1 Class of 79 News October 2019 Omnes Viri News PREZ SEZ Greetings Classmates, Wow – that was one helluva party we threw in September! Our 40-Year Reunion was the biggest gathering of 79ers since May 30, 1979 when we cast off from Mother B to set sail on the seven seas. Over 470 Classmates ended up attending this reunion, and along with our guests, we numbered about 1,000 people. No wonder East Carolina got walloped on the field -Pirates could never hope to keep up with that many Navy guys! So, congratulations to the Class of 1979! I want to thank our Reunion Coordinator, Valerie Gerheiser for her steady hand on the tiller as she steered us through numerous activities and feasts. Valerie is quite simply the best at what she does, and she gets full credit for our Reunion’s success. I also want to thank the members of the Reunion Committee for their wise recommendations and studious planning efforts. I can’t believe we squeezed it all in! A few “vocal” classmates also chimed in to make things happen from the sidelines – I thank you too for contributing to our success. Finally, many folks – classmates, spouses, family, and friends stepped up as volunteers to put 450 goodie bags together and to check in classmates throughout the weekend. Without your assistance, the Reunion would not have gone off nearly so well. Congratulations to the newly-elected Class Leadership: Class President – David Jackson (17 th Co) Class Vice-president – Chuck Dixon (19 th Co) Class Secretary / SHIPMATE POC – John “Wiz” Withers (19 th Co) Class Treasurer – Jeff Johnson (29 th Co) Class Council: First Battalion Representative – Rich Phares (5 th Co) Second Battalion Representative – John “Fozzie” Miller (8 th Co) Third Battalion Representative – Ralph Quarles (14 th Co) Fourth Battalion Representative – Kirk Michealson (22 nd Co) Fifth Battalion Representative – Stan Clark (29 th Co) Sixth Battalion Representative – Jeff McFadden (36 th Co) Dave, Chuck, Fozzie, Stan, and Jeff are all newly elected to their posts and the term of office begins January 1, 2020. I wish the entire Class Leadership team every success. Your classmates join me in thanking you for taking on this awesome responsibility. Sadly, the Reunion is now in the past. We will do it again in 2024, then 2029, and beyond, and I hope we do just as well. I heard a lot of companies will try to get together in-between, and that is terrific.

40th REUNION

What a great reunion! Thank you to Valerie Gerheiser for all the legwork coordinating everything and thank you to the reunion committee for approving what we had! From Valerie, “Thank you to all the volunteers that helped at putting together give-away bags, at the check-in desk and helped in other ways for the 40th Reunion weekend. It was very much appreciated! Hope everyone had a great time reconnecting with classmates and friends.” I didn’t see much of the game, I was too busy catching up with classmates!

There are some selected candid shots from our weekend. At the end of the reunion section, there will be a link where you can go get copies. Check-In – We checked in on second floor of McGarvey's. After checking in, many stayed to catch up, while others went to company dinners. Here are some pictures:

Our last Marine and last 79er standing was Lieutenant General Bob Walsh. Bob was unable to attend the class meeting and presented his plaque separately. Class Elections – Committee Members: Grant Thornton, Mike Foreman and Bob Klocek Election held 17 August – 2 September 2019 IAW Class of ’79 By-Laws. Ms. Holly Powers, USNA Alumni Assn, provided assistance with the administration of the voting website. 179 votes were tallied, up from 100 votes at the 30th reunion and the three candidates for Second Battalion provided for some suspenseful results. And the election trivia: 1st Vote cast - Sean Cate 79th Vote Cast - Mark Shell 179th Vote Cast and Anchor Man of the election (honorary title, no cash) - Mark Decker Here are the results: As reported by the election committee during the class meeting on 13 September, the following members of the Class of 1979 were elected to serve a 10-year term beginning 1 January 2020. You saw the results in Sean’s Prez Sez. CVN 79 – From Craig Grabowsky (thanks, Craig!) KENNEDY is the second FORD class carrier and the second to be named for John F. Kennedy is designated CVN-79. Like all 79’ers, I’m sure she’ll have a long and distinguished career. On 29 May, the day before the anniversary of our graduation and the 103rd anniversary of JFK’s birth, the 588-ton island was landed on the flight deck.

