Class Notes Fall 2018 Robert F. Boyd ’52 of Norfolk, Virginia, died on April 7, 2018. Early in his legal career, he served as the chief trial counsel of the General Court Martial Board of the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, N.C. After military service, he established a private practice at Boyd & Boyd, P.C., in Norfolk that spanned over six decades. He and his late wife served in many leadership roles in the church and in many community causes. A lifelong supporter of education, he and his wife served on the endowment board of W&M and they were the first couple in the College’s history to jointly receive the W&M Alumni Medallion. The Robert Friend and Sara Miller Boyd Dining Center is named in their honor. He served on the board of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law. A cheerleader at W&M, he was vice president of Kappa Sigma fraternity and the president/founder of the Pep Club. Also, he played intramurals and was a member of the Moot Court Team, the Order of the Coif, the Student Bar Association, W&M Choir, W&M Chorus and the Wesley Foundation. He is survived by sons Robert “Bob” F. Boyd Jr. ’80, James M. Boyd J.D. ’87 and David M. Boyd M.A. ’90, daughter Mary Beth Boyd Horton ’80, 13 grandchildren including Gillian Reed Horton ’08 and Benjamin Phelps Boyd ’10, five great-grandchildren, nephew William Linwood Boyd ’70, nieces Elizabeth McIntyre Quarles ’74 and Debra McIntyre Hunter ’78, sister-in-law Daisy Jens Boyd ’51 and son-in-law Charles Horton Jr. ’79. Cecil Gordon Moore, ’55 of Gloucester, Virginia, died on Jan. 26, 2018. He spent 56 years in private practice in Newport News, Virginia, retiring in 2015. He was appointed substitute judge for the 9 th Judicial District of Hampton, Gloucester, James City County and Newport News, where he served for 25 years. Also, he was an attorney for the City of Poquoson and for York County. For more than 10 years, he was a member of the executive board at Mary Immaculate Hospital, serving as chairman of the board during that time. At W&M, he ran track and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Law Review staff and Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Cyndy, two sons, three daughters and eight grandchildren. Karl August Peter ’65 of Richmond, Virginia, died on March 6, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army before coming to W&M and then, after earning his law degree, served three years active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a Judge Advocate General officer. For over 30 years, he lived in Williamsburg and had a law practice in Providence Forge. During that time, he remained in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He loved to travel and be outdoors. An avid trout fisherman who enjoyed fishing in the mountain streams of Pennsylvania, he was also a classic car collector and enthusiast. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity at W&M. His bachelor’s degree was earned at Eastern Nazarene College. Surviving are two sons, two daughters, including Anne August Peter Hoffler ’89, M.Ed. ’94, two grandchildren and a brother.

Class Notes Fall 2018

Robert F. Boyd ’52 of Norfolk, Virginia, died on April 7, 2018. Early in his legal career, he

Cecil Gordon Moore, ’55 of Gloucester, Virginia, died on Jan. 26, 2018. He spent 56 years in private practice in

Newport News, Virginia, retiring in 2015. He was appointed substitute judge for the 9thJudicial District of Hampton,

Frederick (“Rick”) L. Shreves II ’71 passed away on Oct. 3, 2018. Rick graduated from

Hargrave Military Academy ’61, from Hampton-Sydney College ’67, and William & Mary Law

School. Rick worked for the Federal Maritime Commission, and practiced law at Hill, Betz, &

Nash, a New York-based law firm. Later on, Rick found RGS Title which ultimately became

one of the largest privately held real estate settlement firms in the Washington DC Metro

area. Rick is survived by his wife Suzanne Cheryl Keyser Shreves, two children, Frederick

(“Tripp) L. Shreves III and Suzanne Carter Callaway, and six grandchildren.

Robert T. Boal, III ’72 of Homosassa, Florida, died on Feb. 9, 2018. His law career began as an

assistant city attorney in Hampton, Virginia, before moving on to work in private practice. In 1988,

he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and was a real estate attorney for the U.S. Army Corps of

Engineers. He was a Royal Arch Mason at the Monitor Lodge #197 in Hampton. An avid golfer, he

became a member of Sugarmill Woods and Southern Woods Golf Clubs in Homosassa after

moving there for retirement. Also, he was a Yankees fan and enjoyed going to the pool. At W&M,

he played soccer and was a member of the Law Review staff, the Student Education Association

and the Tutorial Program. His wife, Jane, a daughter and a grandchild survive him.

