Class 1 Thermoplastic Hose for A/C Split Systems
Errecinque/Heldon
Thermoplastic hose has developed in the last ten years to be a trusted solution for static gauge lines and oil return lines where traditional copper capillary tube has been unreliable and cumbersome to install. Now they are also available for A/C split system refrigeration lines, cutting down on install time dramatically.
A guide to International Standards • The Governing standard in Australia for fixed Applications is:
AS/NZS 1677.2
• This standard refers to AS/NZS 1200 for piping, which in turn calls out AS 4041 for pressure piping. AS 4041 section 2.2.2 it states:
"Where a material conforming to one of the Standards in Clause 2.2.1 is not available, then, subject to acceptance by the parties concerned where specified on the order, alternative materials and components not complying with a Standard listed in Clause 2.2.1 may be used provided that they comply with the requirements of a relevant specification of the British Standards Institution (BSI), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Euronorm (EN), or other specification for material of equivalent grade and quality."
Unless the hose is manufactured according to a national standard from one of the above bodies then the risk falls on the equipment builder and ultimately end user to prove that the hose is of an equivalent quality.
• Australia is about to adopt ISO 5149 as ISO-AS 5149. In the ISO standard the flexible hose is called out as ISO 13971. ISO 13971 has been developed from EN 1736. Unless your hose meets EN 1736 or ISO 13971 then it will not comply with the new ISO standard.
• How can I tell if my hose meets ISO 5149?
In EN 1736 & ISO 13971 there are very strict requirements for marking of the hose. The mandatory markings are as follows:
– The manufacture date – Min and Max allowable temperature TS (for which the hose has been tested at full rated
pressure) – Working Temperature WT (peak allowable temperature at less than max allowable pressure) – Max allowable pressure PS (at Max allowable temperature TS) – Leak rate class per section 7 (1,2 or 3) – Country of production
Have you got the right material?
• Not all Flexible hose is built the same
• The quality of the materials have a profound impact on the durability and integrity of the final product
Superior Chemical resistance Long life with harsh POE oils and other chemicals
Strong reinforcement Allows a high working pressure @ 60 Bar
UV treated The hose is resistant to harsh sunlight
Exceeds EN 14471:2005 sunlit conditions such as in Australian conditions
equivalent to 1 year of outdoor exposure
Very ductile for forming Resistant to stress cracking and fatigue
Fittings are all machined not formed Reduced risk of fatigue failure
Premium Zinc Chromate conversion plating Resistant to corrosion
With clear coat
PolyEster Thread
PolyEster outer tube
High grade 60% Brass alloy

Application
• For split A/C systems, only Class 1 to EN 1736 is acceptable – why?
– There are 3 classes of thermoplastic hose
Class 3 = Lowest integrity and highest possible permeability at 1 kg/sq m (For a 7m run of 3/4” A/C piping would be 0.4 kg per year)
Class 2 = Superior integrity and very low permeability at 100 g/sq m (For a 7m run of 3/4” A/C piping would be 0.04 kg per year)
Class 1 = Premium integrity and negligible permeation at 10 g/sq m(For a 7m run of 3/4” A/C piping would be 0.004 kg per year. Practically zero and as good as any traditional copper line)
– In reality the Thermoplastic hose leaks much less than the standard
– The irony is that copper tube lines probably leak to a greater extent but the standards do not require them to be tested reported.