The ship will be launched and christened on Saturday 7 Dec in Newport News. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy is the ships sponsor. Fitting out will take another couple of years before she joins the fleet. The Hampton Roads Chapter of the Navy League is a 501(c3) that is coordinating the funding of those things not funded by the PEO. They have already raised about $6.5M and established a coffee bar with profits going to the ships MWR fund; they bought two vans for the commissioning crew and they are the event coordinator for things like the island landing christening and commissioning. The Navy League POC is Mary Ellen Baldwin ([email protected]). She will be posting information on their website about christening so whomever is selected to lead our effort to support the ship should keep an eye on it and contact her. I would recommend someone in the Hampton Roads area or a member of the crew of the previous KENNEDY CVN -67. Our Class Officers, Class Council, and former Acting SecNav Sean Stackley have be discussing some possibilities. From Sean, Stackley, “’79 ‘sponsoring’ the 79 would be a class act. That said, we would need to determine what our role would be in supporting the ship and crew. Could involve a gift for the sponsor (Caroline Kennedy), fund raising towards commissioning or a gift for the crew…a one-time gift, donation or endowment…other(?). I’m happy to engage Navy leadership, the PCO, Amb Kennedy, or Mike Petters once we know what we have in mind. Christening would be tight since it’s right around the corner, but… Another thought was a Sailor & Bluejacket of the Year plaque.

FOOTBALL TAILGATING

There are three home games the month of October. Here are the themes: • Oct. 5th vs Air Force- All-American

Cookout with Fried Falcon • Oct. 19th vs USF- Fest Day! -

Lobsterfest & Octoberfest • Oct. 26th vs Tulane- Cajun/Mardi Gras Those new to the '79 Tailgater group. Here's some important information: • Our tailgate area remains the same for

this season. We are located in spot #3 on the Gold Side near the Courthouse. Kick-off for all home games is set for 3:30pm. We usually start setting up for the class tailgater around 11am.

• We are in need for tents to be set up for the food area. If you have one, please bring it. We could use 4 tents.

• If you have a table, please bring it with you as well. We usually have 3-4 tables for food (sometimes we need more) and any extras can be used back on the walking path for dining. Fred will be

bringing the generator for crock pots and warming trays.

• Please bring at least one dish (appetizer, main entree, side or dessert) to the tailgater to share. I know it is a challenge for some, but we can't rely on the regular attendees to serve all. Items don't have to be homemade or even with the theme. Store bought is acceptable.

• Also, bring your own drinks and chairs. Remember that you don't have to stay with the theme. It only serves as a guideline. As an example, Chuck's Amaretto Cake goes with all themes and is mandatory at every tailgater. Any dish, dessert and/or shot is welcome! If you would like to be added to the '79 Tailgater emails, please email Valerie at [email protected] to be added to the group. Valerie Gerheiser '79 Reunion Coordinator Halftime Cooler The Kruegers will again be hosting the halftime tailgater in the Admiral's Row parking area on the gold side, space 572 just outside Gate M. A halftime cooler will be at the class tailgater site for you to place your halftime spirits in. The cooler is labeled with a 79 class crest. Any beverages not picked up after the game will be marked with a blue tape and made available to all at the next game! Cooler will be available at the class pre-game tailgater all season. Navy vs Army (Lincoln Field/ Philadelphia) December 14th Game kick-off is 3pm. Information regarding the "tailgater" will be sent at a later date.

NAVY-NOTRE DAME 2020

(Same as last month) Anyone interested in getting on the distribution list for Navy-Notre Dame 2020 Football game in Dublin, Ireland, should contact Mary Ellen Doyle at [email protected] or (757) 705-0565. She is coordinating hotels rooms and football tickets for the big weekend. (no change from last month)

As many of you know, Navy is playing Notre Dame in Ireland on August 29, 2020. The coordinator for the 79ers going is Mary Ellen Doyle ([email protected]). Here’s what Mary Ellen sent out:

Hi everyone! Tom McLernon and I are coordinating the Class of '79 trip to Ireland for the Navy-Notre Dame game on 29 August 2020. We hope this trip will include a couple of class dinners, pub crawl, pep rally, tailgate, and, of course, a winning football game against Notre Dame. More details will follow as information becomes available for game tickets, tailgate, pep rally, etc.