Peter Michael Desler ’72 of Boise, Idaho, died on Sept. 9, 2016. After serving as a U.S. Army

captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps for four years at the Pentagon and at the

Presidio of San Francisco, he practiced law in the Bay Area and taught business law at

Dominican College, Sonoma State College and the University of San Francisco. He operated

his own law firm and practiced law until 1992 before moving to Idaho. He enjoyed Bogus

Basin ski instructing, teaching business law at Boise State University and practicing

mediation and arbitration. In 2004, he began an independent law practice in Boise. Special

interests were playing the guitar and banjo, traveling, skiing, fishing, golfing, motorcycling

and watching Boise State athletics. His bachelor’s degree was earned at Providence College.

At W&M, he was involved with the Law Review, Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and the Student Bar Association.

Survivors include three daughters, four grandchildren, two sisters, numerous nieces and nephews and his

companion, Marcia Brown.

Leslie “Les” Keith Diamond ’77 of Newport News, Virginia, died on Jan. 1, 2018. He had a law

practice in Norfolk, Va., for over 40 years and he was a member of the American Bar

Association. A lifetime member of Adath Jeshurun synagogue, he also enjoyed attending

University of Virginia football games, rock concerts, amusement parks, swimming in Virginia

Beach and traveling to England. An avid memorabilia collector and dog lover, he was a fan of

Elvis Presley. His bachelor’s degree was earned at the University of Virginia. Surviving are a

sister, four nieces, two great-nephews and two great-nieces.

Joan Turner Beale Morris ’77 of Newport News, Va., died on March 20, 2018. She earned a

bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport College (now Christopher Newport University)

after working as a secretary with the Seaboard Railroad in Portsmouth and in Richmond,

Va. She then earned her law degree and had a career in private practice, including sitting as

a substitute judge. She was appointed to the General District Criminal Court of Newport

News by the Virginia General Assembly, becoming the first female judge between Richmond

and Norfolk at the time, and serving for 13 years before retiring to enjoy travel. In 1991, she

received the Outstanding Alumni Award from CNU’s College of Social Sciences and

Professional Studies and also was a recipient of the 50thAnniversary Distinguished Alumni Awards. She was a

member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church. Among survivors are her husband Tom, a son, a stepson, a

stepdaughter and three grandchildren.

Jay P. Porter ’78, was recently included on the 2018 Best Lawyers in America list. Porter

serves as Of Counsel at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP in Akron, Ohio, where he

specializes in real estate law.

Brian R. Jones ’81 passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018. Brian was born in Norfolk,

Virginia and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from Boston University and William

& Mary Law School. Brian practiced law in Roanoke for almost 40 years. Brian had many

passions in life, including woodworking, gardening, traveling, and studying history and

politics. Brian is survived by his wife, Marni, two daughters, Jane Plyler, Suzy Stoneburner,

as well as multiple grandchildren.

Robert B. “Chip” Delano, Jr. ‘81 was listed in Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia Legal

Elite. Chip is a shareholder with Sands Anderson in Richmond, Virginia where he specializes

in appellate litigation.

William N. Watkins ’82 was listed in Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia Legal Elite.

William is a shareholder with Sands Anderson in Richmond, Virginia where he specializes in

construction law and litigation.

James Holahan ’83 was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America for 2019 in the

categories of Employment Law – Management; Labor Law – Management; and Litigation –

Labor and Employment. James is currently a member of Bond, Schoeneck & King in Rochester,

New York.

Michael J. Garvin ’84, was recently included on the 2018 Best Lawyers in America list. Garven

is a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP in Cleveland, Ohio, where he specializes

in Intellectual property law, patent law, and trademark law, specifically litigation. Garvin was

also named 2019 Best Lawyers’ Cleveland Litigation – Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year.

Lee Ann Gustafson ’84 has retired from the Florida Attorney General’s Office after 22 years of service. Lee Ann is

moving back home to Jamestown, New York to enjoy retirement.

Elizabeth L. White ‘84 was recently listed among Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia

Legal Elite. Elizabeth serves as counsel with Sands Anderson’s Williamsburg and Richmond

office where she specializes in real estate and land use law.

Michael Dougherty ’85 recently joined DLA Piper as a partner and patent litigator. Michael

has specialized as a patent litigator for multiple pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies

for thirty years.

Lee Roberts ’86 was recently named a 2019 Mountain State Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers

Magazine. Lee Roberts is currently a partner with Weinberg Wheeler Hudgins Gunn & Dial

where he specializes in construction litigation.

L. Lee Byrd ’88 was recently listed among Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia Legal Elite.

Lee is currently a shareholder with Sands Anderson’s Richmond office where he specializes in

general litigation. Virginia Business magazine is specifically recognizing Lee for his legal services

and pro bono work.

