CUSTOMIZED CLASSES GUIDELINES Classes are open to active Union Steelworkers Classes will be taken on the employee’s own time Customized course limit is $2,000 per participant per year If you have active employees that are interested in a class call Career Development and

let us know. If it falls within our class guidelines we will try to put it together for you.

TUITION ASSISTANCE In addition to customized classes USW members are eligible for Tuition Assistance up to a maximum of $1,800/calendar year (Jan-Dec) for an accredited school. Funds may be used for tuition, required textbooks and course-related fees. Funds cannot be used to pay for materials, equipment or supplies. The Tuition Assistance Funds are separate from the $2,000 Customized Classes fund. Per the Institute for Career Development Issuance 14. An active Local 6787 member can expend up to $3800 of program funding for combining TAP (tuition assistance) and customized courses under the following circumstances: Tuition Assistance (TAP) If seeking a degree from a school listed in the current

“Accredited Institutions of Post Secondary Education” or by private occupational/vocational schools recognized by State boards of vocational education. This will also

extend to schools approved by the ICD as “An exception to Policy Provider”. Customized classes: If courses lead to certification form a nationally accredited body.

Candidates must get approval prior to registering for classes and their expenditures MAY NOT exceed $3,800.

Active members are eligible to take approved classes at any of the learning centers on Page 51. To find out what classes are available, check out their listed web-sites. To take an approved class at any of these centers you MUST register at YOUR Learning center.

PLEASE NOTE: Each participant’s account will have a full deduction for a course that is NOT dropped BEFORE the start date. So, please make sure you contact your Career Development Office before the

start date of your class if you are not able to attend.

Tino Fulimeni

Scholarship Fund

In 2017, ICD will award seven $1000 scholarships to various children and grandchildren of steelworkers.

The Tino Fulimeni Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Brother Fulimeni. Tino was a fanatic about ICD. His commitment and contribution are evident in the success of the Career Development Program. The Fund is administered by ICD in Merrillville, IN. The following criteria must be met to be eligible for the scholarship drawing: Must be a college student starting or returning to college in the fall of 2016 or spring of 2017 Applicant must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average and supply a transcript if selected. Applicant must be the child/grandchild of a steelworker who is currently eligible to participate in the

Career Development Program.

Drawing will take place November 17, 2017. ICD will accept applications in their office until the application deadline of

July 31, 2017. Please send applications to:

NOW IS THE TIME! This 2 month class has everything you need to become a healthy and happy

person and employee! You will be assigned a personal coach who will set you up with a structured

plan catered to fit your needs. Participants will be offered both physical and mental coaching and

instruction by certified life coaches and personal trainers combined. Group workshops will be held

monthly and will cover topics ranging from managing finances to overcoming limiting beliefs in life.

Students will also be able to participate in Taekwondo classes and cardio classes.

ARTS AND CRAFTS WORKSHOP This class will be held at: 266 Stone Ridge Court, Chesterton

Do you have any projects that you have always wanted to make were not sure of what to buy or how to start? Have you ever wanted to etch on class, learn to stencil or make a wreath? You can paint on fabric; make a greeting card using one of the many machines I have. You have my whole studio at your disposal. You can bring in any project or use the supplies I have on hand to make lots of projects.

OUTDOOR ART WITH SUCCULENT PLANTS This class will be held at Burns Harbor Career Center

Succulent Plants are very popular because they are so easy to care for. The varieties are endless. They range from blue to orange and make beautiful arrangements in almost any container. In class you will learn how to use large leaves to cast your own container out of cement. We will also be making hypertufa containers out of a blend of peat, vermiculite and cement to create some very interesting containers for your succulents. You will learn how to grow your own plants from cuttings. By the end of the session you will have a variety of your own to start your own garden. We will be designing a living wreath made out of moss using your succulents for a beautiful addition to your garden.

WOODEN PALLET ART

Saturdays, May 20 and May 27 8:00am – 2:00pm

Kim Riley and Don Trinidad are collaborating on this project (Maximum 15 students)

One of the latest functional art forms these days is

made from old pallets. If you have been on Pinterest there are so many creative ideas using pallets to make

anything from shelves, picture frames, bird houses,

clocks or a crown favorite your favorite sports team made into a sign. To start off with you will be using

woodworking tools to create your project. To

complete your project we will be teaching you how to

stencil and paint to customize your design.