1. The most important item right now, though, is reserving a block of hotel rooms in Dublin. After a large search (over 20 4* hotels, most of which are not available for our nights), Tom and I chose the following hotel: Aloft Dublin City, 1 Mill Street, The Liberties, Dublin, Ireland, D08 XK58, Telephone: 353 1 961 1800 (https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dubal-aloft-dublin-city). It's a Marriott property, just opened a couple of months ago.

2. I'm basing the rates below on an exchange rate of €1 = $1.25 (today's rate is €1 = $1.12) in case the exchange rate worsens. I'll make adjustments when all the payments have been made and issue refunds if the exchange rate remains favorable. The hotel has asked that I make the payments, then guests may book rooms via a weblink and access the rooms via the hotel website. So everyone will need to send me checks for their stays.

3. For nights of 27 August - 30 August 2018, rates for single occupancy, including continental breakfast, are below. The supplement for double occupancy is $19 per room per night. Rooms must be reserved for all 3 nights. I checked to see what everyone did in 2012, and everyone stayed at least Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I'm sure the hotel will have accommodations for stays before and after those dates. We can work on that closer to travel time, if anyone is interested in additional nights.

Aloft King: $388

Aloft Double Double (beds are 65" wide, between American queen and king): $425

Urban King: $450

Urban Double Double (beds are 65" wide, between American queen and king): $488

13

Urban Aloft Suite: $875

4. Important due dates for the hotel reservations:

27 June 2019: Please let me know how many rooms you need and the number of occupants for each. If you're not sure, just a guestimate is fine for now. If you are sure you will not be coming, let me know so I can remove you from the distribution list. If you want to join the festivities but will not need lodging, let me know so we'll keep you on the list.

27 August 2019: I will need a firm commitment of number of rooms needed for the 3 nights and number of occupants, and a check for 50% of hotel cost sent to me.

27 December 2019: Cancel by this date for a guaranteed refund.

27 February 2020: Check for balance of hotel cost sent to me.

The hotel does allow a small number of cancellations without penalty from 27 December 2019 to 27 July 2020, so hopefully I will be able to give a full refund if you have to cancel during that period. No refunds after 27 July 2020, unless we can find someone else to take over your reservation.

5. Parking is available at Q park, located a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The cost per 24 hours is €35. Personally, we may do without a rental car in Dublin, as Uber/taxi seems to be available if it's too far to walk.

6. The hotel is located 0.6 miles from St. Stephen's Green, where the pep rally was held last time, and about the same distance to the Temple Bar area. There is no information available yet on any specific events (pep rally, tailgate, etc.). I couldn't find a hotel near the stadium that had availability or that would respond to me, other than the Roxford Hotel, where we

stayed for the 2012 game. But they're not taking reservations for August 2020 until November 2019.

7. We can reserve a bus to take us from the hotel to the Aviva Stadium and back to the hotel, which will cost approximately $15-$20 per person round trip.

8. Anthony's Travel is offering the following package, starting at $4500 for 2 people (excluding airfare): 3 nights at Mespil hotel; full breakfast; 2 tickets to game; welcome event; transportation to/from game and welcome event (if needed); and hop on/hop off bus and Dublin pass (a 2-day pass is €79/person). Even if the exchange rate worsens between now and August 2020, I estimate that our costs will be at least $2000 less than Anthony Travel's. For reference, in 2012 game tickets were $70 each, and tailgate tickets were $50. I expect those prices will at least double next year.

Don't hesitate to send me any questions you have or call. Mary Ellen Doyle (757) 705-0565 5452 Todd St. Virginia Beach, VA 23464 GO NAVY--BEAT NOTRE DAME!

Unmanned Ship from Leidos Reaches Historic Milestone; Nevin Carr Quoted

Leidos announced on Thursday that the company’s unmanned ship, Sea Hunter, was recently featured in a major demonstration using an advanced senor less than a year after the ship was transited from San Diego to Hawaii with no personnel on board.