Mark Payne ’91 recently joined Troutman Sanders’ Orange County California Office, where he

will serve in the firm’s Labor and Employment division. Prior to joining Troutman Sanders, Mark

chaired the employment law practice at Rutan & Tucker, where he worked for 16 years.

Jeffrey H. Geiger ’92 was recently listed among Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia Legal

Elite. Jeffrey is currently a shareholder with Sands Anderson’s Richmond and Fredericksburg

offices where he specializes in intellectual property litigation.

Scott Lesmes ’93 was recently elected to the Loudoun Valley Viking Athletic Association’s Hall

of Fame. Scott’s induction recognizes his outstanding accomplishments as a baseball and

basketball player for Loudoun Valley High School.

Robert C. Juelke ’93 was recently honored as one of the Philadelphia region’s top lawyers in

the area’s Best of the Bar Awards. Robert is a Partner with DrinkerBiddle’s Philadelphia office

where he specializes in representing companies in the financial services industry.

Pam Conover ’93 recently joined the board of directors of House of Ruth of Maryland, one of

the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers devoted to helping thousands of

individuals impacted by domestic violence.

Margaret F. Hardy ’95 was recently listed among Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia

Legal Elite. Margaret is currently a shareholder with Sands Anderson’s Fredericksburg and

Richmond offices where she specializes in health law and healthcare litigation.

Mike Grable ’97 recently joined Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC as Vice President of

Corporate Development and Strategy located in Dallas, Texas.

Stephanie Zapata Moore ’98 was recently featured in Latino Leader magazine’s Top Latino

Lawyers in The Country issue. Stephanie currently serves as EVP and General Counsel for Vistra

Energy located in Irving, Texas.

Richard L. Weber ’99 was recently recognized as a 2018 Upstate New York Super Lawyer in the

field of Environmental Litigation. Richard is currently a member of Bond, Schoeneck & King where

he represents clients facing potential liability for discharges or releases of toxic substances, such

as discharges of petroleum products and exposure to industrial chemicals, and for the failure to

abate or remediate such substances.

Brian G. Muse ’01 was recently listed among Virginia Business magazine’s 2018 Virginia Elite.

Muse currently serves as counsel with Sand Anderson’s Williamsburg and Richmond offices

where he specializes in labor and employment law.

Toyja Kelley ’01 recently became President of DRI – the voice of the Defense Bar at the

organization’s annual meeting in San Francisco. DRI is the largest professional organization in

the country devoted to exclusively representing defense bar attorneys. Toyja is currently a

partner at the Baltimore law firm of Saul Ewing, Arnstein & Lehr LLP where he has extensive

trial experience in the state and federal courts in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

William Lamberth ’04 was recently elected as Majority Leader by his House Republican

colleagues in the Tennessee General Assembly.

Rosa Evergreen ’05 has been named to the American Bankruptcy Institute’s

2018 “40 Under 40” list. Rosa is a partner with Arnold & Porter’s Washington, DC office where

she has extensive experience in all aspects of bankruptcy and corporate restructuring.

Lizzie Fletcher ’06 recently won the election to serve as the representative for Texas’s 7th

Congressional District, which encompasses several Houston suburbs in western Harris County.

Winning 52.5 percent of the vote, Fletcher defeated Republican incumbent John Culberson,

who had been in Congress for 19 years.

Rhys James ’07 is helping to lead an expansion of his firm, Kaplan Voekler Cunningham & Frank,

into the Hampton Roads area. Rhys currently focuses his practice in corporate and securities

work, and the firm’s new Hampton Roads location will also feature an estate and tax-planning

division as well.

Wesley D. Allen ’08 has recently been named to the Virginia Lawyers Weekly 2018 class of “Up

& Coming Lawyers.” Wesley is a partner with Blankingship & Keith where he specializes in civil

litigation with an emphasis on education matters.

Tyler McIntyre ’08 has joined Starnes Davis Florie in Birmingham, Alabama. At the firm, Tyler’s

practice will focus on medical liability, healthcare litigation, and medical device litigation.

Margot Alicks ’08 has been named Barrister’s Best “People’s Choice” 2018 by Law Week

Colorado in the category of Best Family Law Lawyer. Margot is currently a partner with

Broxterman Alicks McFarlane’s Denver office.

Darren Abernethy ’08 was recently named a member of an elite inaugural class to receive the

International Association of Privacy Professionals’ new Privacy Law Specialist designation. Darren

currently serves as Senior Counsel at TrustArc, a global privacy technology solutions company

headquartered in San Francisco.

