigners Once in Jaipur in Rajasthanwe met a man on the street who made puppets and didpuppet shows representing local story characters and

animals His puppets were made with great imagina-tion and delicacy He invited us to his house I admitthat I was nervous about going but luckily my friendwas not and so we followed him

He lived with his extended family on the pavementin a large tent made of tarps and blankets and filledwith boxes and people In the end he gave a puppetshow for us and the local children on the porch of aneighborrsquos house Other times we were asked to joinwedding parties Christenings and other festivities andto be photographed with couples holding babies andsmiling along with them Openness and kindnessabound

India is so full of color from the landscapemdashfrom

trees village gardens rice fields and tea plantations tothe color of the paintings and designs on the housesmdashthe ground decorations so carefully designed withcolored dry paints and so easily ldquoerasedrdquo in a day orso Cows are decorated Saris and other beautifullydraped flowing fabric dresses come in the most beau-tiful colors and float in the breezes as the womencarry great burdens on their heads seeming to moveso easily along the road

Markets are so alive and exciting to wanderthrough The piles of fruits and vegetables are beauti-fully arranged and the flower sellers are perched abovetheir orange marigolds busily creating wreathes whileyou watch The smells from perfumed oils floral aro-mas and rotting foodstuff mixed with spices and cur-ries create a heady experience Fabric sellers andtailors sit next to women selling fresh herbs and veg-

etables A man sweeps away scraps which he piles upin front of the market for the wandering cows tobrowse through It is busy bustling crowded sad and

joyful all at the same time Poverty is everywherealongside an overabundance of everything Smallshrines exist everywhere with offerings placed on

them There is shouting and pushing there is serenityand acceptance there is noise and there is prayer

I have been lucky to have traveled in the northwesand the northeast of India I have spent time in bigcities I have visited the south been to ashrams goneto hill stations and stayed at retreats where I was masaged and oiled I have discovered delicious foodsand tried new tastes and returned to my favorite oldones I have been up mountains for the cool air andon rivers enjoying the diversity of life

Yes I have seen great poverty in people who liveall of their lives on the sidewalk of children whobuzz around begging for money and clearly do notwant food There are old grannies on grain sacks begging and legless men on skateboards asking for helpIndia is very much alive There is great diversity of language of religion from the Saddus or Holy men t

the Hindus Muslims and Christians and even a verytiny Jewish enclave in Kerala in the southern partIndia is exciting and bewildering fun and over-whelming

On my last trip to the southern part of Indian westayed in wonderful guest houses where kindnessoverflowed I once stayed in a very posh hotel inDelhi which was like visiting a storybook and Irsquovestayed in extremely simple accommodations inMysore Each of these was an experience that en-riched my stays and opened my eyes to life so different from my own

One year ago I was getting ready for a six-weekvisit to Southern India This year I am not and I amaware of how much I miss it India throbs with lifeAll ones senses are on alert And so today I amdreaming of India

Students participating in the International Baccalau-reate (IB) program at Claremont High School continueto demonstrate exceptional results The IB worldwidepass rates based on the May 2014 exams were re-cently released and reveal that 793 percent of studentsworldwide passed IB exams with a score of 4 or higher

The pass rate for Claremont High School IB studentswas 869 percent Since the inception of the IB pro-gram at Claremont High School our students havecontinually surpassed the worldwide pass rate

Claremont High School boysrsquo water polo finishedfirst in the Palomares League with an undefeatedrecord and for the first time in 47 years brought homea CIF championship Congratulations to Coach KristinMcKown her coaching staff and the entire team for anoutstanding season

Congratulations are also extended to San AntonioHigh School for being named a 2014 Model Continua-tion High School The Model Continuation HighSchool Recognition Program identifies and recognizes

outstanding programs and creates a resource list of quality programs for school visitations These schoolsprovide comprehensive services to at-risk youththrough the use of exemplary instructional strategiesflexible scheduling and guidance and counseling serv-ices

The Education Trust-West released a report identify-ing top-performing districts serving Californiarsquos Eng-lish Learners The report included an analysis of datafrom 276 unified school districts based on their per-formance on four indicators The report identified dis-tricts rising to the top on each metric as well as 11districts that realized exceptional performance on threeof the four indicators Out of the 276 districts studiedClaremont is one of only 11 districts to be recognizedfor having met three of the four metrics

Claremont Unified School District is one of 10 dis-tricts that comprise the East San Gabriel Valley Special

Education Local Planning Area (SELPA) For the past40 years districts in the SELPA have been utilizing theeducational services of the Los Angeles County Officeof Education to provide services to students with mod-erate to severe disabilities