"This exercise offered valuable lessons learned on how to take full advantage of a medium unmanned surface vehicle, with no personnel on board," said Nevin Carr, Leidos Navy strategic account executive. "Autonomous vessels, especially when combined with artificial intelligence, have the potential to impact naval warfare in ways yet to be discovered."

The Office of Naval Research project was supported by the Naval Information Warfare Center – Pacific, Naval Undersea Warfare Center-Newport, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory to explore how unmanned vehicles can be used as a naval force multiplier, and allow warships to be available for other missions.

The exercise also showcased the open architecture and flexibility of Sea Hunter, which has previously hosted a variety of mission payloads, including airborne sensors.

WERE YOU A PRISONER AT WEST POINT?

The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association is working on a story about the annual “Prisoner Exchange” prior to the Army-Navy football game. We’re looking for alumni who participated in the exchange program and spent a semester in “enemy” territory during their time at the Naval Academy. We’d like to know what midshipmen got out of the program and how it helped shape their careers. If you participated in the exchange program and would like to share your memories, please email Senior Writer Jimmy DeButts at [email protected].

MIDSHIPMEN FLY THROUGH EYE

OF HURRICANE DORIAN

Three midshipmen and their Oceanography department instructor spent Labor Day weekend flying seven missions with the U.S. Air Force 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (53rd WRS) “Hurricane Hunters” through Hurricane Dorian, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record. The midshipmen served as mission specialists, contributing to the scientific effort on each flight. The data they collected was not only part of their research coursework, but part of a larger joint-interagency effort combining

MODLY ’83 CASTS DOUBT ON 355-SHIP NAVY

Among the goals established during President Trump’s 2016 campaign: growing the Navy to 355 ships. Now, the Navy’s No. 2 civilian has acknowledged that goal won’t happen “within a reasonable amount of time” or without a $20-30 billion increase in annual funding.

HOW DO YOU UPDATE YOUR PROFILE ON USNA.COM?

(updated July 2019)

The Class of 1979 Leadership relies on the information contained in the USNA Alumni Association database to maintain our contact with you. All “official” emails going out to the class use the addresses in the Alumni Association database. This includes items like reunion information, upcoming trips or classmate gatherings, loss of classmates, or any information of a time-sensitive nature, as well as SHIPMATE magazine delivery. Changes to your Alumni Profile can only be made by you – the Class Leadership is not able to do this for you. It is very important to stay in communications with your Class by email and regular mail, as well as telephone contact in order to stay informed through SHIPMATE articles and the Class Column and Class President emails. Please follow the following instructions to change and update your Alumni Profile. • Step 1: Go to www.usna.com.

• Step 2: Click on “Log In” at top right of the page. On a mobile device, tap the menu icon at top right, then tap “Log In”.

• Step 3: Enter your Username and Password, then click/tap on “Login.”

(Important: If you forgot or don’t know your Username and/or Password, click/tap on the “Forgotten Password” link. Do NOT use the New User Registration unless you know you’ve never registered an account – highly unlikely. If you receive SHIPMATE, then you probably have an account.)

• Step 4: Click on “My Profile” at top of the page. On a mobile device, tap the menu icon at top right, then tap “My Profile”.

• Step 5: Scroll through your Personal Information and update the appropriate fields. Ensure your mailing address and email address are correct. After completing your

updates, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. I suggest you then look over your profile again to make sure it’s accurate. Please note the “Make Private” options for any or all of your information. Use them if you feel it is necessary.

• Step 6: Click on “Logout” at top right of the page. On a mobile device, tap the menu icon at top right, then tap “Logout”. HOW DO YOU FIND CLASSMATES?

(same as last month) If you want to find contact information on our classmates or other Naval Academy grads, you can use an Alumni Tool called Alumni Lookup. Of course, our classmates or other grads must enter their information in the system, but if they did, you can find it. When you Log in at www.usna.com go all the way to the bottom right of the page and you will see an “Alumni Lookup” button. Click that. A login page for USNA.com will open it for you to enter your information and then agree with the user agreement. Then you enter fill in the search fields, click search, and your results will show up in a box below the search fields. That’s it. Happy hunting! Hopefully, our classmates and other alumni will be registered.