Will Holt ’08 was recently recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 honoree. Will is partner at Kaufman

& Canoles’s Williamsburg office where his practice focuses on real estate, business, estate

planning and eminent domain.

Latoya Asia ’09 received the Douglas Morton Alumni Service Award at the William & Mary Alumni

Association’s fall awards banquet. The Douglas Morton Alumni Service Award is given to individuals

who demonstrate excellence in service, loyalty, commitment and leadership. Latoya currently

serves as Assistant General Counsel at E*TRADE financial in Arlington, Virginia.

Kenneth W. Abrams ’09 has been elected partner with McGuireWoods. Kenneth currently

serves in the firm’s Richmond office where his practice focuses on products, environmental &

mass torts litigation.

Katherine G. Putnam ’09 has been promoted to partner with Latham &

Watkins’s Washington DC office. Putnam is a member of the firm’s Finance Department, and her

banking practice focuses on representing sponsors in private equity transactions.

Krista P. Hanvey ’09 was recently elected partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Dallas, Texas

office. Krista currently serves in the firm’s Coporate Department and the firm’s Employee

Benefits and Executive Compensation Department.

Sara Chamberlain ’10 has been elected partner with Thompson Coburn LLP’s St.

Louis office. With the firm, Sara represents clients in a variety of environmental litigation,

regulatory enforcement, and transactional matters.

Julia Bishop ’10 has recently accepted a position as Trademark Counsel with Amazon in Seattle,

Washington. Prior to joining Amazon, Julia worked as an associate attorney specializing in

trademark and copyright law with Troutman Sanders in Richmond, Virginia.

Jessica Sura ’10 has been elected principal with Blankingship & Keith. Jessica has a litigation

practice with the firm, and specializes in medical malpractice defense.

Andrew English ’10 officially announced his candidacy to serve as Secretary of State in

Kentucky on Veteran’s Day. Andrew is a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves

and General Counsel for the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet for the Commonwealth of

Kentucky.

Brian Focarino ’11 received the Douglas Morton Young Alumni Service Award at the William

& Mary Alumni Association’s fall awards banquet. The Douglas Morton Young Service Award

is given to individuals who demonstrate excellence in service, loyalty, commitment and

leadership. Brian is an associate with Cooley LLP’s office in Boston where he specializes in

trademark and copyright law.

Andrea Nixon ’12 has been named by The National Black Lawyers as one of its “Top 40 Under

40” in New York and was appointed to the organization’s “Top 40 Under 40” executive

committee. Andrea is an associate in Alston & Bird’s Finance Group in the firm’s New York office.

Amanda DeBerry ’12 has been promoted to shareholder with the Boleman Law Firm, in

Richmond, Virginia. DeBerry primarily practices in the firm’s Richmond Office, but she covers

dockets and litigates cases in the Richmond, Newport News, and Norfolk Bankruptcy Courts. Her

primary practice is post-filing issues and litigation, including managing the motion for relief and

objection dockets.

Julie Silverbrook ’12 married Dr. Adam Scott Footer on October 27, at Hotel Monaco in

Washington DC Julie is the executive director of the Constitutional Sources Project, a

nonprofit organization in DC that provides historical sources related to the creation,

ratification, and amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Dr. Footer is a board certified

obstetrician-gynecologist for Capital Women’s Care in Rockville, Maryland.

Anna Birkenheier ’13 recently joined Williams Mullen’s Richmond office as an associate in the

firm’s litigation practice. Before joining Williams Mullen, Anna served as an assistant attorney

general in the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia.

Allison Davis (Tuck) ’16 recently married John Tuck, III on June 17, at the Great

House, a museum and events space at the Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Alison is a political and election law associate with Jones Day’s Washington DC office.

Jon is a senior vice president for business development in the DC office of Aon, the

London insurance and reinsurance brokerage.

Aneta Nikolic ’17 recently joined the law firm Blankingship & Keith, P.C., located in Fairfax,

Virginia. Her practice focuses primarily on civil litigation and legal malpractice defense.

Stephanie J. Dinan ’17 recently joined the law firm Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP in

Washington DC Stephanie is a member of the firm’s Construction Practice Group.

Andrew G. Barna ’18 was recently recognized as one of five finalists for the 2018 Brown Award

for Excellence in Legal Writing. His paper, The Early Eight and the Future of Consumer Legal

Activism to Fight Modern-Day Slavery in Corporate Supply Chains, will go before a final judging

panel that will choose the first, second, and third place awards. Andrew and Morgan Tarrant

were married at the Lodge at Hope Church in Richmond, Virginia on September 22, 2018.

Andrew is currently a law clerk at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington, DC.