CLOUD STORAGE Dates: February 2 – February 9, Thursdays for 2 weeks Trainers: Computer Education Institute Ok, everyone is talking about CLOUD, and how wonderful it is, but do you even know what it is? Come to this class and learn how to store your data, pictures and files using CLOUD. There is Google Drive, DropBox, Crashplan, iCloud, Microsoft One Drive (Skydrive), plus many more. Come see which one would be best for you, and why you should be using Cloud storage!

RASPBERRY PI - Dates: February 13 – February 27, Mondays for 3 weeks Trainers: Computer Education Institute The Raspberry Pi 3 is a tiny computer about the size of a credit card but comes with endless possibilities for everyone from programmers looking to create fun new projects to students learning about programming in the classroom. With the additions of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the Raspberry Pi 3 is able to be used as a central hub to connect smart home devices and sensors. Dates: February 16 – May 25, Thursdays for 15 weeks Trainers: Computer Education Institute Network+ is a testing program sponsored by the CompTIA that certifies the knowledge of networking technicians with 18-24 months experience in the IT industry. Earning the Network+ certification means that the candidate possesses the knowledge needed to configure and install the TCP/IP client.

QUICKEN

Dates: March 8 – April 5, Wednesdays for 5 weeks Trainers: Computer Education Institute Having trouble finding out where all your money went? Could you have really spent $5,000 on groceries? Come to this class and learn how to use the computer to keep track of all your bills, checks, deposits, etc. You will get a trial copy of Quicken with this class.

This class will show you the multiple software packages that are available to get you up and running. Say NO to just watching movies on your TV!

CREATE YOUR OWN PHOTO BOOK Dates: April 19 – May 17, Wednesdays for 5 weeks Trainers: Computer Education Institute This class will teach you how to go on-line and create your own personalized photo books, There are many different sites to visit. We will show you our favorites and the ones that will save you the most money!

UPGRADE THAT PC

Dates: May 8 – May 22, Mondays for 3 weeks TRAINERS: Computer Education Institute Need to upgrade your PC but you don’t want to have to deal with the Geek Squad and their expensive bills. Be your own Geek Squad! This class will show you hands-on how to upgrade a computer. If you want to bring in your own computer for upgrading, you can work on it in class.

THE ART OF WATERCOLOR PAINTING This class is designed to learn watercolor painting for all skill levels. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to join in the fun with other students. COOKING 101

Cooking skills for the Non-Professional” will create opportunities for the students to better understand

basic cooking techniques. We will touch on soups and salads, fish, poultry, meats and side preparations.

At the end of the class, the students will have a basic knowledge of developing recipes and menus, protein

and product fabrication and dessert making. The goal of the class is to instruct students on creating

healthy menus for them and their famines to enjoy.

DESIGNING A COCKTAIL PARTY

Students will get to experience the hands-on approach to developi9ng their own cocktail party. We will

start with developing a theme for the party and building everything around the central concept. This will

include the décor and room set-up, invitations, and entertainment. Student will work the Chef to design

an hors d’oeuvres menu that can be placed on a buffet or passed to the guests. These recipes will be

tested and perfected by students. The students will also have the opportunity to design a signature

cocktail that fits the theme of the party. At the end of the class, each student will be allowed to invite up

to 2 guests to the cocktail party that they have designed throughout the class. Recipes and a chef jacket/

hat will be provided.

2017 NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE

This course covers the current National Electrical Code and prepares participants for safe installations of electrical tasks. A person taking this course is better prepared to do safe electrical installations and has a better chance of scoring higher on electrical exams for contractors licensing. Each week a different chapter of electrical systems is covered and discussed using a lecture format and Power Point Presentations. AUTO HEATING AND COOLING

This course is intended to give the student a thorough understanding of the HVAC system used on all vehicles. The student will learn how to use all the modern test equipment and also learn proper test procedures. GLASS ETCHING—BEGINNING & ADVANCED

