As we patiently wait for the weather to improve, I would ask all Brothers and Sisters to take a moment to pause in your lives to reflect on how each of us can have a new beginning and renew our commitment to our council, church and community. I am feeling confident and elated that so many things are beginning to show signs of life again. I’ll briefly describe some of our achievements: The Columbus Club continues to move forward with the necessary paper work for a contract to purchase the convent. Our K of C Seniors had their Annual Luncheon at Verdi’s which was lots of fun. The Special Olympics Basketball Tournament was a great success under the supervision of Warden Joe Abberton and his volunteers who helped and supported this terrific event. A special thanks to the Fourth Degree Color Guard for the opening ceremony; the display of patriotism lifts everyone’s spirits. The Forty Cans for Lent food- drive was overwhelmingly achieved; we exceeded our goal of 1000 lbs. thus enabling us to receive a $100 rebate from Supreme. This drive was the combined effort of the Knights and our Sister Columbiettes who gathered their forces to collect for our churches pantry’s. It isn’t over, we always need food for families, please continue your charitable donations and time to help the less fortunate. Bring more items to the May meeting and maybe we can reach 1000 lbs. again and qualify for another rebate. PGK Harry O’Connor arranged for a CPR class on April 28. This is something we needed, but I hope we never have to use. We had our first official Recruitment Drive at Holy Spirit Church over the weekend of April 14- 15 and the following weekend we held a drive at Our Lady of Snows Church. Hopefully, those men and women who showed interest will become future Knights and Columbiettes. The Nassau Chapter recently recognized two of our Past Grand Knights: Brian Ennis for Knight of the Year and Harry O’Connor as editor of the Clarion received 3 rd Place in the chapters bulletin contest. Congratulations to both of them for their well-deserved awards! Time does not stand still; we will have our final nomination of officers for the 2018-2019 Columbian Year at our May meeting. Nominating Chairman Victor Cunneen and his committee successfully completed filling the slate of officers. The membership will vote at the June meeting. Brothers and Sisters, winter recess is over, and now we must plan for our spring and summer events. Upcoming events are: Sunday, May 20 th – Annual Pilgrimage to The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island. To Our Readers...

… with summer fast approaching, we look forward to enjoying some of Mother Nature’s better outdoor weather. As we end this Columbian Year we can proudly say we did our best in putting out a top-notch bulletin. We placed third in the Nassau Chapter Council Bulletin Contest. I thank Roy Mezzapelle of Herald Graphics for his eff orts and talent in producing our newsletter. Call Roy for all your printing needs; especially wedding and anniversary invitations. His workmanship is fi rst-rate! As always, I thank our advertisers for their continued support of the Clarion. Many of them have been with us for years. The revenue from their subscriptions helps to defray some of the cost associated with the production of this newsletter. When you use their products or services, let them know you are a K of C member! Enjoy the beginning of the summer, but keep in mind that the K of C Council meetings are held through the summer months. - The Editor

Brothers… On the cover of the April issue of Columbia magazine is the race horse Secretariat and the jockey, or should I say Brother Knight, Ron Turcotte who rode him. The issue features an interview with the Hall of Famer by Columbia Editor Alton J. Pelowski. A great article! If you already sent it to the recycle bin; access the story online at www.kofc.org Fraternally, Harry O’Connor, PGK Editor

Each month Supreme Council mails out the Columbia, the offi cial newsletter of our Order, to the membership. The magazine is fi lled with timely news articles of events taking place in other Councils and in other parts of the world as well.

Forward these magazines to your friends and family. It’s a great recruitment tool; off ering an insight of the Knight Life!

Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May to honor motherhood. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia in 1907 began a campaign for a nationwide observance of Mother’s Day. She chose the second Sunday in May and began wearing a carnation. A colored carnation means the person’s mother is living and a white carnation if the person’s mother is deceased. It wasn’t until 1914 that Mother’s Day received national recognition. On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending that Congress and the executive branch of the government observe Mother’s Day. The following year the President proclaimed Mother’s Day as an annual observance. Holy Mother Church honors Our Mother, Mary, this month - May. We too can honor Mary through prayer and devotion. Pray the Rosary!

Novena Prayer for Life Eternal Father, Source of life, Open our hearts to see and desire the beauty of your plan for life and love. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so that our love will be generous and self-giving and we may be blessed with joy. Grant us great trust in your mercy. Forgive us for not receiving your gift of life and heal us from the eff ects of the culture of death. Instill in us and in all people a sense of the sacredness of every human life. Inspire our eff orts to protect and care for the most vulnerable,-especially women who are pregnant and their unborn children, the sick and the elderly. Strengthen us in the hope that with you nothing is impossible. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who by his Cross makes all things new. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Life, Pray for us.

Visitation of theBlessed Virgin Mary

May 31 The feast commemorating the visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Elizabeth, upon being told by the Angel Gabriel that her aged cousin was with child. Originally instituted in 1389 by Urban VI, it was inserted in the Roman Calendar on July 2, on which it had already been celebrated by the Franciscan Friars since 1263. Now celebrated on the last day of May, between the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord and the Birth of St. John the Baptizer, to conform more closely with the Gospel account; Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was fi lled with the Holy Spirit and said in a loud voice, You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you bear! Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord’s mother comes to visit me? For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. How happy you are to believe that the Lord’s message to you will come true!” Luke 1:39-45
