Dear JMU Class of 2014,

The tradition of purchasing a class ring runs deep here at JMU, as well as at many other universities across the nation. The ring is not only used to commemorate the significance of graduation, but it also symbolizes the unity that every student feels about attending JMU. The Class of 2014 is a unique unit within itself. No other school or class can mimic our special “Madison Experience” here at JMU. Between witnessing the opening of the brand new Bridgeforth Stadium, demonstrating unity during

tragedies, and being a part of the DNA Age dance, the Class of 2014 has truly left its mark on JMU.

The JMU Ring Committee, with help from Balfour representatives, has designed a ring that highlights the “Madison Experience” which makes the Class of 2014 unlike any other. Since JMU is one of the few universities in the nation that redesigns its ring each year, the Ring Committee made sure to design a ring that reflects the pride, unity, and uniqueness of the Class of 2014.

There are many traditions that are significant to JMU. One of these traditions is the annual Ring Premiere in which the Ring Committee will unveil the ring design and the Class of 2014 will have a chance to come together and create a new memory. Refreshments, prizes, and live entertainment will be provided at this event on Tuesday, March 20th at 6pm in the Festival Ballroom. Considered one of the most exciting events for the sophomore class, this is an evening that your student will not want to miss. We hope that your son or daughter will join us to celebrate the “Madison Experience” along with the rest of the Class of 2014.

In JMU spirit,

Rebecca CrossClass of 2014 Ring Premiere Chair

Prior to deciding to attend JMU, I’m sure we all had our own reasons for making that ultimate decision, whether it was academics, price, organizations, or even just good food, we all came to the same choice. Contrary to what individually drew us to JMU, I feel confident when I say we each found our home away from home. This year alone we as a community have overcome many challenges that bring us together as Dukes.

While our time at JMU may appear seemingly short, we will always have our memories to carry us through. From the beginning we were crushing records with the largest DNA molecule, followed by a triumph over Virginia Tech, concluded with the first game in the new Bridgeforth Stadium and the countless other experiences in between. We are privileged to be at a school that can keep up with our inconceivable talent and our constant drive to succeed. As Dr. Seuss once said “If things start happening, don’t worry, don’t stew, just go right along and you’ll start happening too.” We as Dukes are fortunate enough to have endless resources at our fingertips that help us turn our dreams into reality.

As many of you are aware, JMU prides itself on tradition, whether it is holding a door open or throwing streamers at a touchdown, we partake in many activities that bring us together. That being said, we are no strangers to change. We are at a point in our lives where we are constantly changing and evolving at an exponential rate. As you will see, we have incorporated both tradition and change in our class ring. Each aspect on our ring is meaningful to our class in a certain way, and as a committee we could not be more excited to share this with you all. This Ring Premiere event is meant to bring our class together to create even more memories, and I hope you all enjoy your time here with great refreshments, great giveaways, and even better company.

As this academic year slowly comes to an end, it is time to be grateful for all the remarkable memories we have made thus far. I would like to personally thank all of the Ring Premiere Committee members for putting in countless hours to make this event happen. I also want to thank the Class of 2014 as a whole for the continued support and spirit, and I challenge you all to make these years some of the most memorable and riveting years of your life. I have no doubt that everyone will enjoy the Premiere and I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Collin RussellSophomore Class President

Dear Parents of the Class of 2014,

University Side Class Side

James Madison Statue

This statue of James Madison stands proudly on the Quad to remind students of the inspiring and motivated man who serves as the university’s namesake. The class of 2014 reflects the vision of innovation and courage displayed during Mr. Madison’s own life.

The Wilson Clock

The clock on Wilson Hall is set at 8:14. When translated into military time, it is 20:14, our graduating year!

Interstate 81

Though JMU is uniquely split by a highway, we are anything but divided. Interstate 81 provides the road to JMU for so many of us. And with bridges over and tunnels under we are still united.

The Quad

The Quad represents the beautiful campus that we have all grown to love at JMU. It serves as a place for meeting friends, attending classes, playing a pick-up game of football, or catching some rays on a warm Virginia afternoon. With the majestic Wilson Hall in the background, the overlapping walkways of the Quad symbolize that no matter where life takes us; we will always be united by JMU.

JMU Streamers

The purple & gold streamers that are thrown after touchdowns at football games truly illustrate the spirit of the student body at JMU. These streamers also represent the excitement and enthusiasm shown in all aspect of our lives, whether we are in the classroom, on the Quad, or studying abroad.

Ribbon Cutting

The Duke Dog cuts a ribbon, opening of the newly renovated Bridgeforth Stadium. Our class witnessed the transformation of Bridgeforth Stadium between our Freshmen and Sophomore years. The opening of the new stadium represents the growth and emergence of the Duke Dog Nation outside of the campus.

21-16

During our freshmen year, the JMU football team defied all odds and beat Virginia Tech. With a score of 21 to 16 on that cold and rainy September day, JMU students and faculty learned never to rule out the underdog. The turkey leg that is found in Duke Dog’s mouth represents the excitement and pride that we will always remember.

1787 DNA Strand

1787 is not only the year that James Madison signed the Constitution, but it is also the important Freshmen orientation event that we attended in the Summer of 2010. 1787 represents a time of new friends, new beginnings, and of course, the DNA Age dance. The strand of DNA that surrounds 1787 on the ring represents the unity that was illustrated when the freshmen class came together on the Quad to link like DNA in a dance.

The Madison Experience

Our class represents the complete experience that each student at JMU encounters. We represent the spirit, diversity, tradition, and education that is present in JMU students from the past, present, and future. Though we each have a different experience, we are united under purple & gold, and the spirit of being a Duke.

The Kissing Rock

The Kissing Rock represents one of the many traditions that has lasted through generations of students here at JMU. Though the Kissing Rock might not serve the same purpose as it did in the past, it is still a symbol of our history and unity found on The Quad.