With the desire to provide students with better edu-cational opportunities the SELPA and district directorsidentified specialized programs for the moderate to se-

vere disability populations that would be supported locally by each of the 10 districts CUSD became theprovider district for students with moderate and severemedically fragile needs within the SELPA and isproud to be able to provide meaningful opportunitiesand quality programs that meet the unique needs of every student

Professional development continues to be an area ofocus for this year In August a student-free day wasprovided in order to bring all district staff together toreceive training on our transition to the Common CoreState Standards (CCSS) Additional trainings havebeen held throughout the year which have included dveloping new units of study that align with the CCSS

Teachers have been working diligently to preparestudents to be globally competitive by focusing on 21century skills including an emphasis on creativitycommunication collaboration and critical thinkingOver 2000 iPads have been deployed this year sup-porting 21st century learning and the districtrsquos technology vision This was possible in part by the support othe Claremont Educational Foundation and individualParent Faculty Associations

Claremont Real Estate Market Snapshot

This is perhaps the most interesting market snapshot since I started writing themlast year The biggest tell from the data is that last year there was a significantly

lower number of sales A decline is sales is usually expected during November asthe holiday season almost always experiences a slowing of the market Howeverwith 30 homes sold November 2014 was no different than the months prior Alsoof interest is it would appear at first glance that the market has dipped 19 percentyear-over-year which would be an alarming statistic to say the least But when youlook more closely at the 2013 data you will see it contains a far smaller sample ofhome sales and includes a massive $36 million sale which skewed the averagesupward After removing that single sale from the data and re-calculating the aver-ages I found a realistic interpretation of the market pricesmdashan increase on aver-age in 2014 by approximately 3 percent A far more pleasant pill to swallow

Blaming the media for societyrsquos problemsis a time-honored tradition reserved forpeople who are usually in trouble cannot

take the heat of their own actions or simply areangry about an issue Whether a politician sportsathlete or even a movie star itrsquos common to pointfingers at an easy public target In other wordswhen all else fails shoot the messenger

The media has become an easy target because public opin-ion of journalists is at an all-time low So itrsquos not surprisingthat on careercastcom newspaper reporter was ranked 199 outof the top 200 best (or worst) jobs to have Only lumberjackwas lower Photojournalist did not fare much better coming inat 186

When asked the question ldquoDo you trust journalistsrdquo respon-dents in most surveys answered ldquoyesrdquo only 20-30 percent of the time And that number is only getting smaller

So whatrsquos happening here The standards for accurate re-porting have been eroded Opinion gets mixed up with report-ing Social media gets mixed up with news media withwebsites like Twitter or Facebook becoming a key informationsource for millions of people Anyone can be a journalist pub-

lisher blogger or somewhere in between Accuracy has be-come an option rather than an important necessityIn a rush to publish information as quickly as possible fact-

checking gets sloppy or forgotten Or therersquos simply no desireto get the other side of the story The Rolling Stonersquos report onrape at the University of Virginia is a recent example wherevetting the subjectrsquos story would have yielded a far differentresult if a story at all Because of these factors the media issimply an easy target In some cases it is deserved But the ma-

jority of time it is notThe liberal media is often blamed by conservatives for their

woes yet even President Obama took a swipe about how nega-tive economic news on television causes Americans to feeloverly anxious After announcing there would not be any in-dictment of police officer Darren Wilson highly-criticizedprosecutor Bob McCulloch railed against the media (mostlysocial media) for hampering the investigation

ldquoThe most significant challenge encountered in this investigation has been the 24-hour news cycle and its insatiable ap-petite for something for anything to talk aboutrdquo he said Inthis case it was the messenger trying to shoot another messenger

Sony gets hacked and cancels their movie The InterviewTime to blame the media Even Aaron Sorkin the main writerfor HBOrsquos The Newsroom described news outlets reportingon the incident as ldquomorally treasonous and spectacularly dis-honorablerdquo Hollywood seemed to be in agreement

I find this quite odd coming from a person who based an entire TV series on the nuances of reporting news

In all these cases opinion was clearly mixed with unbiasedreporting thus causing more negative opinions instead of fo-cusing on the facts of the story

That is precisely why the COURIER elected to minimize

our opinion columns during our years-long coverage of thecityrsquos fight with Golden State Water (GSW) It wasnrsquot until ouofficial endorsement a few weeks before the Measure W votethat we took a public opinion Even GSW must admit they haevery opportunity to voice opinions in the pages of theCOURIER

Because there was a clear line between reporting and opin-ion our news stories carried more credibility Yes there wasfinger pointing but not at the messenger And thatrsquos the way ishould be

As we look to the future the lines between accurate report-ing biased reporting and opinion will only get more blurredespecially with social media becoming a more common sourcfor news and information

For 2015 the COURIER will continue to reach out to read-ers in new and exciting ways We will also stay committed toreporting facts in a timely clear and objective fashion
