What is High School Band?
Similar to middle school band, high school band allows students to further their musical growth on
instruments while completing a rigorous academic course load at Parkview. Unlike middle school band,
each of the four band classes is ability-based, and therefore, has a mix of 9th-12th grade students. All
students who sign up for band classes will take an audition to place them into one of the 4 concert
ensembles based on the completion of the audition requirements. Everyone has a spot in high school
band and no one will be “cut” based on ability level. We only ask that each student continue to strive to
“get better” on their instrument.
We also offer many other performing ensembles outside of the class day. You will read more about these
below but offerings such as chamber ensembles, jazz band, marching band, pep band, percussion
ensemble, drumline, and colorguard are all part of our program at Parkview. We encourage rising
students to become as heavily involved as they can to reap the rewards, fun, and academic growth that
music unlocks in our lives.
The Parkview Marching Band
The award winning Parkview Marching Band is the most visible and largest component of the Parkview
Band program. The marching band meets after the school day in the summer and fall. To be eligible for
marching band, students must be enrolled in a concert band class. Marching band begins in July with
multiple camps that all rising 9th graders will attend. Once school begins, the marching band practices
after school on Tuesday, Thursday, and every other Monday (perc/guard every Monday) from August
until the end of October. We continue with a lighter once a week schedule in November as we finish out
the football season.
We do have a few dates in the spring that are required for people who are interested in marching band.
Please know that no one will be “cut” based on ability level. We do have certain behavior and attendance
expectations in marching band and these are enforced strictly to ensure a quality product.
Colorguard and Drumline will have additional dates to help these students audition onto their correct
instrument and flag. Wind players will be assigned on the same instrument they play in concert class
unless Mr. Atha or Mr. Kindl has given permission for an instrument change.
Please see the following pages for a complete list of required spring dates and a tentative fall calendar.

Marching Band FAQ
What instrument can I play in marching Band?
We march the following instruments: Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bari
Saxophone, Trumpet, Mellophone (for horn players), Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion, Colorguard.
What if I play an instrument not on the list?
See Mr. Atha and he will help you figure out what you can play. Learning a 2nd instrument can be fun!
How much does marching band cost?
In the next several pages you will see a total cost breakdown for our program.
What if I cannot afford marching band?
We have multiple payment plan options available. Everyone can march regardless of financial status but
please know that we will ask for every family to sign a financial contract stating when and how they plan
to fulfill their obligation to our program. We realize everyone has a different suitation and will work with
you as best we can.
What Parkview sports conflict with marching band?
Football, baseball, softball, volleyball have practice schedules that are identical to ours and you cannot
participate in both. Cross Country can be worked out between Coach Demorest and Mr. Atha. Rotc,
soccer, tennis, track, basketball, lacrosse, TSA/Robotics, and drama have no conflicts with marching band.
For other possible conficts, see Mr. Atha
Is marching band fun?
Yes….
Is marching band a lot of work?
Yes…see above
Do I really have to come to camps in July before school starts?
Yes, our pre-school camps are required for any marching band member. (AND THEY ARE FUN!!! )
What if I am not quite sure if I want to committ to marching band?
Realize that you’re stepping into a program with a rich history of being one of the best marching bands in
the state. We also are one big family. When you join our program, you are not just taking a class or
participating in an activity, you are becoming a member our family. This will be home for most of you for
4 years. The sense of togetherness, friendship, and “home” drastically changes how you experience high
school (for the better!). Think of this as the first best decision in your future adult life!
Parkview Drumline
The Parkview Drumline is an integral part of our marching band. Taught by our Director of Percussion,
Mr. Kindl is molding our percussion students into a world class performing ensemble. Percussion students
have a more intense rehearsal schedule than other students in the program. Anyone interested in
drumline should already be going to weekly ChopShops on Monday’s in the spring. While nobody will be
“cut” from the drumline, you will audition into one of several components of the drumline. You will be
placed on one of the follow instruments: snare line, bass line, tenor line, flub line, or front ensemble.
Placements are determined by your commitment to the ChopShop, audition, and recommendations from
Mr. Sargent, Mr. Davidson, and Mr. Atha

Optional Band Trip to Chicago
We will be taking an optional trip to Chicago in the spring of 2018. This trip is open to all band students
who are enrolled in a band class in 2018.
We are excited to announce our plans to visit the Windy City in spring 2018! Pending administrative
approval, we will visit Chicago from March 30 - April 3. Possible activities include: a boat tour of the city,
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a Broadway show or the blue man group, Chicago’s deep dish pizza,
Grant Park, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Navy Pier, the Willis Tower, and more. We
anticipate the cost of this trip to be approximately $700 depending on 2018 prices when the trip is
booked. Start fundraising and saving NOW for this exciting trip. This will give you over a year to save up.
We have three major fundraisers: Our upcoming Mattress Sale, the “Ford Drive For Your School” in
August and our Fruit Sale in October. Students who take advantage of our fundraisers can easily offset a
percentage of the trip. Please note, band fees for 2017-2018 must be paid in full before student account
monies can be applied to the 2018 spring trip.

Financial FAQ
How can I raise money to use for my student’s fees?
We conduct a variety of fund raisers through the year! Students are eligible to earn money for
their account through our drive for your school program in the summer, fruit sale in the fall, and
mattress fundraiser in the spring. You can easily raise $100+ in a year to offset fees!
What can I use my fund raising money for?
Band account funds may not be used for tangible personal expenses (lunches, marching shoes,
concert dresses, T-shirts, etc.). Band account funds are applied first toward the fees. Once that’s
paid in full, any remaining balance may be used for band trips or non-tangible fees with your
written permission.
What payment plan options do you have?
We offer a pay in full, 4, 8, and 11 month payment plan options. These will split your payment
into the following breakdowns:
Boys/Girls: After $50 deposit is taken out in the spring, the following payment plans are available:
Pay in Full ($10 discount): $525/625
Pay in 4 installments: $134/$159 per month
Pay in 8 installments: $67/$79 per month
Pay in 11 installments: $49/58 per month
What do I have to pay up front?
We require all students to place a $50 deposit to secure your spot for 2017-2018. This will be due
at the marching band enrollment night on April 26th, 2017. This $50 will be applied to your fees
for 2017-2018
What if I cannot make the minimum payment per month for marching band?
It is our philosophy not to turn away any student who wants to participate in marching band due
financial concerns. With that said, families who cannot afford our minimum monthly payment of
$49/58 (boys/girls), must sign a financial contract with the boosters outlining services that will be
rendered in the place of payment. This includes but is not limited to: required volunteering hours
by parents/family, fundraising requirements, in kind donation of skilled services, securement of
sponsors, alternate payment plans for temporary hardship, etc…
Does GCPS/Parkview providing funding for marching band?
Very little. GCPS and Parkview supply approximately 3% of our overall budget each year (around
$3000 is given to us). Our total budget for last year was $100,000. The amount given by
GCPS/Parkview is such a small amount that without the required fees above, we would be forced
to dramatically scale back the scope of our program. We have a tradition of having one of the
best marching bands in Gwinnett County and it is our goal to continue this tradition for as long as
possible.
