Dear Clark Families,

We have had a very busy month learning in new ways and taking risks. We started the month of February with a week of JungleSport activities. Each of our 605 students took

turns with different options including: rock climbing, zip lining and various low ropes activities. This experience was free to students, as we used our special Outdoor Education

grant to fund this fun-filled activity.

This month we celebrated Canadian Black History in our classrooms, in our library and during special assemblies. During our monthly Character Award assembly, we celebrated

the character of Caring, as well as featuring student dance performances and artwork / poetry. The second assembly featured special storytellers , Sistah and Y Josephine, who

lead students in an interactive story telling of life. In our library commons, students participated in various centers focusing on Black History Month. Some centers featured

selected books from the collection, while others provided opportunities for students to create Kente Cloth weaves, and others had students use technology to learn about the

many key figures in Canadian Black History, the important contributions they made and even use an iPad app to add themselves to a prominent historical picture. Students re-

flected on the importance of the picture and how they would have felt in this situation. These photos can be found throughout the school! In addition, Mrs. Gill, Mrs. Dhillon

and Ms. Frimpong’s Kindergarten students created an extraordinary art piece, which is on display in our office area, and features the contributions of many students. Special

thanks to the committee for creating a welcoming display in our school foyer and organizing the activities throughout the month.

Please see the final page of our newsletter about Hearing and Vision screening happening at Clark in April. Letters will be sent home in early April.

Our Lost and Found bin is full of lost boots, mittens, hats and clothing. Please stop by the school before or after school to claim lost items.

The Atomic Volleyball is wrapping up in early March, with a

Staff vs Volleyball team game on March 4th. Congratulations to

the boys and girls Junior Volleyball teams, who both competed at

the Nelson Mandela P.S. Volleyball tournament last month. Both

teams made it to the playoffs and had very close scoring games.

By far, Clark Blvd had the best cheer of all the schools - it was

GREAT! TERRIFIC! ALL DAY LONG

FANTASTIC.

Pioneer Student For A Day! My Grade 3 class recently had the opportunity to go back in time for the day when we visited the Old Britannia Schoolhouse. It provided us the chance to experience a pioneer child’s school day. We were led in our role-play by School Master Campbell who created a very authentic learning environment. We enthusiastically participat-ed by joining the time period with our clothing and lunch choices. During the day we had the opportunity to experience pioneer lessons, games and behaviour consequenc-es, all within an original, one-room schoolhouse. It was an amazing day and we all have so many wonderful memories to treasure. Ms. Spurrell Grade 3 teacher

Extended-day program for kindergarten students Families have the option of enrolling their child in before and after-school programs developed by the Ministry of Education to complement the kindergarten program. These programs are run by qualified, experienced staff from our childcare partners. At registration, we will ask families to

tell us whether they are interested in the extended-day programs. The programs can only run if there is enough interest among families. Registering students with special needs Students who have demonstrated developmental disability, physical disability, hearing or vision loss or ASD/PPD diagnosis may require special-ized support in the school setting. The Peel board’s Special Education Supoort Services department looks forward to working with families as planning for their child’s entry to school in September begins. Conference helps parents make a difference in numeracy and beyond

The Peel District School Board is hosting its annual parent conference on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at

Rick Hansen Secondary School in Mississauga. This year, Numeracy & Beyond: Parent Conference,

will focus on numeracy—26 out of 61 workshops help with math. Parents will still have the opportunity

to attend workshops on other topics, including literacy, special education and science.

This free learning event is open to Peel parents of students at all grade levels.

Space is limited. Registration closes March 18.

Bus delays, cancellation information available on STOPR website At the Peel District School Board, we are committed to providing safe and efficient transportation services for our students to and from school every day. Transportation staff do their best to ensure that buses arrive and leave on time, but sometimes, delays happen. Information about delays may not always be available through the school, especially if they happen outside of the school day. The best place for find information about bus delays and cancellations, as they happen, is the Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) website at www.stopr.ca. To find information specific to your child's bus, you will need the bus route number.

School closed for PA Day on April 11, 2016 As a result of labour settlements with various federations and employee groups, the Ministry of Education has directed all school boards to create an additional Professional Activity Day this year and for each school year going forward. For the 2015-16 school year, the additional PA Day for the Peel District School Board will be April 11, 2016. All Peel board elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on this day. The next day, April 12, will remain a Day #4.

March Break Maple Syrup Days at the Jack Smythe Field Centre

Wednesday, March 16 to Saturday, March 19,

from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature as Spring blossoms. Jack Smythe Field Centre offers an exceptional family experience with a visit to its maple syrup bush. Join in on an authentic Canadian tradition. For a number of years the Peel Field Centres have invited the public for an awe-inspiring visit to our outstanding Maple Sugar Bush during the March Break. Individuals and families are invited to get involved as Spring comes to life. Help empty sap buckets, tap trees or sample some freshly made maple syrup as we celebrate the new syrup season. Take a hike along our tranquil trails and feed the friendly chickadees by hand. A teepee and early settler site will also be set up to show how syrup was collected and produced in centuries past. Use pioneer tools or listen to an Aboriginal tale around the campfires. No visit would be complete without a trip to the sugar shack where the sap is boiling and clouds of sweet smelling steam billow out of the chimney. Learn how modern day syrup operations are conducted with an industrial evaporator and tap line system. Have a taste of the freshly made syrup. It's going to be sweet! The cost is $5/adult and $4/child 12 and under. Lunch will be available for purchase. It will include: hot choco-late, cookies and hotdogs for you to roast over an open fire. Register today for Adult ESL or LINC classes Do you know an adult that is interested in improving their English language skills for work, study or daily life?

Through the Continuing & Adult Education department, the Peel District School Board offers a wide variety of English language classes that

help parents experience success in Canadian English in both listening/speaking and reading/writing. Courses are designed for a range of

basic, intermediate and advanced English (Levels 1 to 7) as well as the more experienced learner needing to prepare for an IELTS exam.

Classes are ongoing - Register anytime.

All learners that complete a session will earn a certificate of learning from the Peel District School Board.

Classes operate from six locations in Brampton and Mississauga with three specially designed adult centres at:

It’s Hearing and Vision Screening time!!!

School Screening Association will be visiting our school this year on April 25th and April 26th to conduct their clinic. Your child’s hearing and Vision should be screened every year

Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle

ear function issues. Two ways to have your child’s hearing tested:

You can talk to your child’s doctor and ask for a referral to a Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (Otolaryngologist) – this service is covered by OHIP.

You can make an appointment with an Audiologist – referral by your family physician is not required. However, if the Audiologist is

not in a hospital clinic, the visit may not be covered by OHIP and a fee upwards of $50 maybe charged. Your child’s hearing is not being monitored unless they are being seen by an Audiologist or and E.N.T.

Free vision screening is included wit the Hearing Clinic. Eye examinations are covered by OHIP. A fee of $15.00 is collected to help offset the cost of bringing this clinic to our school.

A permission form will be sent home with your child approximately 2 weeks before the clinic date. Please fill out the form, include $15.00 fee and return to the school prior to the clinic date.