Glass Etching is the abrading or roughening of a piece of glass in selected areas in order to produce a design. It is a way to produce a “frosted” design on the surface of a piece of glass, but it is much more that that! It can also be used to carve a design deep into the glass or to produce a shaded design that looks like delicate airbrushing but is permanently etched in the glass. Using the same equipment and techniques, it is also possible to etch or carve on stone, ceramic or wood. We will be introducing sand blasting in the advanced class. BASIC CEMENT JEWELRY I & II

In Part I of this class the basics of casting cement, mixing cement, curing times, staining, sealing and troubleshooting. They will make and complete 3 different items. They can choose leather or ribbon from where they can hang their completed piece of jewelry. Students will receive a mold of their choice, cement and their three finished products they completed. In Part II of this class the student will learn how to cast earrings with or without the metal finding or how to glue findings to the cement and cast and complete matching necklace, sealing and finishing making it ready to wear. CEMENT JEWELRY UNIQUE ACCENTS I

This class is going to consist of time casting or gluing items to the cast piece of cement by imbedding or gluing the item to the cement and then finishing with a sealer. You have then created three unique one of kind pieces of jewelry. These are great for gifts or selling. PERSONALIZED WOOD SIGNS AND DECOR

Construct personalized, fun and unique wood décor projects from scratch. In this class you will see how to put signs together. Also, you will learn all the techniques to get your board to have your own look. The students will do a hands-on take home project each week. WIRE WEAVING DESIGNS

Framing/Siding

Dates: March 20 - May 8, Mondays for 8 weeks Times: 8am-11:00am or 3:30pm-6:30pm Instructor: Bill Cameon In this hands-on class, students will learn and help to install steel siding on Post Frame buildings. Wood framing will be involved to complete the framing to accept the steel siding. We will also learn how and create the openings for doors and windows. Then we will install the windows and doors in the openings. Students will be introduced to and use power tools and tools that are unique to this type of work.

Electrical

Dates: May 15 – June 12, Mondays for 4 weeks Times: 8am-11:00am or 3:30pm-6:30pm Instructor: Bill Cameon This class will be installing electrical conduits and components that are required by the National Electric Code for a safe and carefree environment. The class will learn conduit bending, proper type and size of wiring and the type of boxes and other material and how to terminate all item for a complete installation.

Dates: June 19 - 26, Mondays for 2 weeks Times: 8am-11:00am or 3:30pm-6:30pm Instructor: Bill Cameon Insulation installed to satisfy the International energy code will be discussed. The proper type and r value of insulation will be used and the modern technique will be the main topic of a properly insulated building for this climate zone.

Dates: July 10 - 31, Mondays for 4 weeks Times: 8am-11:00am or 3:30pm-6:30pm Instructor: Bill Cameon Hanging and taping drywall will be the main focus of this class. Participants will be expected to participate in all facets of the drywall installation and should get a pretty good idea of the amount of effort and time it will take to become a proficient drywall person.

HVAC 100 INTRODUCTION TO HVAC TECHNOLOGY

SPORT/PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL CLASS

Our Sport Private Pilot Ground School is open to anyone interested in becoming a Private Pilot. This class will be an open discussion about the requirements and regulations needed to get your license. Each student will receive a Cessna Pilot Kit for home study. This class will prepare the students to take the FAA Written Knowledge test upon completion of the ground school. SOLUTIONS AT WORK – Session 1 This 3 month program consists of 12 weight management sessions and 12 fitness training sessions held at Omni Health and Fitness in Chesterton. Each week, participants will meet with a Certified Thin & Healthy Instructor to discuss different topics of nutrition (i.e. Powerful Why, Fat Intake, Portion Control, Metabolic Reconditioning). In addition to nutrition education, participants will also meet with a Certified Personal Trainer to learn and discuss different elements of physical activity (i.e. Basic Anatomy, Functional Training, Balance and Stability, Metabolic Conditioning). The program also allows participants full access to both fitness centers (Chesterton and Schererville) throughout the 12 weeks. Both facilities offer over 60 Group Exercise Classes each week for all fitness levels. Class schedule includes (but is not limited to) ZUMBA, Total Body Conditioning, Strength, Aqua Aerobics and Cycling. Participants will also have unlimited use of SGT (Small Group Training).
