Message from the CEOEnergy is one of the most important sectors in the world economy today – and one whose strategic importance increases daily.
Increased future demand, economic growth in the developing world, changing geopolitical realities, mounting international demands for sustainability and a response to the dangers of climate change; all these factors and more will continue to build pressure on the industry to invest in the development and deployment of new methods of production, power generation, transmission and metering.
For the oil, gas and coal industries, for power generators, and for utilities, it has never been more important to understand the current and future impacts of technology, consumer behaviour and regulation.
Clarion Events exist to serve the information and partnership needs thrown up by these challenges and opportunities. Our Synergy, Spintelligent, Energy Exchange and World Refining Association brands have achieved worldwide recognition for conferences and exhibitions in upstream and downstream oil and gas, energy trading, metering, transmission and distribution sectors.
Strong and long-standing relationships with governments, major energy producers and all the leading utilities worldwide have helped us to attract more than 50,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries in the last 10 years, many of whom return to our events annually to keep abreast of new developments, renew existing relationships, and create new ones.
We take pride in producing highly targeted, senior level events created to deliver knowledge and fantastic networking opportunities. Whether for 100 people or 3000, they are designed with one thing in mind, to help our customers grow and drive their business forward.
This prospectus is designed to tell you a little more about how we try to do this. I hope you find it informative and I look forward to welcoming you personally to one of our events soon.
Best wishes,
Russell Wilcox Chief Executive, Conferences Clarion Events

Utilities Metering, T&D and Smart Grids The smart grid is arguably the most important and far reaching change in the history of energy delivery, with smarter energy use promising future sustainability and security of supply. Driven largely by environmental considerations, the high profile accorded the smart grid in the United States has resulted in smart grids and the underlying smart metering rapidly becoming a global issue, with projects emerging in every region of the world.
With more than 250 million smart meters projected by 2015, and a market value approaching $50 billion, the industry is on the brink of major expansion as demand management, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, renewable and home generation, home area networks, smart appliances and improved customer service – all facilitated by the smart grid – become the norm.
Key to the development of smart grids is open standards ensuring interoperability of meters and other devices and systems, and rapid progress is being made in the US, enabling utilities to proceed with greater confidence as the ARRA stimulus funds are released into the market. Similarly EU-mandated rollouts are now picking up in Europe, as they are also in countries as diverse as Brazil, India and China.
The rapid convergence of smart grid, metering, billing and CRM/CIS systems and strategies in a competitive marketplace provides unprecedented opportunities for those players positioned to provide future proof solutions.

Energy Upstream Oil and Gas
Mohammed Ahmad Husain, Deputy Managing Director, Planning and Gas, Kuwait Oil Company
24 25
Energy: Upstream Oil and Gas Recent demand forecasts predict a 50% increase in oil and gas supplies through to 2030. Based on this widely believed forecast, there is a significant deficit in current supply levels with demand outstripping current production considerably. New oil and gas reserves are getting harder and more expensive to find and produce with many exploration areas now based in ‘frontier regions’ such as deep water and challenging climatic areas such as the Arctic.
Some countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Asia, Latin America and Russia, have restrictive access to IOCs, meaning opportunities for global oil and gas companies remain, but with much higher risk scenarios.
As many oil and gas companies deal with day-to-day challenges emanating from the current financial crisis, they continue to keep an eye on the future and look at how their available assets can be used to fund new programs, partnerships and acquisitions that increase their access to potential oil and gas reserves world wide, increase diversity of supply and promote cleaner and more efficient energy supplies.
A key tool for many in keeping abreast of emerging opportunities in the upstream oil and gas sectors includes attendance at Energy Exchange hosted events.
These international summits, conferences and seminars have established themselves as leading industry meeting places, where the principal influencers gather to assess the latest strategic and technical challenges.

Sultan Al Mehairi, Director, Marketing and Refining, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)
30 31
Energy: Downstream Oil and Gas Despite low oil prices and falling consumption rates in 2009, global legislation aimed at producing cleaner and more efficient fuels is forcing oil refiners to continue to invest in the upgrading of refining facilities to deliver the high quality fuels now demanded. The Middle East region continues its aggressive plan to capture a large share of the fuel supply market with a number of new downstream facilities coming on stream now and in the near future.
Looking further ahead, the IEA forecasts an increase in total demand for energy by 50% through to 2030 ensuring that that fossil-based energy – oil, gas and coal – will remain a dominant source of energy supplies in the foreseeable future.
In line with these key industry drivers, the World Refining Association has established itself as the world’s leading provider of high level strategic and technical focused refining and petrochemical industry forums. Strong and long standing relationships with governments and major oil and petrochemical producers worldwide, result in audiences of key decision makers from across the globe who actively influence and drive the industry forward.
